Avs' Varlamov Hurts Ankle

News: Semyon Varlamov suffered a minor ankle injury Tuesday, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov suffered the injury while at the Francois Allaire camp in Switzerland, but isn't expected to miss much time. The Avs released a statement calling the injury "very minor," so the netminder's status going into next season shouldn't be affected.

Avs' Varlamov Folds In Game 7

News: Semyon Varlamov surrendered five goals on 35 shots as the Avs lost their Game 7 match against the Wild.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov saved two of his worst performances of the season for the final two games of the series, posting identical .857 save percentages in Games 6 and 7. He can take some solace in a superb regular season in which he went 41-14-6 with a 2.41 GAA, but it comes as hardly any consolation for Varlamov and an Avs squad that looked like Stanley Cup contenders through the first two games of the series.

Avalanche's Varlamov Lets In Three In Loss

News: Semyon Varlamov made 18 saves on 21 shots in a Game 6 loss to the Wild on Monday.
Analysis: This is Semyon Varlamov's first bad outing of the series, and he had a great regular season. That bodes well for Colorado's chances of winning Game 7 at home.

Varlamov Stops 30, But Avs Drop Game 4

News: Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves on 32 shots, but it wasn't enough to avoid a series-evening 2-1 loss to the Wild in Thursday's Game 4.
Analysis: It would perhaps have helped if Varly's teammates had managed to put more than a dozen shots on Wild goalie Darcy Kuemper, who could have spent most of this game filing his nails without anyone noticing. Curiously, Semyon Varlamov has played better in the two road games of the series than he did when the Avs took the first two at home, and yet he's been rewarded with a pair of losses while his team's been dramatically outshot (78-34).

Avalanche's Varlamov Stops 45 In Loss

News: Semyon Varlamov made 45 saves on 46 shots but took an overtime loss against the Wild in Monday's Game 3.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov played great, but Colorado got blanked. However, the Avalanche are still up in this series, and seem likely to eventually move on to the next round.

Avs' Varlamov Picks Up Game 1 Win

News: Semyon Varlamov wasn't at his best Thursday, but his 29 saves were enough as the Avs overcame a 4-2 deficit to beat Minnesota in overtime, 5-4.
Analysis: As was the case many times this season, Colorado's offense staged a late-game comeback to steal a win for Varly. The Avs typically give up a ton of shots -- 32.7 per game this season to be exact, trailing only the lowly Oilers in the Western Conference -- so they'll likely need to ride their Vezina-worthy netminder extra hard in the postseason. Expect a lower-scoring affair when the series resumes Saturday at Pepsi Center.

Avs' Varlamov May Not Start Sunday

News: If the Ducks win Saturday night and the Blues lose Sunday afternoon, Semyon Varlamov may not start Sunday's regular-season finale, Adrian Dater of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Should those two outcomes occur, the Avs will be locked into a playoff spot and have nothing left to play for. In such a scenario, it would be quite wise to start either Reto Berra or Jean-Seabstien Giguere over Semyon Varlamov. If the Ducks lose or the Blues win, Varlamov will presumably get the nod, as reported earlier Saturday.

Avs' Varlamov Starting Sunday

News: Semyon Varlamov will start Sunday's regular-season finale against the Wild, NHL.com reports.
Analysis: No surprise here, as the workhorse goaltender caught some rest Friday night, while Reto Berra and J-S Giguere combined to allow four goals on 29 shots. The Avs are still playing for a Central Division title, tied with St. Louis at 111 points with a game remaining for each team.

Avs Slated To Start Varlamov On Thursday

News: Semyon Varlamov is slated to start Thursday against the Canucks, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: With a win over the Canucks, Semyon Varlamov would set a franchise-record with 40 victories on the season, besting current coach Patrick Roy's previous mark. Roy is expected to rest Varlamov on Friday in favor of backup Reto Berra.

Varlamov Breaks Avs' Win Record

News: Semyon Varlamov was terrific again Thursday against the Canucks, turning aside 38 of 40 shots for his league-leading 41st win of the season. The win broke coach Patrick Roy's franchise record, set in 2000-01.
Analysis: On top of breaking the Avs' single-season win record, Semyon Varlamov also led them to their 52nd win of the season, which ties their franchise record (also from 2000-01). The former Capital has allowed two goals or fewer in seven consecutive starts, and is a near-perfect 6-0-1 in that span. Thanks in large part to Varly's stellar play, the upstart Avs now share the Central Division lead with St. Louis with 111 points and have locked up home-ice advantage for the playoffs. Reto Berra is starting Friday, so depending on how the Central Division shakes out over the weekend, Varlamov could be in line for one final regular-season start Sunday against the Ducks. If coach Patrick Roy decides to rest him, however, he'll end the season with an impeccable 2.41 GAA and .927 save percentage -- by far his best numbers since becoming a regular NHL starter.

