Gillies' Outburst Sparks Columbus

News: Colton Gillies scored a goal and assisted on another in Columbus' 5-1 win over Calgary on Friday, his first points of the season.
Analysis: The checking winger has not been seeing much ice time this season, playing a modest 8:24 per-contest heading into Friday. Odds are he's not going to put up one point in most games, let alone two. He has more value to Columbus than to your roster.

Jackets' Gillies A Healthy Scratch For Opener

News: Colton Gillies was in the press box for Saturday's 3-2 shootout win over the Predators.
Analysis: Matt Calvert beat him out for a spot on the fourth line, so while no one on the Jackets' roster is exactly a lock to keep their jobs Colton Gillies may have to wait for an injury to get his chance at regular action.

Jackets' Gillies Has Busy Night Saturday

News: Colton Gillies scored an empty net goal and added a fighting major and four hits in Saturday's win over the Coyotes.
Analysis: He also chipped in seven PIMs in total, two blocked shots and was a plus-1 on the game. Colton Gillies has had a minimal impact since joining the Blue Jackets, but with Sammy Pahlsson now in Vancouver there's an opportunity for someone like him to step up on a checking line.

Jackets' Gillies Ends Long Goalless Drought

News: Colton Gillies snapped a 43-game goalless streak during Wednesday's loss to the Kings.
Analysis: The former Minnesota first-rounder now has a resounding two points in seven games since being picked up by the Blue Jackets. Columbus has nothing to lose by continuing to give him chances to blossom, but Colton Gillies is a long way from having any fantasy value.

Blue Jackets' Gillies Records Assist In Debut

News: Colton Gillies (lower body) picked up an assist in his first game with the Blue Jackets on Tuesday night.
Analysis: Colton Gillies replaced Dane Byers (suspension) in the lineup and made an immediate impact in the Blue Jackets' victory. Gillies should remain in the lineup for at least a couple more games until Byers returns, but after scoring just two points in 37 games with the Wild this season, don't expect a sudden jump in fantasy production.

Columbus Claims Gillies On Waivers

News: Columbus made a waiver claim for Colton Gillies (lower body), Minneapolis Star Tribune writer Michael Russo reports.
Analysis: The Wild hoped to send Colton Gillies down to the AHL, but Columbus scooped him up instead. Gillies has only three points (one goal) in his last 44 NHL games, but to be fair he did play on limited minutes. Still, he's only someone to keep an eye on in most leagues.

Minnesota Places Gillies On Waivers

News: Colton Gillies (lower body) was placed on waivers Friday, TSN's Bob McKenzie reports.
Analysis: Colton Gillies has just two assists in 37 games this year, so he's not even really someone worth monitoring in most cases.

Wild's Gillies Questionable With Lower Body Injury

News: Colton Gillies is questionable for Thursday's game at Chicago with a lower body injury, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: He missed part of Tuesday's game with the injury. He's not a sure bet for ice time even when healthy, so avoid him until he's back to full strength.

Wild's Gillies A Healthy Scratch

News: Colton Gillies was a healthy scratch in Tuesday's loss at Calgary.
Analysis: He took a bad penalty that changed the game in Monday's loss, so he's in head coach Mike Yeo's doghouse. Until he gains Yeo's confidence (this is his second benching this season), he can't be relied on for ice time.

Wild's Gillies To Fill In For Injured Setoguchi

News: Colton Gillies is expected to take the place of injured forward Devin Setoguchi (leg) on Thursday against the Kings, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: The 22-year-old forward has played in 25 games this season. He has two assists and no goals. If Setoguchi is sidelined for an extended period of time look for Colton Gillies to pick up the ice time in his absence.

Gillies On Wild's Fourth Line Thursday

News: Colton Gillies will skate on Minnesota's fourth line when the Wild take the ice Thursday at Los Angeles, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Technically, he's replacing the injured Devin Setoguchi in the active lineup, but he won't take Setoguchi's spot on the first line. Temper your scoring expectations accordingly.

