Kings' Martinez Notches Two Points

News: Alec Martinez collected a goal and an assist -- both on the power play -- in Thursday's 4-0 smothering of the Coyotes.
Analysis: In his second game back from a finger ailment and first since signing a six-year contract extension with Los Angeles, Alec Martinez showed why he's worth the money. In addition to the power-play offense, he blocked four shots and finished plus-1. A big offensive breakout may be in the works now that he's healthy.

Kings And Martinez Agree To Extension

News: Alec Martinez has signed a six-year extension, $24 million with the Kings, Bob McKenzie of TSN reports.
Analysis: Alec Martinez was set to become an unrestricted free agent if the two sides couldn't come to an agreement by July 1. The 27-year-old blue liner posted a career-high 22 points last season and is off to another good start with seven points through 18 games for the defending Cup champs.

Martinez Returns To Lineup For Kings

News: Alec Martinez (finger) logged 19 minutes of ice time in his return to the lineup Tuesday.
Analysis: Alec Martinez recorded two shots on goal in his return and even saw some time on the power play. He'll be paired with Robyn Regehr on the team's second defensive pair while at even strength.

Kings' Martinez (Finger) To Play Tuesday

News: Alec Martinez (finger) will take the ice Tuesday, Lisa Dillman of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis: He must have made it through warmups OK, and can be deployed as usual for fantasy purposes.

Kings' Martinez On Ice For Pregame Warmups

News: Alec Martinez (finger) was on the ice for pregame warmups Tuesday and could be in line to play against the Bruins, Jon Rosen of LA Kings Insider reports.
Analysis: The Kings will probably wait and see how Alec Martinez makes it through the warmup before rendering a decision on his status, but it's clear at this point that he's nearly all the way recovered from the injury that has cost him the previous seven games. Martinez hasn't taken much contact of late while nursing the injury, however, which may prompt the Kings to play it safe and hold him out until Thursday.

Kings' Martinez Nearing Return From Finger Injury

News: Alec Martinez (finger) continues to progress, but his status for Tuesday is uncertain, the Los Angeles Times reports. "He's doing everything better, so meaning that he skated with the team and done all that stuff," Kings Coach Darryl Sutter said. "But everybody can skate with the team. It's being able to shoot and pass, and the next part of it will be the contact part of it."
Analysis: It doesn't sound like Alec Martinez is quite ready to return Tuesday, but could do so Thursday.

Kings' Martinez Remains Sidelined

News: Alec Martinez (finger) will not play in Saturday's game against the Blackhawks, Elliott Teaford of the Los Angeles News Group reports.
Analysis: Alec Martinez will sit out for the seventh straight game, but he is making progress in his recovery, and is nearing a return.

Kings' Martinez (Finger) Unlikely For Saturday

News: Alec Martinez seems unlikely to play in Saturday's game against the Blackhawks, Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis: Alec Martinez hasn't appeared in a game since undergoing finger surgery Nov. 14. Although it appears he is nearly there, coach Darryl Sutter indicated he wanted him 100 percent to avoid reopening the wound. If he doesn't play Saturday, Tuesday against the Bruins would be his next opportunity to return.

Kings' Martinez Takes Part In Morning Skate

News: Alec Martinez (finger) took part in Tuesday's morning skate, Jon Rosen of LA Kings Insider reports.
Analysis: Alec Martinez stayed on the ice for extra work following the session, so it does not appear he will play Tuesday. It's not entirely clear when he will be able to play next, as it was reported earlier this week that he would be "out a while;" however, with him skating each of the last two days, it looks like he could return earlier than expected.

Kings' Martinez Practices

News: Alec Martinez (finger) practiced with the team Monday, Jon Rosen of LA Kings Insider reports.
Analysis: Alec Martinez was wearing a red non-contact jersey at Monday's practice, so he's probably not that close to returning. It's a good sign that his rehab is progressing, but keep an eye out for him to endure contact at practice before getting back in the lineup.

Kings' Martinez To Remain 'Out A While'

News: Coach Darryl Sutter said Alec Martinez (finger) will remain "out a while" and shouldn't be considered day-to-day, Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis: Alec Martinez is traveling with the Kings on their road trip, but everything coach Darryl Sutter has said of late suggests that a return isn't imminent for the defenseman. He still needs to have some stitches removed from his finger, which will probably prevent him from doing much stick-handling until that happens.

Kings' Martinez Likely To Miss Beyond A Week

News: Though Alec Martinez (finger) was able to skate for a second consecutive day, coach Darryl Sutter believes the blueliner will be out longer than the one week GM Dean Lombardi projected him to miss, Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times. "We've just got to wait for the wound to heal and that's going to take some time," Sutter said.
Analysis: Alec Martinez suffered the injury last Thursday and appeared to be progressing well, but the possible risk of him infecting the finger by returning to action to quickly will prompt the Kings to take things slow with him. The loss of Martinez has been a tough blow to take for a defensive corps that's already without Slava Voynov due to an indefinite suspension.

