Isles' Martinek Struggling To See Ice

News: Radek Martinek has appeared in just three games for the Islanders since being activated from injured reserve Jan. 16.
Analysis: He's managed to finish with a plus-5 rating over those three contests, but the returns of Travis Hamonic and Lubomir Visnovsky from IR eventually pushed him to the press box. Radek Martinek isn't expected to fall into regular ice time anytime soon.

Islanders Activate Martinek

News: Radek Martinek (back) was activated from injured reserve Thursday.
Analysis: After missing just over a month with the back injury, Radek Martinek will return to the lineup on the third pairing, replacing Matt Carkner. Martinek had three assists in 10 games prior to suffering his injury.

Islanders Place Martinek On Injured Reserve

News: The Islanders placed Radek Martinek on injured reserve Thursday with a back injury, Newday's Arthur Staple reports.
Analysis: The nature of Radek Martinek's injury is unclear, but it will keep him sidelined for at least a week. Brian Strait was activated from injured reserve to replace Martinek on the Islanders' roster.

Isles' Martinek Tallies Two Assists Friday

News: Radek Martinek picked up a pair of assists in his season debut Friday night.
Analysis: With 20 points in his previous 84 games played entering Friday, the two-point showing was definitely a surprise, especially considering that Radek Martinek was just added to the mix with a one-year deal earlier this week.

Isles' Martinek Likely To Play Friday

News: Radek Martinek will play his first game of the season Friday versus Pittsburgh, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple.
Analysis: The Islanders are beat up on the blue line with Lubomir Visnovsky and Brian Strait down with injuries. Defense and goaltending are the biggest weaknesses for the Islanders, which does not bode well for a team about to face Sidney Crosby and the Penguins.

Isles And Martinek Agree To One-Year Deal

News: Radek Martinek agreed to a one-year contract with the Islanders on Wednesday.
Analysis: The 37-year-old defenseman will return to the team that drafted him in 1999, providing the Islanders with some veteran leadership along the blue line following the injury to Lubomir Visnovsky (concussion). Radek Martinek has posted 107 points (25G, 82A) and 276 penalty minutes in 473 career games, so he's unlikely to make a huge impact, especially at his age.

Isles Release Martinek

News: Radek Martinek was released by the Islanders on Monday.
Analysis: The Islanders decided to keep a couple of prospects on their roster rather than the aging Radek Martinek.

Isles Bring Martinek In For Tryout

News: Radek Martinek has been invited to Islanders camp for a tryout, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple.
Analysis: This would seem to be an insurance policy against a rash of injuries to defensemen during camp. The Islanders are loaded with bottom-pair defenders on NHL deals. So much so that they probably won't keep any of their prospects even if they outperform their veteran teammates.

Martinek Likely To Play Thursday

News: Radek Martinek will likely play Thursday for the Islanders, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple.
Analysis: With Andrew MacDonald out for the remainder of the playoffs with a broken hand Radek Martinek will draw back into the lineup.

Isles' Martinek Making Season Debut Sunday

News: Radek Martinek will make his season debut Sunday against Carolina. He will replace Joe Finley in the lineup.
Analysis: Radek Martinek's past two years have been injury-riddled, as he missed most of the 2011-12 season with a concussion and was placed on injured reserve in early February with a strained groin and abdomen. Martinek has scored 104 points (22 goals, 82 assists) in 460 career NHL games.

Isles' Martinek (Abdomen/Groin) Activated From IR

News: Radek Martinek (abdomen/groin) was activated from injured reserve Monday, Newsday's Arthur Staple reports.
Analysis: Brian Strait suffered a broken ankle during Monday's game, so the Islanders placed Strait on IR and activated Radek Martinek from it. This would indicate Martinek's ready to go after missing more than two weeks with the injury, so it seems likely he'll be in action Tuesday against Ottawa.

Islanders Place Martinek On IR

News: The Islanders have placed Radek Martinek (abdomen/groin) on IR retroactive to Feb 3, Katie Strang of ESPN New York reports.
Analysis: Radek Martinek is dealing with a strained groin and abdomen, and there is no timetable for his return at this point. Even before the injury, the veteran defenseman hadn't suited up for the Isles yet this season, so he shouldn't be counted on for much offensive production when he returns.

