Blues' Bortuzzo To Play Saturday

News: Robert Bortuzzo (upper body) will play in Saturday's regular-season finale against the Wild, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Robert Bortuzzo will return from a three-game absence to get a tune-up for the playoffs. He should be fine, as the Blues don't have a ton of incentive to take a major risk with their postseason spot secure.

Blues' Bortuzzo Skates Thursday Morning

News: Robert Bortuzzo (upper body) took part in Thursday's morning skate, NHL.com's Lou Korac reports.
Analysis: Robert Bortuzzo had already been ruled out from playing in Thursday's game against the Blackhawks, so he was limited to participating as an extra during the morning session. If the blueliner is able to participate in a practice with the team Friday, he could be an option for the regular-season finale Saturday versus the Wild.

Blues Rule Out Bortuzzo For Thursday

News: Robert Bortuzzo (upper body) will not play Thursday against the Blackhawks, NHL.com's Lou Korac reports.
Analysis: With Robert Bortuzzo due to miss a second straight contest, the lineup spots of Carl Gunnarsson and Barret Jackman -- both of whom have been healthy scratches recently -- should be secure for Thursday.

Blues' Bortuzzo Out Tuesday

News: Robert Bortuzzo (upper body) won't play Tuesday against the Jets, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Robert Bortuzzo, who was forced out of Sunday's win over Chicago, did not practice Monday and his status beyond Tuesday's contest remains to be determined.

Blues' Bortuzzo Exits Game

News: Robert Bortuzzo (upper body) will not return to Sunday's game against Chicago, Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Analysis: Prior to his exit from Sunday's game, Robert Bortuzzo saw just 2:53 worth of ice time. Entering Sunday's contest, Bortuzzo had notched two points and 23 PIM in 11 games for the Blues since being acquired from the Penguins.

Blues' Bortuzzo Gets Rough In Win

News: Robert Bortuzzo managed to take an impressive 17 PIM on Thursday in 4-1 win over Calgary. He also doled out five hits and blocked a shot in the contest.
Analysis: Robert Bortuzzo showed the skills the Blues wanted when they acquired him for Ian Cole, this time dropping the gloves with Brandon Bollig of the Flames. He has just two points in 10 games with St. Louis and his playing time down the stretch will be up and down, so keep an eye on the game-time roster decisions of the Blues if you need him.

Blues' Bortuzzo Scores In Win

News: Robert Bortuzzo scored his first goal with St. Louis on Tuesday in a 3-2 overtime win over Pittsburgh. He was plus-1, took two shots, and added four hits on the night.
Analysis: Robert Bortuzzo and teammate Marcel Goc both victimized their former team for goals in this one. The goal brings Bortuzzo's point total to two in nine games with St. Louis and to eight in total on the season. Bortuzzo's ice time may be in jeopardy when all-star Kevin Shattenkirk (abdomen) returns to the lineup.

Blues Pick Up Bortuzzo In Blueliner Swap

News: Robert Bortuzzo was traded to the Blues on Monday, along with a 2016 seventh-round pick, in exchange for defenseman Ian Cole, Mark Spector of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: Neither blueliner is a scorer, but Robert Bortuzzo fits the suit a little better as the Blues need a fill-in blueliner on a bottom pair while they await the returns of Kevin Shattenkirk and Zbynek Michalek. Bortuzzo didn't score much in Pittsburgh and won't score here either, but he'll do the dirty work and provide some extra depth when the Blues regain full health to their defensive corps.

Pens' Bortuzzo Playing Saturday

News: Robert Bortuzzo (upper body) will play Saturday against the Capitals, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: As expected, Robert Bortuzzo is playing Saturday against Washington for the first time since Dec. 13 after being activated from injured reserve earlier in the day. Brian Dumoulin was scratched.

Pens' Bortuzzo Activated From IR

News: Robert Bortuzzo (upper body) was officially activated from injured reserve Saturday.
Analysis: Coach Mike Johnston called Robert Bortuzzo a game-time decision after he was able to participate in Saturday's morning skate, but his activation suggests it's likely he'll end up suiting up in the match later in the evening against the Capitals. It's certainly possible that Johnston keeps Bortuzzo out an extra game as a precaution, but either way, it looks like he's now being viewed as healthy. If Bortuzzo does end up playing Saturday, he'd likely do so as a member of the club's third pairing with Scott Harrington.

Pens' Bortuzzo Nearing Return

News: Robert Bortuzzo (upper body) will be a game-time decision for Saturday's game against the Capitals.
Analysis: The defenseman, who hasn't played since Dec. 13, has averaged nearly four hits per game (44 hits in 12 contests). Robert Bortuzzo has also collected five points (2G, 3A) in 12 tilts, but he offers more of a physical presence than an offensive threat.

Pens' Bortuzzo Passes Mumps Test

News: Robert Bortuzzo (upper body) tested negative for the mumps and has been cleared to rejoin the team.
Analysis: All of Robert Bortuzzo, Olli Mattaa, and Thomas Greiss fell ill Thursday, prompting the Penguins to isolate them from the rest of the team in the fear that they might have been the latest players to acquire the virus. Only Maatta tested positive for symptoms of the mumps, however, leaving Bortuzzo to resume his recovery process from the upper-body injury he sustained last Saturday. It's uncertain when he might return from that injury, but a better timetable should become available once he resumes skating with the team.

