Analysis: The blueliner also skated to a plus-3 rating, bringing him up to an impressive plus-16 this year. Combined with his 38 points, 24 PIM and 127 SOG in 55 games from the back end, John Carlson has easily been one of the top-15 or top-20 best rearguards in the NHL this season.

Caps' Carlson Breaks Slump With Goal

News: John Carlson tallied his sixth goal of the season in Friday's shootout win over the Ducks.
Analysis: John Carlson had been stuck in a five-game point drought entering play Friday, but it wasn't as though he totally disappeared, as he compiled 15 shots on goal during that time. He finally managed to break through Friday, reasserting his standing as one of the NHL's top fantasy blueliners. He's just one goal or assist shy of matching the career-best mark of 37 points he established in 2010-11 and 2013-14.

News: John Carlson scored the game-winning goal Saturday in a 3-1 victory over the Red Wings. It was his first goal in 17 games, but ninth point in his last 10 games.
Analysis: Don't look now, but John Carlson sits fourth in NHL scoring from the blue line with 31 points -- he's behind only Kevin Shattenkirk, Mark Giordano and Brent Burns on that list. He's an automatic play.

News: John Carlson picked up two assists in Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Maple Leafs.

Two-Assist Night For Caps' Carlson

News: John Carlson chipped in helpers on both of Washington's goals Tuesday in a 4-2 loss to the Rangers.
Analysis: One came at even strength, and the other off Alex Ovechkin's stick on a power play. John Carlson continues to rattle off helpers with regularity, having collected eight in the last nine games now. Going back a bit further, he owns a sparkling 14 points over his last 13 contests. He's rapidly developing into one of the league's most productive defensemen.

Caps' Carlson: 11 Points In Last 10 Games

News: John Carlson picked up two assists in Saturday's win over New Jersey. He has 11 points, including nine assists, in his last 10 games.
Analysis: He's having an outstanding season -- 24 points, including 20 assists, in 31 games will do that for a guy. Make sure he's active every time the Caps are on the ice. You don't want to miss out on his run.

Carlson Carries Caps' Offense In Loss

News: The Capitals took a 4-3 loss to Vancouver on Tuesday, but it was no fault of John Carlson's, as he scored two goals on two shots, added an assist and went plus-3.
Analysis: He was on the ice for 22:28, but it was those 37-plus minutes that John Carlson wasn't out there that proved troublesome for Washington. Carlson's got a three-game point streak going, and he's been progressively more productive in each successive game -- one point on Friday, two points Saturday and now three. Can he put up four points Thursday in Carolina? Now that would be amazing.

Caps' Carlson: Two Assists And Career Pace

News: John Carlson set up both Washington goals in a 6-2 loss to Toronto on Saturday night.
Analysis: He has three helpers in his last two games, but it has been 12 games (and counting) since he tickled the twine. He delivered 10 goals last season, but he's behind that particular pace right now. But his overall output is career-worthy, particularly if he can keep up the pace. Use with confidence.

Caps' Carlson Bags Two Assists In Win

News: John Carlson registered a pair of assists in Saturday's win over Carolina.
Analysis: John Carlson has been remarkably steady this season, producing two goals and 11 points in 14 games. He has recorded at least one point in five of his last six games and is currently the fifth highest-scoring defenseman in the NHL Keep him rolling.

Caps' Carlson Tallies Assist In Loss

News: John Carlson picked up an assist in Tuesday's 4-3 overtime loss to the Flames.
Analysis: It was John Carlson's seventh assist of the year, and it extended his point streak to four consecutive games. He only has two goals on the season, but he's been firing off more shots of late so those should come eventually. Even still, he's a dependable option on the blue line.

Caps' Carlson Nabs Another Assist Saturday

News: John Carlson captured an assist in Saturday's loss against the Lightning.
Analysis: John Carlson's six assists put him in the league's top 20 among defensemen in the category, but he's found the net just once in his 10 games this season. A substandard 3.8 shooting percentage probably bears some responsibility for that, so expect him to nab a few more tallies once his shooting rate normalizes closer his career 5.2 percent mark.

Two More Assists For Caps' Carlson

News: John Carlson dished out two assists but finished with a minus-4 rating in Tuesday's shootout loss to the Sharks.
Analysis: John Carlson has now delivered back-to-back two-assist games for the Capitals, doing well to build off the second-half surge he set in motion last season. Carlson's plus/minus rating shouldn't normally see the wide fluctuation it noticed Tuesday, making him a fairly dependable fantasy option overall from the blue line.

