Halak Reaches Four-Year, $18M Deal With Isles

News: Jaroslav Halak signed a four-year, $18 million contract with the Islanders on Thursday, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Traded three times in under three months, Jaroslav Halak appears to have finally found a more permanent residence in Long Island. His contract entrenches him as the unquestioned No. 1 goalie for the Islanders, with either Anders Nilsson or Kevin Poulin slated to serve as his backup. Halak was serviceable no matter where he played last season, compiling a 2.25 GAA and .921 save percentage over 52 games.

Caps Trade Halak To Islanders

News: Jaroslav Halak was traded to the Islanders on Thursday in exchange for a 2014 fourth-round draft pick.
Analysis: Twice traded at the deadline -- first to Buffalo, then to Washington -- Jaroslav Halak will head to a new destination for the third time in just over two months. He'll officially become an unrestricted free agent this summer, but the acquisition suggests the Islanders will negotiate a deal to sign him before he hits the open market. If the team can agree to a deal to Halak, it would add some much-needed legitimacy to their goaltending ranks, as Evgeni Nabokov, Anders Nilsson and Kevin Poulin combined to saddle the Islanders with a league-worst .894 save percentage.

Halak, Caps Blank Chicago

News: Jaroslav Halak stopped all 34 shots he faced in Friday's 4-0 win over Chicago.
Analysis: Jaroslav Halak delivered against one of the league's best teams days after a media controversy surrounding his not playing against St. Louis earlier in the week. Halak is a free agent on July 1 and he may not remain with Washington. The Caps' system does little to insulate goaltenders and Halak is will be one of several viable starting netminders on the market.

Caps Go With Halak On Friday

News: Jaroslav Halak will be between the pipes Friday against the Blackhawks, Ben Raby of Washington Capitals Radio Network reports.
Analysis: After watching Braden Holtby pick up the last three starts in goal, Jaroslav Halak will get a chance to end the season on a strong note. He'll hit free agency this offseason and will be looking to land a No. 1 role somewhere after the Blues traded him away at the deadline.

Halak Strong In Washington Loss

News: Jaroslav Halak allowed two goals on 31 shots in Friday's 2-1 loss to New Jersey, his third consecutive loss.
Analysis: Jaroslav Halak has allowed eight goals in the last three games but needed a strong start like Friday's to redeem himself following Tuesday's effort against Dallas. Halak can be a worldbeater at times, but he's going to have to essentially pitch a shutout most nights for Washington to have a chance to win, as the Caps do little to insulate him in the crease.

Capitals' Halak In Line To Start Friday

News: Jaroslav Halak is on track to start Friday's game against the Devils, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Jaroslav Halak will look to get back on track Friday after picking up the loss in his last four starts. He will take on a New Jersey squad that has averaged just 2.00 goals over its last seven games.

Caps Yank Halak Tuesday

News: Jaroslav Halak was pulled Tuesday against Dallas after giving up three goals on 23 shots.
Analysis: Braden Holtby stopped 11 of 13 in relief. While it certainly wasn't Jaroslav Halak's finest hour -- the Stars made him look rather awkward and slow on all three goals -- you normally wouldn't see a goalie yanked after putting up a stat line like that. Perhaps coach Adam Oates was trying to light a fire under his team by making the change, but if so, it didn't work -- they still lost 5-0.

Caps Roll With Halak On Tuesday

News: Jaroslav Halak will start Tuesday's game against the Stars, the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Jaroslav Halak, who is 4-4-0 with a 2.52 GAA average and .899 save percentage against the Stars over his career, is slated to square off against Kari Lehtonen on Tuesday.

Caps' Halak On Track To Start Tuesday

News: Jaroslav Halak was the first goalie off the ice Tuesday morning, indicating that he's in line to start the Caps evening game against the Stars, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Jaroslav Halak, who has suffered three overtime losses in a row, is in line to take aim Tuesday at a Dallas squad that has won two straight games by a combined total of 11-5.

Capitals' Halak Lets In Three In Loss

News: Jaroslav Halak made 26 saves on 29 shots in a shootout loss to the Predators on Sunday.
Analysis: That's three overtime losses in a row for Jaroslav Halak, but he had been playing well before his last two games, which weren't terrible either. He's having a good season, and should start the bulk of the games for Washington going forward.

Caps Start Halak On Sunday

News: Jaroslav Halak will be in goal for the Capitals when they face the Predators on Sunday, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Jaroslav Halak has dropped his last two starts in shootouts but has given up just 12 goals over his last five starts. He is 28-11-6 and sports an impressive 2.25 GAA and .920 save percentage this season.

Caps' Halak Allows Four, Falls In Shootout

News: Jaroslav Halak gave up four goals on 36 shots and two goals on two shootout attempts in Tuesday's 5-4 loss to the Kings.
Analysis: Tough one for Jaroslav Halak, who was making his return from a lower-body injury. However, he's still posted save marks of .927 or better in six of eight starts since joining the Capitals.

