Havelid no longer part of NHL

News: Free agent defenseman Niclas Havelid has signed a contract with Linkoping HC of the Elitserein (Sweden).
Analysis: Havelid played in the SEL in 2004-05 and for many years before coming to the NHL in 1999, so it will be like a homecoming of sorts. It's just very shocking to see him leave the NHL game at this stage since he still has a few years left in the tank. Havelid's offensive prowess did drop the last few seasons and so did his Fantasy value. He could return to the NHL at some point, but it's safe to ignore him in all Fantasy formats.

Havelid gets back on the ice

News: Devils D Niclas Havelid (lower body) returned to action Saturday afternoon against Carolina. He took four shots on goal and finished with an assist. He also finished the game with a plus-two rating.
Analysis: Havelid got a chance to play in the regular season finale and appears to be ready for the playoffs. He never quite made the impact New Jersey had hoped for when he was picked up before the trade deadline from Atlanta. Havelid's offensive prowess has declined the last few seasons and the veteran defenseman will be a low-end option on Draft Day 2009 no matter where he signs in the offseason.

Havelid held out vs. Senators

News: Devils D Niclas Havelid (lower body) did not return to the lineup Thursday against the Senators. He has missed the last three games and remains questionable for Saturday against the Hurricanes.
Analysis: Havelid might play during Saturday's season finale against the Hurricanes or get another game to rest up for the playoffs. He hasn't quite made the impact New Jersey had hoped for when he was picked up before the trade deadline from Atlanta. Havelid's offensive prowess has declined the last few seasons and the veteran defenseman will be a low-end option on Draft Day 2009 no matter where he signs in the offseason.

Havelid held out a second game

News: Devils D Niclas Havelid missed a second straight game Tuesday against the Maple Leafs with a lower-body injury. He remains questionable for Thursday against the Senators.
Analysis: Havelid has no goals, three assists and a minus-4 rating in 14 games since joining the Devils' lineup at the trade deadline. He really hasn't made the offensive impact many envisioned, and as expected, hasn't taken as many shifts either. Havelid's Fantasy value hasn't increased moving to a contender and remains a very low-end Fantasy option.

Havelid out with lower-body injury

News: The Sports Xchange reports Devils D Niclas Havelid missed Saturday game against the Sabres with lower-body soreness. "We want to make sure we don't fool around with it," Devils coach Brent Sutter said.

Havelid gets first Jersey point

News: According to The Sports Xchange, Devils D Niclas Havelid played his second game with the Devils and notched his first point, an assist, with his new team on Tuesday against the Flames. "When you win you feel good about yourself," he said after registering a plus-1 and assisting on Brian Rolston's power-play goal. "You just try to feel comfortable out there."
Analysis: Havelid has gone from a typically cellar-dwelling team like the Thrashers to a legitimate Cup contender in the Devils. The veteran defenseman has two goals and 14 assists on the season as he hasn't been as good of an offensive blue liner since signing with Atlanta in 2005-06. He was a developing presence with the Ducks and could rekindle his game on a top contender like the Devils. Havelid still has low-end Fantasy appeal at this time, but his value could increase if he proves to be effective with his new team.

Devils acquire Havelid in trade

News: The New Jersey Devils added an experienced defenseman two days before the NHL trade deadline, acquiring Niclas Havelid from the Atlanta Thrashers for rookie defenseman Anssi Salmela. "Niclas Havelid is a veteran defenseman who brings a wealth of experience to our hockey team," Devils general manager and president Lou Lamoriello said in a statement on Monday.
Analysis: Havelid is set to become a free agent in the offseason and it has been well speculated that he would get traded. It finally happened Monday. The veteran defenseman has two goals and 13 assists in 63 games. He hasn't been as good of an offensive blue liner since signing with Atlanta in 2005-06. He was a developing presence with the Ducks and could rekindle his game on a top contender like the Devils. Havelid still has low-end Fantasy appeal at this time, but this trade increase his value.

Havelid likely to be traded

News: The Calgary Sun reports the Thrashers have been shopping defensemen Ron Hainsey and Niclas Havelid. Both players are expected to be traded as the March 4 deadline approaches.
Analysis: Havelid is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the season and Atlanta is willing to shed his $2.7 million salary. The veteran defenseman got off to a hot start under first-year coach John Anderson, but then cooled off. He has struggled offensively over the last three seasons, so a chance of scenery could do Havelid some good. Until we see where he lands, Havelid has low-end Fantasy appeal.

Havelid scores for second time

News: For the second time this season, Ducs D Niclas Havelid has scored a goal. This goal came against the Ducks in what turned out to be an 8-4 victory. He now has 13 points on the season with 11 assists to go with his two goals.
Analysis: Havelid is clearly not a goalscorer and not much of an offensive weapon overall. He has been the subject of trade rumors recently and could be on his way out of Atlanta. No matter where he plays, he's only a low-end option.

Havelid has first point in 16 games

News: Thrashers D Niclas Havelid assisted on Slava Kozlov's goal Tuesday against the Lightning for his first point 16 games.
Analysis: Havelid's name has popped up in trade rumors and he might not finish the season with Atlanta. He has been a disappointing Fantasy option after a fast start to the season and just doesn't have much appeal at this time.

