Sabres' Hodgson Snaps 27-Game Drought

News: Cody Hodgson scored his third of the season and first in 27 games in a 4-2 win over Columbus on Tuesday.
Analysis: In a tough year for Cody Hodgson, the hockey gods decided to give him a small break, briefly casting a spell over Anton Forsberg, who misplayed a soft backhand and allowed the puck to trickle into the net. The goal was Hodgson's first since Dec. 13. The Sabres' leading scorer from last year still has time to finish the season strong, but until he strings together two good games don't count on it. Hodgson played just 10:26, but still six minutes higher than the 4:48 he logged against Nashville.

Hodgson Returns To Sabres Lineup Sunday

News: Cody Hodgson will play Sunday against Philadelphia after a two-game absence, reports the Olean Times Herald.
Analysis: A healthy scratch the past two games, Cody Hodgson returns to the lineup with Patrick Kaleta (lower-body) unavailable for Sunday's game. Hodgson has struggled mightily this season, with just two goals in 51 games. He'll skate on a line with center Matt Ellis and Johan Larsson, who was recalled from AHL Rochester. Hodgson needs a good performance to stay in head coach Ted Nolan's good graces. He'll get an extended look with the Sabres banged up, but if he doesn't perform well Nolan will be quick to yank him from the lineup.

Sabres Sit Hodgson Again

News: Cody Hodgson will be a healthy scratch Tuesday against Ottawa, reports The Buffalo News.
Analysis: After sitting against the Islanders, Tuesday will be Cody Hodgson's second straight game as a healthy scratch, and it doesn't look like he'll be back in the lineup anytime soon. Head coach Ted Nolan said he hoped Hodgson would be angry after getting scratched against his former team in Vancouver, but admitted that "every personality on the team is different" and that benching Hodgson may not have had the desired effect. The underachieving forward has a $4.25 million cap hit, but has been one of the league's worst players this year. He's a non-starter in fantasy.

Sabres' Hodgson Responds After Benching

News: Cody Hodgson notched an assist against Montreal on Tuesday, one game after being made a healthy scratch.
Analysis: If head coach Ted Nolan wanted to light a fire under Cody Hodgson's butt, scratching the former 10th overall pick against his former team certainly did the trick. He didn't get all of Nolan's confidence back, however, playing just 11:43. Hodgson's assist opened the scoring and marks his second point in four games and gives him eight points in 49 games on the year. It may be too little, too late for Hodgson to be a fantasy asset this year, though.

Sabres' Hodgson Confident Ahead Of Tuesday's Game

News: Cody Hodgson remains confident he can score in the NHL, reports The Buffalo News.
Analysis: "I still think I have it," Cody Hodgson told The Buffalo News. After sitting as a healthy scratch Friday against his former team in Vancouver, Hodgson will return to the lineup Tuesday against Montreal on the third line with Brian Flynn at center and Drew Stafford on the right wing. Head coach Ted Nolan wanted to "get messages across" to Hodgson and it remains to be seen if anything will come of it. Hodgson's effort level needs to improve. This is a little reminiscent of his time in Vancouver when then head coach Alain Vigneault implied to the media that he didn't think Hodgson was working hard enough to return from a back injury. Hodgson has seven points in 48 games and is of no fantasy value this season. His future with the Sabres is in doubt at the moment.

Sabres' Hodgson To Play Tuesday

News: Cody Hodgson, who was a healthy scratch Friday against the Canucks, will return to the lineup for Tuesday's game in Montreal.
Analysis: Cody Hodgson was on the third line at practice Sunday, skating on Brian Flynn's left wing opposite Drew Stafford. The former 10th overall pick has been a disaster this season with seven points in 48 games, with the low point sitting as a healthy scratch against his former team. He's not consistent enough and still far too slow on his feet. Andre Benoit, who dressed as the team's seventh defenseman against Vancouver, will likely sit. Hodgson is not a fantasy-relevant player this season.

Sabres Scratch Hodgson Friday

News: Cody Hodgson was a healthy scratch for Friday's game against Vancouver, Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: After consecutive games prior to the All-Star break with less than eight minutes played, Cody Hodgson opened the second half with a role that was right in line with his season averages on Tuesday and Thursday night in Calgary and Edmonton. With no injury being reported, it's clear that Hodgson has found his way into the dog house again. With seven points in 48 games along with a minus-21 rating, a change of scenery is seemingly on tap for the former 10th overall pick.

Sabres' Hodgson Benched Against Flyers

News: Cody Hodgson played just 50 seconds in the first period in Saturday's 4-3 loss to Philadelphia.
Analysis: Cody Hodgson and linemates Phil Varone and Drew Stafford barely played in the first period as head coach Ted Nolan decided to roll three lines. Hodgson played just 5:57 the whole game and has been held without a point in his past 11 games. He has just six points this season. Hodgson has been a disaster since signing an extension worth $25.5 million in 2013. He's difficult to trade because of his contract, which means the Sabres will need to find a way to get him going. It's unlikely they'll find the answer this season, though.

