Wild's Backstrom Gets Loss In Debut

News: Niklas Backstrom stopped made 14 saves in a 2-1 loss to the Kings on Sunday.
Analysis: Making his first appearance since January, Niklas Backstrom wasn't bad but picked up the loss nonetheless. With Darcy Kuemper's strong play to start the year, Backstrom will likely continue to remain as the backup.

Wild's Backstrom Set To Start Against Kigns

News: Niklas Backstrom will be the starter for Minnesota's game against the Kings on Sunday, Jon Rosen of LA Kings Insider reports.
Analysis: Niklas Backstrom will be making his first start of the year for the Wild giving Darcy Kuemper a rest. Last season, Backstrom appeared in 21 games finishing with a 5-11-2 record and a .899 save percentage.

Wild Confirm Backstrom For Sunday

News: Niklas Backstrom will make his first start of the season Sunday against the Kings, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: What was thought to be a timeshare in goal between Niklas Backstrom and Darcy Kuemper to start the season has quickly devolved into a one-sided competition, as the red-hot Kuemper has been in the net for the Wild's first three turns. It's hard to argue with coach Mike Yeo for riding the young goaltender, who set a franchise record with a 163-minute shutout streak to open the season. Backstrom will spell Kuemper on Sunday, but even with a decent performance against the Kings, he seems unlikely to usurp Kuemper as Yeo's preferred option in goal.

Wild's Backstrom Likely To Start Sunday

News: Niklas Backstrom will likely make his season debut Sunday against the Kings, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: Niklas Backstrom began the season in a platoon with Darcy Keumper, but Keumper's shutouts in his first two games could make Backstrom have a more limited backup role. The Wild likely want to get Backstrom a start early in the season, but it's possible Kuemper could remain in net Sunday if he stays hot.

Kuemper-Backstrom To Split Wild Goalie Duties

News: Niklas Backstrom will begin the season in a platoon with Darcy Keumper in goal with the better performer getting the bulk of starts, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: It's not clear who will start the Wild's first game, but it looks like Kuemper and Niklas Backstrom will split starts until a primary goalie emerges. Both played well in the preseaon, but Kuemper may have the early edge since he started Minnesota's final preseason game.

Wild's Backstrom May Be Trailing In Job Battle

News: Niklas Backstrom appears to be losing ground in the battle for the No. 1 goalie gig with Darcy Kuemper, Chad Graff of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: Niklas Backstrom was the frontrunner for the starting job entering camp, but after Kuemper reported to the Wild upon agreeing to a new contract with the team, the declining veteran looks on track to eventually settle into a reserve role. The 36-year-old has performed respectably in training camp with 29 saves on 32 shots over two appearances, but the memory of last season's 5-11-2 record, 3.02 GAA and .899 save percentage will probably make the Wild somewhat reluctant to use him regularly. Though some of his struggles could be attributed to injury, the youthful Kuemper posted far better numbers as a rookie and probably gives the Wild a better chance at ascending to the Western Conference's elite in 2014-15. Expect Backstrom's long tenure in Minnesota to allow him to cut into Kuemper's workload early in the season, but Kuemper should soon separate himself as the team's clear No. 1 option.

Wild's Backstrom Has Strong Preseason Debut

News: Niklas Backstrom stopped all 12 shots in 30 minutes in Monday's preseason loss to Winnipeg.
Analysis: Niklas Backstrom underwent season-ending abdominal and hip surgery in March, but looked back to full strength. He'll battle Darcy Kuemper and possibly Ilya Bryzgalov for the starting role, but has to be considered the favorite at this point.

Wild's Backstrom Full Participant In Camp

News: Niklas Backstrom was a full participant in the first practice and scrimmage of Minnesota's training camp, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Niklas Backstrom underwent season-ending abdominal and hip surgery in March, but looks back to full strength. After a poor 2013-14 season, (3.02 GAA and .899 save percentage) Backstrom enters camp as the likely No. 1 goalie with Josh Harding out several months due to a broken foot. However, he'll face competition from Darcy Kuemper and possibly Ilya Bryzgalov for the starting role. The goalie situation with the Wild could be in flux again this season.

