Avs Go With Varlamov On Monday

News: Semyon Varlamov is slated to start Monday's game against the Oilers, Terry Frei of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov, who stopped 35 of 38 shots in Saturday's win over the Sabres, will look to rebound Monday from last Wednesday's rough outing against the Oilers, in which he was pulled after giving up three goals on seven shots. Beyond Monday, coach Patrick Roy indicated that the Avs plan to turn to Reto Berra on Wednesday at San Jose.

Avs' Varlamov Gets Back On Track With 35-Save Win

News: Semyon Varlamov stopped 35 of 38 shots in Saturday's win over Buffalo.
Analysis: A great bounce-back effort from Semyon Varlamov, who had surrendered nine goals in his previous three outings. The 26-year-old advances to 26-18-8 on the season with a .920 save percentage and 2.58 GAA. He's won seven of his last nine games played and has played a whopping 53 games this season, so keep him rolling for these final games down the stretch.

Avs' Varlamov To Draw Start Saturday

News: Semyon Varlamov will be in the crease for Saturday's game against the Sabres, Terry Frei of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov was given a rare rest Thursday against the Canucks, and though backup Reto Berra was able to lead the Avs back to the win column in impressive fashion, coach Patrick Roy will turn the net back to his No. 1 goalie. While Varlamov has scuffled of late with no wins and exactly three goals allowed in each of his last three games, a matchup with by far the league's worst scoring attack in the Sabres should help the goalie get back on track.

Avs' Varlamov No Longer Starting Thursday

News: Though coach Patrick Roy previously indicated earlier in the week that Semyon Varlamov would start Thursday against the Canucks, Reto Berra will instead receive the nod for the Avalanche, Terry Frei of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: After Semyon Varlamov was pulled early in Wednesday's loss to the Oilers upon surrendering three goals on seven shots, Roy said he would "think about" whether he'd stick with the plan to give the goalie another turn Thursday. With Roy evidently changing his mind, Varlamov will earn a rest that was probably long overdue, as he's started 28 of the Avs' last 29 games in goal. Wednesday's loss almost certainly ends the Avs' playoff hopes, so it's possible that Roy could rest Varlamov with even more frequency over the final few contests.

Avs' Varlamov Struggles In Loss To Edmonton

News: Semyon Varlamov pulled after giving up three goals on seven shots against Edmonton on Wednesday.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov only lasted 9:36 in net, giving up three goals on seven shots, before being replaced by Reto Berra in a 4-3 loss in Edmonton on Wednesday. This is the third consecutive game the Colorado net minder has allowed three goals, all three resulting in an Avalanche loss.

Avs' Varlamov To Start Both Ends Of Back-To-Back

News: Semyon Varlamov will start the Avs' games Wednesday in Edmonton and Thursday in Vancouver, Terry Frei of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The Avalanche suffered a huge setback to their fleeting playoff hopes with a loss Monday to the Flames, so coach Patrick Roy will continue to ride his No. 1 goaltender for at least the next two games as the Avalanche look to chase down several teams for the final wild-card spot. Semyon Varlamov is the main reason the team still remains on the fringes of contention, as he reeled off six straight wins while surrendering only seven goals to begin March before losing his last two outings.

Avs' Varlamov Set To Play Wednesday

News: Semyon Varlamov will be between the pipes for Wednesday's game against the Oilers, Jack Michaels of the Oilers Radio Network reports.
Analysis: After winning six straight games while yielding only seven goals during that span, Semyon Varlamov has fallen back to earth a bit, taking loss in his last two turns to the Ducks and Flames. He still played fairly well in both games, so it remains worthwhile to keep rolling him, particularly against the dregs of the league like the Oilers, who are 2-5-3 over their last 10 contests.

Avs' Varlamov Loses To Flames

News: Semyon Varlamov was mediocre Monday, giving up three goals on 26 shots in a 3-2 loss to the Flames.
Analysis: Granted, the Flames have been great lately and are tough at home, but this was the second loss in a row for Varly after rattling off six straight wins. He allowed just seven total goals during the win streak, but six in the last two games, so it looks like he could be trending in the wrong direction at the moment.

