Panthers Place Thornton On Injured Reserve

News: The Panthers placed Shawn Thornton (groin) on injured reserve Tuesday.
Analysis: Shawn Thornton is not ready to resume playing, so the Panthers decided to deactivate him to open up a roster spot. Thornton has already been sidelined more than a week, so he will be eligible to return to action whenever he is healthy.

Panthers' Thornton (Undisclosed) Likely Out Friday

News: Shawn Thornton missed Thursday's practice due to a groin issue and isn't expected to play Friday versus the Red Wings, Harvey Fialkov of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
Analysis: The groin issue has been bothering Shawn Thornton throughout the season and limited him to off-ice work Thursday. Expect the Panthers to give him a game or two off with the hope that it affords him some proper healing time.

Panthers' Thornton A Healthy Scratch Monday

News: Shawn Thornton will be a healthy scratch Monday against the Blues, according to Panthers announcer Steve Goldstein.
Analysis: Shawn Thornton has been a regular in the Panthers' lineup for most of the season, but he will sit out Monday to make room for Dave Bolland, who will suit up for the first time since Oct. 17.

Panthers' Thornton Draws Back In

News: Shawn Thornton (groin) will return to the lineup Tuesday against the Red Wings, George Richards of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Shawn Thornton sustained the groin injury over the past weekend and was unable to play Monday, but the one-game absence was all he needed to heal up. He'll return in a fourth-line capacity for the Panthers.

Panthers' Thornton (Groin) Out Monday

News: Shawn Thornton (groin) will not play Monday against the Blue Jackets, George Richards of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Shawn Thornton is dealing with a groin injury, as well as facial injuries after a fight during Friday's contest. The team has not revealed much in the way of details regarding the injuries, so consider Thornton day-to-day until further notice.

Panthers' Thornton Pots Rare Goal

News: Shawn Thornton scored a rare goal -- the only one of the game for the Panthers -- in Monday's 4-1 home loss to the Wild.
Analysis: The second-period tip-in tally actually required a bit of finesse from the enforcer, who now has 39 goals in 576 career games. It's no secret that most of Shawn Thornton's value lies in the PIM department, but since he only has 13 on the season, it's tough to recommend the former Bruin for fantasy purposes at this point.

Thornton Ineffective For Panthers

News: Shawn Thornton has only one assist and more shockingly, only 13 PIM in his first 16 games of the season.
Analysis: The 37-year-old veteran was signed to a two-year deal worth $2.4 million in the off season to bring some leadership and toughness to the young Panthers group. He has never been expected to produce much for offence considering he is a staple on the fourth line averaging only 10:30 minutes of ice time per game. Shawn Thornton is only a consideration for leagues that reward PIM. Only problem is with Thornton's age, he is not capable of dropping his gloves like he used to be only a few seasons ago which saw him collect a career high 154 PIM in the 2011-2012 season. Last season with the Bruins, he was able to collect eight points (5G,3A) along with a plus-3 rating and 74 PIM. Expect his totals to drop while his career continues.

Panthers' Thornton Returns Saturday

News: Shawn Thornton (lower body) is back in the lineup Saturday against the Capitals, Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Analysis: Shawn Thornton was held out of Friday's contest with a lower-body concern, but it appears it was only a minor one. He'll replace Jimmy Hayes in the Florida lineup, reclaiming his usual spot on the fourth line.

Panthers' Thornton Ruled Out Friday

News: Shawn Thornton (lower body) will not play Friday against the Sabres, Harvey Fialkov of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
Analysis: It's not certain if Shawn Thornton is still feeling the effects of the injury, or if he's simply one of the Panthers' healthy scratches for Friday's game. Either way, Thornton offers little in the form of fantasy utility when he's in the lineup, so his absence from Friday's game probably will go largely unnoticed.

Panthers' Thornton Misses Practice With Injury

News: Shawn Thornton missed the Panthers' practice on Wednesday due to a lower body injury, Steve Goldstein of Fox Sports Florida reports.
Analysis: The injury only appears to be a minor one, so Shawn Thornton should be back in time to be an option for Florida's game on Friday against the Sabres. Thornton has not scored any points and has accumulated seven penalty minutes in two games played this season.

Thornton Signs With Panthers

News: Shawn Thornton has signed two-year, $2.4 million deal with the Panthers, csnne.com reports.
Analysis: Shawn Thornton, who recorded eight points and 74 PIM in 64 games with the Bruins this past season, isn't much of a fantasy factor, but he'll bring his usual brand of grit, toughness and solid puck skills to the Panthers' fourth-line mix.

Bruins Won't Retain Thornton

News: The Bruins will not re-sign Shawn Thornton for next season, TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: Shawn Thornton is thus headed for unrestricted free agency on the heels of a 2013-14 season in which he recorded eight points and 74 PIM in 64 games, working on the Bruins' fourth line. Thornton, who turns 37 in July, isn't much of a producer on offense, but he brings enough toughness and leadership to the table to help another team looking for checking-line help.

Bruins' Thornton Sits On Saturday

News: Shawn Thornton was a healthy scratch Saturday against the Hurricanes, the Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Matt Lindblad, who took Shawn Thornton's place on the Bruins' fourth line Saturday, was sent back to AHL Providence afterward, which paves the way for Thornton to re-enter the B's lineup Monday against the Wild. With just six points in 49 games though, the rugged Thornton's fantasy utility is limited to formats where his (63) PIMs are helpful.

