Canes' Khudobin Pitches First Shutout Of Season

News: Anton Khudobin recorded his first shutout of the season Friday, stopping all 28 shots he faced in a win over Washington.
Analysis: A much-needed win for Anton Khudobin, who had lost four straight games, allowing a whopping 16 goals in that span. The 28-year-old is now 7-11-3 on the season with a .906 save percentage and 2.60 GAA. Cam Ward doesn't get many nights off, but when he does, Khudobin is a reliable backup option. Expect the team to turn to Ward Saturday against the Islanders.

Hurricanes Turn To Khudobin On Friday

News: Anton Khudobin is in line to start Friday's game against the Capitals.
Analysis: With Anton Khudobin slated to start Friday, expect the team to roll with Cam Ward (who the Hurricanes will honor with a special pre-game ceremony Friday in the wake of his 500th NHL game played) on Saturday against the Islanders.

'Canes To Start Khudobin On Saturday

News: Anton Khudobin will get the start between the pipes Saturday against the Devils, Michael Smith of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Anton Khudobin has a great matchup on Saturday, as New Jersey only averages 2.17 goals scored per game, good for second to last in the NHL. However, Khudobin has been shaky at best in limited action with the Canes, going 6-10-3 with a 2.71 GAA and a .903 save percentage through 21 games with Carolina this season.

Khudobin, 'Canes Fall To Isles

News: Anton Khudobin allowed three goals on 29 shots Tuesday in a 4-1 loss to the Islanders.
Analysis: It's the fourth straight unattractive stat line for Anton Khudobin, who's had plenty of chances to steal starting duties from Cam Ward, but has largely failed to take advantage. This was just a back-to-back opportunity for the Hurricanes' backup goalie.

'Canes To Start Khudobin On Tuesday

News: Anton Khudobin will be between the pipes for Tuesday's game against the Islanders, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: With Cam Ward manning the net in Monday's win over the Senators, Anton Khudobin steps in to give him a breather for the second game of a back-to-back. The team seems to have leaned Ward's way more frequently over the last few games, as Khudobin's performance hasn't warranted additional work. He's given up a total of 10 goals over his last two turns, and likely would have been bypassed for the start if the team wasn't playing on consecutive days. Don't count on Khudobin submitting strong numbers against one of the Eastern Conference's top teams.

Khudobin, 'Canes Toppled Saturday

News: Anton Khudobin wasn't especially sharp Saturday against the Wild, conceding five goals on 23 shot attempts.
Analysis: With a 5-3-2 record over their last 10 games, the Hurricanes have been trending upward after getting off to a woeful start to the season, but Anton Khudobin hasn't been a key contributor to their relative success of late. The netminder has given up five goals in each of his last two starts, and was pulled early in the outing prior to that after yielding two goals on three shots. Reaching the playoffs might be out of the question at this point, but expect the Hurricanes to lean more heavily on Cam Ward going forward as they continue on their climb back toward respectability.

'Canes To Start Khudobin On Saturday

News: Anton Khudobin will make the start in goal Saturday against the Wild.
Analysis: It will be Anton Khudobin's first career start against the team that selected him in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Khudobin appears to have surrendered the No. 1 job back over to Cam Ward, who had made the previous three starts for the Hurricanes, but a strong performance against the surging Wild would represent an impressive statement.

Carolina To Roll With Khudobin On Tuesday

News: Anton Khudobin will man the net for Tuesday's game against the Ducks, NHL.com's Curtis Zupke reports.
Analysis: Anton Khudobin looked as though he had surpassed Cam Ward on the depth chart over the past couple of weeks, but he suffered a misstep his last time out Friday versus the Blues, surrendering goals on two of the first three shots he faced before getting pulled. Ward was solid in relief in that game, but turned in a poor outing the very next night against the Rangers, further muddling the Canes' goalie picture. At this point, it seems coach Bill Peters might be content to ride the hot hand, so if Khudobin can somehow slow one of the league's best teams on their own home ice, it would surely be a boon to his chances at sticking as the Canes' top goalie.

Khudobin Stumbles Again For 'Canes

News: Anton Khudobin was tagged for five goals on 31 shots Tuesday in an overtime loss to Anaheim.
Analysis: That's the second straight rough outing for the Kazakh-Russian goalie, who's allowed seven goals on 34 shots in these last two games. Ugly. But he'd been absolutely on fire before, so perhaps Anton Khudobin's earned himself some forgiveness. Still, it seems likely we'll see Cam Ward get the cake assignment against Arizona on Thursday.

Canes' Khudobin Yanked In Loss

News: Anton Khudobin was pulled Friday against the Blues after giving up two goals on three shots.
Analysis: When we look back at Anton Khudobin's game log at the end of the season, that .333 save percentage is sure going to look strange. After he was pulled, Cam Ward put on a show in relief, stopping all 29 shots he faced to guide the Hurricanes to a shootout. While Khudobin had been playing lights out, perhaps this rough outing and strong performance from Ward will prove noteworthy. If Ward can keep up the strong play, the two goalies could go back to sharing a more balanced workload.

Canes' Khudobin Back In Net Thursday

News: Anton Khudobin is the likely starter for Friday's game against the Blues, the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Anton Khudobin is arguably one of the NHL's hottest netminders right now, having won all of his past six starts. He also owns a GAA of 1.46 over that stretch, along with a save percentage of .945. That said, the Canes are not one of the league's strongest teams offensively, so Khudobin's hot streak is likely to come to an end anytime now. Enjoy the ride while it lasts.

