Avs Varlamov Between The Pipes Friday

News: Semyon Varlamov will start in the cage against the Predators on Friday, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov has started 13 of the past 14 games for the Avalanche, so it comes as no surprise that he will receive the first two starts coming out of the All-Star break. He struggled a bit in his last outing, surrendering four goals on 39 shots against the Predators, but will look for a better result in the rematch Friday back at the friendly confines of the Pepsi Center.

Avs' Varlamov Stops 35 In OT Loss

News: Semyon Varlamov made 35 saves Tuesday in Nashville, but gave up four goals, including Craig Smith's overtime game-winner.
Analysis: So often, those OT periods are the difference between a solid fantasy line and an unattractive one. That was certainly the case for Varly on Tuesday. This represents his first four-goal outing since Jan. 4, but it's also his third loss in the last four games.

Avs' Varlamov Confirmed For Tuesday

News: Semyon Varlamov led the Avalanche onto the ice for pregame warmups and has been confirmed as the starter in goal Tuesday against the Predators.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov will match up against Carter Hutton, who will man the net in place of the injured Pekka Rinne (knee). The 26-year-old has made nine previous appearances against the Predators, going 6-3-0 with a 3.06 GAA and .896 save percentage.

Avs' Varlamov Expected To Start Tuesday

News: Semyon Varlamov is expected to start Tuesday's game against the Predators, Marc Moser of the Altitude Radio Network reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov had been playing his best hockey of the season prior to the All-Star break, surrendering two or fewer goals in all but three of his 10 January starts. He'll face one of his stiffer tests of the month against the Predators, a team that has a 15-point cushion over the Avalanche in the Central Division. Fortunately for Varlamov and the Avs, they'll catch Nashville without Pekka Rinne (knee), as backup Carter Hutton is expected to get the nod in the opposite net.

Avs' Varlamov Beats Bruins In Shootout

News: Semyon Varlamov allowed two goals on 22 shots before outlasting the Bruins in a 3-2 shootout win on Wednesday.
Analysis: Varly was clearly outperformed on the other end by the Bruins' Tuukka Rask (34 of 36 saves), but was perfect in the shootout to get Colorado back in the win column after two straight losses. A recent run of improved play has the Avalanche within three points of a playoff spot, so look for Semyon Varlamov to continue to build on his 2.66 GAA and .921 save percentage coming out of the All-Star break next week.

Avs Turn To Varlamov On Wednesday

News: Semyon Varlamov will start in goal Wednesday against the Bruins, the Avs' official site reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov -- who has dropped his last two decisions -- will square off against a Bruins squad that will be playing in the second of back-to-back road contests Wednesday, after topping the Stars 3-1 on Tuesday for the team's sixth win in seven games.

Avs' Varlamov Falls To Blues

News: Semyon Varlamov managed 27 of 30 saves Monday in a 3-1 loss to the Blues.
Analysis: Another tough one for Varly, who has now dropped two games in a row to a pair of top-flight teams (Tampa and St. Louis) despite making 56 of 61 saves. He's certainly due for an all-around improvement to his numbers in the second half, but owners should know that despite his above-average .940 save perecentage and 2.11 GAA in January, he'll have a tougher time picking up victories than other goalies with worse ratios on better teams (Jaroslav Halak and the Islanders being the best example), limiting his value in leagues that heavily value wins.

Avs Go With Varlamov On Monday

News: Semyon Varlamov is slated to start Monday's game against the Blues, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Per the report, Semyon Varlamov is also on track to start Wednesday's game against the Bruins, the Avs' last game before the upcoming NHL All-Star break.

Avs' Varlamov: 29 Saves In SO Loss

News: Semyon Varlamov made 29 saves through overtime, but allowed two goals on three shots in the shootout in a 3-2 loss to the Lightning on Saturday night.
Analysis: He's just 10-10-5, but he does deliver owners a solid save percentage -- he sees a ton of rubber. Roll him if you need a boost in that category.

