Hurricanes' Khudobin Flops Friday

News: Anton Khudobin surrendered five goals on 28 shots faced in Friday's 6-3 loss to Edmonton.
Analysis: Just when Anton Khudobin seemed poised to supplant Cam Ward as the Hurricanes' No. 1 goalie once and for all, he turned in a stinker of a performance to cast further doubt on the team's netminding situation. After a respectable first two periods, Khudobin fell apart in the final 20 minutes, turning a 2-2 game into a laugher. The loss dropped Khudobin to 0-3-1 on the season and gave the winless Hurricanes more questions than answers.

Carolina's Khudobin To Start Friday

News: Anton Khudobin will be in the crease Friday against the Oilers.
Analysis: Coach Bill Peters will unsurprisingly turn the net over to Anton Khudobin on the heels of another implosion by Cam Ward, who yielded five goals to Calgary on Thursday. After supplying a pair of ugly starts to begin the season, Khudobin has performed better his last two times out, though he has yet to secure his first victory. A match against a similarly struggling Edmonton squad will offer a good opportunity for Khudobin to finally get a tally in the win column.

Hurricanes' Khudobin Takes Third Straight Loss

News: Anton Khudobin lost for the third consecutive time to open the season Tuesday, giving up three goals on 26 shots.
Analysis: At least one of the losses was in overtime -- that helps a little, right? Despite the losing efforts, Anton Khudobin hasn't been bad to open the year; the shorthanded Hurricanes have simply not been playing very well. Still, this could open the door for another Cam Ward start Thursday in Calgary.

Hurricanes' Khudobin To Start Tuesday

News: Anton Khudobin will be between the pipes for Tuesday's game against the Jets.
Analysis: Anton Khudobin and Cam Ward alternated starts over the Hurricanes' first four games, but Khudobin will start for the second game in a row after giving up just one goal his last time out. He will take on a Winnipeg team that has lit the lamp just two times over its last four games after scoring six goals in its season opener.

Hurricanes' Khudobin Stuck With Shootout Loss

News: Anton Khudobin was impressive while stopping 33 of 34 in regulation against the Rangers on Thursday, but he allowed the only goal of the shootout to end up with the loss.
Analysis: While it's still another loss for the Hurricanes, this easily represents the best start so far this season by a Carolina netminder. Cam Ward appears to be in serious decline and Anton Khudobin is coming off a .926 save mark last season, so the Russian netminder should end up drawing the majority of the starts.

Carolina's Khudobin Slated To Start Thursday

News: Anton Khudobin is set to make the start in goal Thursday against the Rangers, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Coach Bill Peters will stick with his pattern of alternating the starts between Anton Khudobin and Cam Ward until one of the goalies catches fire, but neither looks especially close to a breakthrough. After a rough preseason, Khudobin gave up four goals on 31 shots in his first start of the season Saturday against the Islanders. Things probably won't come much easier for him against the Rangers, especially with the Hurricanes playing without their top two forwards (Eric Staal and Jeff Skinner) and top defenseman (Andrej Sekera).

Canes' Khudobin Fails To Impress In Defeat

News: Anton Khudobin surrendered four goals on 31 shots in Saturday's loss to the Islanders.
Analysis: It was a rather tepid showing from Anton Khudobin, who squandered a major opportunity to create some space from Cam Ward in the competition for the top goalie job. The final goal allowed by Khudobin proved especially costly, as he allowed the Islanders' Josh Bailey to put the puck past him with four seconds remaining in the second period, which amounted to the game-winning tally. The poor performances offered by both Khudobin and Ward over the weekend make it anyone's guess as to who may get the nod for Tuesday's home tilt with the Sabres.

Canes Turn To Khudobin In Rematch With Isles

News: Anton Khudobin will draw the start in the net Saturday against the Islanders.
Analysis: The Hurricanes were always likely to split the back-to-back starts against the Islanders between Anton Khudobin and Cam Ward while the No. 1 goalie gig remained up for grabs, but the decision to go with Khudobin was made even easier after Ward surrendered five goals on just 26 shots Friday night. Khudobin yielded five goals of his own in his final start of the preseason last weekend, but if he can tighten things up in his first turn of the regular season, he could create some separation from Ward in their job battle. Khudobin was unquestionably the superior netminder last season, going 19-14-1 with a 2.30 GAA and .926 save percentage over his 36 appearances.

Canes' Khudobin Allows Five In Loss

News: Anton Khudobin allowed five goals on 38 shots in Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Capitals.
Analysis: Anton Khudobin entered preseason play in a competition with Cam Ward for the No. 1 spot on the depth chart in net, but appears to have lost some ground. While Ward will likely begin the year as the starting goaltender, Khudobin could still work his way into the everyday role at some point. The five goals are clearly not a positive, but he did come away with 33 saves.

Canes' Khudobin To Start Preseason Game Tuesday

News: Anton Khudobin will start the Canes' second preseason game Tuesday against the Sabres, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: The Canes lost 4-3 to the Blue Jackets on Sunday with Cam Ward starting in net, however Ward did receive a positive review from new head coach Bill Peters. Given Ward's hefty contract, along with the length of his tenure in Raleigh, Anton Khudobin will likely have to stand on his head in the preseason to have a real shot at opening the season as the team's No. 1 netminder.