Penalty Minutes Drying Up For B's Thornton

News: Shawn Thornton has picked up 12 penalty minutes in his 13 games since returning from a 15-game suspension in January.
Analysis: That amount of time in the sin bin would be useful for most forwards, but for a player like Shawn Thornton whose value is almost exclusively tied to penalty minutes, it's just not enough. With the reputation as a dirty player now hanging over his head since he sucker-punched the Pens' Brooks Orpik in a Dec. 7 game, Thornton may not have the zeal for fighting he once had. He'll likely struggle to eclipse 100 penalty minutes this season.

Bruins' Thornton Nears Return

News: Shawn Thornton (suspension), who will miss Thursday's game in Los Angeles, is eligible to return to action Saturday in San Jose, the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: Upon his return to the lineup, Shawn Thornton is in line to rejoin the Bruins' fourth line. With three goals in 27 games to date, Thornton's upside on offense is limited, but he can help out those in PIM-heavy formats. He has racked up 41 penalty minutes to date.

Bruins' Thornton Won't File Second Appeal

News: Shawn Thornton has chosen not to file a second appeal for his 15-game suspension, Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: After the NHL upheld Shawn Thornton's suspension last week, the winger was considering having an independent arbitrator take a second look at the matter. Instead, he'll face the music and serve the remaining five games of his banishment. Thornton will be eligible to return Jan. 11 against the Sharks.

Bruins' Thornton Has Suspension Upheld

News: The NHL has upheld Shawn Thornton's 15-game suspension, TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: The report adds that Shawn Thornton (who was suspended after punching the Penguins' Brooks Orpik while he was down on December 7) and the NHLPA now have the option of appealing this suspension to a neutral arbitrator.

Bruins' Thornton To Appeal Suspension

News: Shawn Thornton will appeal his 15-game suspension, the Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: It seems unlikely that Shawn Thornton, who was suspended for punching Pittsburgh's Brooks Orpik while he was on the ground, will have his suspension overturned completely, but he is hoping to at least have it reduced. Thornton sat out three games while waiting for his suspension to be handed out and will likely miss further action, but with the appeal pending, it remains to be seen how many games he will ultimately be sidelined.

Bruins' Thornton Gets 15-Game Ban

News: Shawn Thornton was suspended 15 games Saturday for his unsportsmanlike behavior during last weekend's game against the Penguins, TSN's Darren Dreger reports.
Analysis: Shawn Thornton predictably received a heavy suspension for his sucker punch of the Brooks Orpik last Saturday that left the Penguins defenseman concussed. With three games of the suspension already served while his case remained undecided, Thornton will spend the next 12 contests in the press box and won't be able to play until Jan. 11.

Bruins' Thornton Awaits Ruling

News: Shawn Thornton met Friday with Brendan Shanahan, director of the NHL's department of player safety, in the wake of an incident last week involving the Bruins' winger and Pittsburgh's Brooks Orpik, the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: A decision on how long the league will suspend Shawn Thornton is expected Saturday, with the Herald speculating that a punishment of at least 10-12 games is likely. Such a scenario would sideline Thornton until early January.

Bruins' Thornton To Have Hearing Friday

News: Shawn Thornton will have an in-person hearing Friday for his sucker punch on the Pens' Brook Oprik over the weekend, Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Shawn Thornton will have missed three games by the time the meeting occurs, and likely stands to receive further punishment beyond that considering the ugly nature of his actions. Nick Johnson was recalled from AHL Providence earlier Tuesday to give the Bruins some fourth-line depth while Thornton remains unable to play.

Bruins' Thornton Faces Suspension

News: Shawn Thornton remains suspended indefinitely, pending a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety that is unlikely to occur until later in the week, the Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Shawn Thornton is in line to face league discipline for punching the Penguins' Brooks Orpik while he was down on Saturday, with the length of his punishment the only question yet to be answered here. While Thornton is out, Jordan Caron is likely to fill in for him on the right side of a Bruins line that also includes Gregory Campbell and Daniel Paille.

Bruins' Thornton: In-Person Hearing After Sucker Punch

News: Shawn Thornton will have an in-person hearing with league disciplinarians next week for sucker punching the Penguins' Brooks Orpik while he was down on the ice in Saturday's game, according to NHL Department of Player Safety. Thornton received a match penalty on the play that sent Orpik to hospital on a stretcher.
Analysis: An in-person hearing is offered for suspensions that can exceed five games. To his credit, Shawn Thornton was quick to apologize for the incident and acknowledged his stupidity in the act. Still, it was ugly and unnecessary, and a suspension is appropriate.

Bruins' Thornton Returns To Mix

News: Shawn Thornton, who was a healthy scratch Monday, returned to the Bruins' lineup Tuesday against the Rangers, scoring a goal in the process.
Analysis: Shawn Thornton, who gave way to Jordan Caron on Monday, rejoined his usual linemates -- Daniel Paille and Gregory Campbell -- on Tuesday, reuniting the team's usual fourth line. To date, the gritty Thornton has three goals (matching his 2012-13 mark, which was compiled in 45 games) and 24 PIM in 20 contests.

B's Thornton Quiet Through Five Games

News: Shawn Thornton has been held scoreless over five games, but has provided 17 penalty minutes.
Analysis: The fourth-liner is averaging just over eight minutes of ice time and isn't counted on to provide much offensive production for the Bruins. Shawn Thornton's value lies almost exclusively in leagues that count penalty time, as he's eclipsed the 100-minute plateau in each of his last four full seasons.