Avs' Varlamov In The Net Saturday

News: Coach Patrick Roy confirmed that Semyon Varlamov would start in goal Saturday against the Lightning, Marc Moser of Altitude TV reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov has backstopped the Avs to victories in four of his last five starts, stopping over 30 shots on all occasions. He figures to see a ton of rubber once again in a matchup against the league's highest-scoring attack, which should enable him to once again deliver a strong save count. Even if Varlamov doesn't come away with a win Saturday, the strong rate stats he'll supply to fantasy owners might be enough to justify keeping him active.

Varlamov Stops 30 As Avs Beat Panthers

News: Semyon Varlamov turned aside 30 of 32 shots in Thursday's 4-2 win over Florida.
Analysis: That's four wins in the last five games for the Russian netminder, who started this streak with a ridiculous 54-save shutout on Jan. 6. He continues to face a ton of rubber thanks to the unhelpful Colorado defense in front of him, as the 32 shots Varly saw Thursday actually mark the fewest he's faced over the course of this run. He's made a ridiculous 193 saves on 202 shots (.955 save percentage) during these five games. Wow.

Avs Return To Varlamov On Thursday

News: Semyon Varlamov is in line to start Thursday's game against the Panthers, Terry Frei of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov is back in business Thursday for the Avs, after getting a breather on Tuesday when Calvin Pickard drew the team's start in net against the Hurricanes.

Avs' Varlamov Plays Well In Loss

News: Semyon Varlamov made 36 saves but it wasn't enough as he got little offensive support in Monday's 2-1 loss to the Capitals.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov's been great in 2015, as he's now made 36 or more saves in four consecutive starts, allowing just seven goals in that span. He'll finally get a day off on Tuesday as Calvin Pickard will rejoin the team, but owners should keep 26-year-old rolling while he's hot when he's back in net.

Avs' Varlamov To Get Start Monday

News: Semyon Varlamov will make the start in goal Monday versus the Capitals, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: It will be the eighth and final consecutive start for Semyon Varlamov, who will give way to Calvin Pickard for the second half of the Avs' back-to-back set Tuesday in Carolina. After enduring a couple false starts to his season due to a bothersome groin, a healthy Varlamov looks to be back in form for the Avs. He's won three in a row and has compiled a .947 save percentage over five January starts.

Another Win For Avs' Varlamov

News: Semyon Varlamov won for the third straight game and fifth time in his last six starts Saturday, thwarting 37 of 40 shots in a 4-3 win over the Stars.
Analysis: Don't look now, but here comes last year's Vezina Trophy finalist. Semyon Varlamov has made an eye-opening 127 saves over his last three starts and has quietly dragged the Avs within four points of a playoff spot after a dismal 11-13-8 start to the season. He now has 10 wins on the year and has the potential to be one of the more prolific fantasy contributors between the pipes in the second half of the season, making 30+ wins attainable, provided the Avs can continue putting the puck in the other team's net with regularity.

Avs' Varlamov Makes Start Saturday

News: Semyon Varlamov will receive the start in Saturday's matinee against the Stars, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov enters Saturday a winner of four of his last five games, with the highlight of that stretch coming Tuesday in Chicago, when he submitted a 54-save shutout victory. The Stars offer enough potency to make life difficult for Varlamov, but it's probably advisable to roll with the goalie while he's cooking.

Avs' Varlamov Turns In 36-Save Victory

News: Semyon Varlamov turned aside 36 of 38 shots Thursday against the Senators to come away with a 5-2 win.
Analysis: It's the second straight strong outing for Varly, who's now won four out of five and appears to be picking up some momentum after he and the Avs got off to a subpar start this year.

Avs' Varlamov Gets Nod Thursday

News: Semyon Varlamov will be in the crease Thursday against the Senators, Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov submitted perhaps the best goalie performance of the season in his last start Tuesday, shutting out the Blackhawks with an incredible 54-save effort. The Senators' more modest offensive attack shouldn't prove nearly as bothersome, though the Avs' leaky defense has still forced Varlamov to face a ton of rubber this season, resulting in the occasional rotten outing. It's made it tough for Varlamov to trim his GAA into a more respectable range, but it's probably justifiable to keep him active coming off an outing where he was completely dialed in.

