Sabres' Sulzer Headed To Germany On Five-Year Deal

News: Alexander Sulzer (concussion) has signed a five-year contract with German club Kolner Haie, Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports.
Analysis: Set to become a free agent this summer, Alexander Sulzer elected to leave the NHL after playing 57 games with the Sabres over the last three seasons. He had his 2013-14 campaign cut short by a concussion suffered March 13, and indicated last month that he was still experiencing headaches. Sulzer, a native of Germany, will presumably be ready to play when Kolner Haie's season kicks off.

Sabres' Sulzer Out For Road Trip

News: Alexander Sulzer (upper body) will not travel with the Sabres during their five-game road trip beginning Tuesday in Calgary, John Vogl of the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: Alexander Sulzer had previously been ruled out for a week after suffering the head injury last Thursday, and his being ruled out of the road trip would seem to suggest he's nursing a concussion. The Sabres will be down to just six healthy defenseman when they begin the road trip, as Tyler Myers (elbow) will also remain in Buffalo with Sulzer.

Sabres' Sulzer To Miss At Least A Week

News: Alexander Sulzer, who left Thursday's game against the Hurricanes with a a head injury, will miss at least a week, The Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: The team hasn't said anything yet, but knowing it's at least a week for Alexander Sulzer's estimate, the worry is that it's a concussion or concussion-like symptoms. The defenseman just came back from an unrelated industry, so it's been a rough spell for him lately. The team might need to recall Chad Ruhwedel to provide blue line depth in Sulzer's absence.

Sabres' Sulzer Suffers Another Injury

News: Alexander Sulzer left Thursday's game with an upper-body injury and will not return.
Analysis: Making his return from a lower-body injury, Alexander Sulzer logged just 1:23 of ice time before being forced back out of action after a hit by Carolina's Jiri Tlusty. Head coach Ted Nolan said after the game that Sulzer will be likely out for a week.

Sabres' Sulzer Draws Back In Thursday

News: Alexander Sulzer (lower body) will return to the lineup Thursday against the Hurricanes.
Analysis: Alexander Sulzer was given a one-to-two-week recovery timetable after suffering the lower-body injury last Friday, but it appears he'll hit the low end of that frame after skating the last few days without incident. He's expected to replace Chad Ruhwedel in the Sabres' lineup.

Sabres' Sulzer Closing In On Return

News: Alexander Sulzer (lower body) was on the ice at Tuesday's morning skate and looks to be close to a return, Amy Moritz of the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: While Alexander Sulzer won't be available for Tuesday's tilt with the Predators, coach Ted Nolan suggested Sulzer could be back on the ice Thursday vs. the Hurricanes. He'll be monitored at Wednesday's practice before Nolan and the team's medical staff get a better idea when he'll make his return.

Sabres' Sulzer Out Two Weeks

News: Alexander Sulzer (lower body) was hurt in Friday's game and will be out for one to two weeks, reports Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News.
Analysis: Alexander Sulzer was a depth defensemen for the Sabres and has had little impact for them on the ice. This gives a chance for some of the Sabres' young defensemen to play, and since the Sabres have been long out of playoff contention, they can afford to let Sulzer recover at a comfortable pace. His replacement is speculated to be Rostislav Klesla, recently acquired from Washington, however Klesla has yet to report to Rochester and his whereabouts isn't confirmed. Rochester would like to keep Chad Ruhwedel, Rasmus Ristolainen and Mark Pysyk for its own playoff run, even though all three have played for the Sabres this season.

Sulzer Providing Little Production For Sabres

News: Alexander Sulzer has two points and a minus-2 rating over 19 games with the Sabres this season.
Analysis: Alexander Sulzer has been a more steady member of the Sabres' lineup recently and is averaging 19:13 of ice time on the season, but is overall output leaves a lot to be desired. Even his totals in the defensive categories (42 blocks, 10 hits) aren't particularly impressive.

Sabres' Sulzer To Play Tuesday

News: Alexander Sulzer (undisclosed) will return from IR to play Tuesday against the Jets, WGR 550 reports.
Analysis: The Sabres sent two blueliners down Tuesday morning and only recalled one, solidifying the comments of head coach Ted Nolan that Alexander Sulzer is ready to play again.

Sabres' Sulzer Close To Returning

News: Interim coach Ted Nolan said Alexander Sulzer (undisclosed) is nearing a return from injured reserve, Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports. "[He's] pretty close," Nolan said of Sulzer. "Probably after this, one more game and he should be ready to go."
Analysis: Alexander Sulzer was present for Friday's practice and if Nolan's projection holds, the defenseman should be back on the ice Tuesday against Winnipeg. He appeared in just five games prior to the injury and shouldn't be viewed as an especially impactful fantasy option on the blue line.

