Rangers add suspended Valentenko

News: The Rangers have started trimming salary by trading star center Scott Gomez to the Montreal Canadiens for forward Christopher Higgins in a six-player deal. On the eve of the NHL free-agent shopping season, New York sent Gomez and his big contract that has five years remaining to Montreal on Tuesday with minor leaguers Tom Pyatt and Mike Busto. Along with Higgins, a Long Island native, the Rangers are receiving defensemen Ryan McDonagh and Pavel Valentenko from the Canadiens.
Analysis: Valentenko was suspended by the Canadiens in October after he abruptly left to join the KHL (Russia). The trade to the Rangers might bring back the 2006 fifth-round pick, but we aren't expecting much of a Fantasy impact, if any at all. Ignore him in all Fantasy formats.

Valentenko suspended by Canadiens

News: The Montreal Canadiens suspended Pavel Valentenko without pay Friday after the prospect left the AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs to sign a three-year contract with Dynamo Moscow. Valentenko was in the second year of a three-year, entry-level deal with the Canadiens organization. He signed with Dynamo at the urging of his family, his agent Rolland Hedges said.
Analysis: Valentenko will need clearance from the Russian Hockey Federation before he can play for Dynamo in the Continental Hockey League, known as the KHL, according to Hedges. The NHL is without an agreement with the Russian federation on player transfers. The two sides remain at odds about the signing of Alexander Radulov of the Nashville Predators to a three-year contract reportedly worth $13 million with Russian club Salavat Ufa last summer. Valentenko, a fifth-round pick in 2006, had 16 points and 58 penalty minutes in 57 games with Hamilton last season. He really wasn't expected to turn into anything spectacular, Fantasy-wise, so continue to ignore him in all formats.

Valentenko heads home to Russia

News: The Montreal Gazette reports that Canadiens blue-line prospect Pavel Valentenko has left his AHL team, the Hamilton Bulldogs, to instead sign with Dynamo Moscow of the Russian KHL.
Analysis: Valentenko, a fifth-round pick in 2006, had 16 points and 58 penalty minutes in 57 games with Hamilton last season. He really wasn't expected to turn into anything spectacular, Fantasy-wise, so continue to ignore him in all formats.

Canadiens trim roster down

News: The Montreal Canadiens sent the following players to minor-league camp on Sunday: D P.K. Subban, C Olivier Fortier, G Cedrick Desjardins, G Loic Lacasse, D Pavel Valentenko, D Shawn Belle, D Chad Anderson, C Brock Trotter, C Ryan White, RW James Wyman, C Mike Glumac, C Olivier Latendresse, C Yanick Lehoux, LW Ryan Flinn, C Mathieu Aubin, C Ryan Russell, C David Desharnais and RW Thomas Beauregard.
Analysis: Subban and Fortier are decent prospects worth owning in deeper keeper formats, while all the others in this list should continue to be ignored.

Valentenko ticketed for AHL

News: The Sports Xchange reports Canadiens D Pavel Valentenko missed the team's development camp in July but he'll spend the month of August working with a skating coach in Ottawa. The Russian will start the season in Hamilton (AHL), but the Canadiens hope to give him a taste of the NHL at some point during the season.
Analysis: Valentenko was the Canadiens' fifth-round choice in 2006. He has 16 points (one goal) in 57 games with Hamilton last season. He is nothing more than organizational depth and can be ignored in Fantasy.

Habs trim roster significantly

News: The Montreal Canadiens announced they were sending Andrew Archer, Mathieu Aubin, Ajay Baines, Thomas Beauregard, Mathieu Biron, Jimmy Bonneau, Mathieu Carle, Jean-Philippe Cote, Yann Danis, Jonathan Ferland, Jon Gleed, Marvin Degon, Loic Lacasse, Janne Lahti, Francis Lemieux, Corey Locke, Eric Manlow, Duncan Milroy, Jamie Rivers, Ryan Russell, Gregory Stewart, Cory Urquhart and Pavel Valentenko to Hamilton of the AHL on Monday.
Analysis: Well, it looks like the Bulldogs roster is mostly set. Danis loses out to Jaroslav Halak and Cristobal Huet for one of the two goaltender spots for the Habs. Ben Maxwell and Ryan White were also assigned to Kootenay and Calgary of the junior ranks. Only Carle has any long-term keeper Fantasy value, but he is battling back from injury right now.