Avs' Varlamov Spins Incredible 54-Save Shutout

News: Semyon Varlamov made an unbelievable 54 saves in Tuesday's 2-0 shutout of the Blackhawks.
Analysis: Wow. Just wow. The Avs got more than doubled up in shots, 54-24, and yet Varly simply dominated, stopping each and every one of Chicago's many star scorers. He stoned Patrick Kane seven times, and stopped Patrick Sharp and Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith five times each. And that wasn't even half his night's work. This is why this dude almost won the Vezina Trophy last year. Perhaps the sparkling outing will get him and the Avs going, as the team has struggled all year long -- particularly on defense.

Avs Stick With Varlamov Tuesday

News: Semyon Varlamov will draw the starting nod Tuesday against the Blackhawks, The Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov will make his fifth straight start Tuesday as coach Patrick Roy continues to ride his starting goalie while the Avs' schedule remains clear of back-to-back sets. The netminder is slowly recovering from his slow start to the season, but his overall numbers (7-8-5 record, 2.93 GAA, .911 save percentage) still pale in comparison to last season's marks. It might be worthwhile for fantasy owners to bench him in a road match against the Blackhawks, who have won 17 of their last 22 games.

Avs' Varlamov Gets The Starting Nod Sunday

News: Semyon Varlamov will start between the goal posts against the Blackhawks on Sunday.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov was great in his last start Friday, stopping 27 of the 28 shots he faced. He will get the start Sunday, facing a tough matchup in the Blackhawks, who average 3.00 goals per game on the season.

Avs' Varlamov Struggles In Loss

News: Semyon Varlamov allowed four goals on just 27 shots in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov had been in the midst of a solid stretch, allowing seven goals in his past four coming into Sunday night, but he struggled as he fell to 7-8-5 on the season. He's numbers aren't great, as the 26-year-old has a 2.93 GAA and .911 save percentage, but he should continue to see the majority of the action between the pipes for Colorado.

Varlamov Leads Avs To Win Column

News: Semyon Varlamov turned away 27 of 28 shots and stopped both of the Oilers' shootout attempts to claim the win Friday.
Analysis: Though the game was more tightly contested than the Avs probably thought it would be, Semyon Varlamov ultimately came out on top over the Western Conference cellar-dwellers. With the victory, Varlamov helped get the Avs back to .500 for the season, reviving what had looked to be dimming playoff hopes in the early part of December. With the team still needing to make up ground in the standings, coach Patrick Roy plans to use Varlamov liberally, which should prove beneficial to fantasy owners needing to pad their save totals.

Avs Going With Varlamov On Friday

News: Semyon Varlamov will be in the net Friday against the Oilers, Nick Groke of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: With coach Patrick Roy previously committing to Semyon Varlamov as his starter for every game until the Jan. 12-13 back-to-back set, he'll unsurprisingly get the call for Friday's game. Varlamov has been a bit inconsistent in his three outings since returning from a groin injury, but an outing against the sad-sack Oilers makes him an auto-roll for his fantasy owners.

Avs' Varlamov Victorious In OT

News: Semyon Varlamov grabbed the win Wednesday, turning aside 26 of 29 shots as the Avalanche knocked off the Flyers 4-3 in overtime.
Analysis: After Claude Giroux gave the Flyers a 3-2 lead with 10 minutes remaining in regulation, it looked as though Semyon Varlamov was heading toward his seventh loss of the year. Instead, veteran Jarome Iginla tied things up on the power play a couple minutes later, then Ryan O'Reilly found twine in the dying seconds of OT, improving Varlamov's record to 6-7-5 on the year. Varly still owns dismal ratios (3.00 GAA, .911 save percentage) and has been arguably the most disappointing fantasy netminder this season. With that being said though, there's a chance he's rotting on the waiver wire in your league and with two wins in three starts -- as well as the fact there's nobody overly capable behind him threatening to cut into his starts -- he could be a sneaky pickup in the second half of the season if you need a goalie. Give him a look -- but be wary of injuries, as he's dealt with a nagging groin issue for a good chunk of the season.
