Bruins Ink Exelby To One-Year, Two-Way Deal

News: Garnet Exelby agreed to a one-year, two-way deal with the Bruins on Wednesday, CSN New England reports.
Analysis: Garnet Exelby, 31, has played 408 career NHL games but hasn't appeared at that level since playing for Toronto in the 2009-10 season. Although Exelby has a reputation as a capable fighter, he's a long shot to nab any of the top six blueline spots on the Bruins' roster.

Exelby Testing Free Agency

News: Garnet Exelby is testing free agency, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: He piled up 21 points (7 G, 14 A) along with 177 penalty minutes in 75 games for Grand Rapids last season. Garnet Exelby is likely pursuing opportunities that will give him a clearer path to minutes in the NHL again.

Exelby without point in 21 games

News: Maple Leafs D Garnet Exelby hasn't recorded a point since tallying a pair of assists on Dec. 14 against the Senators. That is a span of 21 games without a point.
Analysis: Exelby has no goals and three points in 39 games. It's not like we expected much offense from a player that never managed more than 10 points in a season. However, we are disappointed that Exelby isn't mixing it up a bit more. He has gotten into three fights and has only 47 penalty minutes. He is pretty much a checking presence when he does play and has minimal Fantasy appeal.

Exelby has no points in 11 games

News: Maple Leafs D Garnet Exelby failed to record a point and finished at even on Friday against the Capitals. He has no points in 11 games.
Analysis: Exelby has played a bit more regularly in January as Mike Komisarek has been banged up. But as soon as Komisarek is healthy, Exelby will return to his role as a rotational blueliner. When Exelby dresses it is mostly because Toronto wants a checking presence. Exelby is merely a Fantasy flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM and short-handed stats.

Exelby has only one fight under belt

News: Maple Leafs D Garnet Exelby failed to record a point and finished at even in 12:53 of ice time on Thursday against the Bruins. He has only one point in his last five games.
Analysis: Exelby has only one point in 15 games this season, but that is not the most alarming stat. He has only 19 penalty minutes and one fight under his belt. Exelby is in his first season with Toronto and the Maple Leafs love his toughness. But he usually is considered the seventh blueliner and is a healthy scratch often. Exelby is merely a Fantasy flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM and short-handed stats, but is not a recommended start until he plays on a more regular basis.

Tough guy Exelby dealt to Toronto

News: The Maple Leafs have traded defenseman Pavel Kubina and forward Tim Stapleton to the Thrashers in exchange for defenseman Garnet Exelby and forward Colin Stuart.
Analysis: Exelby continued his role as Atlanta tough guy in 2008-09, racking up 100 penalty minutes for the second time in his career. He was also a great presence on the penalty kill. Exelby totaled a team-high 151 hits and added 99 blocked shots. He will bring some grit to the Maple Leafs blue line, but is merely a Fantasy flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM and short-handed stats.

Exelby plays in first game since injury

News: The Sports Xchange reports Thrashers D Garnet Exelby appeared in his first game Sunday against the Flyers since suffering a hairline fracture in his right leg in a Dec. 26 game against the Hurricanes. Over 13:05 of ice time, Exelby had one shot and one hit, blocked one shot and finished with a minus-1 rating. It wasn't the type of return Exelby, or the Thrashers, had hoped for.
Analysis: Exelby dresses most nights for the Thrashers, but primarily as a checking-line forward. Exelby is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for PIM and short-handed stats when healthy.

Exelby has lower-leg fracture

News: Thrashers D Garnet Exelby was scratched from Saturday's win over the Lightning after learning he has been playing for two weeks with a hairline fracture in his lower right leg.
Analysis: Exelby has not yet scored in 30 games this season and has only four assists. He does very little in terms of Fantasy and should essentially be ignored.

Exelby scratched Thursday vs. PIT

News: D Scott Lehman, called up by Atlanta from Chicago (AHL), made his NHL debut Thursday against the Penguins. He replaced D Garnet Exelby, who is out with a lower body injury. Lehman had no points in 3:03 of ice time.
Analysis: Exelby has totaled no goals, four assists and a minus-6 rating in 30 games. He dresses most nights for the Thrashers, but primarily as a checking-line forward. Exelby is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for PIM and short-handed stats when healthy.

