Caps' Niskanen Sets Up Goal In Loss

News: Matt Niskanen set up Curtis Glencross' third-period goal in Friday's 3-2 defeat to the Rangers.
Analysis: Matt Niskanen hasn't quite thrived offensively with the Caps to the extent he did in 2013-14 with the Penguins, but as Friday's performance showed, he still has some respectable two-way abilities. The helper gave him his fourth point (all assists) in 12 postseason contests.

Caps' Niskanen Grabs Assist Thursday

News: Matt Niskanen recorded an assist during Washington's 5-1 rout of the Islanders in Thursday's Game 5.
Analysis: The helper gives the Minnesota native three assists in the first five games of the series. Though inconsistent this season, Matt Niskanen has looked more comfortable offensively with the Capitals since March, and is tied with defense partner Karl Alzner in playoff scoring among Capitals defensemen, ahead of offensive stalwarts John Carlson and Mike Green. His production is an encouraging sign, and he should be on your radar for next season's draft.

Caps' Niskanen Collects Two Assists In Game 2 Win

News: Matt Niskanen picked up a pair of helpers in Friday's Game 2 win over the Islanders.
Analysis: A great bounce-back effort for Matt Niskanen, who was an awful minus-4 in the Game 1 loss. The 28-year-old logged 21:47 of ice time Friday, and after notching 31 points in the regular season, expect him to continue to contribute steady offensive production from the back-end.

Caps' Niskanen Continues Streak With Assist

News: Matt Niskanen had an assist and 21:27 of ice time in Washington's 4-2 win over Carolina on Tuesday.
Analysis: The helper gives Matt Niskanen five points (all assists) in his last four games. Signed to a lucrative long-term contract this summer, the 27-year-old Minnesotan has struggled to produce the offensive numbers expected of him this season, but had his best month as a Capital during March, finishing with nine assists in 14 games. Niskanen is heating up at the right time, so if by chance he's still available in your league, grab him immediately.

Caps' Niskanen Stays Hot With Assist Saturday

News: Matt Niskanen grabbed another assist in Washington's 4-3 loss to the Predators on Saturday.
Analysis: While his offensive game hasn't been up to the level expected after signing a lucrative, long-term deal with the Capitals over the summer, Matt Niskanen is having his best stretch offensively as a Capital, with six assists in his last five games. While he's been prone to inconsistency this season, he's worth owning in all leagues as long as he's on this hot streak, as it's all hands on deck for a Capitals team now struggling to hold on to a playoff berth.

Niskanen Buries OT Winner For Caps

News: Matt Niskanen assisted on Karl Alzner's game-opening goal and then finished the scoring with the game-winner in overtime Thursday against New Jersey.
Analysis: Matt Niskanen's on a hot little stretch of play here, with five points in his last four games, and he and Alzner carried the offense Thursday. Still, Niskanen remains a full 20 points short of last year's 46-point output with Pittsburgh, and there are just eight games left in the season.

Caps' Niskanen Grabs Two Points

News: Matt Niskanen dished out a pair of power-play assists in Monday's 4-3 win over the Sabres.
Analysis: Matt Niskanen was on the ice for 26:00 in the win, marking the fourth consecutive game he's logged at least 25:00 worth of ice time. The bump in minutes hadn't led to any production on the score sheet until Monday's multi-point effort -- which was just the second time in the past 11 games he's recorded a point. The 28-year-old is now just halfway to last season's 46-point output, but he could be worth a look in deeper leagues if he can continue to produce on the power-play.

Caps' Niskanen To Play With Top Power Play Unit

News: Matt Niskanen will take the place of Mike Green (upper-body) on the Capitals' top power play unit for Wednesday's crucial match against the Rangers, Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: With Green on the mend, Matt Niskanen will get first crack at the coveted point position opposite Hart Trophy candidate Alex Ovechkin on the Capitals' vaunted top power play unit. Green's injury isn't believed to be serious, but given his injury history, Niskanen figures to get a short term boost in value as long as Green remains out of the lineup if he can keep the Capitals' power play running smoothly. While he hasn't made the most of his earlier chances at this role, he's got enough short-term value where he's worth adding if available in your league.

