Avs' Varlamov Will Play Friday

News: Semyon Varlamov (groin) will suit up for Friday's game against the Canucks.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov won't play Tuesday against the Panthers, but is expected to get the start Friday after the team has a couple days off. The netminder was on a cold streak before getting injured, going 0-2-1 and giving up a total of 10 goals in three games on the season.

Avs' Varlamov To Go On IR If Unable To Start

News: Updating a previous report, the Avalanche haven't placed Semyon Varlamov (groin) on injured reserve, but will do so if he is unable to start Thursday against the Senators, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The Avs' official website lists Semyon Varlamov on injured reserve, but no roster move will become official until the team assesses the goalie's health during pregame warmups. Coach Patrick Roy made it known at morning skate earlier in the day that the team doesn't want to play Varlamov if his groin is bothering him in any capacity, so backup Reto Berra will be on standby to man the net Thursday as a contingency plan.

Avs Move Varlamov To IR

News: Semyon Varlamov (groin) is listed on injured reserve on the Avs' official website.
Analysis: The team hasn't issued an official announcement of the news just yet, but it looks like the groin issue that was bothering Semyon Varlamov during Thursday's morning skate will keep him out for at least a couple of games. Since Varlamov most recently started Tuesday against the Maple Leafs, he won't be eligible to return to action until Oct. 24 against the Canucks. Reto Berra will operate as the Avs' No. 1 goalie in the interim, with the team likely to recall Calvin Pickard from AHL Lake Erie to back him up.

Avs Officially Move Varlamov To IR

News: Semyon Varlamov's (groin) was formally placed on injured reserve Thursday.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov's groin injury is considered mild and the goalie was initially planning to play through the ailment, but it sounds like he may have tweaked it during Thursday's morning skate. As a result, Varlamov will rest for the next handful of games with the hope that the issue clears up completely. He's expected to return from IR when immediately eligible Oct. 24 against the Canucks, but the Avs will likely turn to Reto Berra as their starting goalie for their next three games.

Avs' Varlamov Questionable To Start Thursday

News: Though he was the first goalie to leave the ice at morning skate, Semyon Varlamov is questionable to start Thursday against the Senators due to a groin injury, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: It's not clear whether Semyon Varlamov sustained the injury in his start Tuesday against the Maple Leafs or at the morning skate, but either way, it doesn't sound like his status for Thursday night will be known until pregame warmups. Given the injury concern, it's possible that even if Varlamov ends up starting Thursday, he could get the hook if he struggles early. The nagging groin combined with his rough start to the season (0-2-1, 3.80 GAA, .910 save percentage) might make it worthwhile for fantasy owners to avoid using him Thursday if other options exist.

Avs' Varlamov To Man Net Thursday

News: Semyon Varlamov will be in the crease Thursday against the Senators, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov (0-2-1) is still searching for his first win on the season, but he'll need some better support from his defense in order to get off the schneid. While Varlamov hasn't been especially sharp in his own right, he's still facing an average of 37 shots in his first three starts. Perhaps a matchup against a poor possession team like the Senators will allow the Avs to control the puck most of the night and keep their goalie's workload relatively light.

Avs' Varlamov Stops 37 In Loss

News: Semyon Varlamov saved 37 of 40 shots Tuesday against Toronto, but was stuck with a 3-2 loss in overtime.
Analysis: That'll happen when your team gets outshot 40-24, and Varly's certainly not the first goalie to be victimized by Phil Kessel. The Avs have been rough in the early going, but it's not Semyon Varlamov's fault that they've lost all three of his starts -- the offense has simply failed to show up to this point.

Avs' Varlamov Will Start Tuesday

News: Semyon Varlamov will start Tuesday against the Maple Leafs, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov will take a seat Monday in favor of backup Reto Berra, but will be back between the pipes Tuesday. There's no reason to panic just yet with Varlamov, although he has given up seven goals in just two appearances so far.

