Oilers' Gagner Pots Game-Winner Friday

News: Sam Gagner scored his 10th goal of the season late in the third period to tie the game and then scored during the shootout to lead the Oilers past the Coyotes 3-2 on Friday.
Analysis: It was quite the end of the night for Sam Gagner, who was relatively quiet until the very end. He scored the game-tying goal with just 41 seconds remaining in the game and then was the only one to find the net during the shootout. He had been held without a point in his three previous games, but Friday's goal now gives the defensive-minded center 35 points on the year.

Oilers' Gagner Lights The Lamp Friday

News: Sam Gagner scored his ninth goal of the season as the Oilers' beat the Ducks 4-3 in overtime Friday.
Analysis: Sam Gagner had missed the last two days of practice with an ankle injury but got right down to business with an early first period goal to negate the quick lead the Ducks jumped out to just 35 seconds into the game. He's got two goals and one assist over his last five games giving him a total of 34 points in 60 games this season. The minus-25 rating could certainly use some help though.

Oilers' Gagner Expected To Play Friday

News: Sam Gagner (ankle) is expected to play Friday versus the Ducks, according to the Oilers' official site.
Analysis: There was some thought that Sam Gagner may have reinjured his ankle after missing practice Wednesday and Thursday, but apparently those were just maintenance days to allow the ankle to heal and he won't miss any playing time.

Oilers' Gagner Skips Practice Again

News: Sam Gagner (undisclosed) missed practice again Thursday.
Analysis: Sam Gagner's absence from Wednesday's practice was believed to be for maintenance purposes more than anything, but now that he's been out two days in a row, it's possible an aggravated ankle injury could be at play. We probably won't find out his status for Friday's game against the Ducks until after morning skate.

Oilers' Gagner Misses Practice Wednesday

News: Sam Gagner was absent from practice Wednesday, according to the Oilers web site.
Analysis: There was no reason given for his absence and it could just be a case of Sam Gagner being given a day off.

Oilers' Gagner Tallies Assist, Goal In Win

News: Sam Gagner registered a goal and assist in Tuesday's win over the Predators.
Analysis: Aside from being held scoreless in his previous two games, Sam Gagner has come out of the gate strong in March, scoring in each of his other six games this month. He's compiled two goals and seven assists during that time, but only has a plus-1 rating to show for it.

Oilers' Gagner Returns To Lineup

News: Sam Gagner (ankle) played over 20 minutes in his return to the lineup Sunday.
Analysis: Sam Gagner didn't tally a point and was a minus one in the game but also made it through the contest without any setbacks. He will once again center the second line.

Oilers' Gagner To Go Through Warmups Sunday

News: Sam Gagner (ankle) will take part in warmups prior to Sunday's game against the Hurricanes.
Analysis: If Sam Gagner makes it through warmups without issue, he'll presumably get the green light to play against Carolina, but Philip Larsen will slot into the rotation if the team decides to hold Gagner out for another game. He played through the ankle injury Thursday but sat out Friday's tilt.

Oilers' Gagner Will Sit Friday

News: Sam Gagner (ankle) won't play Friday vs. the Red Wings.
Analysis: Sam Gagner came into Thursday's game vs. the Blues nursing the ankle injury, so it's unclear if he aggravated the injury during the contest or if coach Dallas Eakins simply didn't want him playing back-to-back nights. Whatever the case may be, we should know before Sunday's game against the Hurricanes whether or not Gagner will be available. Anton Lander takes his place as the second-line center Friday night.

Oilers' Gagner Playing Thursday

News: Sam Gagner (ankle) will play in Thursday's game against the Blues.
Analysis: Sam Gagner missed Wednesday's practice but is apparently ready for Thursday's game. With seven points (one goal) through five March games, he's in the midst of his most productive stretch this season.

Oilers' Gagner Hopeful To Play Thursday

News: Coach Dallas Eakins is hopeful Sam Gagner (ankle) will play Thursday against the Blues.
Analysis: Sam Gagner apparently made it through morning skate without incident, and if he passes evaluation from the team's medical staff during the afternoon, he'll likely be cleared to suit up Thursday. The 24-year-old is in the midst of one of his most productive stretches of play on the season, as he's totaled seven points over five games in March.

Oilers' Gagner (Ankle) Misses Wednesday Practice

News: Sam Gagner (ankle) did not participate in the Oilers' Wednesday practice in St. Louis, the Edmonton Sun reports.
Analysis: Sam Gagner exited Tuesday night's game after taking a controversial hit from the Wild's Matt Cooke, and was unable to return to action. The fact that he missed practice suggests that the hit did more damage that initially thought, leaving his status for Thursday's matchup with the Blues up in the air.

Oilers' Gagner Tallies Two Points

News: Sam Gagner scored a goal and added a helper against the Kings on Sunday.
Analysis: Sam Gagner was involved in trade rumors, but they never came to fruition. However, that's not been a problem recently, as he has six points in his last four games. Still, on the season, he's having a bad year, as he only has seven goals, 30 points, and is a minus-20.

