Rangers Ink Hunwick For Defensive Depth

News: Matt Hunwick signed a one-year, $600,000 contract with the Rangers on Tuesday, TSN's Bob McKenzie reports.
Analysis: After accounting for 10 goals and 21 assists over 52 games with AHL Lake Erie last season, Matt Hunwick will give the Rangers some depth at either the NHL or AHL level. Even if he emerges with a spot on the parent club out of training camp, he'll probably either be a healthy scratch or see light minutes on the third pairing most nights.

Avs' Hunwick Sent Down

News: Matt Hunwick was reassigned to AHL Lake Eerie on Thursday, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Matt Hunwick skated more than 17 minutes against the Panthers last Saturday in his lone game with the Avs this season. He's bounced up and down between levels a couple times already, and will probably do so several more times before the end of the year.

Avs' Hunwick Assigned To AHL

News: Matt Hunwick was re-assigned to AHL Lake Erie on Saturday.
Analysis: With Ryan Wilson back from injured reserve, Matt Hunwick was sent out to create room. He didn't appear in any of the Avs' three games prior to his demotion and will be paid $1.6 million this season to play in the minors.

Colorado Waives Hunwick

News: Colorado placed Matt Hunwick on waivers Friday, the Denver Post's Adrian Dater reports.
Analysis: Matt Hunwick played in 43 games last season, mostly on the third defensive pair, but he has yet to appear in a game for the Avalanche this season. If he goes unclaimed, the Avs can assign him to the AHL if they choose.

Avs' Hunwick Will Play Thursday

News: Matt Hunwick (upper body) will be in the lineup Thursday against the Wild, Adrian Dater of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The blueliner will return to action Thursday after missing the last couple games due to an upper body injury. Even though Matt Hunwick is second on the team in TOI per game, he has zero points in seven games so far this season.

Avs' Hunwick Returns To Practice Wednesday

News: Matt Hunwick (torso) returned to practice Wednesday and is expected to play Thursday against the Wild.
Analysis: Matt Hunwick has missed the last two games with an upper body injury but appears ready to give it a go Thursday. Hunwick is expected to take the place of injured Erik Johnson on the top defensive pairing. Hunwick has yet to record a point in seven games thus far, but will have additional opportunities with Johnson out.

Avs' Hunwick Sidelined

News: Matt Hunwick (torso) did not practice Sunday and won't play Monday against the Coyotes, Adrian Dater of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Through seven games, Matt Hunwick has yet to record a point, so this nugget affects the Avs' blue line depth more than it does fantasy owners.

Avs' Hunwick A Healthy Scratch Wednesday

News: Matt Hunwick will not play Wednesday against the Canucks, the Avalanche's official Twitter account reports.
Analysis: Matt Hunwick has skated 20-plus minutes in each of the team's last three games, but he'll sit Wednesday as a healthy scratch.

Hunwick Finally Sticking In Avs' Lineup

News: The Avs' coaching staff have been pleased with Matt Hunwick's play of late, according to the Denver Post.
Analysis: They must be; Matt Hunwick played his seventh consecutive game Tuesday against Minnesota, the first time he's played that many games in a row all season. He's also notched two goals over that stretch, along with a combined plus-4 rating. It will probably take one or two bad games in a row for Hunwick to get swapped out of the lineup at this point - play him if you own him.

Avs' Hunwick Toiling In Obscurity

News: Matt Hunwick sat out Wednesday's 4-1 win over Los Angeles, his seventh consecutive game as a healthy scratch.
Analysis: With a grand total of just 12 games played so far this season, compared to 51 last year, this will go down as a lost season for Matt Hunwick. He continues to be the odd man out on an Avs' blue line dominated by larger, more physical players such as Jan Hejda and Ryan O'Byrne, as well as younger, up-and-coming players like Stefan Elliott. Hunwick is set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season and will almost certainly be looking for a new team to play for come July 1.

Hunwick Having Trouble Cracking Avs' Lineup

News: Matt Hunwick was a healthy scratch in seven consecutive games leading up to the All-Star break.
Analysis: It's hard to recommend a guy when he's watching from the press box every night. The Avs have eight healthy defensemen on the roster at the moment, and unfortunately for Matt Hunwick, he's low man on the totem pole. He shouldn't be on anyone's roster right now.

Rare Start Tuesday For Avs' Hunwick

News: Matt Hunwick will take the place of Erik Johnson (hand) when the Avs take on the Predators on Tuesday, reports the Denver Post.
Analysis: Matt Hunwick is the low man on the Avs' d-man totem pole this season, and will most certainly return to being a healthy scratch once Johnson is ready to return to the lineup. With just a single assist in only 10 games so far this year, Hunwick's fantasy value is about as close to zero as it can get.

No Room In Lineup For Avs' Hunwick

News: Following a stretch that saw him play six consecutive games, Matt Hunwick is back to being a healthy scratch. He sat out his third straight game Monday against Los Angeles.
Analysis: The only real knock against Matt Hunwick is his size; at 5'11" and 190 lbs, he is the odd man out on an Avs blue line chock full of bigger guys like Shane O'Brien, Jan Hejda and Ryan O'Byrne. Hunwick is defensively responsible but doesn't play enough to give him any real fantasy value.

Avs' Hunwick Likely For Thursday's Game; Could Play Forward

News: Matt Hunwick is likely to play Thursday against Calgary and may even line up at forward, reports the Denver Post.
Analysis: Matt Hunwick, who has been a healthy scratch more often than not this season, will now see some action with a number of his teammates out of the lineup, including Paul Stastny (torso), Ryan Wilson (head) and Kevin Porter (suspension). "I want to get Hunny in a game," coach Joe Sacco said. "He has versatility. I could move him up to forward and forecheck and use his speed. I can throw him on the back end. And I could use him on our second power-play unit." Hunwick is a temporary fantasy fill-in at best, and will likely return to the bench once any of the aforementioned players returns.