Another Win For Canes' Khudobin

News: Anton Khudobin turned away 28 of 30 shots Tuesday against Tampa Bay en route to his sixth consecutive winning decision.
Analysis: Beating the Lightning's high-powered offense is no small feat, but they're just the latest victims of Anton Khudobin's hot streak. Over his last seven starts, he's allowed a total of 10 goals and hasn't posted a save mark lower than .933. Cam who?

Hurricanes Likely To Start Khudobin Tuesday

News: Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer indicates that Anton Khudobin is likely to start Tuesday's game against the Lightning.
Analysis: We'll confirm the assignment closer to faceoff, but if he does get the nod, Anton Khudobin will be looking for his third straight win after notching victories in Carolina's final two games leading up to the NHL All-Star break.

Carolina's Khudobin Stops 34 In Win

News: Anton Khudobin turned away 34 of 35 shots in Monday's 4-1 win over the Maple Leafs.
Analysis: That's now five wins in five starts for Anton Khudobin after he started the season 0-8-2. He's also started three of the last four games as he's been outplaying Cam Ward of late, but it's hard to see enough value here to warrant regular starts in fantasy.

Carolina's Khudobin On Track To Start

News: Michael Smith of NHL.com indicates that Anton Khudobin appears on track to start Monday's game against Toronto.

Canes' Khudobin: 30 Saves In Win

News: Anton Khudobin made 30 saves in Saturday's 3-2 win over Ottawa.
Analysis: Wow -- he has four wins in his last four starts. Now, those games date back to Dec. 23, but it's clear that he's the better Canes' goalie right now. Cam Ward says he won't waive his no-trade, but the trade deadline is still a long way off. Anton Khudobin has talent, but as we've said before, he'd be hard-pressed to accumulate a lot of wins on a team this bad.

Hurricanes' Khudobin Stops Four Shots In Relief

News: Anton Khudobin stopped all four shots he faced in relief of Cam Ward in Friday's loss against Vancouver.
Analysis: It wasn't a busy night for Anton Khudobin, who is confirmed to start Saturday's game against Ottawa. Considering the way Ward has struggled of late, Khudobin, who has won his last three games, could take over the starting role in the event of a trade. If Ward stays put, Khudobin and his .909 save percentage could steal some starts from the veteran down the stretch. With a 3-8-2 record on the season, Khudobin could deliver some decent individual stats, but don't expect many wins. The Hurricanes are just that bad.

Hurricanes Turn To Khudobin On Saturday

News: Anton Khudobin is slated to start Saturday's game against the Senators, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Per the report, Cam Ward will draw the team's start in net Friday against the Canucks, while Anton Khudobin -- who has won his last three starts -- mans the Carolina net in the second of the team's upcoming back-to-back tilts.

Khudobin, 'Canes Win In Shootout

News: Anton Khudobin turned aside 28 of 30 shots and both shootout attempts in Tuesday's 3-2 victory over the Avs.
Analysis: That's three consecutive wins now for Anton Khudobin -- though they've been spread over three weeks. Still, he's given up just five goals in his last four starts, and it looks like he's rounding back into the form we expected from him as a guy who owns a career .925 save percentage (albeit in a fairly small sample). If he keeps playing like this, he could steal a good amount of second-half starts from the mediocre Cam Ward.

Hurricanes' Khudobin Will Start Tuesday

News: Anton Khudobin will start Tuesday against the Avalanche.
Analysis: Anton Khudobin was the first goalie off the ice following the Hurricanes' morning skate, which lines him up to start Tuesday night for just the second time since Dec. 23. He will square off against a Colorado squad that won five of the seven games it played prior to Tuesday.

Canes' Khudobin Not Starting Tuesday

News: Updating a previous report, Anton Khudobin will serve as the backup to Cam Ward for Tuesday's game against the Predators, Michael Smith of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: After Monday's practice, it was orginallly thought that Anton Khudobin might get the start versus the Preds, as coach Bill Peters indicated there would be no changes to the lineup that defeated the Bruins 2-1 Sunday night. However, despite Khudobin's solid play that game, it looks like Peters will revert back to Ward, who has started 27 of 39 games so far this season. In the meantime, Khudobin, who holds an 2-8-2 record, may have to wait until the Hurricanes' next set of back-to-back games (Jan. 16 and 17) before he gets his next start between the pipes.

Canes' Khudobin: Should Play Tuesday Vs. Bruins

News: Anton Khudobin is expected to make his second consecutive start Tuesday versus the Predators, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: While coach Bill Peters has not officially named his starting goaltender, he did say there would be no lineup changes from Sunday's 2-1 win over the Bruins, in which Anton Khudobin stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced. At this point, Khudobin is still technically the backup to Cam Ward, but if he continues his solid play, he could work himself into at least a timeshare situation with Ward. Monitor closely and be ready to take advantage if Khudobin continues to see a bigger share of the starting duties in Raleigh.

Canes' Khudobin Saves 19 In Win

News: Anton Khudobin saved 19 of the 20 shots he faced in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Bruins.
Analysis: Anton Khudobin has turned in three straight impressive performances, allowing just one goal in each. After starting the season winless in his first 10 starts the 28-year-old has now picked up consecutive wins, but his playing time will continue to be limited behind starter Cam Ward.

Canes' Khudobin To Start Sunday

News: Anton Khudobin will start in the crease against the Bruins, Michael Smith of the Hurricanes' official site reports.
Analysis: Anton Khudobin finally received his first victory of the season in his last start against the Devils, which came before the holiday break. He will get another chance in net Sunday against the Bruins, and will look to start a winning streak with a record now standing at 1-8-2, a 2.71 GAA, and a .903 save percentage.