Wild's Backstrom Good To Go For Camp

News: Wild GM Chuck Fletcher said Niklas Backstrom (abdomen, hip) is feeling good and and will be ready to participate in training camp, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Any way you spin it, Niklas Backstrom had a miserable 2013-14 campaign, as the veteran netminder suited up for 21 games and posted a lousy 3.02 GAA and .899 save percentage before undergoing season-ending abdominal and hip surgery. Though he's ostensibly healthy, Backstrom is now 36 and doesn't appear poised to enter the season as the club's starter, especially with Darcy Kuemper and Josh Harding still around. His sizable contract may be the only thing keeping him around.

Wild's Backstrom Feeling Better

News: Niklas Backstrom (abdomen) is expected to be back in pads in July.
Analysis: The goaltender played just 21 games in 2013-14, amassing a disappointing record of 5-11-2. It was clear that he wasn't fully healthy all year, so it's encouraging to hear that Niklas Backstrom is finally starting to feel better. He'll likely have to compete with Darcy Kuemper for the starting job next season, since Kuemper played so well in his absence.

Wild Officially Rule Backstrom Out For Season

News: Niklas Backstrom (abdomen) underwent a third procedure Tuesday and will officially be ruled out from returning this season, Chad Graff of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: The Wild essentially gave up on the idea of Niklas Backstrom possibly returning when they acquired Ilya Bryzgalov at the trade deadline, and this news only ends closure to that matter. Backstrom never seemed to be healthy this season, and it reflected in his play, as he posted an ugly 3.02 GAA and .899 save percentage over 21 appearances. Backstrom has enjoyed a nice run as the Wild's primary netminder for since the 2006-07 campaign, but look for the team to go in a different direction next season.

Wild's Backstrom Begins Skating

News: Niklas Backstrom (abdominal soreness) was on the ice in pads Tuesday. "I know that he's still not feeling great, so he's going out there and keeping sharp just in case he can come back," head coach Mike Yeo told the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: It was thought Niklas Backstrom would have season-ending surgery, but it looks like that's been held off for now. Still, it's unlikely he'll return in any meaningful role this season.

Wild's Backstrom Likely Out For Season

News: GM Chuck Fletcher said Niklas Backstrom (abdominal soreness) will require surgery and is likely out for the season, Chad Graff of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: Niklas Backstrom was expected to play through the rest of the season at less than 100 percent health, but Tuesday's acquisition of Ilya Bryzgalov lessened the team's need to have the goalie play through injury. The 36-year-old has seen his season foiled by both injury and the emergence of Josh Harding and Darcy Kuemper, and the team appears content to move on with either of those options as their starting goalie in the seasons to come.

Wild's Backstrom Looks To Be Feeling Better

News: After third-stringer John Curry was returned to AHL Iowa on Saturday, the assumption is that Niklas Backstrom is sufficiently recovered from his abdominal soreness, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Niklas Backstrom will probably never be 100 percent healthy until the offseason, but for now, it seems as though his pain has dissipated to a degree. He's been a spectator for both of the Wild's first two games out of the break and may not make his next start until the Wild play their next back-to-back.

Wild's Backstrom Returns To Practice

News: Niklas Backstrom (abdominal soreness) practiced Wednesday and could start either Thursday or Friday, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: It sounds like head coach Mike Yeo wants Niklas Backstrom to start one of two back-to-back games, but he'll need to show he's healthy in Thursday's pregame skate.

News: Niklas Backstrom (abdomen), who was dealing with some soreness Tuesday morning, was given a maintenance day by the Wild, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: After resting Niklas Backstrom -- who continues to deal with abdominal issues -- on Tuesday, coach Mike Yeo indicated that he's hoping the goalie can practice Wednesday, then start either Thursday's game against the Oilers or Friday's contest in Vancouver.