Caps' Carlson Registers Two Assists Saturday

News: John Carlson tallied two assists in Saturday's 4-0 win over the Bruins.
Analysis: Power-play stalwart Alex Ovechkin finished off John Carlson's pass from the point for the game's first goal, while Carlson also received credit for a secondary helper on Joel Ward's third-period tally that put the finishing touches on the shutout victory. Carlson has played superbly since joining Team USA for the Olympics in Sochi last February, and at age 24, could be primed for a career season.

Caps' Carlson Assisting, Not Scoring

News: John Carlson grabbed two assists in Tuesday's win over the Blues, but remains without a goal since way back on Feb. 2.
Analysis: John Carlson has 10 goals on the year, which is solid even if he hasn't scored one in more than two months. And, hey, he does have a very fantasy-relevant 13 assists in his last 20 games. Despite a total of 36 points that doesn't light anyone's hair on fire, Carlson's career-high 205 shots so far this season point to significant offensive development -- even if it hasn't necessarily been rewarded. You might turn a neat profit on him in next year's drafts.

Caps' Carlson Chips In

News: John Carlson notched an assist in Friday's 4-3 win over Vancouver, giving him three helpers in the last four games.
Analysis: John Carlson has been playing solid hockey since returning from Sochi and he's been active on the scoresheet for the Caps. All three of his recent assists have come on the power play, as have more than half of his season's 16 points. The end of the season is looking like it will be slightly more productive than the beginning of the year for Carlson, who has a shot at challenging his career best of 37 points.

Caps' Carlson Contributes Two Helpers

News: John Carlson dished out a pair of assists -- one on the power play -- in Thursday's 5-4 win over Florida.
Analysis: Following a solid Olympic appearance with Team USA, John Carlson ended a three-game NHL scoreless slump with this nice evening. He's been an inconsistent offensive contributor, but fantasy owners can't complain too much about those 10 goals and 11 power-play points.

Caps' Carlson Gets Two Points For U.S. In Opener

News: John Carlson had a goal and assist in the United States' 7-1 victory over Slovakia on Thursday in the Olympic opener.
Analysis: John Carlson kicked off the scoring for the United States with the lone goal of the first period and then capped the onslaught with an assist on the team's final goal of the game. The Capitals defenseman has ran hot and cold all season, but if he can stay consistent throughout the tournament, he'll provide another dimension to an already formidable attack.

Goal, Assist For Caps' Carlson On Sunday

News: John Carlson contributed a goal and an assist in Sunday's win over the Red Wings.
Analysis: Both scores came on the power play for John Carlson, who has supplied six points over his last five games. The U.S. Olympian has shown the ability to rack up points at a decent rate before and is worth a look in just about any format while he remains hot.

Caps' Carlson Shows Sign Of Life

News: John Carlson scored Washington's only goal in Friday's 5-1 loss to Columbus, his first goal since December 20. His eight goals are among league leaders for defensemen in that particular category.
Analysis: John Carlson has been one of the more disappointing players in terms of offensive production, but his all-around efforts this season have earned him a spot on the US Olympic team. Carlson has two 30-plus point seasons to his name and is a good candidate to bounce back in the season's second half.

Caps' Carlson Failing To Contribute Offensively

News: John Carlson extended his current pointless streak to four games Thursday against the Hurricanes. He has just 15 points (7G, 8A) in 41 games so far this season.
Analysis: Fantasy owners must be scratching their heads at how a guy like John Carlson, who averages over 24 minutes per night playing on one of the highest-scoring teams in the league, can struggle to hit the scoresheet as much as he does. The one thing you can say about Carlson is he's durable - he hasn't missed a game since he became full-time player back in 2010-11; however he has not cracked the 40-point mark in the past three seasons, and isn't threatening to do it this year, either. For a guy who plays with the likes of Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, that's bordering on unforgivable.

Carlson Keeps Producing For Caps

News: John Carlson notched an assist on Washington's tying goal in Friday's shootout win over Detroit, giving him four points in the last four games.
Analysis: John Carlson has erased a slow start with strong performances the last two weeks, grabbing seven of his season's eight points over that stretch. Carlson is in a great situation considering the stable of forwards to whom he passes the puck and should see his name on the scoresheet semi-regularly.

Caps' Carlson Picks Up Two Points

News: John Carlson scored in the second period and assisted on Alex Ovechkin's OT winner against the Jackets on Tuesday.
Analysis: With just seven points on the season, John Carlson doesn't look like an overly enticing fantasy option right off, but he's actually got four goals and an assist in his last six outings -- very fantasy-relevant stuff from the blue line. Furthermore, Carlson's been putting the puck on net with consistency of late. It's a good formula, and it makes him an intriguing fantasy pickup.
