Caps' Alzner Has First Multi-Point Game Of Season

News: Karl Alzner scored a goal and added an assist in Thursday's overtime win against Columbus.
Analysis: After netting just three points in the first 25 games of the year, Karl Alzner's picked up four over the last six, including his first two goals on the campaign. Still, he's not much of a fantasy asset, as he's never cleared 18 points in a season and doesn't make any special contributions in the secondary stats.

Caps' Alzner Gets First Goal In Saturday's Win

News: Karl Alzner netted his first goal of the season in Washington's 4-1 win over New Jersey on Saturday.
Analysis: Karl Alzner is more known for his abilities as a stay-at-home defenseman, Alzner has never scored more than two goals in an NHL season despite showing more of a scoring touch in his WHL days. With a goal and four points to his name this season, Alzner's value to the Capitals as a defensive specialist vastly outpaces his value in fantasy circles.

Caps' Alzner Tallies Assist In Saturday's Win

News: Karl Alzner finished with an assist, one shot, and a plus-1 rating over 17:41 of ice time in Washington's 3-1 win over Calgary on Saturday.
Analysis: Karl Alzner has been a steady player alongside Matt Niskanen and his two assists in seven games puts him on pace for a career year...of 23 points, if the trend holds. Alzner is a reliable, top-4 defenseman for the Capitals and is off to a solid start this season, but his lack of offensive consistency makes him fairly insignificant from a fantasy perspective outside of the deepest of leagues.

Two Helpers For Caps' Alzner

News: Karl Alzner assisted on two of the Caps' four goals in their win over the Maple Leafs on Sunday.
Analysis: Karl Alzner also provided three blocks in the game, an area where fantasy players can probably count on him for production more so than assists. The defenseman spends most of his time protecting his own goal, as he's compiled just 16 points in 69 games this season.

Caps' Alzner Not Scoring Much

News: Karl Alzner has one goal and 11 assists through 59 games this season.
Analysis: The blueliner also checks in with 24 PIM and a minus-9 rating. He likely isn't a factor outside the deepest of fantasy leagues.

Rare Assist For Caps' Alzner In Loss To Canes

News: Karl Alzner posted an assist during Thursday's OT loss to Carolina, giving him eight points in 41 games so far this season.
Analysis: Karl Alzner has never been much of a scorer, however what he lacks in offense he more than makes up for in defensive awareness and durability, having not missed a game since becoming a full-time NHL player three seasons ago. He is second on the team in blocked shots with 69 and fourth in takeaways with 24, so he does boast modest fantasy value in leagues that count secondary non-scoring stat categories.

Caps' Alzner Staying Strong

News: Karl Alzner has played in all of the Capitals' games this season.
Analysis: Karl Alzner is not a source of goals or points, but has played in the vast majority of the Caps' games over the last three seasons. He's minus-2 so far this year with one assist. Alzner's career high in points is 17, back in 2011-2012.

Caps Bring Back Alzner

News: Karl Alzner signed a four-year contract with Washington on Wednesday.
Analysis: The deal is worth $2.8 million per year, which would project to $11.2 million total. While the contract shows that Washington values Karl Alzner's presence, his effect on the game isn't necessarily obvious to fantasy owners, because he has just 34 points in his last 212 games with the Capitals. Aside from the 2012 season, however, Alzner has generally been good in the plus/minus category. He finished the 2010 season with a plus-14 and 2011 with a plus-12, each figure occurring over 82 games.

Caps' Alzner Matches Goal Total

News: Karl Alzner scored his first goal in 87 games Tuesday against the Panthers, matching his single goal total from last season.
Analysis: Karl Alzner called the play beforehand, telling his offense "if the puck was in the circle, bump it back, if it's out of the circle, leave it." His plan worked and the 24-year old's shot found twine. Alzner had just two goals combined in his last two full seasons. Tuesday was a positive step forward but fantasy owners will want to limit their expectations until they see more from the defenseman.

Caps' Alzner Off To Hot Start

News: Karl Alzner has picked up three points through the Caps' first four games this season.
Analysis: He's not logging significant time on the power play, however, so there's little reason to think his production will remain at this level. Further, Karl Alzner doesn't shoot the puck much, as evidenced by his two shots on goal through four games and 64 over 82 contests last season. He plays on a good team and should help in the plus/minus department, but this doesn't look like a source of more than 15-20 points barring a significant role change.

Alzner Signs Two-Year Deal with Washington

News: Alzner signed to a two-year deal with the Capitals on Friday, the Caps' official site reports.
Analysis: Alzner was a restricted free agent. The deal will pay him $2.57 million over the two years. He'll be 23 years old going into next season. Alzner became a regular for the Caps last season, playing in all 82 games and posting two goals, 10 assists, a plus-14 rating, and 24 penalty minutes.

Caps And Alzner Will Look To Get A New Deal Done

News: Alzner is a restricted free agent, but Washington has provided no reason that they will not be working to reach an agreement with the young defenseman.
Analysis: Alzner is one of three Capitals that have yet to reach a new deal and when (and if) they do their number still has to go against their cap. Alzner should be re-signed, and from the Caps' standpoint they need this young kid going forward. Along with John Carlson, the two are a great duo, and losing Tyler Sloan and Scott Hannan, along with the uncertainty of Tom Poti, Alzner will be locked up soon. Fantasy wise Alzner has deferred to Carlson, but he has the skills to become relevant.

