Caps' Carlson Assisting, Not Scoring

News: John Carlson grabbed two assists in Tuesday's win over the Blues, but remains without a goal since way back on Feb. 2.
Analysis: John Carlson has 10 goals on the year, which is solid even if he hasn't scored one in more than two months. And, hey, he does have a very fantasy-relevant 13 assists in his last 20 games. Despite a total of 36 points that doesn't light anyone's hair on fire, Carlson's career-high 205 shots so far this season point to significant offensive development -- even if it hasn't necessarily been rewarded. You might turn a neat profit on him in next year's drafts.

Caps' Carlson Chips In

News: John Carlson notched an assist in Friday's 4-3 win over Vancouver, giving him three helpers in the last four games.
Analysis: John Carlson has been playing solid hockey since returning from Sochi and he's been active on the scoresheet for the Caps. All three of his recent assists have come on the power play, as have more than half of his season's 16 points. The end of the season is looking like it will be slightly more productive than the beginning of the year for Carlson, who has a shot at challenging his career best of 37 points.

Caps' Carlson Contributes Two Helpers

News: John Carlson dished out a pair of assists -- one on the power play -- in Thursday's 5-4 win over Florida.
Analysis: Following a solid Olympic appearance with Team USA, John Carlson ended a three-game NHL scoreless slump with this nice evening. He's been an inconsistent offensive contributor, but fantasy owners can't complain too much about those 10 goals and 11 power-play points.

Caps' Carlson Gets Two Points For U.S. In Opener

News: John Carlson had a goal and assist in the United States' 7-1 victory over Slovakia on Thursday in the Olympic opener.
Analysis: John Carlson kicked off the scoring for the United States with the lone goal of the first period and then capped the onslaught with an assist on the team's final goal of the game. The Capitals defenseman has ran hot and cold all season, but if he can stay consistent throughout the tournament, he'll provide another dimension to an already formidable attack.

Goal, Assist For Caps' Carlson On Sunday

News: John Carlson contributed a goal and an assist in Sunday's win over the Red Wings.
Analysis: Both scores came on the power play for John Carlson, who has supplied six points over his last five games. The U.S. Olympian has shown the ability to rack up points at a decent rate before and is worth a look in just about any format while he remains hot.

Caps' Carlson Shows Sign Of Life

News: John Carlson scored Washington's only goal in Friday's 5-1 loss to Columbus, his first goal since December 20. His eight goals are among league leaders for defensemen in that particular category.
Analysis: John Carlson has been one of the more disappointing players in terms of offensive production, but his all-around efforts this season have earned him a spot on the US Olympic team. Carlson has two 30-plus point seasons to his name and is a good candidate to bounce back in the season's second half.

Caps' Carlson Failing To Contribute Offensively

News: John Carlson extended his current pointless streak to four games Thursday against the Hurricanes. He has just 15 points (7G, 8A) in 41 games so far this season.
Analysis: Fantasy owners must be scratching their heads at how a guy like John Carlson, who averages over 24 minutes per night playing on one of the highest-scoring teams in the league, can struggle to hit the scoresheet as much as he does. The one thing you can say about Carlson is he's durable - he hasn't missed a game since he became full-time player back in 2010-11; however he has not cracked the 40-point mark in the past three seasons, and isn't threatening to do it this year, either. For a guy who plays with the likes of Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, that's bordering on unforgivable.

Carlson Keeps Producing For Caps

News: John Carlson notched an assist on Washington's tying goal in Friday's shootout win over Detroit, giving him four points in the last four games.
Analysis: John Carlson has erased a slow start with strong performances the last two weeks, grabbing seven of his season's eight points over that stretch. Carlson is in a great situation considering the stable of forwards to whom he passes the puck and should see his name on the scoresheet semi-regularly.

Caps' Carlson Picks Up Two Points

News: John Carlson scored in the second period and assisted on Alex Ovechkin's OT winner against the Jackets on Tuesday.
Analysis: With just seven points on the season, John Carlson doesn't look like an overly enticing fantasy option right off, but he's actually got four goals and an assist in his last six outings -- very fantasy-relevant stuff from the blue line. Furthermore, Carlson's been putting the puck on net with consistency of late. It's a good formula, and it makes him an intriguing fantasy pickup.

Caps' Carlson Nets First Goal Of Season

News: John Carlson shook the monkey off his back Saturday when he potted his first goal of the season.
Analysis: It's just his third point of the season, but his potential is much, much higher. Stay patient, particularly in keeper formats.

