News: Steve McCarthy was called up to Calgary on Saturday and will get a shot at making the Flames' squad, the Calgary Sun reports.
Analysis: Steve McCarthy hasn't played in the NHL since 2007-08, but has an outside shot at making Calgary's roster for his veteran leadership.

News: Steve McCarthy is attempting to make the Abbotsford Heat squad, according to the Calgary Herald.
Analysis: Steve McCarthy would make a good mentor for some of the younger defensemen, so Calgary would be well-served to keep him around. He's played in Switzerland recently but hasn't seen NHL ice since 2007-08.

McCarthy traded to Atlanta

News: The Ducks have traded defenseman Steve McCarthy to the Atlanta Thrashers for future considerations. The deal was announced Thursday.
Analysis: McCarthy had no goals, one assist and seven penalty minutes in two preseason games with Anaheim. He previously played with Atlanta during the 2007-08 season. He has appeared in 302 NHL games, including stints with Chicago and Vancouver, with 17 goals, 38 assists and 168 penalty minutes. He spent last season with the Kontinental Hockey League. He has always been more of a defensive presence and never really hit on his offensive skills. McCarthy won't have much Fantasy appeal Draft Day.

McCarthy returns to NHL

News: The Ducks signed defenseman Steve McCarthy to a one-year contract Friday. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Analysis: McCarthy played last season in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), going scoreless with 16 PIM in 18 games with Ufa Salavat Yulayev. He has appeared in 302 NHL games, recording 17 goals and 55 points. He also has 168 penalty minutes. The 1999 first-round pick last played with the Thrashers in 2007-08. He had one goal, seven points and 48 penalty minutes in 55 games. He has always been more of a defensive presence and never really hit on his offensive skills. McCarthy won't have much Fantasy appeal Draft Day.

McCarthy inks deal with Russian team

News: Free agent defenseman Steve McCarthy signed a contract with Salavat Yulaev Ufa of the Kontinental Hockey League (Russia). McCarthy was an eight-year NHL veteran.
Analysis: McCarthy appeared in 55 games during an injury-riddled 2007-08 with the Thrashers. He had one goal, six assists and a minus-23 rating -- the worst of his career. He also had 48 penalty minutes. McCarthy was a marginal Fantasy player and can be ignored now that he is overseas.

McCarthy earns assist back on ice

News: Steve McCarthy returned after missing 10 games with an oblique injury and earned an assist on Ilya Kovalchuk's first-period goal in Atlanta's 4-1 win over Pittsburgh. McCarthy immediately followed a knee-to-knee collision between Kovalchuk and Jarkko Ruutu by crashing into Ruutu and then punching the left winger while having him pinned against the boards in front of the Thrashers bench. McCarthy earned a minor penalty for instigating, a major for fighting and a misconduct. Ruutu drew a pair of majors for kneeing and fighting, and was ejected.
Analysis: With just five points on the season, McCarthy hasn't been much of a Fantasy help to date and can remain out of active lineups.
