Isles Add Kulemin To Forward Ranks

News: Nikolai Kulemin signed a four-year, $16.75 million contract with the Islanders on Wednesday, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.
Analysis: The Islanders outbid the Penguins for the services of Nikolai Kulemin, who figures to slot in one either the second or third line for New York. He compiled nine goals and 11 assists over 70 games for the Leafs in 2013-14, adding 153 hits and 63 blocks on the defensive end.

Leafs' Kulemin: UFA Headed To Pens?

News: Nikolai Kulemin, who is an unrestricted free agent on July 1, could be headed to Pittsburgh, reports the Toronto Sun. He is good friends with Evgeni Malkin and they have played together on the same line in Russia.
Analysis: Malkin has long raved about Malkin's abilities, but those talents only really manifested themselves one season in Toronto. The Leafs haven't really had an meaningful negotiations with Nikolai Kulemin's camp. And Pen's general manager Jim Rutherford -- when asked last Friday about Malkin's seeming unhappiness last season -- was quick to reply: "I'm going to try to make him happy on July 1." A move to the Pens would mean a big fantasy upgrade for the winger.

Leafs' Kulemin Finds Net Wednesday

News: Nikolai Kulemin collected his ninth goal of the season in Wednesday's loss to the Lightning.
Analysis: The 27-year-old found the net for the first time since Jan. 30, a span of 15 games. His scoring should stay relatively scarce while he remains outside of a top-six role.

Leafs' Kulemin Wants To Stay A Leaf

News: Nikolai Kulemin, whose game has picked up playing on the second line with Nazem Kadri and Joffrey Lupul, "would love to stay" with the Leafs, but knows he could be traded -- at the deadline or in the offseason -- because of pending free agency, reports the Toronto Sun.
Analysis: "I like everything here. It's the only team I have played for," said the winger. "I like the organization, the city, everything." Nikolai Kulemin has failed to live up to his 30-goal season from what feels like years ago, but he could still be looking for a raise on the $3-million he makes each year. And that would jettison him out of the Big Smoke fast.

Leafs' Kulemin: First Point In Eight Games

News: Nikolai Kulemin scored a sharp, high-glove goal on Ryan Miller in Wednesday's shootout win over the Sabres.
Analysis: His 30-goal season was clearly lightning in a bottle. This is his sixth goal and just his first point in his last eight games. He does deliver hits, so perhaps he does bring value to specialty formats. But there are probably other, more consistent options than a guy who'll likely finish with 20 points and 20 PIM.

Leafs' Kulemin Nets Another Winner

News: Nikolai Kulemin scored the game-winning goal Sunday against the Hurricanes.
Analysis: It's just his fifth goal of the season, albeit in 29 games given that ankle injury that kept him out. But remarkably, three of those five goals have been game winners. Go figure. He's been a fantasy disappointment in most formats -- you can probably find better options elsewhere.

Toronto's Kulemin Showing Signs Of Life

News: Nikolai Kulemin scored a goal and added an assist in Saturday's win over the Blackhawks. He has three points in his last two games and four in his last four.
Analysis: This is the first sign of life we've seen in the big winger this season. We're not ready to re-enter a relationship with him, but we're willing to listen.

Leafs' Kulemin Scores Goal In Loss

News: Nikolai Kulemin scored his second goal of the season during the Leafs' 3-2 overtime loss to the Sabres on Friday.
Analysis: The low-scoring but hard-hitting Nikolai Kulemin tallied his first point in four games and has been a bit of a disappointment for fantasy owners this season. He's got just the two goals and only three assists through 14 games this year.

Leafs' Kulemin: First Goal Of Season

News: Nikolai Kulemin scored his first goal of the season in Saturday's win over Buffalo. It stood up as the winner in a 4-2 victory.
Analysis: He now has three points in eight games this season. He needs to seriously pick up the production to prove his work to fantasy owners. Otherwise, he'll be soon known as a one-trick fantasy pony (hits).

Leafs Activate Kulemin From IR

News: Nikolai Kulemin (ankle) was activated from injured reserve Saturday, David Alter of Sportsnet 590 The Fan reports.
Analysis: The move officially confirms Nikolai Kulemin will be in the lineup Saturday against the Canucks, as expected. Kulemin missed 12 games with the ankle issue.

Leafs' Kulemin To Play Saturday

News: Nikolai Kulemin (ankle) will play Saturday, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: Nikolai Kulemin confirmed the news himself after he successfully completed Friday's practice without any setbacks. He's expected to join Jay McClement and Joffrey Lupul on the third line in his return.

Leafs' Kulemin (Ankle) Skates Friday

News: Nikolai Kulemin (ankle) skated during Friday's practice, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: He was on a regular line with Jay McClement and Joffrey Lupul during practice, a sign he's poised to return Saturday against the Canucks. He'd be a nice addition to the Leafs' forward ranks with Carter Ashton set to miss the next two games due to a suspension.

Leafs' Kulemin (Ankle) Close To Return

News: Nikolai Kulemin (ankle) may return to action later this week, reports the Toronto Star. "We'll see how it feels and we'll go from there," said Kulemin. "It's still sore, but it gets better every day. I do a lot in the gym."
Analysis: He's recovering from a broken bone in his foot that he suffered after taking a hard shot in practice. He was not wearing any supplemental foot protection, but will going forward. "Everybody is going to wear it now," said Nikolai Kulemin. "It's not a big difference. Maybe a difference on the turn. You get used to it."