Penguins Place Bortuzzo On IR

News: Robert Bortuzzo (upper body) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Robert Bortuzzo is dealing with the combination of an upper-body injury and an illness that could be related to the mumps, which would have put his status in peril for Thursday's tilt with the Avalanche. As a result, the Penguins elected to move him to injured reserve in order to open up an extra roster spot. Look for the team to recall an extra player prior to Thursday's game.

Pens' Bortuzzo Being Tested For Mumps

News: Robert Bortuzzo (upper body) felt ill Wednesday morning and will undergo precautionary tests for the mumps.
Analysis: Since Robert Bortuzzo was already dealing with an upper-body injury that prevented him from playing in Monday's game, the addition of the illness to his medical report probably rules him out of Thursday's contest against the Avalanche. More importantly, the Penguins will hope that Bortuzzo hasn't become the latest casualty to the virus, which has already struck forwards Sidney Crosby and Beau Bennett. Fellow blueliner Olli Maatta and goalie Marc-Andre Fleury were also feeling under the weather Wednesday and will undergo testing for the mumps.

Pens' Bortuzzo Out For Monday

News: Robert Bortuzzo (upper body) will not play Monday against the Lightning.
Analysis: The team is calling Robert Bortuzzo day-to-day with the injury, and doesn't expect him to be out very long. The blueliner collected two goals and three assists in 12 games before getting hurt.

Pens' Bortuzzo Leaves Saturday With Injury

News: Robert Bortuzzo left Saturday's game after two periods with an undisclosed injury and will be re-evaluated, according to coach Mike Johnston.
Analysis: In 11:59 TOI, Robert Bortuzzo took two shots on goal and delivered four hits in 14 shifts. The Penguins play Monday, meaning that there will be little turnaround time for the defenseman to recover from his ailment.

Pens' Bortuzzo Eligible To Return Monday

News: Robert Bortuzzo will be eligible to play Monday against the Rangers after completing his two-game suspension.
Analysis: There was no official word on whether Robert Bortuzzo, who gives Pittsburgh a physical edge defensively, will suit up against New York. Rookie Brian Dumoulin has filled in admirably for Bortuzzo, but there's a good chance Bortuzzo will skate on the Pens' third pairing Monday.

Pens' Bortuzzo Suspended Two Games

News: Robert Bortuzzo was suspended for two games for his illegal hit on Jaromir Jagr on Tuesday, James Mirtle of TSN Hockey reports.
Analysis: Robert Bortuzzo has appeared in just nine games this season, tallying four points (two goals). Simon Despres could take his spot in the lineup for the next two games.

Pens' Bortuzzo To Play Tuesday

News: Robert Bortuzzo (illness) will play Tuesday against the Devils.
Analysis: Robert Bortuzzo and Sidney Crosby were feeling under the weather and skipped the Penguins' morning skate, but both were on the ice for pregame warmups, verifying their status for Tuesday's game. Look for Bortuzzo to rejoin Robert Scuderi on the third defensive pairing.

Bortuzzo Goes Yard For Pens On Saturday

News: Robert Bortuzzo netted his second goal in eight games Saturday, compiling a plus-2 rating with two PIM, two shots, two blocks and four hits against Carolina.
Analysis: The big blueliner was a late addition to the lineup when doctors encouraged the Pens to scratch Kris Letang (lower body). Robert Bortuzzo is battling Simon Despres for the team's sixth defender's spot, but he's produced surprisingly well -- four points, 14 PIM, 28 hits and 13 blocks -- in just eight contests.

Bortuzzo Back In Friday For Pens

News: Robert Bortuzzo will skate against the Islanders on Friday, Root Sports in Pittsburgh reports.
Analysis: The rugged blueliner, who sat out the team's last game in Montreal, will take the place of Simon Despres in the lineup. Robert Bortuzzo has scored three points (1G,2A) in six games, registering 20 hits and eight blocked shots.

Pens' Bortuzzo Finds Net Saturday

News: Robert Bortuzzo scored a goal and delivered eight hits Saturday against the Sabres.
Analysis: The point was Robert Bortuzzo's second in three games since returning from injury, while the goal was his first since the 2012-13 campaign. The rugged defender gives Pittsburgh a physical edge to its defensive corps -- the points are a fantasy bonus to whatever number of hits he collects.

Bortuzzo Back With Pens On Tuesday

News: Robert Bortuzzo skated with Christian Ehrhoff on Tuesday in his season debut as part of Pittsburgh's second defensive pairing.
Analysis: He totaled 13:46 time on ice, including 27 seconds on the penalty kill, with the remainder of his ice time spent at even-strength. Robert Bortuzzo blocked two shots and dished out two hits. He won't pick up many points, but he also won't hurt fantasy teams with solid plus-minus rating and a decent number of hits. In the past, Bortuzzo has been used as a fifth or sixth defenseman. It will be interesting to see if he and Ehrhoff stick as a second pairing with Simon Despres and Rob Scuderi doing well as the team's fifth and sixth defenders. It's possible the pairings flip-flop or skate equal amounts of time in the future.

Pens' Bortuzzo Healthy

News: Robert Bortuzzo (upper body) is ready to return to action, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: Robert Bortuzzo was a full participant in Monday's practice, and should be considered healthy heading into Tuesday's game against the Wild.

Penguins' Bortuzzo Sidelined A Few More Days

News: Robert Bortuzzo (upper body) remains a few days away from playing, Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Head coach Mike Johnston said Monday that Robert Bortuzzo was ready return, but he changed course Tuesday, and said that Bortuzzo is still about "5-to-6 days" away from taking the ice. Based on Johnston's estimate, Bortuzzo will likely return to action either Saturday against Buffalo, or Tuesday against Minnesota.