Caps' Niskanen Picks Up Assist

News: Matt Niskanen collected an assist in Thursday's win over the Jets.
Analysis: Matt Niskanen has only two points (both assists) over his last 12 games. He's had a few other scoring droughts of a similar extent this season, which has qualified as a deep disappointment after he ranked among the top blueliners with 46 points a season earlier. It hasn't helped matters that he's posted a 2.5 shooting percentage this year, the second-lowest rate of his career.

Caps' Niskanen Contributes Two Helpers

News: Matt Niskanen picked up two assists and went plus-2 with two PIM in Tuesday's loss to Columbus.
Analysis: He's been finding the scoresheet with modest regularity recently, notching four helpers over the last five games. That's what amounts to a hot streak this year for Matt Niskanen, who's seen his offensive production dry up dramatically on the heels of last year's 10-goal, 46-point explosion.

Caps' Niskanen (Lower Body) Likely To Play Wed.

News: Matt Niskanen was on the ice for pregame warmups in advance of Wednesday's matchup with the Leafs, Mike Vogel of WashingtonCaps.com reports.
Analysis: Matt Niskanen was able to take part in the team's morning skate, but he had hardly been a lock to play Wednesday while dealing with a lower body injury. His participation in pregame warmups suggests he will, in fact, suit up.

Caps' Niskanen A Game-Time Decision Wednesday

News: Updating a previous report, Matt Niskanen is now being considered a game-time decision for Wednesday's game against the Maple Leafs, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: It was assumed Matt Niskanen would play after he was able to take part in the team's morning skate, but the blueliner backtracked a bit, indicating after the session that he didn't know if his injury would allow him to suit up. The Capitals will likely wait and see how he performs during pregame warmups before reaching a verdict on his status.

Caps' Niskanen (Lower Body) On Track To Play

News: Matt Niskanen (lower body) is on track to play Wednesday against the Maple Leafs.
Analysis: Matt Niskanen missed Monday's practice with the injury, but it doesn't sound like it was any kind of serious concern. The blueliner has been durable this season in suiting up for all 38 of the Capitals' games, but he hasn't provided the point production the team was banking on him after inking a seven-year deal this summer.

Caps' Niskanen Dealing With Lower-Body Injury

News: Matt Niskanen is day-to-day with a lower-body injury, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Matt Niskanen's injury likely occurred during Sunday's 4-3 victory over the Panthers on Sunday, though it's a bit unclear when it happened. He didn't practice with the team Monday, so his status for Wednesday's game against the Maple Leafs.

Caps' Niskanen Collects Trio Of Assists

News: Matt Niskanen picked up three assists in Friday's win over the Islanders.
Analysis: Matt Niskanen has heated up lately, tallying a goal and five points in his last three games. The 27-year-old now has 10 points (one goal) in 22 games this season, to go with a minus-2 rating. Niskanen has been very streaky this season, but considering he is playing alongside Alex Ovechkin on the top power-play unit, it's possible the former Penguin hits 40 points in his first campaign with Washington.

Caps' Niskanen Finally Gets First Goal Of Season

News: Matt Niskanen scored his first goal of the season in Saturday's loss to Buffalo. It took him 20 games to notch the goal.
Analysis: The Caps thought they were getting so much more when they inked him this summer, especially after last year's 10-goal, 46-point effort. So far, he has just six points and cannot be trusted to deliver fantasy value ... at least at this point.