Caps' Halak Set To Return Tuesday

News: Jaroslav Halak (lower body) is in line to start Tuesday's game against the Kings, Mike Vogel of WashingtonCaps.com reports.
Analysis: Jaroslav Halak was a late scratch Saturday against the Sharks, but after returning to practice Monday, he's now on track to return to the Caps' net Tuesday night.

Caps' Halak Returns To Practice

News: Jaroslav Halak (lower body) returned to practice Monday, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Jaroslav Halak was a surprise scratch Saturday night after being announced as the starter earlier in the day, but from the looks of it, he only needed the night off to recover from the injury. Assuming he experiences no setbacks while practicing Monday, look for him to occupy the net Tuesday against the Kings.

Caps Roll With Halak On Saturday

News: Jaroslav Halak will draw the starting nod Saturday vs. the Sharks, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Jaroslav Halak saw his three-game win streak come to an end Thursday vs. the Kings, but he was once again airtight between the pipes allowing only one goal in the shootout loss. With a little more offensive support against the Sharks, Halak figures to keep the Capitals competitive.

Capitals' Halak Out With Lower-Body Injury

News: Jaroslav Halak (lower body) was a late scratch and will not start for the Capitals during Saturday's contest in San Jose, Katie Carrera of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Jaroslav Halak did not take part in Friday's practice, but was thought to be healthy enough to take part in Saturday's game in San Jose. However, he was scratched minutes prior to the game. He will back up Braden Holtby and be re-evaluated after the game. Halak is 4-2-1 with a 2.13 GAA and .935 save percentage in his last seven starts for the Caps after being acquired from the Sabres on March 5.

Caps' Halak Allows One Goal, Falls In Shootout

News: Jaroslav Halak stopped 27 of 28 shots through 65 minutes of action Thursday in Los Angeles, but was defeated in the shootout.
Analysis: He allowed the Kings to tally on two of three shootout attempts, so the game didn't end in such fine fashion for Jaroslav Halak. Nonetheless, he continues to post rock-solid rate stats for the Caps, with a 2.13 GAA and .935 save mark in seven games.

Capitals' Halak To Start Thursday

News: Jaroslav Halak will get the start in net on Thursday against the Kings, Katie Carrera of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: This will be the seventh straight start for Jaroslav Halak, who was acquired at the trade deadline from Buffalo. He's 4-2 in six starts for the Caps, sporting a 2.35 GAA and .931 save percentage in that span. Halak will face a tough matchup against the Kings, but he's played well against tough competition recently, so unless you have a better option, he's worth starting.

Halak's 43 Saves Preserve Caps' Win

News: Jaroslav Halak made 43 saves in a 3-2 win at Anaheim on Tuesday night.
Analysis: This outing helps solidify his grasp on the No. 1 netminder's job in Washington. The Caps are in a fight for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, so expect the coaching staff to tap him repeatedly the rest of the way.

Capitals Turn To Halak On Tuesday

News: Jaroslav Halak will play between the pipes Tuesday vs. the Ducks, Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register reports.
Analysis: It will mark the sixth straight start for Jaroslav Halak, who has safely jumped Braden Holtby for the No. 1 goalie spot on the Washington depth chart. He's proven to be a much more stable option than Holtby in the net, allowing either two or three goals in each of his five starts with his new team.

Capitals' Halak Stops 27 In Win

News: Jaroslav Halak made 27 saves on 29 shots in a win over the Maple Leafs on Sunday.
Analysis: Jaroslav Halak has improved the goaltending situation for the Capitals since coming over in a trade. While he owes his 2.25 GAA and 27 wins in part to his time in St. Louis, he can still put up good numbers in Washington.

Halak, Caps Hold On

News: Jaroslav Halak stopped 38 shots in Friday's 4-3 win over Vancouver, his first win in the last three starts.
Analysis: Jaroslav Halak has won two of his four starts since arriving in Washington, but he isn't finding playing in front of the Caps as cushy of a gig as it was in St. Louis. Halak figures to see most of the starts going forward as the Caps battle for a playoff spot; just don't be surprised to see an uptick in his goals-against average.

Caps Confirm Halak As Starter

News: Jaroslav Halak will start Friday vs. the Canucks.
Analysis: As anticipated, Jaroslav Halak will attempt to even his record with the Capitals at 2-2 as he takes on a floundering Canucks squad.

Caps' Halak On Track To Start Friday

News: Jaroslav Halak was the first goalie off the ice Friday and will presumably start against the Canucks, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: If Jaroslav Halak does in fact get the call Friday, it would be his fourth straight start. It's probably safe to say he's wrestled the starting job away from Braden Holtby at this point, and there's little reason to think he won't turn in another quality performance Friday against a Canucks team that has scored more than two goals in a game just once in its last 12 tries.

Caps' Halak Takes Tough Loss

News: Jaroslav Halak stopped 32 of 34 shots against the Penguins on Tuesday, but got no offensive support in a 2-0 loss.
Analysis: Hey, sometimes you're on the wrong end of Marc-Andre Fleury's fifth shutout of the year. Jaroslav Halak's proven to be a more reliable NHL netminder than Braden Holtby to this point and seems likely to draw a majority of the starts for Washington down the stretch.