Exelby close to 20 penalty minutes

News: Thrashers D Garnet Exelby didn't record a point 13:26 of ice time Saturday against the Devils, but finished with 19 penalty minutes. Exelby was hit with two minor penalties, a major for fighting and a game misconduct.
Analysis: Exelby has zero points in 11 games, but has managed 27 penalty minutes. He usually sees a lot of short-handed time and is not that big of an offensive weapon. Exelby should only be used in Fantasy leagues that use penalty killers.

Exelby plays in 300th game

News: The Sports Xchange reports Thrashers D Garnet Exelby played in his 300th NHL game in Saturday's loss to the Panthers. Exelby led all Atlanta players with four blocked shots in the game.
Analysis: Exelby doesn't have a point in his first two games, but he is at plus-3 under head coach John Anderson. He usually sees a lot of short-handed time and is not that big of an offensive weapon. Exelby should only be used in Fantasy leagues that use penalty killers.

Exelby costs his team Saturday

News: The Sports Xchange reports if Don Waddell is able to find a willing suitor in a trade for right wing Marian Hossa, the Thrashers general manager and interim head coach might be wise to include Garnet Exelby in the deal. While the affable Exelby is well-liked in the Atlanta locker room, his limitations on the ice continue to hurt the Thrashers' defense at a time when they can afford few mistakes. In Saturday's loss to the Maple Leafs, it was Exelby who was caught flat-footed when he wrongly anticipated a Maple Leafs passing play at Atlanta's blue line.
Analysis: For a player like Exelby, who is forced to rely more on his physical play because of his below average skating ability, it's often all or nothing. Guess wrong when attempting a big hit, and you get burned. That's exactly what happened on Toronto's winning goal early in the third period. Instead of sticking with a cutting Alex Steen, Exelby was looking to deliver a big hit on Nik Antropov. Instead, when Antropov fed a quick one-touch pass to Steen, it was too late for Exelby to react. His decision left defense partner Ken Klee alone to face Steen, who slipped a deft backhand shot over Kari Lehtonen's left shoulder. Exelby is only worth Fantasy consideration in the deepest of leagues which heavily reward penalty minutes.

D Exelby sticks with Thrashers

News: The Atlanta Thrashers have signed Garnet Exelby to a three-year contract on Wednesday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Analysis: Exelby, a gnat of a defender who gets under the oppositions' skin, posted two goals and eight assists last season. He is only worth Fantasy consideration in the deepest of leagues which heavily reward penalty minutes.

D Exelby held off scoresheet

News: Garnet Exelby was scoreless with an even rating and two shots on goal in 22:20 of ice time in Friday's game at New Jersey.

D Exelby doing better, but...

News: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Garnet Exelby (mononucleosis) is doing "much better" after some blood tests earlier this week, but he is still not allowed to be around the team.
Analysis: Fantasy owners will miss Andy Sutton (ankle) a bit in larger Fantasy leagues which heavily reward penalty minutes. Look for Garnet Exelby to have an increased role with the team once he returns.

D Exelby has mononucleosis

News: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Garnet Exelby will be sidelined at least two weeks due to mononucleosis. He might miss as many as five years with the illness.
Analysis: If you depend on Exelby for penalty minutes, drop him and pick up another option to hold you over in Fantasy leagues which reward PIM.

Five Atlanta D-men scoreless

News: Greg de Vries, Garnet Exelby, Niclas Havelid, Andy Sutton and Vitaly Vishnevski were all scoreless in Thursday's game against Washington. de Vries and Vishnevski posted even ratings, while Exelby, Havelid and Sutton were minus-1.
Analysis: de Vries, Havelid and Vishnevski are worth using only in the largest of Fantasy leagues, while Exelby and Sutton are only helpful in formats which heavily reward penalty minutes.