Leafs' Kulemin Skates

News: Nikolai Kulemin (ankle) skated Wednesday, James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail reports.
Analysis: Head coach Randy Carlyle said previously that after Nikolai Kulemin began skating, he would likely need 7-10 days before he could be available again. Based on that prediction, Kulemin could return as early as October 30 against the Flames.

Leafs' Kulemin Progressing Slowly

News: Nikolai Kulemin (ankle) may not be ready for the start of the team's upcoming road trip as previously expected, THL.ca reports.
Analysis: Both Nikolai Kulemin and Mark Fraser are nearing a return to practice, however, which should help to provide a better indication as to when they might be ready for game action again.

Leafs' Kulemin Yet To Resume Skating

News: Nikolai Kulemin (ankle) has yet to resume skating, the Toronto Star reports.
Analysis: Nikolai Kulemin was initially given a two-week recovery timetable after chipping a bone in his ankle in the season's first week, but with that time frame coming to a close, it appears he's going to be out a little bit longer. The Maple Leafs have indicated internally that he won't return before Oct. 29, giving some of the team's young forwards a chance to gather further ice time.

Leafs' Kulemin To Miss Two Weeks With Ankle Issue

News: Nikolai Kulemin is dealing with a chipped bone in his ankle and will miss at least two weeks, the Toronto Sun reports.
Analysis: It's not immediately clear how or when Nikolai Kulemin suffered the injury, but his absence nonetheless creates an even bigger hole among the Leafs' forward ranks with David Clarkson still having to serve eight more games for his suspension. Spencer Abbott was called up from AHL Toronto to replace Kulemin, who tallied two assists in two games.

Leafs' Kulemin: Six Points In Last Seven Games

News: Nikolai Kulemin had a two-point game Thursday against Carolina and now has six points (four goals, two assists) in his last seven games.
Analysis: It's a nice little burst, but it further underscores his passenger status -- he only gets taken places if someone else drives. And his driver right now is Nazem Kadri who seems to pull out the best of whomever skates beside him. Pray it continues and then use Kuley's overall totals and so-called resurgence to trade him next fall for at least a little value in keeper formats.

Leafs' Kulemin: Two-Point Night

News: Nikolai Kulemin picked up two points -- a goal and an assist -- in Monday's win over the Flyers. He now has 12 points in 20 games this season.
Analysis: At this point, we're pretty much prepared to say he is what he is (although that's grammatically incorrect). His 30-goal season looks like the exception, not the rule.

Leafs' Kulemin: Five Assists In Six Games

News: Nikolai Kulemin may not have any goals, but he does have five assists in six games this season. He picked up the fifth in Tuesday's win over the Sabres.
Analysis: He was on a line with Nazem Kadri and Jay McClement. We'd like to see more goals -- any goals -- but he's still delivering at a solid pace. His fantasy value is on the rise again.

Kulemin Assists Leafs Wednesday

News: Nikolai Kulemin tallied three assists and finished plus-3 Wednesday in a 5-2 victory over Pittsburgh.
Analysis: The points were his first of the year. Seven Toronto forwards saw more power-play time than Nikolai Kulemin (1:46), but the Russian got the job done at even-strength.

Leafs' Kulemin Participates in First Practice

News: Nikolai Kulemin finally made his return from Russia and took place in his first full practice on Friday. According to Dave Hilson of the Toronto Sun, Kulemin "looked to be in good form as [he] participated in drills and a scrimmage that, in total, lasted approximately two hours."
Analysis: Nikolai Kulemin racked up 38 points in 36 games for Metallurg Magnitogorsk and was a league-leading plus-25. The Leafs could surely use that kind of production out of the big Russian, whose numbers declined dramatically last season after posting career highs of 30 goals and 57 points the previous year playing alongside Mikhail Grabovski and Clarke MacArthur.

Leafs' Kulemin Signs With KHL Team

News: Nikolai Kulemin has agreed to a deal with Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL during the NHL lockout, Yahoo! Sports reports.
Analysis: Nikolai Kulemin will be accompanied by Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin and Ottawa's Sergei Gonchar on the Magnitogorsk roster. Once the NHL lockout is resolved, Kulemin will be able to return the Leafs, who signed him to a two-year, $5.6 million extension in July.

Kulemin Re-signs With Leafs

News: Nikolai Kulemin signed a two-year contract worth $5.6 million with the Maple Leafs on Friday, TSN's Darren Dreger reports.
Analysis: Nikolai Kulemin avoided arbitration with the Leafs by signing the extension. He had previously expressed his desire to remain with the team. Kulemin is looking to bounce back from a mediocre season, of which he had seven goals in 70 games. played.

Kulemin Wants To Stay With Leafs

News: Nikolai Kulemin, a restricted free agent who has been offered arbitration by the Leafs, wants to remain with Toronto, reports the Toronto Star.
Analysis: He's coming off a poor offensive season -- his seven goals last year paled in comparison to the 30 he netted the year before. And the arrival of James van Riemsdyk may push him out of the top six. The two sides have exchanged numbers and arbitration hearings for the entire league will be held from July 20 to Aug. 4. The two sides can continue to negotiate right up until their hearing.
