Schwarz heading back to Europe

News: Adn.com reports that Blues goalie prospect Marek Schwarz, a 2004 first-round pick, is returning to his native Czech Republic, according to Alaska Aces (ECHL) coach Keith McCambridge.
Analysis: Schwarz, who spent a couple stints with the Aces last season and went 2-1-1 this season with a 3.15 goals-against average and .904 save percentage, becomes a free agent at the end of the season. He struggled in Peoria (AHL) this season, going 4-4-0 with a 3.56 goals-against average and .868 save percentage. Schwarz also got a little time with the Blues earlier this season, but was at best fourth on the organizational depth chart. Now that Schwarz is overseas, he shouldn't be held onto in long-term keeper leagues.

Schwarz back in the minors

News: The Blues recalled goalie Chris Holt from Peoria of the AHL Friday and sent goalie Marek Schwarz down to the farm team.
Analysis: Schwarz, 22, appeared in two games for the Blues -- both in a backup role. The Mlada Boleslav, Czech Republic native was originally drafted as the Blues first round selection, 17th overall in the 2004 Entry Draft. He is nothing more than organizational depth at this point in his career and shouldn't be owned outside the deepest of long-term keeper leagues.

Schwarz replaces injured Bishop

News: Former Maine star Ben Bishop made 12 saves in his first NHL start before leaving with an undisclosed lower-body injury in the St. Louis Blues' 4-0 victory over the Florida Panthers on Saturday night. Bishop, a St. Louis native, left with 15:27 to play. He was replaced by Marek Schwarz, recalled earlier in the day from Peoria of the AHL. Starter Manny Legace missed the game after straining a hip flexor in a loss to Los Angeles on Friday night, and regular backup Chris Mason had an appendectomy last week. Schwarz stopped all five shots that came his way.
Analysis: The Blues recalled Schwarz after Legace's bizarre injury in which he hurt himself stepping onto the carpet used for Alaska governor Sarah Palin, who was on hand Friday to drop the ceremonial puck. Schwarz, 22, is 0-1 with an .839 save percentage at Peoria. He was a first-round pick in the 2004 draft. Schwarz has little to no Fantasy value at this time.

Schwarz already back in minors

News: The St. Louis Blues switched backup goalies on Sunday, recalling rookie Ben Bishop from Peoria of the American Hockey League and assigning Marek Schwarz to Peoria. The Blues' regular backup, Chris Mason, is expected to be out two weeks after undergoing an emergency appendectomy Friday.
Analysis: Schwarz, 22, is 0-1 with an .839 save percentage at Peoria. He was a first-round pick in the 2004 draft. He was recalled Friday to backup Manny Legace on Saturday against the Blackhawks, but didn't get into the game. Schwarz has little to no Fantasy value at this time.

Schwarz added to Blues bench

News: Blues G Chris Mason had an emergency appendectomy early Friday morning and is expected to miss two weeks. The Blues recalled G Marek Schwarz from AHL Peoria. Schwarz was 0-1.
Analysis: Schwarz will spend time as a backup to Manny Legace and might only see action if Legace is injured or is struggling. Schwarz has little to no Fantasy value at this time.

Blues send down goalie Schwarz

News: The St. Louis Blues assigned goaltender Marek Schwarz to the Peoria Rivermen of the American Hockey League. Schwarz was up with the club for the game against Chicago when he played 39 minutes and allowed five goals on 13 shots.
Analysis: The 21-year-old Schwarz has played in 18 games with the Rivermen this season, posting an 8-6-2 record along with a .900 save percentage and a 2.37 goals against average. Schwarz is nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game while up in the pros.

Schwarz steps in for hurt Legace

News: St. Louis starting goalie Manny Legace, who had been named to the Western Conference All-Star team last week, left Wednesday's game against Chicago after the first period with an injured right arm. Legace stopped all seven shots he faced in the first, including several tough chances. Marek Schwarz replaced him to start the second period and made only eight saves, giving up five goals. St. Louis coach Andy Murray pulled Schwarz for an extra attacker with 6:50 left. Patrick Kane scored an empty-net goal with 5:22 left. Schwarz returned after the goal.
Analysis: Schwarz is nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game while up in the pros.

Toivonen sent down, Schwarz called up

News: The St. Louis Blues assigned G Hannu Toivonen to the Peoria Rivermen of the American Hockey League on Monday to get some playing time, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Marek Schwarz was called up to take his place.
Analysis: Toivonen wasn't playing much lately, with Manny Legace suddenly playing at an All-Star level, so the Blues would clearly rather him get some playing time than sit on a bench. Hold onto him for now if you have the roster space, as he will likely be back and we all know Legace might not play this hot forever.

