Hawks' Hjalmarsson Taking The Hits, Still Ticking

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson has taken 44 hits in the Stanley Cup Western Conference Finals heading into Game 7 against the Ducks, but said that he's just fine for Saturday night, ESPN Chicago reports.
Analysis: With Michal Rozsival out for the season with a fractured ankle, the Blackhawks have relied on their top four defensemen, Niklas Hjalmarsson, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook and Johnny Oduya who have taken 86 percent of the minutes in the first six games. "They hit hard, but they hit pretty clean," Hjalmarsson said. "It's just a matter of getting back up and focusing on the next shift." The Ducks are expected to try to exploit the heavy workload in Game 7.

Blackhawks' Hjalmarsson Gets Assist In Game 2

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson was credited with a secondary assist on Patrick Kane's third-period goal in Sunday's win over the Wild.
Analysis: After tallying a point in each of the Blackhawks' first two games of the postseason, Niklas Hjalmarsson was held off the score sheet for five consecutive games before getting the helper in Sunday's match. The 27-year-old provided only 19 points in 82 games during the regular season, so neither the Blackhawks nor fantasy owners should view as a viable source of offense.

Hawks' Hjalmarsson Nets Third Goal Of Season

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson potted his third goal of the season and finished with a plus-3 rating in Monday's 4-1 win over the Kings.
Analysis: Niklas Hjalmarsson suffered a hand injury in Friday's contest but was able to return to the ice without missing any game action, and has shown no lingering effects as the 27-year-old has recorded a point in both contests since sustaining the injury. The defenseman has just 18 points, but sports an impressive plus-24 rating on the year.

Blackhawks' Hjalmarsson (Hand) Playing Sunday

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson (hand) will play Sunday against the Jets, Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Analysis: Niklas Hjalmarsson suffered the hand injury Friday, but coach Joel Quenneville indicated he didn't believe it was serious. That appears to be the case, as he'll return to the lineup Sunday without missing any games.

Blackhawks' Hjalmarsson Suffers Hand Injury

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson suffered a hand injury in the third period of Friday's loss to the Blue Jackets, ESPN Chicago reports.
Analysis: Head coach Joel Quenneville did not think Niklas Hjalmarsson's injury was serious, so he will have a chance to play in the Blackhawks' next game Sunday against the Jets.

Hawks' Hjalmarsson Picks Up Assist

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson picked up an assist on Marian Hossa's empty-net tally in Saturday's win over the Sharks.
Analysis: Niklas Hjalmarsson got his regular defensive partner in Johnny Oduya back earlier in the week, enabling the duo to reprise their shutdown act over the season's final month. Neither player is typically much of a threat offensively, so don't expect Hjalmarsson to parlay Saturday's assist into something more. With 14 points in 68 games, Hjalmarsson as on track to fall well short of the career-best 26 points he provided in 2013-14.

Hawks' Hjalmarsson Scores In Win

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson scored his second goal of the season in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Penguins.
Analysis: Niklas Hjalmarsson carried a 10 game pointless drought into Sunday's contest, though it was just one of many lengthy cold spells for the blueliner this season. With just 12 points on the year, his fantasy value in conventional formats extends only to the deepest formats.

Hawks' Hjalmarsson Breaks Point Drought

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson scored his first point since Dec. 14 on Sunday, recording an assist in the Blackhawks' 5-4 win over the Stars.
Analysis: The blueliner has already noticed pointless skids of seven, eight and nine games this season, limiting his usefulness outside of specialty formats. He's worth stashing only for help in blocks and in stabilizing plus/minus and TOI.

Hawks' Hjalmarsson Plays Key Role In Win

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson scored his first goal of the season, was a plus-3, and logged a game-high 25:32 of ice time in Sunday's win over San Jose.
Analysis: A terrific outing for Niklas Hjalmarsson, who now has four points in 15 games on the season. His offensive totals are never spectacular, but he logs heavy minutes and is a great defensive player. Hjalmarsson could come close to surpassing the career-high four goals and 26 points he notched in 2013-14.

Hawks' Hjalmarsson Ends Cold Spell

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson tallied an assist, ending a streak of eight consecutive games without a point, in Tuesday's 5-0 win over the Canadiens.
Analysis: Niklas Hjalmarsson set a career high with 26 points last season, but hasn't had the same success so far this year with just a trio of assists and no goals. He's averaging more ice time than he ever has, so more points will likely come eventually but for now the production hasn't been there.

Hawks' Hjalmarsson Skips Practice, To Play Game 4

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson, who skated in Game 3 despite not being able to talk after taking a shot to his throat in Game 2, will skate in Game 4 against the Wild despite not practicing in the morning skate, CSN Chicago.com reports.
Analysis: Niklas Hjalmarsson has been off the ice for the past two days but Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said he's just resting. The defenseman has taken his shot-blocking lumps in the postseason, the most frightening when he caught a puck in the throat in Game 2 on Sunday. Hjalmarsson has been advised not to speak for some time but he has played through it.

Hawks' Hjalmarsson (Throat) To Play Game 3

News: Hjalmarrson, who took a shot to his throat in Game 2 on Sunday, will be able to skate on Tuesday in Game 3, ESPN Chicago reports.
Analysis: Niklas Hjalmarsson was hit by a shot during the first period of Game 2 on Sunday. He fell to the ice and remained there for a few minutes. He skated to the bench on his own, was examined by the Blackhawks' medical staff and returned to the ice for his next shift. He received medical clearance to play, but will not be able to talk for a couple of weeks. Hjalmarsson wore a protective neck guard during the Tuesday morning skate.