Canes' Khudobin To Challenge For No. 1 Goalie Job

News: Anton Khudobin will be challenged by a healthy Cam Ward for the Hurricanes' top goaltending job this season, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Despite posting superior numbers last season (including the fifth-best save percentage in the NHL) and surpassing Ward as the Canes' everyday starter, Anton Khudobin will apparently still start off in at least a time-share with Ward for the top job this season. However, new Canes coach Bill Peters will no doubt be quick to hand over the reins to the first guy to go on a hot streak, and if last season was any indication, don't be surprised if that guy turns out to be Khudobin. We're betting that by the second half of the season, Khudobin is the No. 1 goalie in Raleigh. For fantasy purposes however, it's better to own both goaltenders just to be safe.

Hurricanes' Khudobin Stops 39 In Win

News: Anton Khudobin made 39 saves on 44 shots in a shootout win over the Flyers on Sunday.
Analysis: Anton Khudobin finished the year with the fifth best save percentage in the NHL. It would be surprising if he isn't Carolina's starting goalie next season.

Canes Start Khudobin On Sunday

News: Anton Khudobin will be between the pipes for the Canes in their season finale on Sunday, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Anton Khudobin will look to finish the season for the Hurricanes on a strong note after allowing five goals on just 21 shots on Thursday. He will face a Flyers team that is resting multiple starters for the playoffs.

Canes' Khudobin Lit Up In Loss

News: Anton Khudobin allowed five goals on just 21 shots in Thursday's loss to Washington.
Analysis: Despite Alex Ovechkin taking just one shot on goal and recording no points, Anton Khudobin was beaten a season-high five times by a Capitals team that, like Carolina, is out of contention. Still, the Russian goalie gets a mulligan on this one in light of this year's generally terrific netminding.

Canes' Khudobin Starting Thursday

News: Anton Khudobin will get the start in net Thursday against the Capitals, Michael Smith of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: With Cam Ward questionable for Thursday's game with an upper body injury, it comes as no surprise that Anton Khudobin will get the nod between the pipes. Khudobin is 18-13-1 on the season with a .931 save percentage and a 2.14 GAA.

Canes' Khudobin In Line To Start Thursday

News: Anton Khudobin is expected to start in net Thursday against the Capitals, Michael Smith of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: With Cam Ward's sporadic play of late, Anton Khudobin has gotten the opportunity to take over the majority of the starts for the Canes. He's 3-1-1 in his last five appearances, and has posted a save percentage over .900 in each of those appearances, including a 35-save shutout of the Panthers on March 27.

Carolina's Khudobin Drops Decision Saturday

News: Anton Khudobin gave up only two goals on 22 shots on Saturday, but was unable to come away with the win over the Devils.
Analysis: The loss just about eliminates the Hurricanes from playoff contention, with New Jersey one of several teams in better position to claim a Wild Card spot. Anton Khudobin has certainly done his best of late to postpone Carolina's elimination, allowing a total of four goals over his last three outings.

Canes' Khudobin Starting Versus Devils

News: Anton Khudobin will start Saturday's game against the Devils.
Analysis: Anton Khudobin's on a roll right now, and he's generally having an excellent season. Coming off consecutive 4-1 victories over contenders, the Russian netminder will face a weak New Jersey team that's currently crippled by injuries.

Khudobin Stops 33 As 'Canes Down Stars

News: Anton Khudobin made 33 saves on 34 shots in Thursday's 4-1 win over Dallas.
Analysis: Anton Khudobin continues to do nothing but put up great stats nearly every time he gets a start. He's only posted a save percentage under .900 three times in his last 19 appearances.

Canes' Khudobin To Start Thursday

News: Anton Khudobin was the first goalie off the ice at morning skate and looks primed to start Thursday against the Stars, Chantel McCabe of FOX Sports Carolinas reports.
Analysis: After winning against a top-notch Penguins squad his last time out Tuesday, Anton Khudobin will face another tough adversary in the Stars, winners of three straight games. Kari Lehtonen will man the net opposite Khudobin.

Hurricanes' Khudobin Likely Thursday Starter

News: Anton Khudobin is likely to start Thursday's game against the Stars, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Assuming he draws the assignment, Anton Khudobin will take aim at a Dallas squad that has won three straight games, outscoring its opponents by a 16-5 mark in that span.

Khudobin, 'Canes Freeze Penguins

News: Anton Khudobin stopped 30 of 31 shots in Tuesday's 4-1 victory over Pittsburgh.
Analysis: A terrific outing for Anton Khudobin, who needed a win in the worst way after posting an ugly 4-8-1 record over February and March despite a sparkling .930 save percentage. Keep a close eye on him in next year's drafts -- there may be a neat profit to be turned on Khudobin, especially if Cam Ward is shipped out as expected.

Hurricanes To Start Khudobin On Tuesday

News: Anton Khudobin will man the net Tuesday against the Penguins, Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: After Cam Ward received the turn in the net Monday against Ottawa, Anton Khudobin will slot back in for the second game of the back-to-back. Khudobin has lost six of his last eight games, but the blame doesn't lay entirely with him, as he allowed more than three goals on only one occasion during that stretch.

Canes' Khudobin: 29 Saves In OT Loss

News: Anton Khudobin made 29 saves in Saturday's 3-2 OT loss to Columbus.

Canes Start Khudobin On Saturday

News: Anton Khudobin will be between the pipes when the Hurricanes face the Blue Jackets on Saturday, NHL.com's Michael Smith reports.
Analysis: Though he's lost three of his last five starts, Anton Khudobin has given up just eight goals in that span. He's sporting a very impressive 2.20 GAA and .929 save percentage over 30 games this season.
