Pens' Bortuzzo To Make Playoff Debut Saturday

News: Robert Bortuzzo will make his first appearance of the 2013-14 playoffs Saturday.
Analysis: Robert Bortuzzo will make his playoff debut as part of a third pairing with Robert Scuderi. He collected 10 assists in 54 regular-season contests, adding 74 PIM, 137 hits and 73 blocks.

Pens' Bortuzzo Returns To Lineup Tuesday

News: Robert Bortuzzo (upper body) will suit up Tuesday vs. the Capitals.
Analysis: He'll join Simon Despres on the Penguins' third defensive pairing. Robert Bortuzzo missed only two games with the upper-body injury.

Pens' Bortuzzo Not In Lineup Monday

News: Robert Bortuzzo will not play Monday against the Capitals.
Analysis: Robert Bortuzzo skated in warm-ups, but evidently didn't feel healthy enough to play. He'll aim to return Tuesday, when the Pens finish up their home-and-home series with the Caps.

Pens' Bortuzzo Present At Warm-Ups

News: Robert Bortuzzo (upper body) took warm-ups before Monday's game against the Capitals, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: We won't know for sure whether he's playing until the game starts, but it looks like a good bet that he'll be in the lineup at this point.

Pens' Bortuzzo Could Play Monday

News: Coach Dan Bylsma said Robert Bortuzzo (upper body) could play Monday against the Capitals, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Robert Bortuzzo will likely come down to a game-time decision after missing Friday's game with the injury. Even with Kris Letang (illness) and Paul Martin (hand) out of commission, Bortuzzo isn't so essential to the Penguins defensively that Bylsma will want him back in the lineup at less than optimal health.

Pens' Bortuzzo Out Friday

News: Robert Bortuzzo is day-to-day with an upper-body injury and will not play in Friday's game against the Ducks.
Analysis: A healthy scratch for much of the season, Robert Bortuzzo has seen more regular playing time lately as a result of injuries to other players. His absence Friday will likely free up a spot for Deryk Engelland on the Pens' third defensive pairing.

Pens' Bortuzzo Playing Consistently

News: Robert Bortuzzo has five assists and 54 PIM in 35 games to date.
Analysis: With all the team's injuries, Robert Bortuzzo has found himself in the lineup pretty consistently of late, although he hasn't been able to take advantage of the extra ice time much on offense. It's unclear how healthy the team will be after the Olympic break, but Bortuzzo can certainly provide some PIM if he continues to suit up regularly.

Bortuzzo Ejected In Pens' Win

News: Robert Bortuzzo was assessed a 10-minute match penalty late in Pittsburgh's 2-1 win at Calgary on Saturday night. He logged an assist and collected 12 PIM on the night.
Analysis: The match penalty was called for causing a deliberate injury. That kind of thing tends to get reviewed by the league for possible disciplinary action. Robert Bortuzzo can't help your fantasy team if he's dressed in street clothes.

Pens' Bortuzzo Playing Well

News: Robert Bortuzzo registered a plus-3 rating and finished with nearly 20 minutes of ice time (19:56 TOI) Friday -- second most among Pittsburgh defenders.
Analysis: He didn't do much to stand out, but the fact that his ice time ranked second shows that coach Bylsma is gaining confidence in him. Robert Bortuzzo might serve as a healthy scratch in future games, especially when Kris Letang and Paul Martin return, but for now he's playing well and the team is rewarding him with ice time. Bortuzzo has three assists, 37 PIM, 63 hits, 34 blocks and a minus-1 rating in 27 games.

Bortuzzo In Monday For Pens

News: Robert Bortuzzo will play Monday against Columbus for the first time since Nov. 23.
Analysis: Speaking at his media scrum Monday, Pens coach Dan Bylsma said he's looking forward to Robert Bortuzzo playing like he did the first 10 games of the season. The big defender, who's served mostly as a healthy scratch since then, has 26 hits and 14 blocks in 15 games, but has yet to pick up a point.

Pens' Bortuzzo Could See More Time

News: Robert Bortuzzo is expected to play Monday in Carolina, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: Robert Bortuzzo, who has served as a frequent healthy scratch, will likely pair with rookie Olli Maatta. The big defender has seven penalty minutes, 14 hits and seven blocks in seven contests, but has yet to record a point. He could play regularly if Rob Scuderi (lower body) misses an extended period of time.

