Sabres' Hodgson Leads Canada With Six Goals

News: Cody Hodgson finished the World Championships with six goals and eight points in seven games as Canada was eliminated in the quarterfinal by Finland on Thursday.
Analysis: Cody Hodgson's six goals -- including a hat trick against Denmark -- paced Team Canada and tied Joel Ward for the team lead. Playing left wing on a line with center Nazem Kadri and right winger Troy Brouwer, Hodgson was an offensive force. He's considered a below-average skater, but playing on the wing helps minimize the area he has to cover, which allows him to join the rush in better position. Hodgson's performance is encouraging, both in terms of his production and his ability to adapt to a new position. He'll most likely continue to be a left winger for the Sabres next season.

Sabres' Hodgson Scores Two To Lead Canada

News: Cody Hodgson scored two goals as Canada routed Italy 6-1 Friday at the World Championships.
Analysis: That's five goals in two games for Cody Hodgson, who came off a hat-trick performance against Denmark. He scored just 20 goals for the Sabres this past season. When Hodgson is at his best, he can be one of the best playmakers on the ice, but injuries and inconsistency have hurt in the past few seasons. His confidence should be high right now as Canada advances in the tournament.

Sabres' Hodgson Nets Hat Trick Against Denmark

News: Cody Hodgson scored a hat trick to lead Team Canada past Team Denmark in a 6-1 win Thursday at the World Championships, reports The Globe and Mail.
Analysis: Cody Hodgson's skill was on full display against the Danes as the 24-year-old center continues to improve game-by-game at the World Championships. Expectations were high for Hodgson heading into the season, but inconsistent play and injuries limited him to just 44 points in 72 games. His strong performances, despite a slow start to the tournament, bodes well for Hodgson and the Sabres. The 10th overall pick will be leaned on heavily again next season, and getting his confidence back and staying healthy should push him to a higher level.

Sabres' Hodgson Scores Winner At Worlds

News: Cody Hodgson scored the game-winning goal in Team Canada's 4-1 over Team Slovakia on Saturday at the World Championships.
Analysis: With an assist in the previous game, Cody Hodgson is off to a good start with points in Canada's first two games at the World Championships. Hodgson also registered three shots on goal playing alongside Nazem Kadri once again, and the two seem to be developing some chemistry. The Sabres are hoping that an injury-free tournament can boost Hodgson's confidence as the 24-year-old looks to lead the Sabres offense next year. Canada plays the Czech Republic on Monday.

Sabres' Hodgson Collects Assist In Loss To France

News: Cody Hodgson assisted on Canada's first goal on the power play though they were eventually upset by the French in a 3-2 shootout loss at the World Championships on Friday.
Analysis: Though there was talk that Cody Hodgson would move back to center for the World Championships, he started on center Nazem Kadri's left wing and opposite right winger Troy Brouwer. Canada couldn't generate much in even strength play, but Hodgson found the scoresheet by setting up Brayden Schenn's power-play goal. Perhaps playing with better teammates will bring out the best from Hodgson, who managed just 44 points in 72 games this season. He's seen as a big piece of the Sabres moving forward but the former 10th overall pick has not lived up to expectations.

Sabres' Hodgson Named To Canada For Worlds

News: The Sabres' leading scorer, Cody Hodgson was named to Team Canada on Thursday for the upcoming World Championships.
Analysis: This is the first time Cody Hodgson has been named to Team Canada for the World Championships. Other than the presence of a few veterans, Team Canada will have a very young squad. Although Hodgson was moved to the left wing on the Sabres late in the season, there's a possibility he will return to center for Canada. He faces tough competition, however, with Kyle Turris, Sean Monahan, Nazem Kadri and Mark Scheifele also named to the squad.