Sabres' Sulzer Likely Placed On IR

News: Alexander Sulzer has missed three straight practices and likely headed to the IR, reports Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News.
Analysis: Cody McCormick is set to return Thursday, and once Brayden McNabb comes back from a one-game AHL assignment, Alexander Sulzer is likely headed to the IR to make room for everyone. He will miss Thursday's game against the Rangers.

News: Alexander Sulzer (undisclosed) sat out Wednesday's practice.

Sabres Recall Sulzer On Saturday

News: The Sabres have recalled Alexander Sulzer from AHL Rochester, according to Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News.
Analysis: Alexander Sulzer has two goals and five assists through 10 games with Rochester this season and was called up to provide some more exprience on the blueline. The right-shooting Sulzer was paired with Christian Ehrhoff and all signs indicate that Sulzer will play Saturday. The Sabres ran four pairs in practice and one of Brayden McNabb-Mark Pysyk and Mike Weber-Jamie McBain will sit.

Sabres Send Sulzer Back To Rochester

News: With the removal of defenseman Henrik Tallinder from injured reserve, Alexander Sulzer will head back to Rochester of the AHL.

Sabres Call Up Sulzer

News: Alexander Sulzer has been called up from Rochester of the AHL, according to Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News.
Analysis: Henrik Tallinder suffered an upper-body injury during Friday's loss to Ottawa, so it looks like Alexander Sulzer will accompany the Sabres on Saturday's trip to Pittsburgh. If Tallinder can't play, it'll be Sulzer or Jamie McBain entering the defensive rotation.

Sabres Waive Sulzer

News: Alexander Sulzer was waived by the Sabres on Sunday, the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: The Sabres are hoping to pass Alexander Sulzer through waivers and send him to AHL Rochester, where he'd see more regular ice time. The 29-year-old appeared in 17 games last season for the NHL club.

Sabres' Sulzer Back To Good Health

News: Alexander Sulzer, who underwent surgery in March to repair a damaged ACL, played in Saturday's preseason game and appears healthy as he competes for a job on the Opening Night roster, The Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: Alexander Sulzer isn't much of a scorer, but he's a decent depth defenseman and the Sabres seem to have taken a liking to him after he was acquired a couple seasons ago as a throw-in with the Cody Hodgson-Zach Kassian trade. With two other blueliners getting sent down Monday, the Sabres are down to eight healthy defensemen competing for the six starting jobs.

Sabres Bring Back Sulzer

News: Alexander Sulzer (knee) re-signed with Buffalo on Saturday, WGR 550 reports.
Analysis: Alexander Sulzer underwent surgery in March to repair a damaged ACL, so it's not clear just what his availability might be in the early-to-mid parts of the 2013-14 season. Outside of an eight-point burst in 15 games during 2011, Sulzer generally hasn't shown much upside, in any case.

Sabres' Sulzer To Become Free Agent

News: Alexander Sulzer (knee) is headed for unrestricted free agency, reports The Buffalo News.
Analysis: Alexander Sulzer posted four points in 17 games, but finished the season on the IR following knee surgery. He has surprised in the past with some offensive spurts, but will likely remain a depth option for any team he signs with.

Sabres Place Sulzer On IR

News: Alexander Sulzer, who suffered a lower-body injury in the first period Saturday against the Islanders, was placed on IR on Monday, The Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: Alexander Sulzer will miss at least the Sabres' two-game trip to Florida this week for games against the Lightning and Panthers, while the team called up Adam Pardy to take his place on the roster.

Sabres Lose Sulzer To Injury

News: Alexander Sulzer missed the final two periods of Saturday's game after suffering a lower-body injury, reports the Associated Press.
Analysis: He hasn't been delivering much offense for fantasy owners, but he does deliver a number of blocked shots. There's no word yet on the severity of the injury.

Sabres' Sulzer To Be Healthy Scratch Tuesday

News: Alexander Sulzer will be scratched for Tuesday's game in Ottawa, reports Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News.
Analysis: This is likely less about Alexander Sulzer's play than it is about getting the struggling Tyler Myers back into the lineup. Coach Lindy Ruff is clearly experimenting, so don't necessarily expect Sulzer to be scratched on an ongoing basis. The German defender has four points in 12 games this season and carries a plus-4 rating.

Sabres' Sulzer Returns Successfully

News: Alexander Sulzer, who was benched for Tuesday's loss to the Leafs, returned to action Thursday and scored his first goal of the season in the win against Boston.
Analysis: It was a big one, as it tied the game at four apiece and started a run of four straight Buffalo goals in an important early season win. Alexander Sulzer isn't much of a fantasy producer, but he's stepped up his offensive game a bit after being a throw-in in the Cody Hodgson-Zack Kassian trade last season. He now has a surprising 10 points in 21 games with the Sabres.
