Avs' Varlamov Starting Friday

News: Semyon Varlamov will start Friday's game against the Stars, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov gave up eight goals over his last two games, continuing a trend of inconsistency this season. Friday's game will pit two teams that have really struggled defensively this season.

Avs' Varlamov Slated To Start Tuesday

News: Semyon Varlamov was the first goalie off the ice at morning skate and is thus in line to start Tuesday against the Predators, NHL.com's Robby Stanley reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov wasn't sharp his last time out against the Lightning on Sunday, conceding four goals on 28 shots, but he managed to come away with his fourth victory in five games. His performance has been rather uneven of late, and with Varlamov facing the league's top team Tuesday, those in shallower formats may want to consider keeping a different goalie active for the daily slate.

Varlamov Yanked In Avs' Loss

News: Semyon Varlamov gave up four goals on 29 shots Tuesday in a loss to the Predators, getting yanked early in the third period in favor of Reto Berra.
Analysis: Despite a strong save percentage, Varly's been plagued by inconsistency this year. He's given up four goals in consecutive outings, but had allowed just six total goals in the prior four games.

Avs' Varlamov Makes 28 Saves In Win

News: Semyon Varlamov made 28 saves on 32 shots in Sunday's win over the Lightning.
Analysis: It was Semyon Varlamov's fourth win in five games, as he advances to 18-15-7 on the season with a .919 save percentage and 2.59 GAA. He's allowed just 10 goals in his last five outings and is starting basically every game, so keep him rolling. Varlamov is going to need to be very impressive down the stretch if the Avalanche hope to make the postseason.

Avs' Varlamov Will Start Sunday

News: Semyon Varlamov will start in Sunday's game against the Lightening, Drew Spevak of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov will head into Sunday looking for his 18th win of the season. He'll take the ice touting a .920 save percentage and a 2.56 GAA.

Avs' Varlamov Expected To Start Sunday

News: Semyon Varlamov is expected to start Sunday against the Lightning.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov's start would be his 16th consecutive in net, tying him with Patrick Roy for the second-longest since the team moved to Colorado. He's been pretty good in net recently, winning three of his last four starts, and allowing just one goal in each of the three wins. He'll look to continue that success Sunday against the Lightning.

Avs' Varlamov Beats Chicago Again

News: Semyon Varlamov continued to give the Blackhawks fits Friday, allowing just a single goal on a 28 shots in a 4-1 win.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov has just 17 wins in 39 appearances this season, but he's now 2-0 against the normally-formidable Blackhawks with a ludicrous 0.50 GAA and .988 save percentage, due largely in part to his 54-save shutout on Jan. 6. Varly's fantasy value has been somewhat tricky to assess this season, as there's no doubt that he's one of the more gifted goalies in the league who's capable of piling up a ton of saves on a defensively porous Avs squad. His 17-15-7 record, though -- especially in leagues that place emphasis on wins -- has been what's set him back this season, after compiling an insane 41-14-6 record in 2013-14.

Avs' Varlamov To Pick Up Friday's Start

News: Semyon Varlamov will be in the crease for Friday's game against the Blackhawks, Drew Spevak of ESPN Chicago reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov has fond memories from his last visit to the United Center on Jan. 6, when he submitted what might have been the best goalie performance of the season. In that outing, he stopped all 54 shots he faced to score a 2-0 victory. For all those successes, it might be difficult to trust Varlamov to come out on top again versus one of the league's top teams. Over his eight starts this month, Varlamov is 3-5-0 with a 2.53 GAA and .906 save percentage.