Caps' Carlson Off To Slow Start

News: John Carlson has just one point on one assist in eight games this season.
Analysis: John Carlson had 16 points in a strike-shortened 48 games last season. With this slow start, he'll have to work hard to match his career high of 37 points, set back in 2010-2011.

Caps' Carlson Scores in Win

News: John Carlson scored a power-play goal in the first period of a 4-3 win over the Flyers on Monday.
Analysis: John Carlson notched 22 points on six goals and 16 assists last season. He signed a six-year extension in September 2012 and has played in every game in each of the last three seasons. He shouldn't be relied on for goals, but it is reasonable to expect him to add around 25-30 assists this season.

Caps' Carlson Ends Points Drought

News: John Carlson posted his first assist in six games, contributing to one of Washington's three goals in Friday's win of the Flyers.
Analysis: John Carlson has been off to a frustrating slow start for owners that burned a middle round pick on the budding blue liner. He has the tools and the teammates to be a consistent point producer, but Washington is a team still searching for their identity. Carlson's invisibility for most of the season could prompt his owners to want to jettison him for less than market value. Take advantage if you can.

Caps Sign Carlson To Extension

News: John Carlson signed a six-year, $23.8 million extension with the Capitals on Friday, according to Craig Custance of ESPN.com.
Analysis: The 22-year old defenseman has played in every game both of the last two seasons for the Caps. John Carlson totaled nine goals and 23 assists last season and added 22 penalty minutes. Carlson will likely return as a top defender for the Caps as they look to take the next step in the postseason.

Caps Give Carlson Qualifying Offer

News: John Carlson has been given a qualifying offer of $826,875 by the Capitals.
Analysis: John Carlson is eligible for arbitration after next season and is likely to try to negotiate a two-year deal this offseason. He is unlikely to hit a major payday on the open market and has stated he is happy in Washington, as much as a statement like that is worth.

Caps' Carlson Continues Strong Playoffs

News: John Carlson scored one of Washington's two goals in Monday's Game 5 overtime loss to the Rangers in their Eastern Conference semifinals.
Analysis: John Carlson has been one of the Caps' best players this postseason and he fired home what should have been the game's winning goal before Washington surrendered the lead. Carlson has been everything Mike Green should be and he will definitely be on radar screens for this fall's drafts.

Struggles Continue For Caps' Carlson

News: John Carlson was on the ice for all four Tampa goals on Tuesday night.
Analysis: He has struggled under the heavy workload of late and has three assists and a minus-11 rating in his last 21 games. He's still getting plenty of blocks but bench him in leagues that count plus-minus -- the value just isn't there right now.

Caps' Carlson Has Another Three Point Night Wednesday

News: John Carlson picked up two assists and added an empty-net goal Wednesday night to help Washington to a 5-3 win over Ottawa. It was his second straight three-point game.
Analysis: Seven of John Carlson's 19 points this year have come in his last three games. He's playing a lot of minutes under new head coach Dale Hunter and Wednesday night was no exception as he saw over 27 minutes of icetime. With Mike Green (concussion) out indefinitely, Carlson is now Washington's go-to guy on the blueline.

Carlson Sparks Caps' Comeback

News: John Carlson grabbed his third goal of the season in Monday's 4-3 win over Phoenix, giving him three points in the last five games.
Analysis: John Carlson is one of the players benefitting the most while Mike Green deals with a lower body injury. Carlson has a solid nine points in 19 games but the majority of those points have come in the last month. He's been the Caps' most productive defender of late with Dennis Wideman falling off a bit. Play Carlson with confidence until you see his opportunities decreasing.

Capitals' Carlson With Assist In Saturday's Win

News: John Carlson registered one point and a plus-2 in the Capitals' 7-1 blowout win against Detroit Saturday.
Analysis: John Carlson has a plus-5 on the season and has been solid defensively through seven games. He has yet to register a plus/minus in the red, but that's not shocking considering the Capitals' 7-0 start. The blueliner is seeing serious minutes, averaging close to 20 a game. Play Carlson with confidence and hope the Caps can keep up their winning ways.

Carlson Scores in Caps' Loss

News: Carlson scored for the second-consecutive game, posting a late goal in Wednesday's 5-3, Game 4 season-ending loss.
Analysis: Carlson had just three points in nine playoff games but remains one of the team's brightest defensive prospects with offensive potential. The Caps have underperformed in years past, so Carlson's just following the company line.
