Jets Release Pesonen

News: Janne Pesonen has been released by the Jets, The Winnipeg Free Press reports.
Analysis: Janne Pesonen's NHL experience is limited to seven games with Pittsburgh in 2008-09. Jets head coach Claude Noel praised Pesonen's game recently, but the 29-year-old winger doesn't appear to have a bright future in the NHL.

Pens lose prospect Pesonen to KHL

News: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports free-agent forward Janne Pesonen, who spent the 2008-09 season in the Penguins' organization, has signed a contract to play for Ak Bars Kazan of the Kontinental Hockey League (Russia). Pesonen's agent, Todd Diamond, said the former Finnish Elite League standout chose to sign with a KHL team after receiving more than a dozen two-way offers from NHL squads, including Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Pesnonen came to North America last season as one of the top overseas imports. He impressed during training camp, but Pittsburgh still wanted him to adjust to the North American game in the minors. Pesonen did just that totaling 32 goals and 82 points in 70 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Unfortunately, he totaled no points in seven games with the Pens. "It was not what we expected," Diamond said of Pesonen's chance to prove himself at the NHL level. "A lot of that had to do with (then-Penguins coach) Michel Therrien, and then the moves and trades they made at the deadline made it more difficult for him. He's not bitter. He's a class act. He would like to play in the NHL in the future if there is a one-way contract." There is always the chance Pesonen returns to the NHL, but he is not worth owning in Fantasy until that happens. It's a real shame since Pesonen had a knack for scoring and probably could have done some serious damage for Fantasy owners.

Pesonen recalled by Penguins

News: The Penguins have recalled LW Janne Pesonen from the AHL.
Analysis: Pesonen has 40 points (13G, 27A) in 34 AHL games this season. He remains a solid keeper option, but should be ignored in seasonal Fantasy leagues until he cement a permanent spot in Pittsburgh.

Pesonen sent back to AHL

News: The Penguins have sent LW Janne Pesonen to the American Hockey League.
Analysis: The 24-year-old Pesonen was a decent scorer during his time in Finland, but has little Fantasy value at this time.

Penguins recall Minard, Pesonen

News: The Penguins have recalled C Chris Minard and LW Janne Pesonen from the AHL.
Analysis: Minard and Pesonen are having nice AHL seasons, with Minard tied for the league lead in goals with 17 and Pesonen with 21 points. Unfortunately, there's just not much room for them in Pittsburgh when everyone is healthy. Pesonen has more keeper value than Minard, but both should be ignored in seasonal leagues for the time being.

Dupuis placed on injured list

News: Pittsburgh placed Pascal Dupuis on the injured list with an undisclosed ailment and recalled forward Janne Pesonen from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL). Dupuis could not return to action on Saturday against St. Louis after being hit by a puck in practice on Wednesday.
Analysis: Dupuis has two goals this season, but hasn't exactly produced as much as he should, considering he's playing on the top line in Pittsburgh. He remains a low-end Fantasy option, when healthy. Pesonen has little Fantasy value at this time.

Penguins send Pesonen to AHL

News: The Penguins waived C Jeff Taffe on Tuesday and assigned LW Janne Pesonen and G John Curry to Wilkes-Barre (AHL).
Analysis: The 26-year-old Pesonen scored 78 points in 58 games last season back in his native Finland, but apparently his game isn't ready for the NHL just yet. He still has some value in keeper formats, however, Curry and Taffe can continue to be ignored in all formats.

Pesonen needs AHL seasoning

News: The Sports Xchange reports Penguins LW Janne Pesonen was assigned to AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Friday. Pesonen, a free-agent acquisition from Finland over the summer, was made expendable because he did not need to clear waivers.
Analysis: The Penguins believe Pesonen needs some seasoning in the AHL but are optimistic he will play in the NHL soon. Pesonen has spent the last six seasons playing with Karpat (Finland). He had a career-high 78 points and 34 goals in 2007-08. He has improved dramatically over the last two seasons and is on the verge of making his mark on the NHL. Keep him reserved in larger Fantasy leagues.

Pesonen making waves in Pittsburgh

News: The Sports Xchange reports Penguins LW Janne Pesonen, a free agent acquisition from Finland, might find himself skating with center Sidney Crosby and right wing Miroslav Satan before too long. LW Pascal Dupuis opened camp at that spot, but Pesonen has impressed coaches and team officials, who believe he will adapt well to the North American game.
Analysis: Pesonen has spent the last six seasons playing with Karpat (Finland). He had a career-high 78 points and 34 goals in 2007-08. He has improved dramatically over the last two seasons and is on the verge of making his mark on the NHL. The Penguins aren't sure if Pesonen can be a top-six forward right off the bat, but he does have potential. Pesonen is nothing more than a potential rookie sleeper heading into 2008-09.

Pens to give Pesonen a long look

News: The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports Penguins assistant GM Chuck Fletcher is one of rookie Janne Pesonen's biggest fans. The former Finnish star is in camp with the Penguins as a 26-year-old rookie. Fletcher served as Anaheim's assistant GM from 2002-06, and the Ducks selected Pesonen in the ninth round (269th overall) in 2004. Pesonen said Anaheim was not a good fit, but the Penguins might be a different story. Pesonen is with Pittsburgh on a two-way contract, meaning he could end up playing in the AHL, but the Penguins are looking for some forward help after losing forwards Marian Hossa, Ryan Malone and Jarkko Ruutu to free agency. "He's not an 18- or 19-year-old kid trying to find his way," Fletcher said of Pesonen. "There's not a lot of risk because, clearly, he has the skill to be successful (in the NHL). I've thought that for a long time, and talking to Janne, he's ready for the challenge of proving himself against top competition."
"I thought he looked pretty good," said Penguins coach Michel Therrien, who lauded Pesonen's speed, conditioning and puck positioning. "But the exhibition games will give us a better look." Pesonen is nothing more than a potential rookie sleeper heading into 2008-09.
