Leafs' Polak Set To Play Thursday

News: Roman Polak (ankle) was on the ice for pregame warmups and looks to be back in the lineup Thursday against the Hurricanes, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: The Leafs hinted that Roman Polak would play by activating from IR a couple of hours before warmups, and as expected, he'll make his first appearance for the team in nearly a month. Polak will slot in next to Jake Gardiner on the second pairing, with Korbinian Holzer heading to the press box as a healthy scratch.

Leafs Activate Polak

News: Roman Polak (ankle) was activated from injured reserve Thursday, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: Roman Polak's activation suggests he'll be an option for Thursday's game with the Hurricanes, which would mark his first appearance since Nov. 22. He's expected to take part in pregame warmups with the rest of the team, but coach Randy Carlyle has yet to decide if Polak will play.

Leafs' Polak Practices Wednesday

News: Roman Polak (ankle) practiced with the team Wednesday, David Alter of MapleLeafs.com reports.
Analysis: Roman Polak's participation in practice, as well as the Leafs' decision to waive Brandon Kozun after the session to create roster space, suggests that the defenseman is on track to return to the lineup Thursday against the Hurricanes. The Leafs have been playing their best hockey of the season at the moment without the services of Polak, but his skills as a hitter and penalty killer will certainly make his imminent return a welcome development.

Maple Leafs' Polak Could Play Thursday

News: Roman Polak (ankle) could play Thursday against the Hurricanes, David Alter of the Maple Leafs' website reports.
Analysis: Roman Polak was not expected back until the upcoming weekend, but he was able to skate without issue at Tuesday's morning skate, which could allow him to return to action once eligible Thursday.

Leafs' Polak (Ankle) Joins Team For Skate

News: Roman Polak (ankle) skated with the rest of the Maple Leafs during Saturday's morning session, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: It's another step in the right direction for Roman Polak, who had previously been limited to skating on his own as of Friday. Coach Randy Carlyle said the Maple Leafs are expecting to have him back in the lineup next Saturday, but Polak's timetable could be moved up if he looks strong during practice over the next couple of days.

Leafs' Polak Skates Friday

News: Roman Polak (ankle) was on the ice on his own prior to Friday's practice, David Alter of MapleLeafs.com reports.
Analysis: Roman Polak is probably at least a week away from a return to game action, but his presence on the ice Friday represents a promising preliminary step. The Maple Leafs likely won't establish a firm target date for his activation from IR until he starts practicing with the team.

Leafs' Polak Set To Miss Some More Time

News: Assistant general manager Kyle Dubas said Roman Polak (ankle) wouldn't return to the lineup until at least the middle of December, James Mirtle of The Globe and Mail reports.
Analysis: Since the middle of December is technically only four days away and Roman Polak hasn't resumed on-ice work with his teammates, it seems safe to reasonably assume the blueliner will out of the lineup another week, at minimum. Polak has been a valuable contributor on defense for the Leafs this season, but his absence has coincided with the team's hottest stretch of the season. Since Polak suffered the ankle injury in a Nov. 22 victory over the Red Wings, Toronto has won five of its seven games.

Leafs' Polak (Ankle) Placed On IR

News: Roman Polak (knee) was placed on injured reserve Saturday.
Analysis: It was only a matter of time before this move was made, as Roman Polak was handed a four-week timetable after suffering a knee strain late last month. Forward Brandon Kozun (ankle) will take Polak's place on the active roster.

Leafs' Polak Out Four Weeks

News: Roman Polak is expected to miss the next four weeks with a knee strain, James Mirtle of TSN reports.
Analysis: Roman Polak's leg got caught up awkwardly with boards Saturday when he went in for a hit on the Red Wings' Tomas Tatar, and he originally appeared to have an ankle injury. It turns out it was his knee that got hurt on the play, so he'll be replaced by Korbinian Holzer for the foreseeable future.

Leafs' Polak Likely Out A While

News: Roman Polak (ankle) will undergo an MRI on Sunday, but head coach Randy Carlyle expects the blueliner to be out a while, TSN's Mark Masters reports.
Analysis: Roman Polak has been one of the Leafs' best defenders this season, so this is an tough blow. Perhaps Sunday's MRI will reveal encouraging news, but Carlyle was not optimistic after the game.

Leafs' Polak Forced From Game With Ankle Injury

News: Roman Polak was forced from Saturday's game with what appeared to be a left ankle injury, according to in-game reports on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada.
Analysis: He went to hit Tomas Tatar in the defensive corner and his ankle buckled against the bottom of the boards. He had to be helped from the ice.

Leafs' Polak Surprises With Goal And Assist

News: Roman Polak scored an empty-net goal and added an assist in Thursday's 5-2 win over Tampa Bay. He also finished plus-1 and laid four hits.
Analysis: He's known more for his hits than his ability to put up points, so this little outburst is a real bonus for owners who are rolling him for his pugnacity. He's actually on track to obliterate his career-best for hits, but he needs to tighten up that plus-minus in order to deliver good fantasy value. The plus-1 is a start.