Avs' Varlamov Makes 33 Saves In Loss

News: Semyon Varlamov stopped all but two of the 33 shots he faced in Saturday's loss to Minnesota.
Analysis: A great effort by Semyon Varlamov went to waste, as for the second straight game, the Avalanche couldn't score a goal. Varlamov will likely post great individual stats once against this season, but the Avs have looked like a team in regression over the season's first couple games.

Avs Stick With Varlamov For Second Game

News: Semyon Varlamov will be in the crease Saturday against the Wild.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov will be on the lookout for redemption after he was pummeled for five goals on 33 shots in just two periods of action in Wednesday's opener. He'll need some better assistance from his mates if he hopes to reverse course in this one, and perhaps coach Patrick Roy's decision to shuffle his defensive pairs around will be the elixir the goalie needs.

Avs' Varlamov Replaced In Loss

News: Semyon Varlamov allowed five goals on 38 shots before being pulled after two periods in Thursday's loss to the Wild.
Analysis: The Wild recorded a franchise-record 48 shots on the night, so Semyon Varlamov is not entirely to blame for the defensive effort. Backup Reto Berra stopped all 10 shots he faced in relief, but Varlamov shouldn't be in any danger of losing his job going forward. Coming off a career-high 41 wins a season ago, this was not the start expected from Varlamov, but he should be back in net when the Avs take on the Wild again Saturday.

Avs' Varlamov Likely To Start Thursday

News: Semyon Varlamov is the likely starter in goal for the Avs for Thursday's season opener against the Wild, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Coach Patrick Roy didn't explicitly say that Semyon Varlamov would be in the net Thursday, but it's safe to assume that will be the case after he went 41-14-6 with a .927 save percentage over 63 starts. With only the unimpressive Reto Berra behind him on the depth chart, expect Varlamov to see one of the largest workloads in the league this season.

Avs' Varlamov Set For Heavy Workload This Season

News: Semyon Varlamov appeared in three games during the preseason and went 1-2 while allowing seven goals on 80 shots.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov broke out in 2013-14, leading the league in wins, saves, and shots faced while breaking Colorado's franchise record in save percentage. The Vezina finalist may see his numbers dip slightly but will still see his fair share of playing time this season, since the Avalanche don't have a dependable backup. Although Varlamov could suffer from some fatigue later in the season, he will still should be one of the top goalies in fantasy leagues.

Avs' Varlamov Hurts Ankle

News: Semyon Varlamov suffered a minor ankle injury Tuesday, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov suffered the injury while at the Francois Allaire camp in Switzerland, but isn't expected to miss much time. The Avs released a statement calling the injury "very minor," so the netminder's status going into next season shouldn't be affected.

Avs' Varlamov Folds In Game 7

News: Semyon Varlamov surrendered five goals on 35 shots as the Avs lost their Game 7 match against the Wild.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov saved two of his worst performances of the season for the final two games of the series, posting identical .857 save percentages in Games 6 and 7. He can take some solace in a superb regular season in which he went 41-14-6 with a 2.41 GAA, but it comes as hardly any consolation for Varlamov and an Avs squad that looked like Stanley Cup contenders through the first two games of the series.

Avalanche's Varlamov Lets In Three In Loss

News: Semyon Varlamov made 18 saves on 21 shots in a Game 6 loss to the Wild on Monday.
Analysis: This is Semyon Varlamov's first bad outing of the series, and he had a great regular season. That bodes well for Colorado's chances of winning Game 7 at home.

Varlamov Stops 30, But Avs Drop Game 4

News: Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves on 32 shots, but it wasn't enough to avoid a series-evening 2-1 loss to the Wild in Thursday's Game 4.
Analysis: It would perhaps have helped if Varly's teammates had managed to put more than a dozen shots on Wild goalie Darcy Kuemper, who could have spent most of this game filing his nails without anyone noticing. Curiously, Semyon Varlamov has played better in the two road games of the series than he did when the Avs took the first two at home, and yet he's been rewarded with a pair of losses while his team's been dramatically outshot (78-34).