Oilers' Gagner Gathers Two Assists

News: Sam Gagner picked up a pair of assists Thursday in an overtime win against the Islanders, giving him points in three straight games.
Analysis: All those points have been assists, as Sam Gagner hasn't scored a goal since way back on Jan. 14. With nine assists in his last 15 games and ever-unreliable plus-minus, he's looked far less exciting than he did during his lockout-shortened breakout last year.

Oilers' Gagner Could Be Headed To LA

News: Sam Gagner is once again hearing his name involved in trade rumors, according to the Edmonton Journal.
Analysis: Sam Gagner's name has been thrown around in potential deals for a couple of seasons now as the Oilers are starting to realize that they will have to trade some of their offensive depth to acquire much needed help on defense. The NHL roster freeze starts Friday at 3PM EST so this deal will have to happen quickly or it will have to wait until after the Olympics.

Just A Maintenance Day For Oilers' Gagner

News: Coach Dallas Eakins indicated Sam Gagner's (ankle) absence from practice was only for maintenance purposes.
Analysis: With the NHL schedule past its halfway point, teams figure to take a more cautious approach in managing the health of their players the rest of the way, making Sam Gagner's absence not very surprising. Assume that his ankle injury is nothing more than minor soreness, and expect him back in the lineup Tuesday vs. the Stars.

Oilers' Gagner Not On Ice Monday

News: Sam Gagner is nursing an ankle injury and was not on the ice for Monday's practice, Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal reports.
Analysis: It wasn't reported that Sam Gagner had left the game with any sort of injury in Sunday's loss to the Blackhawks, so it appears he felt well enough to play through the ailment. It could just be the case where Monday's absence from practice is for maintenance purposes, but as of now, he should be considered questionable for Tuesday's tilt with the Stars.

Oilers' Gagner Could Be Traded

News: Sam Gagner's name is once again being heard in trade rumors, according to the Edmonton Journal.
Analysis: Sam Gagner just signed a $14.4 million contract that includes a no-move clause, but that clause doesn't kick in until after this season. The Oilers have plenty of holes to fill, and it stands to reason that they will deal one of their young forwards eventually, but Gagner certainly wouldn't bring back as much as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle or Nail Yakupov would.

Oilers' Gagner Notches Two Helpers

News: Sam Gagner picked up two assists against the Lightning on Sunday.
Analysis: Sam Gagner is struggling through a rough season. He only has 16 points and is minus-17 for the Oilers, though he's far from the only one on the team with a bad rating.

Oilers' Gagner Handed Misconduct

News: Sam Gagner was handed a five-minute major and a game misconduct in the first period for a cross-check to Paul Stastny's face Thursday night against the Avalanche.
Analysis: Sam Gagner has had a tough season so far. After coming back from a broken jaw, he's had trouble finding his groove with the Oilers and been moved all over the lineup by head coach Dallas Eakins. Gagner seemed genuinely concerned with Stastny's well-being and was originally handed a two-minute minor before the referees huddled and made the change. It was a bad hit, but one made in frustration because of the Oilers' poor play, not because Gagner's a dirty player. Gagner played just 4:53.

Oilers' Gagner Demonted To Fourth Line

News: Sam Gagner was demoted to the fourth line for Sunday's game versus the Ducks, according to the Oilers web site.
Analysis: Sam Gagner only had 11 points in 21 games so far this season but did respond to the demotion by scoring his fourth goal of the season in the loss to Anaheim on Sunday.

Two Helpers For Oilers' Gagner

News: Sam Gagner assisted on Taylor Hall's early-first-period goal and Jordan Eberle's overtime winner Tuesday against Carolina.
Analysis: It's been a quiet, injury-shortened season for Sam Gagner, but he's been better over his last dozen games, collecting 10 of the 11 points on his ledger. Check your league's wire to see if someone kicked him to the curb when he was injured or cold.

Oilers' Gagner Finds Net In Loss

News: Sam Gagner scored his second goal of the season during Friday's 4-2 loss to the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: With the Oilers down 4-0 after two, Sam Gagner finally gave the team something to get excited about when he found the net about halfway through the third period. He's got five points in his last six games, but he's going to need to find the net with a little more frequency if he hopes to maintain his 15-goal career average.

Tough Debut For Oilers' Gagner

News: Sam Gagner went minus-4 in his season debut Tuesday after missing the first 13 games of the year with an injured jaw. However, he showed signs of promise, as he skated a team-high 22:01, won 13 of 18 face-offs, laid three hits, put three shots on goal and had a takeaway in the 4-0 loss to Toronto.
Analysis: Sometimes, you have to look past the basic box-score stats, and this is one of those times. Considering this was Sam Gagner's first NHL action since the end of last season, it was a solid effort despite his team being shut out.