Hodgson Finishes Season As Sabres' Scoring Leader

News: Cody Hodgson missed 10 games this season, but still managed 44 points, good enough to be the Sabres' top scorer.
Analysis: The 24-year-old set a new career high, but the overall production was rather disappointing. He scored 34 points in 48 games the previous season, but only managed to improve his point total by 10 despite playing in 24 more games. He also became even more of a defensive liability, with a minus-26 rating on the year. Near the end of the season, the right-handed Cody Hodgson was moved the left wing, where head coach Ted Nolan suspects he'll be more effective -- he's faster along the wall than in the center of the ice. Hodgson has played 211 NHL games so far, and has shown flashes of talent, but is handicapped by his poor skating. However, he'll still get his opportunities next year as one of the Sabres' top forwards.

Hodgson Scores Lone Sabres' Goal In Loss

News: Cody Hodgson scored the lone Sabres' goal in a 4-1 loss to the Bruins on Saturday.
Analysis: With the tally, Cody Hodgson hit the 20-goal mark for the first time in his career. He is finishing the season strong, recording four goals and four assists in his last eight games. On the season, Hodgson has amassed 44 points in 71 games, combined with a disastrous minus-26 rating.

Sabres' Hodgson Flourishing At Left Wing

News: Cody Hodgson assisted on both of Zemgus Girgensons' goals Tuesday, representing the entirety of the Buffalo offense in a 4-2 loss to the Red Wings.
Analysis: That's consecutive two-point games for Cody Hodgson and seven points in his last six contests. The conversion to left wing seems to be going well; almost all that production has come since he was moved off the center position.

Sabres' Hodgson Drives Offense In Loss

News: Cody Hodgson provided a goal and an assist in Sunday's loss to the Flyers.
Analysis: The Sabres have dropped four of their last five games, but that can't be pinned on Cody Hodgson. The 24-year-old has contributed three goals and two assists during that span.

Sabres' Hodgson Welcomes Move To Left Wing

News: A center throughout his career, Cody Hodgson was moved to the left wing Tuesday against New Jersey and may stay there for the foreseeable future, reports the Olean Times Herald.
Analysis: Cody Hodgson was never fast enough to cover enough ice playing center and was never good at winning faceoffs, making him a defensive liability most nights. Moving him to the left wing puts a little less pressure on him to play defense and, as a right-hand shot, playing on his off-wing affords him some interesting options on offense. If he can't beat defenders to the outside, Hodgson can turn towards the center of the ice on his forehand, making it easier to shoot or pass. Tyler Ennis and Zemgus Girgensons are seen as the team's two centers going forward.

Buffalo's Hodgson Nets 17th Goal Of Season

News: Cody Hodgson scored his 17th goal of the season in Saturday's OT loss to Tampa Bay.
Analysis: The goal came on a nice tip play. He started the game at wing again, but he did take 13 faceoffs. His future may lie at wing -- it gives him some relief from the defensive responsibilities of center ice. And that should increase his offensive output. He may be a buy low in keeper formats.

Sabres' Hodgson Back At Center

News: After a short stint playing on the wing, Cody Hodgson moved back to center at Wednesday's practice.
Analysis: Moving Cody Hodgson to the wing was understandable because he isn't very good at winning faceoffs and a liability on defense with his poor skating and inconsistent efforts. However, his playmaking abilities are best served at the center of the ice, not to mention the Sabres' lack depth down the middle. Hodgson's value in fantasy increases when he plays center, but he's having a tough season along with the rest of the team. It's hard to see Hodgson catching fire this late in the season though he has 69 points in 107 games over the past two seasons with Buffalo. He is also minus-36 in that span.

Two Points For Sabres' Hodgson

News: Cody Hodgson scored a goal, contributed an assist and went plus-2 in Thursday's win over Tampa Bay.
Analysis: That's four points in the last four games for Cody Hodgson, who's looked very good since the post-Olympic resumption of play. Unfortunately, you can't count on him to put up consistent positive ratings for an inconsistent Buffalo team -- even if the Sabres happen to be on a nice run right now.

Hodgson Opens Buffalo Scoring

News: Cody Hodgson scored the opening goal in Buffalo's 4-2 win over San Jose on Friday, giving him a point in each of the last two games.
Analysis: Cody Hodgson is one of Buffalo's top offensive players and should challenge 45 points this season. He's still a young player with a boatload of talent, so don't be surprised to see him remain in Buffalo during what many believe will be a fire sale.

