Devils Balk With Salmela

News: Salmela was not re-signed for the upcoming 2011-12 season, as the Devils did not make him a qualifying offer, according to the New York Post. He will play in Russia's KHL during the upcoming season.
Analysis: Salmela won a gold medal at this spring's world championships with Finland and registered one goal and six assists in 48 games with New Jersey. He's a dynamic skater that struggled to find a niche during two separate stints with New Jersey.

Devils Waive Salmela

News: Salmela was placed on waivers by New Jersey Thursday and will report to Albany (AHL) if he is not claimed by another team, the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: Salmela has been struggling for ice time of late with the Devils having a whole stable of third-pairing calibre defensemen. He's recently recovered from knee surgery, but the Devils do not see him receiving much ice time in the future. He returned to the Devils as part of the Ilya Kovalchuk deal last February.

Salmela Out Sunday for Devils

News: Salemla will be a healthy scratch Sunday aginst Tampa Bay, the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Salmela has an assist in 11 games this season, boasting a minus-6 rating. The Devils are constantly shuffling around their blue line and Salmela's one of several fighting for a chair when the music stops.

Salmela Healthy Scratch in Devils Loss

News: Salmela was a healthy scratch Tuesday in the loss to Washington, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.
Analysis: Salmela recently returned from knee surgery but hasn't impressed with a minus-3 and no points in three games. He's hardly a reliable play especially when the Devils' defensive performance this season is measured into the equation.

Salmela Returns in Devils Win

News: Salmela played 14:57 Wednesday in his return from ACL surgery.
Analysis: Salmela was part of a Devils win the team desperately needed. He can be a solid offensive player for the team but it would be best to wait and see how the team utilizes Salmela before adding him to your lineup in deeper leagues. Monitor his recovery from surgery as well.

Salmela to Return for Devils

News: Salmela (knee surgery) will make his season debut Wednesday against Phoenix, the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Salmela has been practicing the last several days following a conditioning stint in the AHL. Salmela is coming off ACL surgery and has a bit of an offensive flair to his game, however, with the way New Jersey is playing, it's hard to endorse a Devils blueliner. Give him a game or two to see how he handles his return, but expect him to see power play time immediately.

Devils' Salmela Completes Conditioning Assignment

News: Salmela (knee) is back from his conditioning assignment, Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: He was scoreless with a minus-3 rating in two games with Albany (AHL) in his conditioning assignment, but should be ready to return to the Devils' lineup in the coming days.

Devils Send Salmela on Conditioning Assignment

News: The Devils sent Salmela (knee) to AHL Albany on Thursday for a conditioning assignment, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: We don't know how long Salmela will spend there, but he seems to be on track to be available for the Devils again soon, probably within the next week or so.

Devils' Salmela Nearing Rehab Assignment

News: Salmela (knee) could embark on a conditioning assignment at Albany in the near future, Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: It's unclear just how long he'll be on his assignment, but Salmela appears to be on track for a return in the next week or so barring a setback.

Devils' Salmela Continues to Practice

News: Salmela (knee) continues to practice with the team, but a return date remains uncertain, the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Salmela said he has not had any problems with his knee during practice, so there is still a decent chance he is able to return in early December as originally planned.

Devils' Salmela Targeting December Return

News: Salmela (knee) is hoping to return around early December, Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Salmela is still recovering from knee surgery, but he has been skating for a few weeks and was able to practice Thursday. Salmela admitted his timetable may be a bit optimistic, but it looks like he should be able to return to game action at some point this season.

Salmela Begins Year on Devils IR

News: Salmela (knee) was placed on long-term injured reserve to begin the season, the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: Not much of a surprise as he underwent knee surgery in September and will miss significant time. He's recovering from a torn ACL, so he may not play this season.

Devils' Salmela Still Months Away

News: Salmela is behind schedule in his rehab from knee surgery and is still probably months away from being able to practice, the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: Training camp is out of the question at this point, and Salmela will meet with a doctor on September 28 to determine when he might be able to begin skating. He tore his ACL and meniscus in May, so it's really not surprising that he's still nowhere close to being ready. He may not be able to return to game action until the calendar turns to 2011.

Salmela back in action Saturday

News: Five days after being knocked out while scoring a goal, Devils D Anssi Salmela returned to action Saturday in a loss to the Hurricanes.
Analysis: Salmela came over from Atlanta in the Ilya Kovalchuk deal and is more of a lower-pairing defenseman with his new team. Continue to ignore him in the majority of Fantasy leagues.

Salmela held out again Friday

News: Devils D Anssi Salmela missed his second straight game with a concussion on Friday against the Predators.
Analysis: We highly doubt Salmela will be on the ice Saturday against the Avalanche since the Olympic break is days away. Salmela could use the extra time to rest. Salmela arrived last week in a trade with Atlanta. Salmela is more of a long-term Fantasy keeper when healthy. The former first-round pick has yet to hit his stride in the NHL.

Salmela sits out Flyers rematch

News: Devils defenseman Anssi Salmela was scratched on Wednesday against the Flyers. He suffered a concussion in Monday night's loss to the Flyers in Philadelphia.
Analysis: Even though Salmela was up and about after the incident on Monday, he had had memory loss and that is why New Jersey might keep him out until after the Olympic break. Salmela arrived last week in a trade with Atlanta. Salmela is more of a long-term Fantasy keeper when healthy. The former first-round pick has yet to hit his stride in the NHL.

