Caps' Niskanen Collects Trio Of Assists

News: Matt Niskanen picked up three assists in Friday's win over the Islanders.
Analysis: Matt Niskanen has heated up lately, tallying a goal and five points in his last three games. The 27-year-old now has 10 points (one goal) in 22 games this season, to go with a minus-2 rating. Niskanen has been very streaky this season, but considering he is playing alongside Alex Ovechkin on the top power-play unit, it's possible the former Penguin hits 40 points in his first campaign with Washington.

Caps' Niskanen Finally Gets First Goal Of Season

News: Matt Niskanen scored his first goal of the season in Saturday's loss to Buffalo. It took him 20 games to notch the goal.
Analysis: The Caps thought they were getting so much more when they inked him this summer, especially after last year's 10-goal, 46-point effort. So far, he has just six points and cannot be trusted to deliver fantasy value ... at least at this point.

Caps' Niskanen Dishes Out Two Assists

News: Matt Niskanen picked up a pair of assists in the second period of Friday's 3-2 win over Chicago.
Analysis: The helpers snapped a five-game pointless streak for Matt Niskanen, who has now posted five points in 13 games with his new club. Perhaps most alarming are his lack of shots on goal (13) after averaging two per game (162 in 81) with the Penguins last year. Furthermore, Mike Green and John Carlson are the top offensive weapons on Washington's blue line, so it's starting to look like "Nisky" could end up as a significant fantasy bust this season after a 46-point, plus-33 breakout last year.

Caps' Niskanen Hands Out Two Helpers

News: Matt Niskanen picked up his first points of the year Thursday against the Devils, notching a pair of assists.
Analysis: After a career year of 10 goals and 46 points for the rival Penguins last year, Matt Niskanen signed with Washington and delivered a quiet first three games, so it's good to see him get in on the action a little more.

Caps' Niskanen Tallies Assist Friday

News: Matt Niskanen got an assist and logged over 25 minutes of ice-time in the Capitals' 5-4 OT win over the Bruins on Friday.
Analysis: Signed to a massive seven year contract earlier this summer, Matt Niskanen has displayed the kind of poise and puck-moving skills that made him such a highly sought after commodity in free agency. Niskanen has been a solid player thus far in preseason, and looks to be a fixture in the team's top defensive pairings. However, his fantasy upside hinges significantly on his role with the power-play, and it is still not clear whether he will spend significant time with Alex Ovechkin on the team's top unit. Given that he is going in the top-10 amongst defensemen after posting career numbers last season, Niskanen has the potential to have a great season, but carries some risk at this stage of preseason.

Caps Sign Niskanen To Seven-Year Deal

News: Matt Niskanen signed a seven-year, $40.25 million contract with the Capitals on Tuesday.
Analysis: Matt Niskanen, one of the top free agents available, joins fellow ex-Penguin Brooks Orpik in Washington in a massive overhaul of the Caps' blue line. The defenseman finished last season with 10 goals and 46 points, and was an inspired performer on a Penguins team that was decimated by injuries to the blue line last season. While it's possible that Niskanen has cashed in on a career year feeding pucks to the likes of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin on the Pittsburgh power play, he moves to a Caps organization with no shortage of firepower on the man advantage. While Niskanen may not repeat last season's performance, he should be a solid fantasy contributor beyond this season if he can displace Mike Green or John Carlson on the top power-play unit. Keep an eye on him.

Isles Have Been In Touch With Niskanen

News: The Islanders have been in touch with Matt Niskanen, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple.
Analysis: Matt Niskanen had a career season with 10 goals and 36 assists in 81 games for the Penguins this past year and could be one of the top defensemen available on the open market. The problem for the Isles is that these kind of players have generally chosen to play elsewhere rather on Long Island over the past few years.

Pens' Niskanen Producing From The Blue Line

News: Matt Niskanen's two-assist night in Monday's clinching Game 6 brought his totals to two goals and six assists in the playoffs.
Analysis: His ice time (18:16) was nearly seven minutes less than Kris Letang (25:04) and 10 less than Paul Martin (27:30), but that didn't stop Matt Niskanen from producing. He leads all Pittsburgh players with six power-play points.

Pens' Niskanen Grabs Goal, Assist In Win

News: Matt Niskanen recorded a goal and an assist Wednesday against the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: Matt Niskanen picked up both his points on the man advantage, and considering he now has six points in his last four games, expect the blueliner to be a productive fantasy player this postseason. Niskanen saw more time on the power play than any other Pittsburgh blueliner (although his total was just 2:02 TOI).

Pens' Niskanen Out Of Top Four Tuesday

News: Matt Niskanen skated on Pittsburgh's third-group pairing with Olli Maatta on Tuesday and manned the left point of the team's second power-play unit, the Penguins' website reports.
Analysis: The return of Kris Letang and Paul Martin to the lineup don't do much to help Matt Niskanen and could, in fact, reduce his playing time and fantasy production. The right-handed shooting defender set a number of career marks in 2013-14, but he might have to wait for injuries to strike before taking a more prominent spot on the blue line.

Less Is More For Pens' Niskanen

News: Matt Niskanen tallied a pair of assists Wednesday -- including one on the power play, in a 4-3 victory over Detroit.
Analysis: His ice time was down to a more reasonable 21:29 TOI, which was less than fellow defensemen Paul Martin, Brooks Orpik or Kris Letang. He retained his spot on the top power-play unit, however, and the reduced even-strength time could help his production for the last two regular-season games. His four minutes of power-play time was more than any other Penguins player, including Sidney Crosby (3:30 TOI) and Paul Martin (3:30 TOI).