Pens' Bortuzzo Makes Presence Felt Thursday

News: Robert Bortuzzo made a lasting impression Thursday, checking Chicago's Patrick Kane hard into the boards behind Pittsburgh's net.
Analysis: A fighting major was one of three Robert Bortuzzo penalties. The big blueliner isn't a huge offensive threat and won't see any power-play time, but he should compile a decent plus-minus ratio and pick up some penalty minutes whenever he plays for Pittsburgh.

Penguins Re-Sign Bortuzzo On Two-Year Contract

News: Robert Bortuzzo re-signed with the Penguins on a two-year, $1.2 million contract Wednesday.
Analysis: Robert Bortuzzo had some good moments in his first extended NHL action in 2012-13, racking up 27 penalty minutes, four points, and a minus-3 rating in three games. He's projected to be a part of the team's third or fourth defensive pairing to start the season.

Pens' Bortuzzo A Healthy Scratch Saturday

News: Robert Bortuzzo will sit again Saturday against the Canadiens, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: It's a second straight healthy scratch for Robert Bortuzzo, who played pretty well in two games earlier in the week.

Pens' Bortuzzo A Healthy Scratch Friday

News: Robert Bortuzzo will not play Friday against the Panthers.
Analysis: Robert Bortuzzo has two points (1G, 1A) and a respectable plus-four rating through nine games this season, but the Pens will roll without him Friday. He's a healthy scratch.

Pens' Bortuzzo Plays Sunday

News: Robert Bortuzzo skated for the first time in a week Sunday afternoon, finishing with a minus-1 rating in 8:49 of ice.
Analysis: He twice served as a healthy scratch in the last week and will continue to do so until injuries strike Pittsburgh's blue line or the team decides it needs a physical edge.

Penguins' Bortuzzo To Play Sunday

News: Robert Bortuzzo will play Sunday against the Sabres.
Analysis: Robert Bortuzzo was a healthy scratch Wednesday but has two points and a plus-5 rating in seven games this season.

Pens' Bortuzzo A Healthy Scratch Wednesday

News: Robert Bortuzzo will be a healthy scratch Wednesday against the Senators, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Both Kris Letang (groin) and Matt Niskanen (ankle) will return to the lineup Wednesday, so Robert Bortuzzo will watch from the press box.

Pens' Bortuzzo Status In Question Wednesday

News: Robert Bortuzzo would likely serve as a healthy scratch Wednesday if defensemen Kris Letang (groin) and Matt Niskanen (ankle) return to action against Ottawa.
Analysis: The team activated Letang and Niskanen from IR on Wednesday afternoon. It would be surprising to see both blueliners activated and pushed into the lineup, but if they are, then Robert Bortuzzo would sit.

Pens' Bortuzzo Works Well But May Not Have Spot

News: Robert Bortuzzo's spot on the blue line may be in jeopardy when both Kris Letang and Matt Niskanen return from injury.
Analysis: Niskanen isn't expected back for at least another week and Letang's return is more of the day-to-day variety. Robert Bortuzzo, who has played well for Pittsburgh, saw less ice time (15:05) than all Pens' backliners except for Dylan Reese (13:25) -- who would likely serve as a healthy scratch before Bortuzzo. He's stuck in a numbers game at this young stage of his career, but could very easily see regular shifts in the future.

Bortuzzo's First Goal Memorable Saturday

News: Robert Bortuzzo blasted a slap shot past Martin Brodeur for his first NHL goal Saturday.
Analysis: The score came courtesy of a Sidney Crosby takeaway, something Robert Bortuzzo figures to remember for a long time. He's still a sixth defenseman whose strength is in his own zone, but he's looked good in the team's last two games.

Pens' Bortuzzo Makes Season Debut Thursday

News: Robert Bortuzzo saw his first NHL action of 2013 against the Rangers on Thursday, skating 12:11 of mostly even-strength time.
Analysis: With Matt Niskanen on IR and Ben Lovejoy less than 100-percent healthy, the defensive defenseman paired with Deryk Engelland. He only registered one hit, but made it through his season debut without committing any glaring mistakes.

Penguins cut a bunch Wednesday

News: The Penguins sent D Wade Brookbank, LW Luca Caputi, C Dustin Jeffrey, RW Nick Johnson, RW Konstantin Pushkarev, C Wyatt Smith, LW Eric Tangradi, C Joe Vitale, RW Tim Wallace, D Robert Bortuzzo, D Jonathan D'Aversa, D Chris Lee and G Brad Thiessen to the AHL on Wednesday. First-round draft pick D Simon Despres has been sent to Saint John of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
Analysis: Tangradi and Caputi are talented young prospects who had a shot at making the Pens squad, but there just wasn't room for them. They are the only real long-term keepers in this group for the time being, so ignore the others in all formats.