Avalanche's Varlamov Stops 45 In Loss

News: Semyon Varlamov made 45 saves on 46 shots but took an overtime loss against the Wild in Monday's Game 3.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov played great, but Colorado got blanked. However, the Avalanche are still up in this series, and seem likely to eventually move on to the next round.

Avs' Varlamov Picks Up Game 1 Win

News: Semyon Varlamov wasn't at his best Thursday, but his 29 saves were enough as the Avs overcame a 4-2 deficit to beat Minnesota in overtime, 5-4.
Analysis: As was the case many times this season, Colorado's offense staged a late-game comeback to steal a win for Varly. The Avs typically give up a ton of shots -- 32.7 per game this season to be exact, trailing only the lowly Oilers in the Western Conference -- so they'll likely need to ride their Vezina-worthy netminder extra hard in the postseason. Expect a lower-scoring affair when the series resumes Saturday at Pepsi Center.

Avs' Varlamov May Not Start Sunday

News: If the Ducks win Saturday night and the Blues lose Sunday afternoon, Semyon Varlamov may not start Sunday's regular-season finale, Adrian Dater of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Should those two outcomes occur, the Avs will be locked into a playoff spot and have nothing left to play for. In such a scenario, it would be quite wise to start either Reto Berra or Jean-Seabstien Giguere over Semyon Varlamov. If the Ducks lose or the Blues win, Varlamov will presumably get the nod, as reported earlier Saturday.

Avs' Varlamov Starting Sunday

News: Semyon Varlamov will start Sunday's regular-season finale against the Wild, NHL.com reports.
Analysis: No surprise here, as the workhorse goaltender caught some rest Friday night, while Reto Berra and J-S Giguere combined to allow four goals on 29 shots. The Avs are still playing for a Central Division title, tied with St. Louis at 111 points with a game remaining for each team.

Avs Slated To Start Varlamov On Thursday

News: Semyon Varlamov is slated to start Thursday against the Canucks, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: With a win over the Canucks, Semyon Varlamov would set a franchise-record with 40 victories on the season, besting current coach Patrick Roy's previous mark. Roy is expected to rest Varlamov on Friday in favor of backup Reto Berra.

Varlamov Breaks Avs' Win Record

News: Semyon Varlamov was terrific again Thursday against the Canucks, turning aside 38 of 40 shots for his league-leading 41st win of the season. The win broke coach Patrick Roy's franchise record, set in 2000-01.
Analysis: On top of breaking the Avs' single-season win record, Semyon Varlamov also led them to their 52nd win of the season, which ties their franchise record (also from 2000-01). The former Capital has allowed two goals or fewer in seven consecutive starts, and is a near-perfect 6-0-1 in that span. Thanks in large part to Varly's stellar play, the upstart Avs now share the Central Division lead with St. Louis with 111 points and have locked up home-ice advantage for the playoffs. Reto Berra is starting Friday, so depending on how the Central Division shakes out over the weekend, Varlamov could be in line for one final regular-season start Sunday against the Ducks. If coach Patrick Roy decides to rest him, however, he'll end the season with an impeccable 2.41 GAA and .927 save percentage -- by far his best numbers since becoming a regular NHL starter.

Avalanche's Varlamov Lets In Two In Loss

News: Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves on 32 shots but took the loss in a shootout Sunday against the Penguins.

Avs Going With Varlamov Again Sunday

News: Semyon Varlamov will be in the net Sunday against the Penguins, Adrian Dater of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The Avalanche played an afternoon game Saturday against the Blues, so Semyon Varlamov will get a few extra hours of rest as he starts the second game of a back-to-back. He's been spectacular of late with six straight wins and should be used without much reservation Sunday, even against a top-flight team like the Penguins. Varlamov owners in leagues with weekly lineups should keep in mind, however, that coach Patrick Roy plans to use J.S. Giguere and Reto Berra for a start apiece next week, allowing Varlamov to rest up a bit for the postseason.
