Canes' Matsumoto Sent Back Down To AHL

News: As expected, Matsumoto was assigned to the Charlotte Checkers (AHL) to make room for Jussi Jokinen, who returned from a lower-body injury Tuesday, the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Matsumoto could be brought up again if (or when) the injury bug comes back to bite the team's forward corps. He simply doesn't play enough to warrant fantasy consideration.

Canes' Matsumoto The Odd Man Out?

News: Matsumoto seems to be the most likely choice for reassignment to AHL Charlotte with Jussi Jokinen (lower body) expected to return to the lineup Tuesday against Calgary, the Hurricanes' official site reports.
Analysis: The team has yet to officially announce a roster move to make room for Jokinen, but Matsumoto is likely to be the odd man out. After all, Matsumoto has been limited to 3:53 and 5:13 of ice time respectively, in two games since being called up to the majors January 7.

Hurricanes Recall Matsumoto

Analysis: Matsumoto will be in Raleigh for his third stint with the Hurricanes this season, taking the place of Jiri Tlusty, who was placed on injured reserve. Matsumoto has some offensive potential (24 points in 25 AHL games), but he has just two goals and no assists in 11 NHL games this season.

Carolina's Matsumoto Headed to AHL

News: Matsumoto was sent back to the AHL on Thursday, NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Given that Matsumoto played about five and a half minutes against Ottawa on Wednesday, the lowest ice time for anyone who played in the game, it's not looking like he'll be a fantasy factor in the near future.

Hurricanes Waive Matsumoto Wednesday

News: The Hurricanes have placed Matsumoto on waivers so the team can send him to AHL Charlotte, according to Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer.
Analysis: Of course, the team's plan to send Matsumoto to its minor league affiliate depends on his ability to clear waivers. The 24-year-old delivered one two-goal performance for his only points in 10 games with the 'Canes.

Canes' Matsumoto Begins Scoring in NHL

News: Matsumoto lit the lamp twice in Carolina's 7-2 win over the Islanders on Wednesday.

Canes' Matsumoto Performing Well in Minors

News: Matsumoto is impressing Hurricanes general manager and vice president Jason Karmanos for his strong play in the minors, the 'Canes official site reports.
Analysis: Matsumoto is currently skating with the Charlotte Checkers, a minor league affiliate of the Hurricanes. He has six points (2 G, 4 A) in five contests, a team high. "Matsumoto has been their best and most consistent player," Karmanos said. "He competes hard, he has played a pretty solid two-way game, and it certainly doesn't hurt that he's put up some points and been involved offensively." Matsumoto is working with a two-way contract this year, so there is the possibility that he could appear with the parent club at some point this season.