Sabres' Hodgson Stuck On Fourth Line

News: Cody Hodgson skated on a two-man fourth line at practice on Thursday, reports The Buffalo News.
Analysis: With 11 forwards, Cody Hodgson and Chris Stewart skated together as the team awaits a minor league call-up from AHL Rochester. Hodgson was benched for 28 minutes against the Jets after losing a battle along the wall and then losing a foot race against Mark Scheifele that led to a shorthanded goal. Never the fastest or swiftest skater, Hodgson is having trouble keeping up and no matter where head coach Ted Nolan plays him - either at center or left wing - the former 10th overall pick just can't seem to produce. He has just five points this season and has been an extreme disappointing since signing a $25.5 million extension in 2013. Even though he's young and talented, his lack of production forces Nolan to sit him, and his big contract makes him difficult to trade. Hodgson's slated to play Saturday but his leash will be short.

Sabres' Hodgson Not On Nolan's Good Side

News: Cody Hodgson seems to have landed in coach Ted Nolan's doghouse again, playing only 4:55 in Tuesday's loss to the Jets and not seeing the ice again after he lost a faceoff on a power play and got out-hustled for a shorthanded goal by Winnipeg's Mark Scheifele, The Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: Cody Hodgson is having a horrible season, and is one of the few Sabres who hasn't seen success in recent weeks as the team has turned its season around. He continues to play on a bottom line and might be in line for some more press box time, while his five points on the season is a gross underachievement compared to his six-year, $25.5 million salary.

Sabres' Hodgson Slated To Return Saturday

News: Cody Hodgson will return to the lineup Saturday against the Panthers.
Analysis: A healthy scratch for the first time this season Thursday, Cody Hodgson will replace Cody McCormick (lower body) on the Sabres' fourth line. With only three points in 28 games, Hodgson still has a ways to go in order to remove himself from coach Ted Nolan's doghouse.

Sabres' Hodgson To Be Healthy Scratch Thursday

News: Cody Hodgson will be a healthy scratch Thursday against the Flames.
Analysis: Coach Ted Nolan had previously threatened scratching the struggling Cody Hodgson multiple points earlier in the season, but instead opted to relegate the forward to one of the team's bottom two lines. It appears he might have reached his breaking point, however, as Hodgson will sit for the first time this season, as Chris Stewart reenters the lineup. Counted upon to be a top offensive contributor heading into the season, Hodgson has provided just one goal and two assists over 28 games.

Sabres' Hodgson Continues Cold Spell

News: Even though the Sabres scored six goals Saturday against Toronto in a 6-2 win, Cody Hodgson extended his pointless streak to 10 games.
Analysis: Head coach Ted Nolan is really spreading the minutes around lately, but Cody Hodgson has seen his role diminish prominently this season. After scoring 20 goals and 44 points in 72 games the previous season, he has just two points in 18 games. He's not a strong defensive player so when Hodgson doesn't score, he's not particularly effective. Nolan said he would scratch Hodgson if his game doesn't pick up soon, and that may happen sooner than later.

Sabres' Hodgson In Danger Of Losing Lineup Spot

News: Cody Hodgson was dropped to the fourth line at Wednesday's practice, John Vogl of the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: Coach Ted Nolan didn't hide his disappointment with Cody Hodgson's play so far this season, suggesting that the forward was "pretty close" to becoming a healthy scratch. Signed by the previous regime to a six-year, $25.5 million extension prior to last season, Hodgson was counted on to be a cornerstone player for the Sabres, but has faltered badly in that regard to date. He's accumulated just two points and attempted 11 shots over 10 games, yielding a minus-7 rating.

Sabres' Hodgson Ends Goalless Drought

News: Cody Hodgson notched his first goal of the season in a 2-1 win over San Jose on Saturday.
Analysis: It only took nine games, but Cody Hodgson finally lit the lamp after scoring 20 goals in 72 games last year. It was Hodgson's second point of the season after struggling early on, registering just nine shots in eight games. His lack of production is a big reason why the Sabres' offense has struggled. Hodgson was Buffalo's leading scorer last year with 44 points and should be leading the charge again this season. Moving to the left wing is supposed to open up his offensive game, but thus far it hasn't paid dividends. Still, the season is young and there's still lots of hockey to be played. Hodgson remains one of the few Sabres worth owning in deep fantasy leagues.

Sabres Move Hodgson Back To Center

News: Cody Hodgson will move back to center after opening the season at left wing, John Vogl of The Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: The Sabres were planning to use Cody Hodgson at left wing full-time this season, but he did not tally a point through the season's first three games, so head coach Ted Nolan wasted little scrapping the experiment in an effort to allow Hodgson to be more of a playmaker. He will likely center either the Sabres' second or third line.

Sabres' Hodgson Preparing For Move To Wing

News: Cody Hodgson will transition to a full-time role at left wing with the Sabres this season, Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: Cody Hodgson moved from center to wing late last season with the Sabres, but it wasn't until he thrived at the position for Team Canada in this summer's World Championships that the organization decided to make the role a permanent one. The 24-year-old was used alongside Chris Stewart and Mikhail Grigorenko during Sunday's preseason tilt, recording a team-high seven shots while assisting on a goal. Now that it seems he's found his niche for the Sabres, it wouldn't be surprising if Hodgson improved upon last season's outputs of 20 goals and 44 points.

