Blue Jackets' Calvert Hopes To Practice Next Week

News: Matt Calvert (concussion) is hoping to return to practice next week, Shawn Mitchell of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Matt Calvert was ruled out indefinitely after suffering the concussion in late February, but seemed on track for a quick return before enduring a setback in mid March. It appears he's turned a corner since that time, but the volatile nature of head injuries makes him far from a safe bet to suit up in the near future. He'll likely attempt to skate on his own over the next few days with the hope that doctors will clear him to start practicing with the team.

Jackets' Calvert Suffers Setback

News: Matt Calvert (concussion) took a step back in his recovery and remains without a timetable for a return, Shawn Mitchell of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: The Blue Jackets will likely bar Matt Calvert from skating for at least the next week until his concussion symptoms begin to dissipate. The volatile nature of head injuries makes it difficult to pinpoint a possible return date for Calvert, so it's certainly possible that he could be shut down for the season if he fails to notice much progress before the end of March.

Jackets' Calvert Making Progress

News: Coach Todd Richards said Thursday that Matt Calvert (concussion) is "making good progress," Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Of the several Blue Jackets players who are nursing injuries, Matt Calvert appears the closest to returning. The team doesn't have a definitive return date in mind for him just yet, but if he's able to resume practicing within the next few days, an activation from IR could quickly follow.

Jackets Place Calvert (Concussion) On IR

News: Matt Calvert (concussion) was placed on injured reserve by the Blue Jackets on Friday, Shawn Mitchell of The Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Matt Calvert was ruled out indefinitely earlier Friday, so it comes as no surprise the Flames placed him on IR, opening up a spot on the roster to recall Brian Gibbons. He will be eligible to return Mar. 5, but it's unclear whether or not he'll be ready at that time.

Jackets' Calvert (Concussion) Out Indefinitely

News: Matt Calvert will be out indefinitely due to a concussion.
Analysis: Matt Calvert has been surprisingly productive in February, piling up seven points (four goals) over 11 games. His absence will likely free up a spot on the second line for either Nick Foligno or recent acquisition David Clarkson.

Jackets' Calvert Scores Twice

News: Matt Calvert scored a pair of goals -- one into an empty net -- and went plus-2 Tuesday in a 5-2 win over the Flyers.
Analysis: After slogging through much of the season, Matt Calvert's seen his offense tick up significantly in the month of February, as he's tallied three goals and two assists in the last six games. He had just 11 points in the 38 games before that.

Jackets' Calvert: Three Points In Last Five

News: Matt Calvert notched an assist in Saturday's 6-3 loss to the Islanders.
Analysis: Matt Calvert has recorded a goal and two assists over his five games since returning from an illness earlier this month. The winger's overall numbers this season don't make him a particularly attractive pickup, but his value could soon be on the rise if he's dealt to a stronger offensive team at the deadline.

Jackets' Calvert To Be Ready Friday

News: Matt Calvert (illness) is expected to play Friday against the Blues, Shawn Mitchell of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Matt Calvert practiced for a second straight day Thursday, showing no signs that the illness was still affecting him. He missed the previous two games while feeling under the weather.

Jackets' Calvert (Illness) Practices Wednesday

News: Matt Calvert (illness) returned to the ice for practice Wednesday.
Analysis: Matt Calvert missed the previous two games due to an illness, but his return to practice Wednesday gives hope that he will rejoin the lineup for Friday's game against the Blues. However, his status should clear up a bit more over the next few days.

Blue Jackets' Calvert Misses Morning Skate

News: Matt Calvert (illness), who is considered unlikely to play in Tuesday's game against Arizona, did not participate in the morning skate, the Columbus Dispatch's Shawn Mitchell reports.
Analysis: With another sign hinting at an absence, Matt Calvert is a long shot to suit up Tuesday night. He's been dealing with a sinus infection for the past few weeks, and he recently indicated that the issue has become surprisingly troublesome.

Jackets' Calvert (Illness) Unlikely For Tuesday

News: Coach Todd Richards indicated that Matt Calvert (illness) is unlikely for Tuesday's game against the Coyotes.
Analysis: Matt Calvert's sinus infection forced him to miss Saturday's contest with the Lightning, and it appears that will more than likely carry over to Tuesday as well. His official status should be updated at some point before the opening faceoff, but consider him doubtful at this point.

Jackets' Calvert (Illness) Misses Practice Monday

News: Matt Calvert (illness) was not on the ice for practice Monday, Shawn Mitchell of The Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Matt Calvert missed Saturday's contest with the Lightning due to a sinus infection, and it appears he still hasn't fully recovered from the illness. Tuesday morning's skate should shed a bit more light on his status heading into the tilt with the Coyotes, unless the team provides an update before then.

Jackets' Calvert (Illness) Out Saturday

News: Matt Calvert (illness) will not play Saturday against the Lightning.
Analysis: Matt Calvert revealed Wednesday that he's been battling a sinus infection for several weeks, and though the issue hadn't cost him any time previously, it has clearly been affecting his performance. Consider Calvert day-to-day until more information becomes available.