Avs' Hunwick To Play Saturday As Injury Replacement

News: Matt Hunwick will play in just his third game of the season when the Avs play the Oilers on Saturday, reports the Denver Post.
Analysis: The seldom-used Matt Hunwick came off the bench Wednesday against the Canucks when Erik Johnson had to sit out with a groin injury. Hunwick did not hit the scoresheet but saw 17:22 worth of ice time in that game, including a short stint on the power play. Chances are good Hunwick will return to the bench once Johnson is well enough to play again, so we wouldn't invest too much fantasy capital in him right now.

Avs' Hunwick Exercising Patience As Healthy Scratch

News: Matt Hunwick, a healthy scratch in each of the Avs' first seven games this season, is hoping to crack the lineup soon, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: "It's never fun being out of the lineup, but at the same time it's good the team is winning and all of our defensemen are playing really well right now," Matt Hunwick said. "I think it's a good problem for us to have, but unfortunately for me I'm out of the lineup. If nothing else, it gives me a chance to work on some things, get better, and, hopefully when the time is right, I'll get back in there and play well." Unfortunately for Hunwick, the Avs have rebuilt their blue line this season by focusing on size and strength, with the offseason free-agent signings of Jan Hejda (6-4, 237) and Shane O'Brien (6-3, 230) along with last season's additions of Erik Johnson (6-3, 232) and Ryan O'Bryne (6-5, 234). Hunwick, at 5-11, 190, does not really fit the mold. "Right now we're doing a pretty good job of moving the puck, and yeah, I'm a little bit different than the other guys," says Hunwick. "I'm smaller and can use my speed. The team has options. You want to be covered in all areas." In all likelihood, the Avs will only turn to Hunwick in certain situations where they feel the need for additional speed, or in case of an injury. For now, and as long as the team is winning, coach Joe Sacco is unlikely to do too much tinkering with the exisiting lineup, meaning Hunwick will probably continue to sit most nights.

Avs' Hunwick Scratched Monday Against B's

News: Matt Hunwick was a healthy scratch for Monday's 1-0 victory over the Bruins.
Analysis: Matt Hunwick lines up as the Avs' seventh d-man right now, so expect a lot more nights like this unless the team runs into injury trouble.

Hunwick Stays With Avs

News: Hunwick re-signed with the Avalanche on Thursday, inking a one-year, $1.55 million contract, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Hunwick had a mediocre first season in Colorado last year, recording just 10 assists in 51 games along with a minus-19 rating. However, the Avs are clearly intent on allowing Hunwick to prove himself, considering they gave up a prized prospect (defenseman Colby Cohen) in acquiring him from the Bruins. Furthermore, with the departure of John-Michael Liles, there may be an opportunity for Hunwick to play a larger role on the Avs' blue line next season.

Avs' Hunwich Has Head Injury, Won't Play Thursday

News: Hunwick (head) is doubtful for Thursday's game against Dallas, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The Avalanche now have several injured defensemen on their roster, including Adam Foote (leg) and John-Michael Liles (concussion). On Wednesday, the Avs recalled defensemen Shawn Belle and Ray Macias from AHL Lake Erie as reinforcements.

Avs' Hunwick Returns To Lineup

News: Hunwick was back in the lineup Monday against Anaheim following a two-game absence due to a sore back. He registered an assist in 22:23 of ice time.
Analysis: Given his limited offensive skills (1G, 13A in 69 games), Hunwick doesn't boast much fantasy value in most formats, and his minus-18 rating doesn't help, either. However, if you do rely on him, it appears safe to get him back in your lineup.

Avs' Hunwick Out With Sore Back.

News: Hunwick is day-to-day with a sore back, according to the Denver Post.
Analysis: Hunwick missed both the Avs' games this past weekend - Friday vs. Toronto and Saturday vs. Los Angeles. However, with just nine assists in 46 games this year, along with an atrocious minus-19 rating, he's not much of a fantasy factor anyway.

Avs' Hunwick Benched Again Wednesday

News: Hunwick will once again be a healthy scratch when the Avalanche take on the Coyotes on Wednesday night, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The mobile defenseman has just six points in 46 games, and has drawn into the lineup just once in the past four contests. However, he still averages 17:46 of ice time when he's in the lineup this season.

Avs May Play Hunwick Against Former Team On Saturday

News: Hunwick, who was a healthy scratch in Thursday's 5-1 loss to Nashville, may be back in the lineup Saturday against Boston - his former team - according to the Denver Post.
Analysis: Hunwick has just three assists in 23 games this season along with a team-worst minus-9 rating. He only has fantasy value in the deepest of leagues.

Hunwick to Debut for Avs on Tuesday

News: Hunwick is expected to make his Avs debut Tuesday against the Thrashers, according to the Denver Post.
Analysis: Hunwick is expected to be part of the Avs' top six d-man corps. However, he won't be counted on to fill a scoring role, which limits his fantasy value significantly. He's really only an option in medium to deeper formats.

Hunwick Traded to Avalanche

News: The Bruins have traded Hunwick to the Avalanche in exchange for Colby Cohen, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Despite modest numbers (three points in 22 games) for the Bruins this season, the mobile Hunwick possesses some upside on offense and could benefit from the change of scenery if he ends up on the Colorado power play. One can only assume that the Bruins dealt him to clear up some cap space for the eventual return of Marc Savard.
