Wild Turn To Dubnyk Over Backstrom

News: Niklas Backstrom's new teammate, Devan Dubnyk will start Thursday's game against the Sabres.
Analysis: Niklas Backstrom had previously been on track to start the contest, but the Wild have instead elected to roll with Dubnyk on Thursday, as the team tries to snap out of an 0-5-1 slide.

Wild's Backstrom To Start Tuesday

News: Niklas Backstrom will get the start in net Tuesday against the Penguins.
Analysis: With Darcy Kuemper still recovering from a lower-body injury, Niklas Backstrom will get the start between the pipes for the fourth consecutive game Tuesday. Backstrom is 5-6-3 on the season with a 2.83 GAA and a .892 save percentage.

Wild's Backstrom Struggles In Loss

News: Niklas Backstrom gave up six goals on 35 shots in Monday's 7-2 loss to Pittsburgh. He was replaced in the third period by John Curry. Despite the poor outing, head coach Mike Yeo said Backstrom will start Thursday against Buffalo, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Niklas Backstrom didn't get much help from the defense in front of him, but he didn't respond well and missed some save chances. With Darcy Kuemper out with a lower-body injury, Josh Harding out indefinitely with a multiple sclerosis setback, and Yeo's lack of confidence in Curry, it looks like Backstrom will get several more starts to work his way out of his slump, during which he's allowed three or more goals in 10 consecutive starts.

Wild's Backstrom Struggles In Loss

News: Niklas Backstrom allowed four goals on 35 shots in Sunday's 4-1 loss to the Blackhawks.
Analysis: Niklas Backstrom has now allowed three or more goals in all four appearances, three starts, since starting goalie Darcy Kuemper went down with an injury, all of which were losses. The 36-year-old has been shaky all year and hasn't allowed two or fewer goals in any appearance since Dec. 5. With a 2.83 GAA and .892 save percentage, Backstrom won't be of much value to most fantasy teams even if Kuemper is out for an extended period of time.

Wild's Backstrom To Start In Net Sunday

News: Niklas Backstrom will start in net against Chicago on Sunday, Chad Graff of the Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: Niklas Backstrom is coming off a 3-1 loss to the Predators on Saturday. He'll be looking for his sixth win of the season against the Blackhawks while carrying in a disappointing .893 save percentage.

Wild's Backstrom Allows Three Goals Again

News: Niklas Backstrom allowed three goals on 24 shots in Saturday afternoon's 3-1 loss to the visiting Predators.
Analysis: This was the third straight game Niklas Backstrom has allowed three goals, and considering the nine tallies came on just 60 shots (.850 save percentage), it's no surprise that the Wild were winless in all three. The goaltending situation in St. Paul is a disaster to say the least, with Darcy Kuemper currently shelved with a lower-body issue (he wasn't playing well anyway) and Backstrom not being able to even remotely come close to stealing a game for the struggling Wild. With that being said, don't be shocked to see the recently recalled John Curry get another look in net, perhaps as soon as Sunday against the high-flying Blackhawks in what would be his second start of the season.

Wild's Backstrom Gets Saturday Start

News: Niklas Backstrom will be in the crease for Saturday's game against the Predators, Eric Stromgren of The Tennessean reports.
Analysis: Niklas Backstrom will be the Wild's No. 1 goalie for at least a week with Darcy Kuemper (lower body) on injured reserve. With a 2.73 GAA and .893 save percentage over 16 outings, Backstrom doesn't look to be capable even by the standards of a No. 2 goalie. He'll probably need a top-flight performance from his offense Saturday in order to get the win over the Preds, who will start Vezina Trophy contender Pekka Rinne in the net.

Wild's Backstrom Flops Against 'Hawks

News: Niklas Backstrom, making his first start of what should be semi-regular action in the near future with Darcy Kuemper (shoulder) hurt, stopped only 16 of 19 shots in a 4-2 loss Thursday against the Blackhawks.
Analysis: Kuemper's practice injury landed him on IR, and now Niklas Backstrom likely has a week or so of starting ahead of him, though John Curry could get a shot too. The Finnish veteran's had a poor season, and it's been particularly rough lately, as he's given up 23 goals in his last seven starts and has a save percentage north of .900 exactly zero times in that span.

