Isles' Martin Will Play Wednesday

News: Matt Martin (undisclosed) is expected to return to the lineup for the playoff opener versus the Capitals on Wednesday, Newsday's Arthur Staple reports.
Analysis: Matt Martin had missed the last couple of games due to an undisclosed injury, but practiced Monday and stated that he felt "great" and ready to play again. The winger led the NHL in hits this season and will be relied upon to be a physical presence against a Washington team that also likes to play a hard-nosed game.

Isles' Martin Out Friday

News: Matt Martin (undisclosed) is not with the team in Pittsburgh and won't play Friday against the Penguins.
Analysis: The Islanders are playing it very close to the vest with their injuries, so there's no word on if Matt Martin will be able to return to the lineup for Saturday's regular-season finale versus the Blue Jackets. With the team clinching a playoff spot Thursday, it stands to reason that they could choose to play it safe with some of their banged-up players like Martin in order to ensure optimal health heading into the postseason.

Isles' Martin Unlikely To Play Friday

News: Matt Martin (undisclosed) is unlikely to play Friday versus the Penguins, according to Newsday.
Analysis: Matt Martin hasn't practiced since suffering the injury and with the Islanders history of playing it safe with their injuries, he may not play until he does practice or unless Saturday becomes a must win to get into the playoffs.

Isles' Martin Out Of Lineup Tuesday

News: Matt Martin is nursing a minor injury and will miss Tuesday's match against the Flyers.
Analysis: The fourth-line tough guy was limited to just 8:49 of ice time in the Isles' last game Saturday against the Sabres and will now sit out for his second match of the season. It's not expected that the injury will cost Matt Martin action beyond Tuesday, so those looking for help in the PIM and hit categories may still want to keep Martin on call for the final two games of the season.

Isles' Martin Returns Saturday

News: Matt Martin (suspension) will return to the lineup Saturday against the Panthers, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Matt Martin was suspended for Thursday's game versus the Predators after he laid an illegal hit on the Stars' Trevor Daley two nights earlier. The winger's abrasive style of play occasionally results in the league office laying down the hammer, but when he's on the ice, Martin is an asset in specialty formats. He leads the league with an astounding 318 hits and ranks seventh in PIM (114).

Islanders' Martin Suspended One Game

News: Matt Martin has been suspended one game for kneeing Dallas' Trevor Daley on Tuesday.
Analysis: Matt Martin will be forced to sit out Thursday's game against the Predators as a result of his actions in Tuesday's game. He will be eligible to return to action for the following game Saturday against the Panthers.

Isles' Martin Could Be Suspended

News: Matt Martin could be suspended after being ejected from the game Tuesday for kneeing, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple.
Analysis: Matt Martin was slated to have a phone hearing with the NHL on Wednesday to determine if there will be any further discipline. Martin kneed the Stars' Trevor Daley, who apparently will be out for a while due to the injury, and could be suspended up to five games, although one or two is more likely. Martin will be missed in leagues that reward hits.

Islanders' Martin Picks Up Another Assist

News: Matt Martin registered an assist Tuesday in a 4-1 win over the Hurricanes.
Analysis: Matt Martin has been frequenting the scoresheet, with three helpers in the past five games. Still, he's best known for racking up hits, blocked shots and PIMs. The Islanders have lit the lamp 181 times as a team this season, ranking second in the NHL behind the Lightning. The impressive rate at which the Islanders are scoring obviously helps Martin's chances of adding to his assist totals, even as a bottom-six forward.

Martin Boosts Isles In Win

News: Matt Martin scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal and racked up 12 PIM in Tuesday's win over the Rangers.
Analysis: You won't get offense from Matt Martin too often, though he does have three goals in the last eight games, which qualifies as a hot streak by his standards. What you will get, though, is plenty of PIM and tons of hits -- he added another seven of those Tuesday, pushing his NHL-leading total to 225.

Isles' Martin Ends Point Drought With Goal

News: Matt Martin scored his fifth goal of the year Tuesday against the Canucks, snapping an eight-game scoring drought.
Analysis: Matt Martin generally makes his name with his body (and sometimes his fists), so anyone rolling him out in fantasy had to be happy with his seventh point in 40 games on the year, but probably happier with the five hits he delivered, pushing his season total to 182.

Points Coming In For Isles' Martin

News: Matt Martin notched his fourth goal of the season in Monday's shootout victory over the Devils.
Analysis: Though he's scored exactly 14 points in three of his last four seasons, Matt Martin has shown an ability to provide a little offense on occasional in addition to his duties as the Isles' top checker. He's notched points in three of his last four games and fired off a startling five shots on Monday night. Still, you're owning primarily for his massive hit totals, as he appears poised to lead the league in that category once again.

Isles' Martin Bags First Goal

News: Matt Martin scored his first goal of the season in Friday's shootout win over the Penguins.
Analysis: Matt Martin kicked off a string of three unanswered goals for the Islanders in a raucous first period. Rarely counted on to ignite the offense, Martin instead carries most of his value as a physical agitator. He's led the league in hits for three consecutive seasons and paces the NHL with 89 thus far in 2014-15.