Havelid's drought extends to nine games

News: Thrashers D Niclas Havelid failed to record a point in 21:07 of ice time Wednesday against the Flyers. He doesn't have a point in his last nine games and hasn't scored since Nov. 30. Havelid has just five points in his last 25 appearances.
Analysis: Havelid was hot stuff to begin the season with four helpers in two games, but we figured his offensive potential would thin out and it has. Hopefully you didn't buy the boat on Havelid, who is a very low-end Fantasy option. He is also a flier in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats.

Havelid tallies first December point

News: Thrashers D Niclas Havelid tallied an assist and finished at even in 23:04 of ice time Tuesday against the Senators. It was his first point in seven December games. He is still minus-5 in that span.
Analysis: Havelid began the season with four points in two games, but has just three points in his last 27 games. We figured his hot start wasn't going to last. Havelid does see a lot of PT for Atlanta, but remains just a low-end Fantasy option for the deepest of leagues.

Havelid sneaks in first goal

News: Thrashers D Niclas Havelid scored a goal and finished at plus-1 during Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Blues. Havelid gave Atlanta the 2-1 lead with 1:25 left in the first period with his first goal of the season, a shot from the blue line that went over a screened Chris Mason's left shoulder. It was his first point in nine games.
Analysis: Havelid began the season with four points in two games, but has just two points in his last 21 games. We figured his hot start wasn't going to last. Havelid does see a lot of PT for Atlanta, but remains just a low-end Fantasy option for the deepest of leagues.

Havelid posts three assists

News: Thrashers D Niclas Havelid had three assists and a plus-1 rating in 22:37 of ice time Friday against the Capitals. Two of his assists came on the power play and he took just one shot.
Analysis: Havelid had all but 13 assists in 81 games last season and had almost a fourth of that total in his first game under John Anderson. It appears as though Anderson has big plans for Havelid and could return him to the 30-point guy he was with Anaheim back in the day. For now, Havelid remains a wait-and-see Fantasy project.

Havelid comes back to Thrashers lineup

News: Thrashers defenseman Niclas Havelid is over the flu and played over 21 minutes on Saturday when he returned to the lineup in the game against the Lightning.
Analysis: Havelid actually had a solid stretch of games from late November to early December where he posted one goal and seven assists in 10 games. Havelid is among the top three defenders in Atlanta and is averaging nearly 21 minutes per game. But until the points come in consistently, he is merely a low-end Fantasy option.

News: Thrashers defenseman Niclas Havelid was a scratch on Thursday against Vancouver with flu symptoms. He is questionable for the next game on Saturday.
Analysis: Havelid actually had a solid stretch of games from late November to early December where he posted one goal and seven assists in 10 games. However, he has zero goals and just seven assists in his last 32 games. He is among the top three defenders in Atlanta and averaging nearly 21 minutes per game. But until the points come in consistently, he is merely a low-end Fantasy option.

News: Thrashers D Niclas Havelid tallied an assist and finished at plus-1 during Tuesday's game against the Flyers. It was his 12th assist of the season, but first point in 15 games.
Analysis: Havelid actually had a solid stretch of games from late November to early December where he posted one goal and seven assists in 10 games. News: The Sports Xchange reports Thrashers D Niclas Havelid played in his 500th career game in Friday's loss to Toronto. He didn't record a point for the second consecutive game and is at minus-2 during that stretch.
Analysis: Havelid actually had a solid stretch of games from late November to early December where he posted one goal and seven assists in 10 games. Havelid coming up with assists

News: Thrashers D Niclas Havelid tallied an assist and finished at even during Saturday's game against the Capitals. He now has five of his nine assists in his last six games.
Analysis: Havelid has been pretty much sleepwalking this season, but it is nice to see him finally putting some points on the board. He is among the top three defenders in Atlanta and averaging nearly 21 minutes per game. But until the points come in consistently, he is merely a low-end Fantasy option.

Havelid scores second goal

News: Niclas Havelid scored his second goal of the season 4:09 into the third period to snap a tie and lift the Atlanta Thrashers to a 3-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Saturday. The defenseman, who hadn't netted a goal in 10 games, took the puck at the right point -- after Steve Rucchin won an offensive zone faceoff -- skated all the way down to the right post and flicked a short backhander that pinballed off goalie Henrik Lundqvist and found its way between his pads. He also finished the game with a plus-2 rating.
Analysis: Havelid should only be used as a low-end Fantasy defender in the deepest of leagues.

D Havelid scoreless, one SOG

News: D Niclas Havelid, C Niko Kapanen, RW Glen Metropolit, C Jim Slater and RW J.P. Vigier were all scoreless with one shot on goal in Friday's loss at New Jersey.

Havelid notches 100th career assist

News: Thrashers D Niclas Havelid picked up his 100th career assist on Friday when he helped set up Marian Hossa's first goal in Atlanta's 5-4 overtime loss to Phoenix.
Analysis: Despite earning his 100th career assist, Havelid really doesn't get that much in the way of goals (1) or assists (11), but he has a solid plus-12 rating on the season. He is useful as a low-end Fantasy defender.