Wild Tab Backstrom To Start Thursday

News: Niklas Backstrom will get the start between the pipes on Thursday against the Blackhawks.
Analysis: Starting goalie Darcy Kuemper suffered a minor injury in practice on Wednesday, but it was apparently enough to hold him out of Thursday's contest. As a result, Niklas Backstrom will get the nod in his place, and figures to start the vast majority of the Wild's games until Kuemper is fit to return. Backstrom is 5-3-3 with a 2.71 GAA and .896 save percentage this season, making him a rather poor fantasy option.

Wild's Backstrom Struggles In Relief Duty

News: Niklas Backstrom gave up three goals on 14 shots in relief of Darcy Kuemper Saturday against Dallas.
Analysis: While Kuemper will get credit for the loss, Niklas Backstrom has struggled lately, giving up 12 goals in his last four appearances. With only one win his his last four starts, the 36-year-old's lackluster play combined with Kuemper's inconsistency have many wondering whether the Wild might pursue another goalie sometime in the near-future. Backstrom is 5-3-3 on the season with a .896 save percentage and 2.71 GAA. While he won't see much action behind Kuemper, the veteran isn't even a good spot start when he does get the call. There are likely better options out there.

Wild's Backstrom (Illness) Activated From IR

News: Niklas Backstrom (illness) was activated from injured reserve Wednesday, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Niklas Backstrom was able to get in a practice Tuesday, and seemed healthy enough for the Wild to bring him along for the trip to Columbus. He'll serve as the backup to Darcy Kuemper for Wednesday's game, but figures to make his next start over the weekend during the Wild's back-to-back set. John Curry was reassigned to AHL Iowa in a corresponding move.

Wild's Backstrom (Illness) Ready To Practice

News: Niklas Backstrom (illness) reported improvement Tuesday and is ready to resume practicing, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: It hasn't been decided yet if Niklas Backstrom will travel with the team to Columbus for Wednesday's game, but if that's the case, it would likely be just to observe him skating rather than using him as the backup for that night's game. The Wild figure to give Backstrom until the weekend to get back on the ice and regain some injury following his battle with the stomach bug.

Wild's Backstrom Dealing With Stomach Bug

News: The illness that has resulted in Niklas Backstrom's placement on injured reserve is a stomach virus, the Associated Press reports.
Analysis: Niklas Backstrom previously battled a stomach illness less than two weeks earlier, but it didn't end up costing him any time. However, it appears the latest bug he's dealing with is a little more problematic, as he didn't travel with the Wild to Winnipeg for Monday's game. He'll be eligible to return to action Wednesday in Columbus, but it's not known if he's made enough progress with his recovery to be available for the Wild.

Wild's Backstrom (Illness) Placed On IR

News: Niklas Backstrom (illness) was placed on injured reserve Saturday.
Analysis: With Niklas Backstrom still under the weather, the Wild went ahead and brought John Curry up to provide some short-term depth behind Darcy Kuemper. Backstrom will be eligible to return Monday against Winnipeg, but it's uncertain if he'll be ready by that time.

Flu Keeps Wild's Backstrom Out Tuesday

News: Niklas Backstrom is missing Tuesday's game against the Flyers due to the flu, Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: It's Niklas Backstrom's second tango with the flu in as many weeks, as it was a stomach bug that jeopardized his availability to play last Wednesday. He ended up being able to suit up for that contest, but wasn't so fortunate this time around, as Darcy Kuemper was granted the start after Backstrom fell ill during the afternoon. The Wild haven't relayed what kind of bug Backstrom is dealing with this time around, but given that five Wild defensemen have already been hit with the mumps this season, that virus is always a concern whenever one of the team's players is being afflicted by some type of illness.

Wild's Backstrom Scratched From Start Tuesday

News: Niklas Backstrom, who was confirmed as the starter in goal for Tuesday's game against the Flyers following the team's morning skate, will be unavailable for the game due to an undisclosed issue, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Darcy Kuemper will instead make the start for the Wild in an interesting reversal, as it was Niklas Backstrom who was announced as the late starter for the Wild just one week earlier when an illness kept Kuemper unavailable for a game against the Blackhawks. Backstrom had played through that game sick himself, and it's possible he may have picked up another illness over the afternoon yet again. John Curry was recalled on an emergency basis to act as Kuemper's backup for the time being, but expect the Wild to provide word on Backstrom's condition after the game.