Chicago's Hjalmarsson Picks Up Two Assists Sunday

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson assisted on two goals in Sunday's Game 2 win over the Wild.
Analysis: Up until Sunday, it had been a relatively quiet postseason on the offensive end for Niklas Hjalmarsson, who tallied only one point in the previous seven games. Hjalmarsson also provided four blocked shots in the 4-1 victory.

Hawks' Hjalmarsson Blocks Six Shots In Game 5

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson continued his solid play in the Stanley Cup playoff series against the Blues with six blocked shots on Friday in the Hawks' 3-2 win in overtime in Game 5.
Analysis: With the game-high six shots, Hjalmarrson leads the NHL with 24 blocked shots in the playoffs. With Brent Seabrook out for the last three games because of a suspension, Niklas Hjalmarsson has been instrumental in propelling the Blackhawks to a three-game winning streak.

Blackhawks' Hjalmarsson Not Playing Saturday

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson will not play in Saturday's game against the Predators, Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Analysis: The 'Hawks are merely resting some key players in preparation for the playoffs. Also sitting Saturday are Duncan Keith, Marcus Kruger, and Michael Handzus.

Hawks' Hjalmarsson Playing Well

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson has four goals and 19 assists in 60 games at the Olympic break.
Analysis: His offensive numbers won't blow you away, but by many accounts Niklas Hjalmarsson is having his best season as a pro. His steady play has earned him and partner Johnny Oduya the top defensive assignments most nights, not to mention the fact that they'll remain paired together for Team Sweden in Sochi.

Blackhawks' Hjalmarsson Picks Up Two Assists

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson supplied two assists in Friday's 7-2 win over the Avalanche.
Analysis: The 26-year-old has been quieter than usual this month with just four points in 12 games, but the Blackhawks' league-best attack has gotten by just fine without his offensive contributions. He's still managed to post a plus-6 rating in December to boost his season total to plus-15.

Hawks' Hjalmarsson Assists Twice In Win

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson recorded two assists in Wednesday's win over the Flames.
Analysis: Niklas Hjalmarsson won't post huge numbers, but the Blackhawks blueliners like to jump into the play on offense, and rack up points as a result. With two goals and 10 assists through 24 games, Hjalmarsson certainly holds some fantasy value, especially when you add in his plus-8 rating.

Blackhawks' Hjalmarsson Suffers Injury In Practice

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson left Friday's practice with an upper-body injury, Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Analysis: Coach Joel Quenneville indicated that Niklas Hjalmarsson will still travel with the Blackhawks to Dallas and should be good to go for Saturday's game vs. the Stars. The Blackhawks will reassess his injury situation Saturday morning before announcing his status for the game.

Hawks' Hjalmarsson Scores First Goal Of Season

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson scored his first goal of the season in Saturday's 5-1 win over the Blackhawks.
Analysis: Niklas Hjalmarsson's first-period goal kicked off the scoring for the Blackhawks, who would add three more scores in the second period to create separation from the Jets. The defenseman has eight points in 14 games and is tied for the team lead with a plus-9 rating on the season.

Hawks' Hjalmarsson Notches Another Assist

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson notched his fifth assist of the season in the Blackhawks' 3-2 shootout loss to the Blues on Thursday night.
Analysis: Niklas Hjalmarsson could be on the road to a career year. His best season was in the 2009-10 season where he registered two goals and 15 assists. He already has five assists in seven games, and that's with the Blackhawks offense has been tepid at best to start the 2013-14 season.

Blackhawks' Hjalmarsson Off To Hot Start

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson notched an assist in a 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday night.
Analysis: Niklas Hjalmarsson has three assists already on the season and could be on the way a career season. His best was 2009-10, when he totaled just two goals and 15 assists. While he has three assists already, he continues to give up the puck -- three times on Saturday.

Chicago's Hjalmarsson: Two Helpers In Opener

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson notched a pair of assists and went plus-4 in the season-opening win against Washington on Tuesday.
Analysis: On the down side, he also was charged with a game-high three giveaways while tallying no takeaways -- not a good ratio. With just 56 points in 306 career games entering this season, Niklas Hjalmarsson isn't known for his offensive prowess, so don't get too worked up over the nice start.

Hjalmarsson Inks Five-Year Deal With Hawks

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson signed a five-year extension with the Blackhawks on Wednesday, ESPN Chicago reports.
Analysis: The deal is reportedly worth $4.1 million per year, and the Hawks now have most of their core players signed through the 2014-15 season. The main issue now is that both Kane and Toews are due big raises in the summer of 2015, as are Brandon Saad and Nick Leddy, although the latter two will both still be restricted free agents. It's probably too early to really worry about that at this point though, so for now just know that the Hawks basically look the same as last year at this point.

Blackhawks' Hjalmarsson Returns To Monday's Game

News: Niklas Hjalmarsson returned to Monday's Game 6 against the Bruins, Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: An unspecified injury sent Niklas Hjalmarsson to the locker room in the first period, but he was back to begin the second.