Avs' Varlamov Mediocre In Loss

News: Semyon Varlamov gave up three goals on 25 shots in a 4-1 loss to the visiting Kings on Wednesday. The fourth goal was an empty-netter.
Analysis: The Kings came out with a purpose in this one, especially Jonathan Quick who turned aside a whopping 42 shots of his own. With the Avs slipping further out of playoff contention with this loss (seven points back of the final wild card spot), it's conceivable that coach Patrick Roy might give Varly a break at some point. But then again, with no real reliable backup option in Reto Berra, he also may continue to ride Semyon Varlamov, who has developed a reputation as being one of the more heavily-used workhorse goalies in the league. Either way, owners should pay close attention, as he's still an above-average option between the pipes with the potential for wins in favorable matchups. In 38 games this season, Varlamov has 16 wins, a .919 save percentage and a 2.60 GAA.

Avs' Varlamov Takes Net Wednesday

News: Semyon Varlamov will be between the pipes for Wednesday's game against the Kings.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov saw only five shots through two periods of action his last time out Monday against the Coyotes, but still claimed the victory to move two games over the .500 mark for the season. The Avs' leaky defense has often forced Varlamov to see a bevy of shot attempts on the campaign, so it was good to see him get light work for a change. He should be well rested and ready to go for Wednesday's outing.

Avs' Varlamov Picks Up Win In Unusual Fashion

News: Semyon Varlamov allowed one goal on just five shots in a 5-2 win over the Coyotes on Monday. He was also replaced by backup Reto Berra for the third period.
Analysis: It's unclear as to why coach Patrick Roy gave Varly the heave-ho in this one, but since Arizona hadn't mustered a single shot in the second period, it could have been to give Berra some work against a punchless opponent and keep Semyon Varlamov fresh for their upcoming game against L.A. on Wednesday. No report of an injury has surfaced, so we'll chalk this up as another one of Roy's quirky coaching moves for now. Nonetheless, the Russian netminder has now won two straight (giving him 16 wins on the year) to go with his .920 save percentage and 2.59 GAA.

Avs Tab Varlamov For Monday Start

News: Semyon Varlamov will start in net for Monday's game against the Coyotes.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov bounced back with a one-goal effort after allowing five goals in each of his previous two starts to notch his second win of the month. He'll receive nearly every start for Colorado going forward, and brings a .921 save percentage into Monday's contest.

Avs' Varlamov Bounces Back Vs. Dallas

News: Semyon Varlamov stopped 24 of 25 shots in Saturday's win over the Stars.
Analysis: A much needed bounce-back effort from Varly, who had given up 10 goals in his last two starts. His win Saturday was his first in five games, advancing his record to 15-14-7 on the season. While he doesn't win much, his .921 save percentage is still very impressive. If you can deal with some losses, Semyon Varlamov is worth owning, as the Avs are going to rely heavily on him down the stretch.

Avs' Varlamov Getting Another Nod Saturday

News: Semyon Varlamov will be in the crease for Saturday's game against the Stars, Terry Frei of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov has let in five goals in back-to-back contests to extend his losing streak to four games, but it won't be enough to deter coach Patrick Roy from sticking with him. With Reto Berra not endearing himself to the organization and the Avalanche eight points behind Calgary for the final wild card spot in the Western Conference, Varlamov's workload should be the heaviest among all NHL goalies over the final two months of the season.

Varlamov Allows Five As Avs Fall

News: Valamov gave up five goals on 30 shots Thursday in a 6-3 loss to the Rangers.
Analysis: The fact that he wasn't responsible for the empty-netter at the end doesn't make things much better for Semyon Varlamov, who surely has to feel like he should have stopped a couple of those pucks. He's now allowed five goals in consecutive starts, so maybe it's time to get Reto Berra some action.

Avs Stand Pat With Varlamov

News: Semyon Varlamov will receive the start in goal for Thursday's game against the Rangers, Terry Frei of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov has been used with a heavy hand lately, as he'll earn his 11th straight start Thursday. He's coming off losses in three straight games, but only his most recent outing could be described as a dud. The Avalanche's weak defense has forced Varlamov to face a ton of rubber this season, but he's been able to keep the team competitive with a .922 save percentage, good for 11th in the league.

