Leafs' Finger: Another Season In AHL

News: Jeff Finger was once again sent to the AHL.
Analysis: No real surprise. The Leafs are unbelievably deep on the back end and Jeff Finger just doesn't have the touch to get a job with the big club. This is the last year on his big deal; he may have a hard time proving he's worth even the league minimum somewhere else next year.

Leafs' Finger Clears Waivers

News: Finger has cleared waivers and will head to Toronto's AHL affiliate, Kevin Allen of USA Today reports.
Analysis: The team is still on the hook for his $3.5 million salary, but the good news here is that the Leafs will get to reclaim that space against the salary cap. If they attempt to bring Finger back through re-entry waivers, any team in the league could claim him for half of his remaining salary.

Leafs Put Finger on Waivers

News: The Maple Leafs placed Finger on waivers Tuesday, the Toronto Sun reports.
Analysis: The move will give Toronto, which started the year tight against the $59.4 million salary cap, some extra financial wiggle room, though the Leafs claim that wasn't the only reason for the decision. "It's not so much just a business move," coach Ron Wilson said. "We've got seven guys better than him right now." Assuming Finger clears waivers as expected, he'll report to the AHL and wait to be recalled if the need arises is Toronto.

Toronto's Finger Misses Opener

News: Finger missed Thursday's season-opener against the Canadiens due to a minor knee injury, according to the Toronto Star.
Analysis: Finger is expected to be cleared for practice soon, and should be available for the lineup shortly, where he'll fight for a bottom pair spot among a crowded and talented blue line.

Finger doesn't play in February

News: Maple Leafs D Jeff Finger has been a healthy scratch for seven straight games after not dressing for the team's final game before the Olympic break on Feb. 12 at St. Louis. He last played on Jan. 26 against Los Angeles.
Analysis: It is amazing how far Finger has fallen down the depth chart in Toronto. He came to the Maple Leafs last offseason as a key acquisition and did finish the 2008-09 campaign with a career-high 23 points. He made great strides in his first three NHL seasons, but he has taken a step back in 2009-10. He has just two goals, nine points and a minus-12 rating in 30 games. His poor defensive play has him in the press box. Until Finger is back in the good graces of the Toronto coaching staff he has minimal Fantasy appeal.

News: Maple Leafs D Jeff Finger was a healthy scratch for a second straight game on Friday against the Capitals. Finger has no points in his last 11 games.
Analysis: Finger has fallen a long way since being a key acquisition for Toronto prior to the 2008-09 season. He has gone from blue-line regular to a guy fighting for PT. Until Finger is back in the good graces of the Toronto coaching staff he has minimal Fantasy appeal.

Analysis: Hopefully this will be the last injury Finger has to deal with this season since he has been sidelined for plenty games through the first two months. Finger is still developing as a NHL blueliner, but he remains a low-end Fantasy option.

Finger will sit out on Monday

News: AM640 out of Toronto reports that Maple Leafs D Jeff Finger (lower body) will not play Monday vs. the Islanders.
Analysis: Finger has struggled to crack the Maple Leafs lineup on a consistent basis this season, but has been playing a little more lately. However, he has zero points and a minus-5 rating in his last four games, so wasn't going to be worth using in Fantasy Week 8 (Nov. 23-29) anyway.

Finger to end healthy scratch skid

News: The Toronto Sun reports that Maple Leafs D Jeff Finger will end a six-game healthy scratch skid on Friday when Toronto plays at Carolina. Finger has just one assist and is minus-6 thus far in four regular season games.
Analysis: Finger is clearly not in favor with the Leafs right now and has minimal Fantasy value.

Finger, Mayers play in loss to Capitals

News: Maple Leafs RW Jamal Mayers (head) and D Jeff Finger (oblique) both shook off their injuries to play in Saturday's loss to the Capitals. Finger made an assist, while Mayers picked up two penalty minutes.
Analysis: Both of these guys have very minimal Fantasy value, so don't concern yourself with them at this point.

Finger unable to face Canadiens

News: Maple Leafs D Jeff Finger was scratched from Thursday's lineup against the Canadiens because of an oblique injury.
Analysis: Finger was bothered by the oblique strain for the last part of training camp. His second season with Toronto started much like his first -- battling injury. Finger did have a career-high 23 points last season, but his defense suffered as he finished with a career-worst minus-7 rating. Finger remains a low-end Fantasy option when healthy. He also has appeal in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats.

Finger OK after puck to face

News: Maple Leafs D Jeff Finger was hit in the face with the puck early in the second period Thursday against the Capitals, leaving a large blood stain on the ice. He returned in the third period. Finger didn't have a point in 13:03 of ice time and finished at minus-1.
Analysis: Finger just returned to the lineup Tuesday after missing two games with an upper-body injury. He just can't seem to catch a break in his first season with Toronto as he has played just 49 games due to injury. He still is more of a two-way player than offensive juggernaut, so Finger has minimal Fantasy appeal when healthy.