Caps' Alzner Surprises With Assist Trio

News: Alzner went plus-3 and picked up three assists in Wednesday's 7-6 win over the Ducks.
Analysis: He stepped up in a big way with fellow defenseman Mike Green sidelined by a head injury, though it had been a whole calendar month since Alzner last recorded a point. This leads us to to believe that his random outburst Wednesday was an aberration.

Caps' Alzner Able To Play Tuesday

News: Alzner, who left Sunday's game after crashing head first into the boards, was able to play Tuesday against the Flyers.
Analysis: Alzner picked up just over 20 minutes of play in the 3-2 OT loss, so it appears that his Sunday scare fortunately did not develop into a serious injury.

Caps' Alzner Okay After Hit Sunday

News: Alzner spoke to reporters after Sunday's game and said that he was not feeling any ill-effects from the Milan Michalek hit that sent him sailing head first into the boards.
Analysis: This is great news for a thin blue line and the young defenseman who gains more confidence with every game played. We will track his practice status this week to ensure nothing is lingering.

Caps' Alzner Leaves Sunday's Game

News: Alzner (undisclosed) left Sunday's game after getting cross checked by Milan Michalek head/shoulder first into the boards. Before his departure he had an assist and finished plus-2 in 19 plus minutes.
Analysis: Watching it live, it did not look good, but Alzner was able to skate off the ice with some help and went straight to the locker room. we're not sure on the severity, but this is not good news for a blue line already missing mainstay Tom Poti.

Caps' Alzner: Pointless In Nine

News: Alzner made his first appearance two years ago and the team felt they may have the next Mike Green. Fast forward to this season and through nine games he has zero points and a fellow back end teammate has dubbed the "Next Green" nickname and for good reason.
Analysis: Alzner showed a great deal of promise and has been solid in his first year as a full-time starter in D.C., but teammate John Carlson is the one who has really shined when it comes to showing promise. The difference is that Carlson has been delivering offensively since making his first appearance last season. As Alzner looks to break out of the offensive slump, it is wise to see some points scored before making any moves. He has the ability and skill but is not producing just yet.

Caps summon Alzner, Beagle

News: The Capitals have summoned D Karl Alzner and RW Jay Beagle from the AHL.
Analysis: Alzner, the fifth overall pick from 2007, put up 19 points in his second AHL season and might add to the 21 games he's spent with Washington this campaign. He remains an OK long-term keeper option for now, but he needs to start showing some offensive promise soon if he's to maintain his Fantasy value. Beagle isn't much of a prospect and has no Fantasy value at this time.

Alzner reassigned to minors

News: The Washington Capitals have assigned defensemen Karl Alzner and John Carlson and goaltender Michal Neuvirth to Hershey of the American Hockey League. All three players have split the season between the Capitals and Hershey. Washington general manager George McPhee announced the moves on Sunday.
Analysis: Alzner has five assists in 21 games with the Capitals. The former first-round pick is one of the Capitals' top prospects and a solid long-term Fantasy keeper. It's just that Washington doesn't have steady minutes for him yet, so he doesn't have a lot of seasonal league appeal.

Bourque, Alzner called up by Caps

News: The Washington Post reports that LW Chris Bourque and D Karl Alzner have been recalled from the AHL.
Analysis: Bourque was claimed off waivers from Pittsburgh earlier this season, and is having a nice AHL campaign with 38 points in 25 games. He's pretty much organizational depth though, and has no Fantasy value at this time. Alzner is a solid prospect and long-term keeper option, but is not worth adding in seasonal leagues yet.

Capitals bring back Alzner again

News: The Capitals have recalled D Karl Alzner from the AHL. He will be a healthy scratch for Tuesday's game at Boston, however.
Analysis: Alzner, the fifth overall pick in the 2007 draft, is a superb plus-23 in the AHL this season, but only has seven points so far. He remains best owned in just long-term Fantasy keeper formats for the time being.

Alzner optioned down to minors

News: The Capitals recalled Braden Holtby from Hershey of the AHL, and he will be available for Wednesday's game against the Ducks. To make room for Holtby, the Capitals assigned blueliner Karl Alzner to Hershey.
Analysis: Alzner has no goals and five assists in 18 games with Washington. Alzner is one of the Capitals' prized prospects, but they just don't have steady minutes for him on their blue line. Alzner is best owned in long-term Fantasy keeper formats.

News: The Capitals have recalled D Karl Alzner from the AHL.

Capitals recall Alzner, Wilson

News: The Capitals have recalled D Karl Alzner and C Kyle Wilson from the AHL.
Analysis: Alzner is a top prospect for the Capitals, but unless Washington gets hit by a rash of injuries, he isn't likely to get enough ice time to be worth picking up in seasonal leagues yet. Wilson has been an OK scorer in his AHL career so far, and isn't much of a prospect. Continue to ignore him in all leagues.

Caps have no room for Alzner

News: The Washington Post reports Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner was sent to Hershey of the AHL on Monday. Washington was 5-0-0 after Alzner was recalled from Hershey, but since he didn't have to clear waivers, he was the odd man out. "He did well, but we have nine defensemen," coach Bruce Boudreau said. "It's very difficult with nine defensemen who can play in the NHL -- to sit out three each game would create more of a problem in the end than be more of a competition. We had to alleviate it somewhere and right now, Karl is the one. He's going to have a long career. He's just sort of got to bide his time a little bit."
Analysis: There is no doubt Alzner is one of the Caps' top prospects and does have a bright future. He is just caught in a numbers game. Alzner remains a long-term Fantasy keeper until further notice.