Sabres' Hodgson Leads Canada With Six Goals

News: Cody Hodgson finished the World Championships with six goals and eight points in seven games as Canada was eliminated in the quarterfinal by Finland on Thursday.
Analysis: Cody Hodgson's six goals -- including a hat trick against Denmark -- paced Team Canada and tied Joel Ward for the team lead. Playing left wing on a line with center Nazem Kadri and right winger Troy Brouwer, Hodgson was an offensive force. He's considered a below-average skater, but playing on the wing helps minimize the area he has to cover, which allows him to join the rush in better position. Hodgson's performance is encouraging, both in terms of his production and his ability to adapt to a new position. He'll most likely continue to be a left winger for the Sabres next season.

Sabres' Hodgson Scores Two To Lead Canada

News: Cody Hodgson scored two goals as Canada routed Italy 6-1 Friday at the World Championships.
Analysis: That's five goals in two games for Cody Hodgson, who came off a hat-trick performance against Denmark. He scored just 20 goals for the Sabres this past season. When Hodgson is at his best, he can be one of the best playmakers on the ice, but injuries and inconsistency have hurt in the past few seasons. His confidence should be high right now as Canada advances in the tournament.

Sabres' Hodgson Nets Hat Trick Against Denmark

News: Cody Hodgson scored a hat trick to lead Team Canada past Team Denmark in a 6-1 win Thursday at the World Championships, reports The Globe and Mail.
Analysis: Cody Hodgson's skill was on full display against the Danes as the 24-year-old center continues to improve game-by-game at the World Championships. Expectations were high for Hodgson heading into the season, but inconsistent play and injuries limited him to just 44 points in 72 games. His strong performances, despite a slow start to the tournament, bodes well for Hodgson and the Sabres. The 10th overall pick will be leaned on heavily again next season, and getting his confidence back and staying healthy should push him to a higher level.

Sabres' Hodgson Scores Winner At Worlds

News: Cody Hodgson scored the game-winning goal in Team Canada's 4-1 over Team Slovakia on Saturday at the World Championships.
Analysis: With an assist in the previous game, Cody Hodgson is off to a good start with points in Canada's first two games at the World Championships. Hodgson also registered three shots on goal playing alongside Nazem Kadri once again, and the two seem to be developing some chemistry. The Sabres are hoping that an injury-free tournament can boost Hodgson's confidence as the 24-year-old looks to lead the Sabres offense next year. Canada plays the Czech Republic on Monday.

Sabres' Hodgson Collects Assist In Loss To France

News: Cody Hodgson assisted on Canada's first goal on the power play though they were eventually upset by the French in a 3-2 shootout loss at the World Championships on Friday.
Analysis: Though there was talk that Cody Hodgson would move back to center for the World Championships, he started on center Nazem Kadri's left wing and opposite right winger Troy Brouwer. Canada couldn't generate much in even strength play, but Hodgson found the scoresheet by setting up Brayden Schenn's power-play goal. Perhaps playing with better teammates will bring out the best from Hodgson, who managed just 44 points in 72 games this season. He's seen as a big piece of the Sabres moving forward but the former 10th overall pick has not lived up to expectations.

Sabres' Hodgson Named To Canada For Worlds

News: The Sabres' leading scorer, Cody Hodgson was named to Team Canada on Thursday for the upcoming World Championships.
Analysis: This is the first time Cody Hodgson has been named to Team Canada for the World Championships. Other than the presence of a few veterans, Team Canada will have a very young squad. Although Hodgson was moved to the left wing on the Sabres late in the season, there's a possibility he will return to center for Canada. He faces tough competition, however, with Kyle Turris, Sean Monahan, Nazem Kadri and Mark Scheifele also named to the squad.

Hodgson Finishes Season As Sabres' Scoring Leader

News: Cody Hodgson missed 10 games this season, but still managed 44 points, good enough to be the Sabres' top scorer.
Analysis: The 24-year-old set a new career high, but the overall production was rather disappointing. He scored 34 points in 48 games the previous season, but only managed to improve his point total by 10 despite playing in 24 more games. He also became even more of a defensive liability, with a minus-26 rating on the year. Near the end of the season, the right-handed Cody Hodgson was moved the left wing, where head coach Ted Nolan suspects he'll be more effective -- he's faster along the wall than in the center of the ice. Hodgson has played 211 NHL games so far, and has shown flashes of talent, but is handicapped by his poor skating. However, he'll still get his opportunities next year as one of the Sabres' top forwards.

Hodgson Scores Lone Sabres' Goal In Loss

News: Cody Hodgson scored the lone Sabres' goal in a 4-1 loss to the Bruins on Saturday.
Analysis: With the tally, Cody Hodgson hit the 20-goal mark for the first time in his career. He is finishing the season strong, recording four goals and four assists in his last eight games. On the season, Hodgson has amassed 44 points in 71 games, combined with a disastrous minus-26 rating.