Avalanche's Varlamov Lets In Two In Loss

News: Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves on 32 shots but took the loss in a shootout Sunday against the Penguins.
Analysis: This is Semyon Varlamov's first loss in six games. In his last six starts, he has not let in more than two goals.

Avs Going With Varlamov Again Sunday

News: Semyon Varlamov will be in the net Sunday against the Penguins, Adrian Dater of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The Avalanche played an afternoon game Saturday against the Blues, so Semyon Varlamov will get a few extra hours of rest as he starts the second game of a back-to-back. He's been spectacular of late with six straight wins and should be used without much reservation Sunday, even against a top-flight team like the Penguins. Varlamov owners in leagues with weekly lineups should keep in mind, however, that coach Patrick Roy plans to use J.S. Giguere and Reto Berra for a start apiece next week, allowing Varlamov to rest up a bit for the postseason.

Avs' Varlamov Rolls To Sixth Straight Win

News: Semyon Varlamov stopped all 31 shots he faced Saturday to shutout the Blues.
Analysis: You'd be hard-pressed to find a hotter goalie at the moment than Semyon Varlamov, who has won six straight contests at a critical time in the season for the Avalanche. In earning his 40th win of the season, Varlamov tied the franchise record previously held by current Avs coach Patrick Roy.

Varlamov, Avs Prevail In Shootout

News: Semyon Varlamov stopped 29 of 31 and all three shootout attempts in Thursday's 3-2 win over the Rangers.
Analysis: That's five straight wins for Semyon Varlamov, and he's had to work hard for them -- four of those games have gone to overtime, and he faced a whopping 49 shots in the fifth.

Avs Plan To Rest Varlamov Prior To Playoffs

News: Semyon Varlamov will likely be rested next week prior to the start of the playoffs, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov is slated to start the Avs' next three games, beginning with Thursday's home game against the Rangers. However, coach Patrick Roy said Thursday that backups Jean-Sebastien Giguere and Reto Berra will each get one start next week, leaving two possible starts for Varlamov to finish up the schedule. This is nothing for fantasy owners to worry about; Roy is just making sure his No. 1 starter gets sufficient rest prior to the postseason. Varlamov has been one of the hottest goalies in the NHL this year, leading the league in wins with 38 heading into Thursday night's matchup with the Blueshirts.

Avs' Varlamov Earns Fourth Consecutive Win

News: Despite spotting a 2-0 lead to the Blue Jackets on Tuesday, Semyon Varlamov picked up his NHL-best 38th win of the season as the Avs rallied for a 3-2 overtime win at Nationwide Arena. He made 24 saves en route to his fourth win in a row.
Analysis: No Matt Duchene, no problem. With Tuesday's win, Semyon Varlamov and the boys from Denver improved to 4-0 this season without their best player, who missed his first game in four months with a knee injury. Varlamov's 38th victory maintains his spot atop the NHL wins perch just ahead of Tampa Bay's Ben Bishop and the Sharks' Antti Niemi, and should help him garner further consideration for the Vezina Trophy. All in all, the Russian backstopper now boasts a 38-14-5 record with an equally impressive 2.48 GAA and .925 save percentage. We still need to caution, however, that Varly has already appeared in six more games than his career-high (plus the Olympics), so those gunning for a championship should be cognizant of the possibility of fatigue throwing him off at some point. That being said, he's still an elite option between the pipes but owners with a capable No. 2 will want to pay extra attention to their matchups.

Avs' Varlamov Starting Next Two

News: Semyon Varlamov will start each of the next two games for the Avalanche.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov will get the call in net Tuesday against the Blue Jackets, as well as Thursday against the Rangers. The netminder has won three straight games, and leads the NHL in that category with 37 victories on the season.

Varlamov's 47-Save Win Leads Avs To Playoffs

News: Semyon Varlamov earned his league-leading 37th win in sensational fashion Saturday, making a season-high 47 saves against the Sharks in a 3-2 victory.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov stood on his head in front of a sold out matinee crowd at Pepsi Center, stepping up after leading-scorer Matt Duchene left early with an apparent knee injury. His 47-save gem against the Sharks also helped the Avs clinch a playoff berth for the first time in four seasons, and gave him sole ownership of the league lead in wins with 37. Needless to say, the man has been lights out all season and a godsend to fantasy owners. The Avs now sit at 100 points in the standings -- one point ahead of Chicago, their likely first-round playoff opponent -- and are motivated to gain home-ice advantage against them. What's more, only one of the Avs' remaining eight games comes in a back-to-back scenario, so Varly should see around five to seven more starts down the stretch. If you haven't done so already, go ahead and hit cruise control.