Wild's Gillie A Healthy Scratch Again

News: Colton Gillies will be held out of the lineup as a healthy scratch for the second consecutive game, the Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Colton Gillies is obviously disappointed with his coaches' decision, but perhaps this could motivate the young winger.

Wild's Gillies A Healthy Scratch

News: Colton Gillies was a healthy scratch in Monday's win over Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Colton Gillies was one of head coach Mike Yeo's best players last year when he was the coach at Houston of the AHL, but he's done little so far with the Wild. Gillies has just two points and 13 shots on goal in 23 games.

Wild's Gillies Could See Larger Role

News: Colton Gillies has looked fast, physical and assertive so far during training camp and should be a fixture on the Wild's fourth line and possibly penalty kill, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: He signed a one-way contract in the offseason, so he seems set to make the roster and has some upside since it sounds like he could have a larger role than expected. He played for new head coach Mike Yeo at Houston of the AHL last season during the team's success playoff run, so that bodes well for him to get more opportunities.

Wild Keep Gillies

News: The Wild have signed Gillies to a two-year contract worth $1.25 million, TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: Gillies, who played seven games with the Wild this past season, scoring one goal, will look to stick with the big club in 2011-12 after spending most of the 2010-11 campaign with AHL Houston, where he notched 26 points and 82 PIM in 64 games.

Wild's Gillies Recalled From AHL

News: Gilles was recalled from Houston of the AHL after Saturday's game, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: He could get decent ice time the final few games as the Wild look toward next season and rest some injured veterans.

Wild Send Gillies to Houston

News: Gillies has been sent back down to Houston of the AHL, according to the Wild's Official Twitter Feed.
Analysis: The team has some regular forwards working their way back from injuries, so Gillies gets the boot. He was thought to be up longer than this, so we have to wonder if Pierre-Marc Bouchard's return may be around the corner. Gillies has just seven points in 48 NHL games, so he's really not worth your time right now.

Wild's Gillies Gets First Game of Season

News: Gillies made his first appearance of the season in Thursday's win over Washington. He didn't have a point or a shot in nearly seven minutes of ice time.
Analysis: While Gillies isn't going to have a large role in the short term, it looks like he'll remain with the Wild and won't be sent back to the AHL.

Wild's Gillies Recalled From AHL

News: Gillies was recalled from Houston of the AHL, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Matt Cullen, Martin Havlat and several other Wild players are sick with a bug running through the locker room, so Gillies may be needed. He has a goal and an assist in four games with Houston. Even if he doesn't get on the ice for Tuesday's game, it sounds like he'll be up with Minnesota for a longer stretch at some point this season.

Wild not rushing Gillies back

News: The Sports Xchange reports twenty-three games now and Wild center James Sheppard has yet to score a goal during a season he was supposed to break out under a new offensive-minded coach. This is why left wing Colton Gillies, who played 45 games last season as a 19-year-old, is in the minors. The Wild doesn't want Gillies to follow in Sheppard's footsteps. "I told him after camp, 'Don't sit by the phone whenever there's an injury and wait for a call-up,'" Wild GM Chuck Fletcher said. "We don't want to just bring him up for a game here or two games there and send him down. We think mentally that would be even harder on him. The goal has been for him to go down there, get a lot of ice time, play special teams and play in a lot more situations than he could here at this stage of his career. When he comes back, we want him to have a real good chance to be here for the rest of his career."
Analysis: When Gillies was delivered the news that he didn't make the Wild out of training camp, the 20-year-old had to fight back tears. "I was devastated," said Gillies, the 16th overall pick in 2007. "It kind of felt like everything I did in the summer, and I worked so hard and I had all these goals, was for nothing. But once I actually got down here to Houston, I started to embrace it. I'm really enjoying myself and know it's for the best." Gillies has seven points in 21 games for Houston, so it's not like he is tearing up the AHL. Gillies was drafted more for Lemaire's defensive system, so we aren't sure what to expect from the former first-rounder. He remains just a long-term Fantasy keeper.