Jackets' Calvert Battling Sinus Infection

News: Matt Calvert has been playing through a sinus infection for the last couple of weeks, the Columbus Dispatch reports. "I've never had it like this before," Calvert said.
Analysis: After missing practice on Monday, Matt Calvert ended up taking his regular shift during Tuesday's win over the Capitals and finished with no points and a minus-2 rating. In fact, aside from a two-goal game against the Bruins on January 13, he's been mired in an awful stretch of play while he battles through the sinus issue. Until he gets healthy, keep Calvert far away from your active roster.

Jackets' Calvert Nets Two Including Winner

News: Matt Calvert scored the go-ahead goal with 3:03 left in the third period and added an empty-net goal in Columbus' 3-1 win over Boston on Saturday night.
Analysis: His fantasy contributions are minimal -- he has just 12 points, including six goals, in 34 games this season. He's clutch on the ice, though, as he's one of those guys you can trust to help preserve a lead late in the game.

Calvert Good To Go For Columbus

News: Matt Calvert (illness) will play Friday against the Rangers.
Analysis: Matt Calvert was listed as questionable Friday, but he's good to go for the game. The left winger has recorded 10 points in 32 games for the Blue Jackets to date.

Jackets' Calvert (Illness) Questionable For Friday

News: Matt Calvert (illness) is questionable to play Friday against the Rangers, Shawn Mitchell of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: The illness prevented Matt Calvert from taking part in the Blue Jackets' morning skate, but the team hasn't ruled him out from playing later in the evening. If he fails to make enough gains in his recovery in the afternoon, Calvert will be replaced in the lineup by the newly recalled Josh Anderson.

Jackets' Calvert Nabs Two Points Saturday

News: Matt Calvert contributed a goal, assist and five hits in Saturday's 6-2 win over the Bruins.
Analysis: Matt Calvert was honored as the game's third star after capping a four-goal second period for the Jackets with an unassisted tally in the final minute. He's notched four points over his last four games, but that might be the extent of the hot streak for the 25-year-old, who hasn't proven to be a high-volume scorer over parts of five NHL seasons.

Blue Jackets Activate Calvert From Injured Reserve

News: The Blue Jackets activated Matt Calvert (upper body) from injured reserve Tuesday, Shawn Mitchell of The Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Matt Calvert is set to return to action after missing over a week with his upper body injury. He will not be in the lineup for Tuesday's game, but he saw regular action prior to suffering the setback, so it seems he has a decent chance to return for the Blue Jackets' next game Friday.

Blue Jackets' Calvert Healthy, But Remains On IR

News: Matt Calvert (upper body) is healthy, but will not return Tuesday against the Red Wings.
Analysis: The Blue Jackets have won two straight games, so head coach Todd Richards will stick with the same lineup Tuesday night and Matt Calvert will spend another game on injured reserve. However, he could be activated before Friday's game.

Jackets' Calvert Practices

News: Matt Calvert (upper body) practiced with the team Monday, Shawn Mitchell of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Matt Calvert is still listed on the IR list, but hasn't played since Nov. 7, so he's eligible to be activated at any time. There's a chance he'll be ready to return Tuesday against the Red Wings, but we likely won't know until closer to game time.

Jackets Place Calvert On IR

News: Matt Calvert (upper body) was placed on injured reserve retroactive to Nov. 7, Shawn Mitchell of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Since Matt Calvert's retroactive date is from over a week earlier, he'll be eligible to return to action as soon as the Blue Jackets deem him fit to play. Calvert was a participant in Saturday's optional practice and looks like he'll be targeting a return to the lineup Tuesday versus the Red Wings. By moving Calvert to IR temporarily, the Blue Jackets were able to activate Artem Anisimov (concussion) in advance of Saturday's game against San Jose.

Jackets' Calvert Skates Saturday

News: Matt Calvert (upper body) participated in Saturday's optional practice.
Analysis: Though Matt Calvert has been ruled out from playing Saturday against the Sharks -- the fourth straight game he'll have missed -- his return to practice suggests he's on track to return Tuesday against the Red Wings. The Blue Jackets will likely need to see Calvert take full contact before clearing him to slot back into the lineup.

Blue Jackets' Calvert Out Friday And Saturday

News: Matt Calvert (upper body), who was already ruled out for Friday's game, will not play Saturday either, Aaron Portzline of The Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Matt Calvert is apparently close to returning, but he will not play in either of the Blue Jackets' games this weekend. Calvert's next opportunity to play will come Tuesday against the Red Wings.

Jackets' Calvert To Miss Third Straight

News: Matt Calvert (upper body) will not play Friday against the Flyers, Shawn Mitchell of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Matt Calvert will sit out his third straight game after he was unable to resume practicing Thursday. He continues to skate on his own, however, which will perhaps make him an option when the Blue Jackets return home Saturday for a game against the Sharks.