Avs' Varlamov Earns 36th Win Thursday

News: Semyon Varlamov made 29 saves for the second game in a row, as the Avs edged the Canucks 3-2 in overtime Thursday. It was his league-leading 36th win of the season.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov was solid when called upon Thursday, keeping the Avs in it long enough for Tyson Barrie to snap Vancouver's three-game winning streak in OT. The Vezina Trophy contender has now emerged victorious in eight of the past 11 games, improving his GAA to 2.50 and save percentage to .925 in the process. However, it should be noted that he has faced a ton of rubber this season, as evidenced by his 1668 saves - second only to the Coyotes' Mike Smith. Coupled with his disastrous trip to Sochi for the Olympics, it's conceivable that Varly could be susceptible to fatigue come playoff time, but that's more of a concern for the Avs than his fantasy owners. He'll start again Saturday looking to improve upon his 4-3-2 lifetime record against the Sharks.

Avs' Varlamov To Receive Next Two Starts

News: Semyon Varlamov will be in the net for Thursday's game against the Canucks and Saturday's game against the Sharks, Adrian Dater of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: They will be the third and fourth straight starts, respectively, for Semyon Varlamov, who received two days off last week. He's enjoying a fabulous season for the Avalanche this season, ranking second in the league in wins (35) and tied for eighth in save percentage (.924), among qualifiers.

Avs' Varlamov Comes Away With Shootout Win

News: Semyon Varlamov allowed four goals on 33 shots, but ended up with a shootout victory against the Predators on Tuesday.
Analysis: This marks Varly's second rough outing in his last four games, but the Avs' offense picked him up for his 35th win of the season. Keep rolling him out there; the guy's been one of the league's best this year.

Avs' Varlamov Will Start Tuesday

News: Semyon Varlamov will start in net Tuesday against the Predators, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov will try to break the Avs out of their three-game losing streak against the Predators, who currently sit in last place in the Central Division. The netminder has appeared in 55 games this season, racking up the second-most wins (34).

Avs` Varlamov Eyes 35th Win Friday

News: Semyon Varlamov is expected to be between the pipes Friday in the Avs' highly anticipated matchup with the Bruins, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Varly has had four full days of rest to prepare for the Big Bad Bruins, who are making a rare appearance in Denver riding a 10-game winning streak. A win Friday would be Semyon Varlamov's 35th of the season and keep pace with the Sharks' Antti Niemi -- who won again Thursday -- for most in the NHL. He'll certainly have his work cut out for him against a scorching hot Bruins squad that has scored an unbelievable 40 goals over their 10-game tear.

Varlamov Solid For Avs In Loss To Bruins

News: Semyon Varlamov stopped 26-of-28 shots Friday, but suffered his 14th loss of the year as the Avs were shut out 2-0 at home by Boston.
Analysis: The Russian netminder -- who has allowed two goals or less in nine of his last 12 starts -- kept the Avs in it for 55 minutes against the Bruins. He spent the remainder of the game on the bench after coach Patrick Roy unconventionally pulled him for an extra attacker with five minutes left. Surprisingly, it was backup Chad Johnson -- not 31-game winner Tuukka Rask -- who out-dueled Semyon Varlamov and held the Avs scoreless for the first time this season. Either way, Varly owners need not worry: he'll likely get the nod for Colorado's next game against the offensively challenged Predators and his team has far too much firepower to be held off the scoresheet much longer.

Avs' Varlamov Earns League-Leading 34th Win

News: Semyon Varlamov's shutout bid was spoiled with six seconds left in regulation Sunday, but the Avs still took down Ottawa 3-1.
Analysis: Poor Varly is just plain snakebitten. After slamming the door for the entirety of the Senators' 38-shot barrage, Mika Zibanejad blasted a slapper from the point past Semyon Varlamov with 6 seconds left. The meaningless marker blew his shutout and handed him his league-leading 11th one-goal game of the season. Lack of bagels aside, the sixth-year NHLer now shares the league lead in wins (34) with the Sharks' Antii Niemi and Penguins' Marc-Andre Fleury. He is quickly becoming a household name and if his strong play continues, pundits will have no choice but to include him in Vezina Trophy discussions. Coach Patrick Roy has elected to dish out the next two starts to co-backups J.S. Giguere and Reto Berra, so Varly will be well rested for Friday's measuring stick showdown against the Bruins. Adjust your lineups accordingly.