Avs Roll With Varlamov

News: Semyon Varlamov is in line to start Monday's game against the Flames.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov will look to bounce back Monday after his six-game winning streak was snapped in Friday's 3-2 overtime loss to the Ducks. Beyond Varlamov's slated start on Monday, coach Patrick Roy relayed Sunday that the Avs have yet to determine their goaltending plans for the team's upcoming back-to-back set, Wednesday against the Oilers and Thursday against the Canucks.

OT Loss For Avs' Varlamov

News: Semyon Varlamov was sensational in an overtime loss Friday, stopping 37 of 40 shots.
Analysis: The overtime loss snaps a six-game winning streak for the Russian netminder, who has been thriving of late. Semyon Varlamov has now allowed a very stingy 10 goals over the last seven contests, and figures to keep racking up the saves as coach Patrick Roy has made it abundantly clear that he plans on rolling with Varly on a near-nightly basis.

Avs' Varlamov Confirmed In Goal Friday

News: Semyon Varlamov has been confirmed as the starter in goal for Friday's tilt with the Ducks, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The Avalanche still remain on the fringe of the Western Conference playoff race, but Semyon Varlamov's work since the calendar flipped to March might be the only thing still keeping the team in the conversation at all. Varlamov cruised to a 5-2 win Thursday night against the Coyotes, claiming his season-best sixth straight victory. He's allowed only seven goals during the winning streak, making him an appealing lineup choice against any opponent for now.

Avs' Varlamov Likely Starting Friday

News: Semyon Varlamov is expected to start Friday's game against the Ducks.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov will be in search of his seventh consecutive win, after stopping 28 of 30 shots in Thursday's 5-2 win over the Coyotes. The opponent will be much tougher Friday night, but the Avs finally seem to have their act together, though it may be too late in the season to really matter.

Varlamov, Avs Roll Over Arizona

News: Semyon Varlamov cruised to his sixth consecutive win Thursday, stopping 28 of 30 in a 5-2 road victory over the Coyotes.
Analysis: The Coyotes aren't exactly strong competition, but you won't hear Semyon Varlamov's fantasy owners complaining. Varly's looked positively stud-like during his winning streak, which spans the month of March to this point, as he's only given up seven goals over this six-game run. Thursday's .933 is actually the worst save percentage he's posted in March. Spiffy work.

Avs' Varlamov To Get Nod Thursday

News: Semyon Varlamov will be between the pipes for Thursday's game against the Coyotes, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov is in the midst of one of his best stretches of the season, having reeled off five consecutive wins while posting a 1.00 GAA and .968 save percentage. With the Coyotes owning one of the league's weakest attacks and resembling nothing close to a competitive squad at the moment, Varlamov makes for an easy activation.

Avs' Varlamov Shuts Down Flames

News: Semyon Varlamov made 29 saves on 31 shots in Saturday's win over the Flames.
Analysis: That's five straight wins for Semyon Varlamov, who has only allowed five goals in that stretch. He's on fire right now. With an impressive .922 save percentage and a 24-17-7 record on the season, Varlamov should be rolled out with confidence.

Avs Roll With Varlamov On Saturday

News: Semyon Varlamov is going to be in the net for Saturday's game against the Flames, Terry Frei of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov shook off a one-game absence due to groin injury to remain hot in his return to the net Thursday against the Devils, stopping 23 of 24 shots before prevailing in the shootout. He enters play Saturday with a four-game winning streak, during which he's surrendered a total of three goals. It's worthwhile to keep him active Saturday, even against a Flames squad that has been scoring goals at a steady clip of late.

Avs' Varlamov Wins Fourth Straight

News: Semyon Varlamov had been questionable for Thursday's game due to a groin ailment, but he slammed the door on the Devils anyway, stopping 23 of 24 and earning a shootout win.
Analysis: That's four consecutive wins for Varly, and he's given up just three goals in that span, helping to pull his stats back toward last season's sparkling levels. The injury is still kind of concerning, since he's already missed two periods of time this year with a groin issue, and it seems like something that's dogging him in the long term. But hey, when he's playing, he's a very good roll.