Wild's Backstrom To Start Tuesday

News: Niklas Backstrom will start in goal when the Wild take on the Flyers on Tuesday night.
Analysis: As expected, Niklas Backstrom will get the starting nod on Tuesday against the Flyers. Backstrom is 5-3-3 on the season with a .901 save percentage and 2.58 GAA, and will remain a relatively low-upside, but high-floor fantasy option on Tuesday against the Flyers.

Wild's Backstrom Expected To Start Tuesday

News: Niklas Backstrom is expected to start in goal when the Wild take on the Flyers on Tuesday, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Due to Darcy Kuemper's recent struggles between the pipes, Minnesota has decided to lean on Niklas Backstrom a little more heavily. Backstrom is 5-3-3 on the season with a .901 save percentage and 2.58 GAA, and will remain a relatively low-upside, but high floor fantasy option on Tuesday against the Flyers.

Wild's Backstrom Sees Relief Duty Saturday

News: Niklas Backstrom stopped 27 of the 30 shots he faced in relief of Darcy Kuemper in Saturday's overtime loss to the Predators.
Analysis: Not a bad outing for Niklas Backstrom, who is now 5-3-3 on the season with a .901 save percentage and 2.58 GAA. Considering the recent struggles of Kuemper, it's possible Backstrom could see some more starts in the near-future. The 36-year-old makes for a decent fantasy option whenever he gets the call in the crease.

Wild's Backstrom Stops 22 In Loss

News: Niklas Backstrom allowed three goals on 25 shots in Wednesday's 3-2 overtime loss to the Bruins.
Analysis: The veteran netminder has been seeing lots of ice time lately with Darcy Kuemper (illness) out, but he hasn't been very impressive. Niklas Backstrom has allowed 14 goals over his last four starts, and figures to be the backup once again when Kuemper returns.

Wild's Backstrom To Start Wednesday

News: Niklas Backstrom (illness) will be in goal for Wednesday's game against the Bruins, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Niklas Backstrom's status for Wednesday's game was in question due to a stomach illness, but he will be able to take the ice as expected. Fellow goaltender Darcy Kuemper is also dealing with an illness and will not be available Wednesday, so John Curry will serve as Backstrom's backup Wednesday night.

Wild's Backstrom (Illness) In Line To Start

News: Niklas Backstrom, who played through a stomach illness in Tuesday's loss to the Blackhawks, is expected to start Wednesday against the Bruins, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Darcy Kuemper was initially slated to start Tuesday's game, but came down with a stomach bug in the afternoon that limited him to backup duties for the evening. As a result, Niklas Backstrom was thrust into action, only to battle a stomach issue of his own from the first period onward. Backstrom at least seems to be recovering from the illness better than Kuemper, so he'll get the call Wednesday unless his condition takes a turn for the worse. However, given the less-than-optimal health of both of their netminders, expect the Wild to recall either John Curry or Johan Gustafsson from AHL Iowa as an insurance option.

Wild's Backstrom Allows Four In Loss

News: Niklas Backstrom gave up four goals on 38 shots during Tuesday's 5-3 loss in Chicago.
Analysis: This wasn't a bad outing for Niklas Backstrom despite the not-so-pretty stat line, but there's no getting around the fact that he's given up 11 goals on 87 shots (an .874 save mark) over his last three starts. Assuming Darcy Kuemper's undisclosed ailment isn't serious, Backstrom will likely retake a seat on the bench Wednesday against Boston.

Wild To Go With Backstrom On Tuesday

News: Niklas Backstrom will be in the crease Tuesday against the Blackhawks, Chad Graff of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: All indications at morning skate were that Darcy Kuemper was in line to start Tuesday, but the Wild ended up changing direction at the last second. Niklas Backstrom will face a tall order in trying to quiet the sizzling Blackhawks, but could be in line for added duty if Kuemper's undisclosed ailment holds him out further. It's worthwhile to track the circumstances surrounding Kuemper when coach Mike Yeo meets with the press after the game, as it could have major implications for Backstrom.

Wild's Backstrom Clips Coyotes In Shootout

News: Niklas Backstrom stopped 27 of 30 shots Saturday against the Coyotes before prevailing in the shootout for his second win of the season.
Analysis: Making his second start of the week, Niklas Backstrom wasn't particularly outstanding, but managed to come away with back-to-back victories. Coach Mike Yeo has shown decreased faith in No. 1 goalie Darcy Kuemper of late, but Backstrom probably needs to play a little bit better before a legitimate controversy for the starting job emerges.