Vas' Varlamov Burned For Five Goals In Loss

News: Semyon Varlamov was torched for five goals on 29 shots in Sunday's loss to the Jets.
Analysis: A rough outing for Semyon Varlamov, who had given up just four goals in his last five starts. We wouldn't be worried about his performance Sunday, though, as he still owns a .922 save percentage and 2.58 GAA on the season. He'll bounce back.

Avs' Varlamov Allows Just One Goal In Loss

News: Semyon Varlamov gave up just one goal on 29 shots in Saturday's loss to the Wild.
Analysis: A strong night for Semyon Varlamov, but he was outdueled by Devan Dubnyk, who recorded his third shutout in four games. It was the second straight game Varlamov has given up just one goal and still lost. He's only given up four goals in his last four games and owns a remarkable .925 save percentage on the season, so once the Avs start scoring again, the wins will follow.

Avs' Varlamov To Start Both Ends Of Back-To-Back

News: Semyon Varlamov will start both ends of the Avalanche's weekend back-to-back, manning the net Saturday in Minnesota and Sunday in Winnipeg, Terry Frei of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The two outings will be the ninth and 10th starts in a row for Semyon Varlamov. With the Avalanche still fighting their way back into playoff positioning following their early-season swoon, Varlamov's usage figures to be burdensome down the stretch, but he hasn't shown any signs of wilting yet. He's conceded a total of three goals over his last three starts to boost his season save percentage to .924, good for seventh in the league.

Avs' Varlamov Takes Tough-Luck Loss

News: Semyon Varlamov delivered a strong outing Thursday against Detroit, stopping 26 of 27, but he was outdueled by Petr Mrazek in a 3-0 loss.
Analysis: At least Varly was only responsible for the one goal, as the latter two came into an empty net. The Russian goalie's been quite strong over his last three, surrendering just three total goals in that span.

Avs' Varlamov Confirmed To Start Thursday

News: Semyon Varlamov will be in the crease for Thursday's game against the Red Wings, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov will attempt to cool a Detroit squad that has won 10 of its last 13 games, but it will be no easy task. Even with that in mind, fantasy owners should have no qualms about sticking with Varlamov, as he's stood tall in wins in his last two outings against two quality offensive attacks in Nashville and Dallas, shutting out the former and limiting the latter to just two tallies on 32 shots.

Varlamov, Avs Triumph In Shootout

News: Semyon Varlamov saved 30 of 32 through regulation and overtime Tuesday, then defeated the Stars in an 11-round shootout.
Analysis: He let the Stars go up 2-0 early, but the Avs mounted a third-period comeback and Varly outlasted Kari Lehtonen in the shootout, stopping eight of 11. He's won three of his last four starts and is 6-2-2 over his last 10.

Avs' Varlamov To Start Tuesday

News: Semyon Varlamov will start Tuesday's game against the Stars, the Denver Post reports.

Avs' Varlamov Makes 23 Saves, Blanks Predators

News: Semyon Varlamov stopped all 23 shots he faced in Friday's shutout win over Nashville.
Analysis: A perfect outing for the workhorse, who has started 14 of the Avs' past 15 games. Semyon Varlamov is now 13-10-7 on the season with a .922 save percentage and 2.62 GAA. He's delivered some consistent play of late, allowing more than three goals just once in his last 10 appearances. Considering he's starting almost every game for an Avs team that has picked up at least one point in six of its last seven games, Varlamov is a great own in almost all formats.

Avs Varlamov Between The Pipes Friday

News: Semyon Varlamov will start in the cage against the Predators on Friday, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov has started 13 of the past 14 games for the Avalanche, so it comes as no surprise that he will receive the first two starts coming out of the All-Star break. He struggled a bit in his last outing, surrendering four goals on 39 shots against the Predators, but will look for a better result in the rematch Friday back at the friendly confines of the Pepsi Center.