Islanders Sign Martinek

News: The Islanders have signed Radek Martinek to a one-year deal, ESPN New York reports.
Analysis: Radek Martinek missed most of last season due to a concussion, recording just one point in seven games. He will provide the Islanders with depth at defense.

Martinek Has Been Skating With Isles

News: Radek Martinek has been skating with some of his former Islanders teammates during the lockout, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple.
Analysis: It seems to be a good bet that Radek Martinek will get an invite to camp. He might still be able to help the team as a depth defenseman.

Jackets' Martinek Playing In Czech Republic

News: Radek Martinek will suit up for Czech team HC Ceske Budejovice during the NHL lockout, the Canadian Press reports.
Analysis: Radek Martinek was forced out of action most of last season with a concussion, but is fully healthy at the moment. Martinek's deal with the Czech club likely comes with full insurance on any injuries Martinek might sustain, so don't expect the Jackets to be on the hook for Martinek's contract if the concussion issues crop up while he plays overseas.

Martinek (Concussion) Now Healthy

News: Radek Martinek, who missed most of last season with a concussion, has proclaimed himself fully healthy, James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail reports.
Analysis: Radek Martinek, who turns 36 in August, played in just seven games last season but the free agent is apparently talking with several NHL teams.

Blue Jackets' Martinek Out For Season

News: Radek Martinek will miss the rest of the season because of post-concussion symptoms, the Associated Press reports.
Analysis: The concussion bug gets another victim, unfortunately, and Radek Martinek's season will end with just a single point in seven games. The Blue Jackets signed Brett Lebda on Thursday based on the knowledge that Martinek is unable to return.

Blue Jackets' Martinek Skates With Teammates Thursday

News: Radek Martinek (concussion) took part in Thursday's morning skate, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: While Thursday's session was not a full practice, it was Radek Martinek's first skate with his teammates since suffering a concussion Oct. 21. A target date for his return has not been announced, but he could be back within a couple weeks barring any setbacks.

News: Radek Martinek (concussion) has begun skating on his own without any ill effects, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Look for him to start practicing when the Blue Jackets get back from their West Coast road swing.

No Improvement For Jackets' Martinek

News: Radek Martinek has shown little improvement since suffering a concussion Oct. 21, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: "He's still the same," coach Scott Arniel said. "That's sort of a scary situation now. It's not like he's having any great days." Don't expect to see Radek Martinek back in action any time soon.

Jackets' Martinek Suffers Concussion Friday

News: Martinez left Friday's game with a concussion after a hit from the Wings' Darren Helm, the Columbus Dispatch reports. He has been placed on injured reserve.
Analysis: The Blue Jackets' season continues to be one misery after another. No word yet on how long Radek Martinek might be sidelined, but despite his stats so far (one goal and a minus-3 rating through seven games) he will be missed on the Columbus blue line. Prospect John Moore has been called up to take his place.

Blue Jackets' Martinek Leaves with Injury

News: Radek Martinek was injured in Friday's game and is doubtful to return, the Blue Jackets' official site reports.
Analysis: No word on the specifics of the injury or the severity. But it doesn't look like Radek Martinek will be back Friday.

Martinek Will Open The Season On Blue Jackets' Top Pairing

News: Martinez will begin the season paired with Fedor Tyutin on the Blue Jackets' top defensive unit.
Analysis: Things could get shuffled around once James Wisniewski returns from his suspension, but for now the club will be leaning heavily on Martinez as one of its top defensive defensemen.

Martinek Signs With Blue Jackets

News: Martinek has signed a one-year $2.2 million deal with the Blue Jackets, Newsday reports.
Analysis: Martinek joins another former Islander, James Wisniewski, on the re-tooled Columbus blue line. He's not the offensive threat Wisniewski is though, as the stay-at-home rearguard coming off a season in which he scored just 16 points in 64 games.

Martinek Will Test Free Agency On July 1

News: Though the Islanders are still interested in his services, Martinek will become a free agent on July 1.
Analysis: The Islanders wouldn't mind having Martinek back, but they do have a host of younger players they want to give ice time to and Martinek may be looking for a better situation with another team.