Salmela officially out Wednesday

News: The Newark Star-Ledger reports that, as expected, Devils D Anssi Salmela (head) will not play Wednesday night against the Flyers. Salmela was knocked out cold by Jeff Carter a split second after scoring in Monday's loss to the Flyers.
Analysis: The Star-Ledger also reports that Salmela had memory loss and a headache, so likely sustained a concussion. Luckily for Fantasy owners, Salmela is more of a long-term Fantasy keeper when healthy, as the former first-round pick has yet to hit his stride in the NHL.

Salmela stretchered off Monday

News: Devils defensemen Anssi Salmela said he had a headache, but was otherwise OK after being taken off the ice on a stretcher following a scary hit to the face from the Philadelphia Flyers' Jeff Carter. As he scored a short-handed goal that gave the Devils a 2-0 lead in the second period Monday night, Salmela was struck hard by Carter's right shoulder as he skated by. Salmela tumbled to the ice and remained face down for several minutes, until the Devils' medical staff lifted him onto a stretcher. At the end of the second period, Salmela was seen walking and talking. "I didn't see it coming," he said, adding that he lost consciousness for a few moments. "It's no big deal. It's just hockey. I'm getting better now. Just a bit of a headache, but I think everything else is good."
Analysis: The 25-year-old Salmela, playing his second game since arriving as part of last week's trade with Atlanta for Ilya Kovalchuk, has scored two goals this season. The 25-year-old blueliner is excited to be back with New Jersey and was receiving steady minutes -- something he didn't have the luxury with Atlanta. Luckily, Salmela appears to have dodged a serious injury. Although, we wouldn't be surprised if he misses a game or two. Salmela is more of a long-term Fantasy keeper when healthy. The former first-round pick has yet to hit his stride in the NHL.

Salmela on his way back to NJ

News: Ilya Kovalchuk has been traded to the New Jersey Devils. The Atlanta Thrashers sent Kovalchuk and defenseman Anssi Salmela to the Devils on Thursday night for right winger Niclas Bergfors, defenseman Johnny Oduya, prospect Patrice Cormier and a 2010 first-round pick. The teams also swapped second-round picks this year.
Analysis: Salmela, 25, had a goal and four assists in 29 games this season for Atlanta. The Finn was acquired by the Thrashers from the Devils in exchange for defenseman Niclas Havelid and forward Myles Stoesz on March 2, 2009. The former Finnish league standout really hasn't gotten a fair chance to showcase his skills in the NHL and we don't know exactly what New Jersey has in store for him. Continue to treat him as a long-term Fantasy keeper until further notice.

Salmela has assist vs. Sabres

News: Thrashers D Anssi Salmela tallied an assist and finished at minus-1 on Friday against the Sabres. It was his third assist and second in six games.
Analysis: Salmela dressed for only four games in December. The Thrashers have a pretty good set of blueliners, so it's tough for Salmela to crack the rotation on a regular basis. Salmela is a New Jersey castoff with a lot of talent, but until he finds a regular spot on the blue line, he is nothing more than a long-term Fantasy keeper.

Salmela has no points in December

News: Thrashers D Anssi Salmela had no points and finished at even in 14:38 of ice time on Wednesday against the Flames. He also took a minor penalty. Salmela has no points in three December games.
Analysis: Salmela has dressed only 16 times for Atlanta in 2009-10 since the Thrashers have a pretty set rotation of blueliners. Salmela is a New Jersey castoff with a lot of talent, but until he finds a regular spot on the blue line, he is nothing more than a long-term Fantasy keeper.

Salmela re-signs with Atlanta

News: The Thrashers re-signed defenseman Anssi Salmela to a multi-year contract Thursday. Salmela, 24, recorded six points (one goal, five assists) in 26 NHL games last season with New Jersey and Atlanta.
Analysis: Salmela, who was acquired by the Thrashers for Niclas Havelid and Myles Stoesz on March 2, scored his first-career NHL goal in his second game with Atlanta on March 16 vs. Washington. He posted three points (one goal, two assists) in nine games with the Thrashers following the trade. The 6-1, 200-pound defenseman also appeared in 40 American Hockey League games with Lowell and Chicago, posting 24 points (eight goals, 16 assists). Prior to his North American career, the Nokia, Finland native spent four seasons in the Finish Elite League, recording 77 points (36 goals, 41 assists) in 208 games with Tappara Tampere and Lahti. It seems the Thrashers were more inclined to allow Salmela to showcase his offensive skills, while the Devils made him prove his defensive talents before being a regular. Salmela could have a breakout season in 2009-10 for Atlanta, but still has low-end Fantasy appeal to open the season.

Salmela misses season finale

News: Atlanta D Anssi Salmela was unable to make it back into the Thrashers lineup for Saturday's season finale against the Lightning. He missed the final five games of the season due to a facial injury.
Analysis: Salmela's injury is not expected to be something that will keep him on the pine beginning next season. He is a promising young player and can be someone worth hanging on to in long-term keeper leagues.

Salmela misses Panthers game

News: Thrashers D Anssi Salmela did not return to the lineup Thursday against the Panthers and missed a fourth game with a facial injury. He remains questionable for Saturday's season finale against the Lightning.
Analysis: The Thrashers aren't headed anywhere fast, so dressing Salmela isn't a must. He has totaled one goal and two assists in nine games with the Thrashers since being acquired in a trade from New Jersey. Salmela is a promising young player, but nothing more than a long-term Fantasy keeper.

Salmela misses third straight game

News: Thrashers D Anssi Salmela (face) did not return to the lineup Tuesday against the Capitals. He has missed the last three games and remains questionable for Thursday against the Panthers.
Analysis: Salmela was a key part of the trade that sent Niclas Havelid to New Jersey in March. He has totaled one goal and two assists in nine games with the Thrashers. He is starting to see a decent amount of PT on the blue line, but the Finnish import still has more long-term Fantasy appeal at this stage of his career.