Isles' Martin Scores Two Key Goals In Win

News: Matt Martin scored the Isles' final two goals and went plus-4 in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Hurricanes.
Analysis: His first goal made it 4-0, but the 'Canes ended up drawing within one -- so Matt Martin went ahead and scored again to make it 5-3, and Nathan Gerbe's tally 22 seconds later for Carolina turned Martin's goal into the game-winner. Despite this outstanding outing, Martin doesn't offer a lot of excitement for fantasy owners, considering he entered the night with all of 10 points and a minus-12 rating on the season.

Isles' Martin Credited With Game-Winner Monday

News: Matt Martin was responsible for the Islanders' game-winning goal in their furious comeback victory over the Canucks on Monday.
Analysis: Matt Martin provided his usual physicality with six hits in the game, but it was his backhanded score from the slot that gave the Islanders their first lead of the game. The goal was simply a nice cookie for fantasy owners who had been counting on Martin solely for hits and penalty minutes.

Martin To Return Tuesday For Isles

News: Matt Martin (lower body) will return to game action for the Islanders on Tuesday, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple.
Analysis: Matt Martin returns after missing three games and will bring his physical presence to the team. Martin has become a fan favorite for his willingness to hit anything and everything that moves, and can be a solid player in leagues that reward hits.

Isles' Martin Expected To Return Tuesday

News: Matt Martin (lower body) is expected to return to game action Tuesday, according to Newsday.
Analysis: Matt Martin has now missed three games but stated he feels much better and should play in the next game. Martin will never be known for his touch around the net but his willingness to use the body is something the Isles have missed of late. He will be a welcome addition when ready to return.

Isles' Martin Returns To Practice

News: Matt Martin (lower body) practiced with the Islanders on Friday, according to Newsday.
Analysis: Matt Martin was still limited in practice and seems unlikely to play Saturday versus the Devils but could return to the lineup Sunday. Although he will never be mistaken for a goal scorer, he can be a valuable fantasy player in leagues that reward hits.

Isles' Martin Ruled Out For Thursday

News: Matt Martin (lower body) has been ruled out for Thursday's game against the Maple Leafs, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Matt Martin was back on the ice for Wednesday's practice, but coach Jack Capuano said the winger still needed a little more time to recover from the injury. He could be a possibility for either of the Islanders' weekend games.

Isles' Martin Practices

News: Updating a prior report, Matt Martin (lower body) did participate in Wednesday's practice.
Analysis: It was originally reported that Matt Martin was not going to practice, but he ended up taking the ice after all. His status for Thursday's game against the Maple Leafs is still up in the air, but we'll probably know more after the morning skate.

Isles' Martin Still Out

News: Matt Martin (lower body) did not practice Wednesday, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Matt Martin has been dealing with the injury for a week now, and it seems unlikely at this point that he'll be available for Thursday's game against the Maple Leafs. The winger's status shouldn't affect too many fantasy lineups, though, considering he has just four goals and four assists through 60 games this season.

Isles' Martin Nursing Lower-Body Injury

News: Matt Martin is tending to a lower-body injury and skated on his own for Wednesday's practice, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.
Analysis: The injury isn't something that was reported heading into the Olympic break, so it's likely nothing more than a minor injury for the fourth-liner. In leagues that count hits, Matt Martin is one-category gold, as his 275 on the season lead the NHL by a wide margin.

Isles' Martin Leading League In Hits

News: Matt Martin leads the league with 275 hits at the break.
Analysis: With eight points, 35 blocks and a minus-9 rating in 60 games, Matt Martin has been a drain in just about every other category besides penalty minutes (74). However, few players can say they specialize in a category quite like Martin. He has 63 more hits than Toronto's Cody Franson, who ranks second in the league.

Isles Fall Despite Martin's Strong Effort

News: Matt Martin delivered three shots and an impressive 11 hits Saturday in the Islanders' overtime loss to Pittsburgh. The game ends the Isles' season in a 4-2 first-round series loss.
Analysis: Even more impressively, he was only on the ice for 12 minutes in the contest. This many hits will give the coaching staff something to ponder as the Islanders mull over their offseason plans. Matt Martin is signed for three more years, so he figures to be in the team's long-term plans.

Martin Notches Goal, Assist For Isles

News: Matt Martin has a goal and an assist to lead the Islanders over Montreal Tuesday.
Analysis: Usually when Matt Martin gets noticed in the box score, it's because he either leads the team in hits or racks up penalty minutes. On Tuesday, however, he scored his second goal of the season and tripled his point total.

Martin Signs Four-Year Extension With Islanders

News: Matt Martin signed a four-year, $4 million extension with the Islanders on Sunday, according to the Islanders Point Blank.
Analysis:  Matt Martin is a third or fourth line player, the type of skater who adds grit and heart. He does have some upside, but has yet to score double digit goals in an NHL season.