Wild put Gillies in minors

News: Minnesota Wild left wing Colton Gillies has been sent to the minors. Gillies was assigned to Minnesota's AHL affiliate, the Houston Aeros. The move was made Monday, reducing the team's training camp roster to 26 players. The list must be down to at most 23 players by Wednesday, the NHL's deadline for the regular season. The Wild's opener is at Columbus on Saturday.
Analysis: The 20-year-old Gillies was Minnesota's first-round draft pick in 2007. He spent last season with the Wild, scoring two goals and tallying five assists in 45 games. It seems as though his call up was a little premature and Minnesota wants him to work on his game in the minors. Consider Gillies more of a long-term Fantasy keeper.

Gillies scores for Minnesota

News: Minnesota C Colton Gillies scored his second goal of the season on Thursday against the Flames in what ended up being a 3-2 overtime loss. The goal put the Wild up 2-1 at the time when Gillies beat Kiprusoff.
Analysis: Gillies has been with big boys this season but hasn't made much of an impact this season. He has only five points on the season with two goals and three assists. He remains a low-end option not yet worth using in Fantasy.

Gillies' confidence starting to rise

News: Wild rookie forward Colton Gillies has improved lately, although there's nothing on the score sheet to show for it -- he has just one goal and three assists so far in his rookie season -- except for ice time. That is a telling statistic, though. Gillies played 11-plus minutes in last Tuesday's win against Toronto and was sent out for critical shifts in the third period of Saturday's overtime victory at Vancouver. "It's just kind of starting to click for me," Gillies said. "I don't know if it's the confidence or the video that I do. I just feel a little more prepared."
Analysis: Coach Jacques Lemaire said he's been pleased by what he's seen from Gillies over the past two weeks. "Often a player will say, 'Well, Coach has got to give me confidence so I get better,"' Lemaire said. "Well, I heard that many, many, many, many, many, many, many -- that's not a recording -- many times. But when the guy plays well, he gets to play. When the guy does something that you like, and it's not only points, he gets it. It's the confidence when he's on the ice. You see that he knows what he's doing. You know that he's in control and he sees what's coming, and he reacts to that." Gillies might be improving in the eyes of the Wild's coaching staff, but without the points, he isn't doing much in Fantasy. Rookies tend to struggle in their first year under Lemaire since he demands they been ready defensively before jumping up ice on offensive attacks. Gillies remains just a long-term Fantasy keeper.

Wild GM backing younger players

News: The Sports Xchange reports the Wild has been scrutinized for playing three "kids" at once, but general manager Doug Risebrough said he sees improvement from Colton Gillies, 19, James Sheppard, 20, and Benoit Pouliot, 22. "We wanted to get younger, and some of that youth is starting to mature," Risebrough said. "It's not easy, and it's been tough for some of them, but I'm starting to see what I thought would happen by the end of the year. They're becoming good players and contributing more."
Analysis: Sheppard has been the most disappointing player of the trio. Minnesota came into the season with high hopes of him being a No. 2 center behind Mikko Koivu, but he just hasn't stepped into that role. While Sheppard, Gillies and Pouliot might have bright futures, they have limited Fantasy appeal at this time.

Gillies knocks in first goal

News: Colton Gillies knocked in the rebound, and the 19-year-old rookie wore a wide grin. His Minnesota Wild teammates and coaches were smiling and cheering, too. Finally, they had a lead. Finally, they found some offense. Gillies scored his first NHL goal, giving Minnesota the lead in the second period and sparking the Wild to a 4-1 victory over New York -- the Islanders' eighth straight loss. "The guys just needed a little confidence boost out there," said Gillies, the Wild's 2007 first-round draft pick. "I mean if I can score, anyone can score, right?
Analysis: Gillies has played in just 15 games this season and has managed just four points. It would seem to make sense for Minnesota to send Gillies down to the minors, but they continue to keep him around Minnesota. Until he gets frequent PT, Gillies is best owned in long-term keeper leagues.