Pens' Banking On Niskanen To Eat Minutes

News: Matt Niskanen went pointless despite leading Pittsburgh with 27:55 TOI against Detroit on Thursday, including 7:40 on the power play.
Analysis: The Penguins are over-extending Matt Niskanen out of necessity with power-play regulars, Paul Martin and Kris Letang, sidelined. He still has a goal and three points in his last eight, but his numbers might actually increase when Martin (and possibly Letang) return. Martin could return in a couple weeks if he doesn't suffer any setbacks from a broken hand.

Pens' Niskanen Scores Yet Again Sunday

News: Matt Niskanen netted his career-high 10th goal in Sunday's 4-3 loss to Philadelphia.
Analysis: He saw 27:11 TOI, four-plus minutes more than the next closest Pittsburgh defenseman (Olli Maatta, 23:03 TOI). Matt Niskanen, an impending free agent, may be pricing himself out of Pittsburgh with his fine breakout campaign.

Nasty Nisky Continues to Hurt Pens' Opponents

News: Matt Niskanen broke a three-game pointless streak Tuesday, tallying an assist while finishing plus-1 against Washington.
Analysis: The defender, who will become an unrestricted free agent at season's end, now has a career-high 38 points (9G, 29A) in 65 games. He also leads the NHL with a plus-32 rating.

Niskanen Scores Twice For Pens

News: Matt Niskanen scored one goal at even strength and another on the power play in Tuesday's win over the Predators.
Analysis: Matt Niskanen's fantasy owners have to be thrilled with what he's been doing since Kris Letang and Paul Martin went down. He's got five points in his last five games and is skating major minutes -- he led the Pens in ice time Tuesday.

Niskanen Takes Over Blue Line For Pens

News: Matt Niskanen led all Penguins players with 27:27 TOI against the Canadiens on Thursday, tallying a power-play assist.
Analysis: The team will lean heavily on Matt Niskanen with both Kris Letang (stroke) and Paul Martin (hand) sidelined for at least a month. Nisky ranks 11th among defensemen with 35 points (7G, 28A) and could easily move up in those rankings before season's end.

Pens' Niskanen In The Lineup Wednesday

News: Matt Niskanen (undisclosed) will play Wednesday against the Sabres.
Analysis: Matt Niskanen was absent from the morning skate for reasons that remain unclear, but he'll be back in the fold Wednesday. He carries a robust plus-27 rating into the contest and is coming off a huge January in which he delivered 13 points in 12 games.

Pens' Niskanen Could Sit Wednesday

News: Matt Niskanen (undisclosed) is questionable to play Wednesday night against the Sabres, Josh Yohe of the Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: Along with Chris Kunitz, Matt Niskanen also missed Wednesday's morning skate with an undisclosed injury, and now it appears he will also be a game-time decision for Wednesday's game. Since we don't know anything about the nature of Niskanen's injury, it would be difficult to try to predict whether he'll play or not at this point.

Pens' Niskanen Misses Wednesday Skate

News: Matt Niskanen did not take part in Wednesday's game-day skate, according to Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Analysis: Matt Niskanen, who has five goals and 32 points, is the only Pittsburgh blueliner to play in all of the team's first 56 games. He did have one of his worst showings of the season Monday. Whether that's because he's nursing an injury remains to be seen.

Pens' Niskanen With More Points Thursday

News: Matt Niskanen tallied two assists and compiled a plus-3 rating Thursday against the Islanders.
Analysis: He accomplished those numbers despite seeing only 15:21 TOI -- the second-lowest amount of time among Pittsburgh defensemen. Matt Niskanen now has 17 points in 16 games as his fantasy owners sit back and enjoy the ride.

Pens' Niskanen Collects Two More Points

News: Matt Niskanen chipped in with two helpers in Pittsburgh's win Wednesday, giving the defender 15 points in his last 15 games.
Analysis: Matt Niskanen is playing over his head right now, but fantasy owners are loving it. He leads the NHL with a plus-26 rating and hasn't been slowed by the returns of fellow blueliners, Kris Letang and Paul Martin.

Niskanen Scores Lone Penguin Goal Monday

News: Matt Niskanen's seventh goal Monday gives him 13 points in his last 14 games.
Analysis: The also defenseman entered action Monday with an NHL-best plus-26 rating. Matt Niskanen will be an unrestricted free agent following 2013-14, so he's picking a pretty good time for a career season.

Pens' Niskanen Sets Record Saturday

News: Matt Niskanen netted his fifth game-winning goal Saturday, setting a new franchise record among Pittsburgh defensemen.
Analysis: He has 10 points, including five goals and five assists, in the last 12 games. Matt Niskanen continues to see second-unit power play time, though that could change whenever Paul Martin returns from injury.

Niskanen Scores In Pittsburgh Loss

News: Matt Niskanen scored the Penguins' only goal in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to New Jersey, giving him a point in each of the last two games.
Analysis: Matt Niskanen again stands to benefit while Paul Martin and Kris Letang are out of the lineup, and he has three points over the last five games. His value is tied to the health of his teammates, but while they're on the shelf, Niskanen makes for a solid fantasy play.