Kings' Martinez Skates Again Thursday

News: Alec Martinez (finger) was on the ice again for Thursday's morning skate, but isn't expected to play later in the evening against the Hurricanes, Jon Rosen of LAKingsInsider.com reports.
Analysis: General manager Dean Lombardi said a few days earlier that he expects Alec Martinez to miss a week, so the blueliner will probably need an additional day of practice before possibly returning to the lineup Saturday against the Stars.

Kings' Martinez Nearing A Return

News: Alec Martinez (finger) skated before practice Wednesday and could return soon, the LA Times reports.
Analysis: Alec Martinez was expected to miss a week of action which could put him back into the lineup as soon as Thursday if he's able to take part in the morning skate.

Kings' Martinez Out One Week

News: Alec Martinez (finger) is expected to miss one week, Lisa Dillman of the LA Times reports.
Analysis: The news that Alec Martinez needed surgery on his finger was not very encouraging at first, but it sounds like he won't end up missing very much time at all. The blueliner was playing well before suffering the injury, with two goals and five assists in 17 games, including four points in his last three.

Encouraging News For Kings' Martinez

News: Head coach Darryl Sutter provided encouraging details Saturday about Alec Martinez's injury, indicating that Martinez's recent surgery will not keep him out for a long period of time, LA Kings Insider reports.
Analysis: The nature of the injury had been a mystery, but Sutter said Saturday that Alec Martinez underwent minor surgery on his pinky. "You know what? Everything went well," Sutter said. "It was basically a finger - they had to do some suturing on his finger and clean up his nail a bit. When it heals, then he'll be ready." Sutter didn't provide a timetable for Martinez's expected return, but it doesn't sound like this will be a multi-week absence. This is welcome news for the Kings' depleted blue line.

Kings' Martinez Undergoes Finger Surgery

News: Alec Martinez underwent surgery on his finger Friday, Elliott Teaford of the Los Angeles News Group reports.
Analysis: Alec Martinez's timetable hasn't been delineated at this moment, but it will likely cost him an extended period of time following the procedure. Robyn Regehr is expected to return soon to give the team six healthy defensemen, but if he can't go Saturday, the team will need to make a move to add an extra blueliner. That could prove difficult given the team's current cap situation.

Kings' Martinez (Undisclosed) Does Not Practice

News: Alec Martinez (undisclosed) was not on the ice for Friday's practice, Jon Rosen of LA Kings Insider reports.
Analysis: Alec Martinez left Thursday's game with an undisclosed injury and his status still hasn't been clarified or updated. At this point he should be considered day-to-day heading into Saturday's game against the Ducks.

Kings' Martinez Leaves With Undisclosed Injury

News: Alec Martinez left during the second period of Thursday's game with an undisclosed injury, Curtis Zupke of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Alec Martinez wasn't on the bench to start the third period, and is reportedly still being evaluated. The Kings will play with five defensemen while he is out, and an update on his condition should be provided in the near future.

Martinez Records Three Assists For Kings

News: Alec Martinez had his best game of the season with three assists in a 5-1 win over Vancouver on Saturday.
Analysis: Alec Martinez struggled offensively to start the season with just one assists in his first 11 games but now has two goals and three assists over his last five games.

Kings' Martinez Finds Net For First Goal

News: Alec Martinez registered his first goal of the season in Friday's loss to the Red Wings.
Analysis: A Stanley Cup Finals hero for the Kings after scoring the series-clinching goal against the Rangers in Game 5, Alec Martinez hasn't been able to carry his playoff heroics over to the regular season. Despite holding down a regular role on defense in the team's first 11 games, Martinez has accrued only two points. It's worth staying patient with him in deeper leagues since he's still sitting on a plus-6 rating and has fired off shots with regularity (2.5 per game), suggesting the goals could start to trickle in once he starts enjoying some better luck.

Martinez Sews Up Kings' Cup

News: Alec Martinez scored the Cup-clinching goal in Friday's Game 5 double-overtime win over the Rangers, marking the second-consecutive series in which he scored the series-winning goal.
Analysis: Alec Martinez had a modest 11 goals and 22 points this past regular season but emerged as one of the Kings' steadier defenders during the playoffs with five goals and five assists while seeing regular power-play time on the team's second unit. He's still 26 years old and posted double-digit goals this past season, so he will be worth a look in deeper leagues come draft time. Just don't pay for his playoff performance.

Martinez's Deflected Shot Sends Kings To Finals

News: Alec Martinez found the net for the game-winning and series-clinching goal in Sunday's Game 7 victory over the Blackhawks.
Analysis: Alec Martinez's winning tally came at the 5:47 mark in overtime, with his wrister deflecting off Blackhawks defenseman Nick Leddy and into the opposing goal to send the Kings to their second Stanley Cup Finals in three seasons. The goal was somewhat fluky, as Martinez said after the game that he didn't even realize the puck went in the net initially, but he'll go down in franchise lore for his Game 7 winner. Martinez finished the series with three total points, including goals in each of the final two games.

Martinez Scores In Kings' Loss

News: Alec Martinez scored one of Los Angeles' three goals in Friday's Game 6 loss to Chicago in the Western Conference finals.
Analysis: Alec Martinez has a solid eight points through 20 games in playoffs and has been seeing some power play time on the second unit. He's a steady player and, along with his teammates, will need to be better defensively.