Avs' Varlamov Will Start Thursday

News: Coach Patrick Roy confirmed that Semyon Varlamov (groin) will play Thursday against the Devils.
Analysis: Moreover, Roy said that Semyon Varlamov is "100 percent" recovered from the minor groin injury, a surprising development after he wasn't permitted to skate Wednesday. He was back on the ice for a workout Thursday morning and didn't seem to be facing any limitations, so it looks like he'll be a safe option for fantasy owners to count on against a low-scoring Devils squad. Even so, Varlamov has been bothered by groin issues all season, and with his workload beginning to mount while the Avs are beginning to lose ground in the playoff race, it wouldn't be a surprise if he was rested more frequently down the stretch.

Avs' Varlamov Misses Practice

News: Semyon Varlamov (groin) was absent from Wednesday's practice and didn't skate on his own beforehand, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Coach Patrick Roy hasn't provided an update on his plans for Thursday's game against the Devils, but it appears doubtful that Semyon Varlamov will warrant consideration for the nod. In fact, with the Avalanche's playoff hopes beginning to fade rapidly, it wouldn't be a surprise if the team ended up shutting down Varlamov for an extended period of time. He's already required two separate brief stints on IR with the groin injury this season, which evidently hasn't addressed the problem as the team had hoped. Varlamov may require long-term rest in order for his groin to properly heal.

Avs' Varlamov Expected To Skate Thursday Morning

News: Semyon Varlamov (groin) is expected to skate Thursday morning, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: While coach Patrick Roy hasn't formally ruled out Semyon Varlamov for Thursday's game, it doesn't appear likely that the goalie will be ready to go by that time, given his light activity over the last few days. On a positive note, Roy said that Varlamov's latest groin injury isn't as severe as the one that forced him to miss a total of 15 games earlier this season. Even so, he'll likely need to be rested for an additional day or two in order for the Avalanche to feel comfortable rolling him out in the net in the near future.

News: Semyon Varlamov is considered day-to-day with a groin injury.

Avs' Varlamov (Lower Body) Expected To Practice

News: Semyon Varlamov (lower body) is expected to participate in practice Tuesday morning, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: While Semyon Varlamov's presence at practice Tuesday would be encouraging, the team already decided to recall Calvin Pickard for precautionary reasons, giving the club a third goaltender should Varly be unavailable. His official status for Tuesday's game should be released at some point following the morning skate.

Avs' Varlamov Exits Sunday's Game

News: Semyon Varlamov stopped 29 of 30 shots in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Wild before leaving the game late in the third period with an unspecified lower-body issue, the Avs' official site reports.
Analysis: Backup goalie Reto Berra thus finished the contest, making three saves on four shots in the final 5:44 of the game. Per Mike Chambers of the Denver Post, coach Patrick Roy relayed that Semyon Varlamov was dealing with a lower-body issue, possibly a cramp. We'll consider Varlamov day-to-day until the team provides an additional update on his status.

Avs' Varlamov: 44-Save Shutout Win

News: Semyon Varlamov bricked up the net Saturday and delivered a 44-save shutout victory over the Blue Jackets. It was his fifth shutout of the season.
Analysis: He faced a lot of pucks, but not all those shots were quality ones. However, he was impressive in the second when there were some close moments near the net courtesy of Ryan Johansen and Jack Johnson. Maybe he and the Avs can build on this as they try to earn a postseason berth.

Avs' Varlamov Slated To Start At Least Next Two

News: Semyon Varlamov is on track to start both of the Avs' next two games, set for Saturday in Columbus and Sunday in Minnesota, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The will be the 21st and 22nd consecutive starts for Semyon Varlamov, who will more than likely surpass Craig Anderson's club record of 23 before it's all said and done. The Avalanche will have a two-day break in the schedule to prepare for the back-to-back weekend turns, but Varlamov hasn't been particularly strong in such situations this season. He's started both ends of a back-to-back set on four occasions this season, going 0-4-0 with a 4.57 GAA and .871 save percentage in the second half of those scenarios. Nonetheless, the Avs appear content to ride Varlamov heavily to the bitter end, with coach Patrick Roy stating that he only expects backup Reto Berra to make a start or two over the final 18 games on the schedule.