Schwarz makes first 2007-08 outing

News: St. Louis goalie Hannu Toivonen faced only eight shots in the first period but was blitzed in the second period during Sunday's 9-5 loss to the Avalanche. He allowed the five goals on 15 shots and was replaced by Marek Schwarz to start the third period. Toivonen returned at 3:05 of the third period after Doug Weight scored his seventh goal 24 seconds into the third. "We didn't give Hannu a lot of help back there, and the game was back in reach, so we wanted to show him that we still believe in him," Blues head coach Andy Murray said. Schwarz made three saves and allowed one goal in 10:43 of ice time.
Analysis: Schwarz was only recalled Thursday because Manny Legace went on injured reserve. It has been almost a year since he made an appearance before going in net Sunday. He will be headed back to the AHL as soon as Legace is healthy. Schwarz is nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game while up in the pros.

Blues recall G Schwarz

News: The Blues placed G Manny Legace on injured reserve after tweaking his right knee in warmups on Tuesday in Calgary, according to NHL.com. St. Louis recalled goaltender Marek Schwarz from Peoria (AHL) to take his roster spot. Hannu Toivonen assumes the role of starting goaltender while Legace is out of action.
Analysis: Schwarz, 21, posted a 4-3-3 record, a .900 save percentage and 2.30 GAA average while with Peoria. He made his NHL debut last season with the Blues on Dec. 12, 2006 vs. Chicago. He is nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game while up in the pros.

Schwarz next in line for Blues

News: The depth in the Blues' goaltending system has taken a deep hit in the last week. G Juuso Riksman returned to Peoria (the Blues' AHL affiliate) after a one-month loan to a Swedish team. When Riksman came back, the Blues traded goalie Jason Bacashihua to the Avalanche earlier in the month. Well, now Riksman has decided that he's returning to Europe.
Analysis: That leaves Marek Schwarz as the Blues' only legitimate candidate to play in St. Louis if an injury occurs to either Manny Legace or Hannu Toivonen. Schwarz is the best of the lot, so watch him in keeper leagues if one or both of the Blues' goalies go down. Bacashihua and Riksman can be ignored in most formats for now.

Schwarz returned to Peoria

News: Marek Schwarz was returned to Peoria of the AHL with Jason Bacashihua and a healthy Curtis Sanford able to play on Tuesday and Thursday.
Analysis: Schwarz is an NHL-caliber goaltender who might draw some trade interest during the offseason. For now, avoid him in all but the largest of keeper Fantsay leagues at this point.

Schwarz returned to Peoria

News: The St. Louis Blues assigned Marek Schwarz back to Peoria of the AHL on Sunday and the team recalled Curtis Sanford (groin) from his conditioning assignment.
Analysis: Schwarz might be back at some point, but he and Sanford are both not worthy of Fantasy consideration while Manny Legace is playing well.

Bacashihua out, Schwarz in

News: Curtis Sanford (groin) will head to Peoria of the AHL to begin a conditioning assignment. The St. Louis Blues also have assigned Jason Bacashihua to Peoria of the AHL and recalled Marek Schwarz.
Analysis: Schwarz will serve as the backup to the red hot Manny Legace, perhaps until late January when Sanford is expected to return to health. None of these goaltenders are worth using while Legace is rolling along.

Blues use two goalies Wednesday

News: Jason Bacashihua made 41 saves and Marek Schwarz had one stop when he played briefly in the second period in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to the Avalanche. Schwarz came in at 15:10 after Milan Hejduk's goal and Bacashihua returned 2:17 later.
Analysis: Neither Bacashihua or Schwarz should be used in Fantasy leagues at this time.

Blues summon Marek Schwarz

News: The Blues recalled goalie Marek Schwarz from the AHL team in Peoria. The 20-year-old Schwarz will be the backup to Jason Bacashihua, recalled from Peoria on Dec. 1 when Curtis Sanford was sidelined with a groin injury. Sanford will be sidelined six to eight weeks.
Analysis: Schwarz was the team's first-round pick in the 2004 entry draft and appeared in 12 games for Peoria with a 9-2-0 record and .912 save percentage. He ranks fourth in the AHL with a 2.28 goals-against average and is tied for third with nine wins.