Wild's Backstrom Gets Checked Out Over Break

News: Over the Olympic break, Niklas Backstrom visited the abdominal specialist who repaired his sports hernia this past spring, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports.
Analysis: While Niklas Backstrom didn't provide much detail with regard to the visit, he did indicate that he has been given new treatment instructions and off-ice workouts in the hopes of helping manage the soreness that he has dealt with this season.

Wild's Backstrom At Practice Wednesday

News: Niklas Backstrom (general soreness) was present for Wednesday's practice, Chad Graff of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: Niklas Backstrom has battled persistent injuries and soreness throughout the season and probably benefited from the lengthy Olympic break as much as anyone on the Wild roster. He could receive some maintenance days here and there to further aid his recovery, but it's generally expected that he'll be on hand to back up Darcy Kuemper for the Wild's first game out of the break.

Wild's Backstrom Out Thursday

News: Niklas Backstrom will not play Thursday due to general soreness. Johan Gustafsson has been recalled from AHL Iowa to back up Darcy Kuemper.
Analysis: Niklas Backstrom has been dealing with a lower-body injury the past month, so hopefully this isn't a significant setback. After Thursday's contest, he'll have the entire Olympic break to rest up and recover.

Wild's Backstrom Feeling Healthier

News: Niklas Backstrom (lower body) has been able to serve as the backup goalie the past two games.
Analysis: Niklas Backstrom didn't see any action in either contest, but it looks like he'll be ready to go if needed in any future games. The Wild have settled on Darcy Kuemper as their primary goalie while Josh Harding (illness) remains on injured reserve, leaving few starts available for Backstrom.

Wild's Backstrom Back At Practice

News: Niklas Backstrom (lower body) returned to practice Wednesday, Chad Graff of the Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: Considering that Jonas Gustafsson was sent back to AHL Iowa on Wednesday, it would appear that Niklas Backstrom is healthy enough to return. Backstrom has a 5-10-2 record this season, with a .899 save percentage and a 3.02 GAA.

Wild's Backstrom Out Next Few Days

News: Niklas Backstrom received an injection for a lower-body injury over the weekend and will be out for the next few days, Chad Graff of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: Coach Mike Yeo didn't offer a firm timetable for the goalie's return, but did say there's a chance Niklas Backstrom could be ready to serve as a backup for Thursday's game against the Blackhawks. Johan Gustafsson was recalled from Iowa and will serve as the No. 2 goalie while Backstrom is sidelined. Injuries have been an occasional roadblock for Backstrom this season, but his own ineffectiveness has been the bigger issue. He was firmly locked into a backup role before Josh Harding landed on injured reserve with an illness, and has since been passed on the depth chart by AHL call-up Darcy Kuemper, who has made the last four starts for the Wild.

Wild's Backstrom Starting Saturday

News: Niklas Backstrom will will start Saturday's game against the Avalanche.
Analysis: Niklas Backstrom stopped 39-of-40 shots in his last outing and is currently riding a three-game winning streak. He's having a rough season but finally seems to be turning things around. With Josh Harding (illness) reportedly making progress, Backstrom may be headed back to the No. 2 goaltender role soon.

Wild's Backstrom Likely To Start Saturday

News: Niklas Backstrom is likely to start Saturday against Colorado, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Niklas Backstrom looked set to possibly fall behind Darcy Kuemper on the depth chart after a slump, but with a three-game wining streak, including stopping 39-of-40 shots in Thursday's win over Phoenix, he now looks like the primary goalie while Josh Harding is on IR.

Wild's Backstrom Saves 39, Wins In Return

News: Niklas Backstrom stopped 39 of 40 shots in Thursday's win over Phoenix.
Analysis: He'd sat out Tuesday due to abdominal soreness, but looked just fine in his return to the ice. Niklas Backstrom's now won three straight in the absence of Josh Harding (illness).