Sabres' Hodgson Nets Two Goals

News: Cody Hodgson scored two goals in Tuesday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Capitals.
Analysis: If you can deal with the fact that Cody Hodgson is going to have more than a few games like Monday's (zero points, minus-3), there's plenty of fantasy value to be found here, as the young centerman has 10 points -- including six goals -- in nine games since returning from a finger injury.

Sabres' Hodgson Has Eight Points In Last Seven

News: Cody Hodgson had a goal and assist in Saturday's win over Columbus. He has eight points, including four goals, in seven games since his return from injury.
Analysis: His presence on the ice seems to allow the Sabres to spread out some of the offense and that ultimately means all of the Sabres get an uptick in value. Cody Hodgson is a talented center who now has 27 points in 40 games. He's one of the building blocks for future success. And right now, he's worthy in current formats, too. Nice.

Sabres' Hodgson Gathers Two Points

News: Cody Hodgson scored a goal, contributed an assist and went plus-1 in Tuesday's loss to the Flyers.

Sabres' Hodgson Picks Up Assist In Return

News: Cody Hodgson assisted on Buffalo lone goal Sunday against the Capitals.
Analysis: This was Cody Hodgson's first game since December 19 due to injury, but now he is back. However, he still only has 20 points in 34 games, and is a minus-10.

Sabres Activate Hodgson

News: Cody Hodgson (finger) was activated from IR on Saturday.
Analysis: As expected, Cody Hodgson will make his return to the lineup Sunday after missing the past nine games with the injured finger. Although he hasn't taken the step forward many hoped he would this season, Hodgson has still been one of the more productive scorers for the Sabres, registering 19 points in 33 games.

Sabres' Hodgson To Return Sunday

News: After suffering a finger injury from blocking a shot, Cody Hodgson will return Sunday against Washington, reports Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald.
Analysis: The Sabres get their top center back, though Cody Hodgson isn't expected to reverse the team's fortunes anytime soon. Despite missing nine games, Hodgson is still the Sabres' leading scorer with 19 points in 33 games. The 23-year-old pivot has a promising future, but the 2013-14 season will be one to forget. Hodgson should only be considered in very deep, mixed format leagues.

Sabres' Hodgson Practices

News: Cody Hodgson (finger) practiced Wednesday in a red non-contact jersey, Bill Hoppe of the Times Herald reports.
Analysis: Cody Hodgson is apparently the closest to returning of all the Sabres' injured players, and Wednesday was another step in that direction. He'll need to prove he can play with contact before he suits up again, but the center appears to be on track to return shortly.

Sabres' Hodgson Close To Return

News: Interim head coach Ted Nolan said Cody Hodgson (finger) is closest to returning among the Sabres' injured players.
Analysis: Nolan clarified later that Cody Hodgson was the closest to returning after Ville Leino (lower body), who has already been ruled out of Tuesday's game against Carolina. Hodgson still has a cast on his thumb, but could make his return Thursday against Florida. Either way, he should be returning soon, most likely within the next two weeks. Hodgson shouldn't have any trouble reclaiming his old spot on the top scoring line, though his linemates are still to be determined.

Sabres' Hodgson Placed On IR

News: Cody Hodgson (finger) was place on injured reserve Wednesday, WGR 550 Sports Radio's Brian Koziol reports.
Analysis: The move is simply procedural, as Cody Hodgson has already been out for 10 days. A specific timetable hasn't been announced, but he's expected to return some time in January

Sabres' Hodgson Has Broken Finger

News: Cody Hodgson's injury, which will keep him sidelined until January, is a broken finger, reports WGR 550 Sports Radio.
Analysis: The Sabres were already short on centers, and Cody Hodgson is their number one guy. Believe or not, the league's worst offense is just about to get less potent. It comes at a bad time with Buffalo just getting into a groove with eight goals in the past two games. The Sabres will have to get creative with their lineup with Cody McCormick (broken finger) out as well. Expect Tyler Ennis to take up the majority of Hodgson's offensive minutes. Hodgson was leading the team with 19 points in 33 games.