Leafs' Polak Goes Minus-4 In Loss

News: Roman Polak posted a minus-4 rating over 23:11 of ice time in Tuesday's 9-2 loss to the Predators.
Analysis: Roman Polak has now gone minus-6 over his last two games, a tough hit to take for those of his fantasy owners who were only rostering him for help in the hits and blocks categories. In spite of the plus/minus drag, Polak still looks like one of the Leafs' better defenders, which should enable him to remain on the ice for over 20 minutes a night.

Leafs' Polak Set To Play Thursday

News: Roman Polak (illness) was back on the ice for morning skate and will play Thursday against the Avalanche, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: Roman Polak missed Wednesday's practice with the flu, but the Maple Leafs never believed his status was in jeopardy for Wednesday's contest. He's expected to rejoin Morgan Rielly on the Leafs' second pairing.

Leafs' Polak Should Be Available Against Avs

News: Roman Polak (flu) missed Wednesday's practice, but should be available to play in Toronto's game on Thursday against the Avalanche, Jonas Siegel of TSN reports.
Analysis: Roman Polak hasn't given much fantasy value this season, scoring just one goal in 12 games played, but is proving himself to be valuable on the penalty kill. The 28-year-old defenseman has never scored more than four goals in a season, so don't expect his offensive output to dramatically exceed that level, if he reaches it at all.

Polak Helping Improve Leafs' PK

News: Roman Polak is proving himself as a penalty killer for the Leafs. He's averaging 3:31 on the ice, highest among Leafs' defenders, and has been instrumental in helping the team move up to 13th in penalty killing (heading into Sunday's games).
Analysis: Roman Polak probably won't bring fantasy owners much value this season, but he will help keep his goalies insulated from attack. So owners of Jonathan Bernier and James Reimer should send him a card of thanks right now.

Blues Trade Polak To Maple Leafs

News: Roman Polak was traded to the Maple Leafs on Saturday in exchange for Carl Gunnarsson, TSN's Bob McKenzie reports. The right-handed shot will bring a nasty edge to the Leafs' blue line.
Analysis: Roman Polak, who has been a consistent presence in the St. Louis lineup since 2008-09, should prove to be an upgrade for the defensively challenged Leafs. He will provide a stay-at-home rudder for either Morgan Reilly or Jake Gardiner in the second pairing and allow the youngsters to accelerate their growth. But he probably won't be a fantasy factor. He delivered four goals, nine assists and 71 PIM in 72 games last season.

Blues' Polak Continuing Solid Play

News: Roman Polak has three goals and five assists in 47 games so far this season.
Analysis: Roman Polak provides a physical presence along the blue line in St. Louis, but doesn't chip in very much offensively. He does sport a decent plus-8 rating though, and his 37 PIM give him a little added value.

Blues' Polak Activated, Will Play Tuesday

News: Roman Polak (ankle) was activated from IR and will play Tuesday against the Coyotes, Lou Korac of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: An ankle injury cost Roman Polak nearly a month of action, but he'll slot back into the lineup Tuesday against Phoenix. In 34 games prior to the injury, Polak recorded three goals, four assists, a plus-7 rating and 24 penalty minutes.

Blues' Polak A Full Participant Monday

News: Roman Polak (ankle) was a full participant in Monday's practice, NHL.com's Lou Korac reports.
Analysis: Roman Polak has missed nearly three weeks with the ankle injury, but a return looks imminent now that he's back with the rest of his teammates without any apparent limitations. He could be a lineup option for Tuesday's game vs. the Coyotes.

Blues' Polak Skates Monday, Nearing Return

News: Roman Polak (ankle) is nearing a return after skating Monday, Dan O'Neill of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: The veteran blueliner was not included in the Czech Republic's Olympic roster Tuesday, so he'll be given that break to heal rather than be in a position to log extra wear and tear on behalf of his country.

Blues' Polak To Miss At Least Two Weeks

News: Roman Polak will miss at least two weeks with an ankle injury, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Although the loss of Roman Polak hurts the Blues on the defensive end to some degree, he's nowhere near as valuable a fantasy commodity as fellow blue line mates Jay Bouwmeester, Alex Pietrangelo, and Kevin Shattenkirk. With just seven points in 34 games, Polak's absence should only be felt in leagues that reward hits and blocks.

Blues' Polak Lands On IR On Saturday

News: Roman Polak (lower-body) has been placed on injured reserve Saturday.
Analysis: There is little word as to the exact nature of the injury and no timetable for his recovery has been given just yet. Expect the team to make an additional announcement soon enough.

Polak Remains Steady For Blues

News: Roman Polak is on pace to match his career high in points and to exceed his best plus/minus.
Analysis: Though these high-water marks represent only 21 points and a plus-9, they very well could be better numbers than the last defenseman on your roster. He won't kill you in ice time and will get you a few penalty minutes. It also doesn't hurt that he plays for one of the best teams in the league.

Polak Scores First For St. Louis

News: Roman Polak picked up his first goal of the season as the Blues fell to San Jose 6-2.
Analysis: The goal gives Roman Polak double digit goals for his career (10). So, needless to say he is not going to picked up for his offensive ability. If your league rewards you for blocked shots and hits then he might be a player to target.