Caps' Niskanen Dishes Out Two Assists

News: Matt Niskanen picked up a pair of assists in the second period of Friday's 3-2 win over Chicago.
Analysis: The helpers snapped a five-game pointless streak for Matt Niskanen, who has now posted five points in 13 games with his new club. Perhaps most alarming are his lack of shots on goal (13) after averaging two per game (162 in 81) with the Penguins last year. Furthermore, Mike Green and John Carlson are the top offensive weapons on Washington's blue line, so it's starting to look like "Nisky" could end up as a significant fantasy bust this season after a 46-point, plus-33 breakout last year.

Caps' Niskanen Hands Out Two Helpers

News: Matt Niskanen picked up his first points of the year Thursday against the Devils, notching a pair of assists.
Analysis: After a career year of 10 goals and 46 points for the rival Penguins last year, Matt Niskanen signed with Washington and delivered a quiet first three games, so it's good to see him get in on the action a little more.

Caps' Niskanen Tallies Assist Friday

News: Matt Niskanen got an assist and logged over 25 minutes of ice-time in the Capitals' 5-4 OT win over the Bruins on Friday.
Analysis: Signed to a massive seven year contract earlier this summer, Matt Niskanen has displayed the kind of poise and puck-moving skills that made him such a highly sought after commodity in free agency. Niskanen has been a solid player thus far in preseason, and looks to be a fixture in the team's top defensive pairings. However, his fantasy upside hinges significantly on his role with the power-play, and it is still not clear whether he will spend significant time with Alex Ovechkin on the team's top unit. Given that he is going in the top-10 amongst defensemen after posting career numbers last season, Niskanen has the potential to have a great season, but carries some risk at this stage of preseason.

Caps Sign Niskanen To Seven-Year Deal

News: Matt Niskanen signed a seven-year, $40.25 million contract with the Capitals on Tuesday.
Analysis: Matt Niskanen, one of the top free agents available, joins fellow ex-Penguin Brooks Orpik in Washington in a massive overhaul of the Caps' blue line. The defenseman finished last season with 10 goals and 46 points, and was an inspired performer on a Penguins team that was decimated by injuries to the blue line last season. While it's possible that Niskanen has cashed in on a career year feeding pucks to the likes of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin on the Pittsburgh power play, he moves to a Caps organization with no shortage of firepower on the man advantage. While Niskanen may not repeat last season's performance, he should be a solid fantasy contributor beyond this season if he can displace Mike Green or John Carlson on the top power-play unit. Keep an eye on him.

Isles Have Been In Touch With Niskanen

News: The Islanders have been in touch with Matt Niskanen, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple.
Analysis: Matt Niskanen had a career season with 10 goals and 36 assists in 81 games for the Penguins this past year and could be one of the top defensemen available on the open market. The problem for the Isles is that these kind of players have generally chosen to play elsewhere rather on Long Island over the past few years.

Pens' Niskanen Producing From The Blue Line

News: Matt Niskanen's two-assist night in Monday's clinching Game 6 brought his totals to two goals and six assists in the playoffs.
Analysis: His ice time (18:16) was nearly seven minutes less than Kris Letang (25:04) and 10 less than Paul Martin (27:30), but that didn't stop Matt Niskanen from producing. He leads all Pittsburgh players with six power-play points.

Pens' Niskanen Grabs Goal, Assist In Win

News: Matt Niskanen recorded a goal and an assist Wednesday against the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: Matt Niskanen picked up both his points on the man advantage, and considering he now has six points in his last four games, expect the blueliner to be a productive fantasy player this postseason. Niskanen saw more time on the power play than any other Pittsburgh blueliner (although his total was just 2:02 TOI).

Pens' Niskanen Out Of Top Four Tuesday

News: Matt Niskanen skated on Pittsburgh's third-group pairing with Olli Maatta on Tuesday and manned the left point of the team's second power-play unit, the Penguins' website reports.
Analysis: The return of Kris Letang and Paul Martin to the lineup don't do much to help Matt Niskanen and could, in fact, reduce his playing time and fantasy production. The right-handed shooting defender set a number of career marks in 2013-14, but he might have to wait for injuries to strike before taking a more prominent spot on the blue line.
