Zatkoff Set To Serve As Pens' Postseason Backup

News: Jeff Zatkoff will serve as Pittsburgh's backup goalie in the playoffs, the Penguins' website reports.
Analysis: Pens coach Dan Bylsma said that, while Tomas Vokoun will work with the team, Marc-Andre Fleury and Jeff Zatkoff would get the bulk of practice time.

Pens' Zatkoff Suffers Shootout Loss Sunday

News: Jeff Zatkoff stopped 31 of 33 shots in a 3-2 shootout loss to Ottawa on Sunday.
Analysis: He gave up shootout goals on both Senators' attempts. Jeff Zatkoff enters the postseason with an unsettled backup role. He could relieve Marc-Andre Fleury if the starter gets hurt or suffers another meltdown, or the team could turn to Tomas Vokoun.

Pens Go With Zatkoff Sunday

News: Jeff Zatkoff will start in net for the Penguins on Sunday, Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: Jeff Zatkoff will get the start on Sunday after Fleury's Saturday start. While Zatkoff's start in the Saturday-Sunday set isn't surprising, the day he started is a bit of a surprise considering Sunday is the team's regular season finale.

Pens' Zatkoff: Four Goals On 20 Shots

News: Jeff Zatkoff allowed four goals on 20 shots in Saturday's 4-0 loss to Minnesota.
Analysis: His teammates didn't give him any help, but he didn't help himself either -- all four goals were at even strength and a couple came from checking line snipers. This was likely his last appearance this season ... barring injury, of course.

Pens' Zatkoff Starting Saturday

News: Jeff Zatkoff will start in goal Saturday against the Wild, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: The Pens will save Marc-Andre Fleury for Sunday's matchup against Colorado, and go with Jeff Zatkoff against Minnesota. Zatkoff posted a 2.45 GAA and a .926 save percentage in March, but ended up with just a 3-3-0 record.

Pens' Zatkof Takes Loss Thursday

News: Jeff Zatkoff allowed three goals on 32 shots in a 3-2 loss to Los Angeles on Thursday.
Analysis: He played well enough to win, but the Kings effectively shut down Pittsburgh and its power play -- the Pens went 0-for-7 on the man advantage. Jeff Zatkoff received Dan Bylsma's endorsement earlier in the day, when the coach said he was confident in the 23-year-old's ability to serve as the backup to Marc-Andre Fleury in the playoffs.

Pens Will Start Zatkoff On Thursday

News: Jeff Zatkoff will be in the net Thursday against the Kings, Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis: The Penguins will evidently save No. 1 goalie Marc-Andre Fleury for Friday's game against the Blue Jackets, leaving Jeff Zatkoff to handle the tougher of the two assignments. Zatkoff has proven his worth as a backup with a respectable 2.55 GAA and .915 save percentage to accompany his sparkling 12-4-1 record.

Pens' Zatkoff Victorious Saturday

News: Jeff Zatkoff turned aside 21-of-24 shots Saturday, as the Pens grounded the Lightning 4-3 in OT.
Analysis: The 26-year-old rookie netminder proved again to be a serviceable backup to Marc-Andre Fleury, recording his 12th win in 17 starts this season. The future is somewhat unclear for Jeff Zatkoff with veteran Tomas Vokoun reportedly nearing a return after missing the entire season with blood clots and a pelvis injury. However, as long as Zatkoff is in net -- similar to to Bruins backup Chad Johnson -- he makes for a great start on one of the league's premiere clubs.

Pens Start Zatkoff On Saturday

News: Jeff Zatkoff will be in net for the Penguins when they face the Lightning on Saturday.
Analysis: Jeff Zatkoff has allowed just four goals over his last three games so he'll get the nod here to give Marc-Andre Fleury a rest. He is 11-4-1 with a 2.52 GAA and .918 save percentage this season.

Zatkoff Grabs Win For Pens

News: Jeff Zatkoff stopped 32 of 33 in a win over Dallas on Tuesday.
Analysis: Jeff Zatkoff played back to back games — after entering Sunday's game with Marc-Andre Fleury letting in three on 15 shots — and he has a .962 save percentage over those two matches. It's hard to imagine he'll take a lot of starts away from Fleury down the stretch, but he's certainly strung together a nice run, especially considering Fleury has let in seven in the last three and a half periods of play.

Zatkoff Will Start For Pens Tuesday

News: Jeff Zatkoff will get the nod in net Tuesday night against the Stars.
Analysis: Jeff Zatkoff, who stopped 19 of 20 shots in a relief effort Sunday against the Flyers, has played well since October. The Penguins are facing numerous injuries, but could be getting a couple starters back Tuesday.

Zatkoff Plays Well For Pens on Sunday

News: Jeff Zatkoff relieved Fleury on Sunday and stopped 19 of 20 Philadelphia shots.
Analysis: There was a school of thought saying Jeff Zatkoff should have started the game, as Fleury was making back-to-back starts for just the second time in 2013-14. Goaltending really wasn't Pittsburgh's problem so much as lackluster special teams play. Zatkoff was officially saddled with the loss, giving him a 10-4-1 mark.

Penguins' Zatkoff Stops 31 In Win

News: Jeff Zatkoff made 31 saves on 33 shots in a win over the Capitals on Monday.
Analysis: Jeff Zatkoff has not played terribly well in his backup role, as he has a .912 save percentage and 2.70 GAA. However, he's got 10 wins in 14 appearances, and playing for Pittsburgh always makes him a good bet to pick up the stray W.

Pens' Zatkoff Confirmed For Monday

News: Coach Dan Bylsma confirmed after optional skate that Jeff Zatkoff would start Monday vs. the Capitals, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: The Penguins will save No. 1 starter Marc-Andre Fleury for the second half of the team's back-to-back with the Capitals in Pittsburgh, while Jeff Zatkoff draws the road nod.

Zatkoff The Expected Starter For Pens On Monday

News: Jeff Zatkoff was the first goalie off the ice at Monday's optional skate and is expected to receive the start against the Capitals, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: The Penguins again appear poised to split up a back-to-back between Jeff Zatkoff and No. 1 goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, as they did Thursday and Friday. Zatkoff made 42 saves in Thursday's start against the Sharks, but was beaten for four goals in the 5-3 defeat.

Pens' Zatkoff Likely To Start Thursday

News: Jeff Zatkoff was the first goalie off the ice at morning skate and appears likely to receive the start Thursday vs. the Sharks, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: With the Penguins beginning a back-to-back set out west, it appears Jeff Zatkoff will lead off, with Marc-Andre Fleury presumably drawing the nod Friday vs. the Ducks. Zatkoff has actually performed better on the road than he has in Pittsburgh this season, owning a 6-1-1 record, 2.50 GAA and .917 save percentage over eight appearances.

Pens' Zatkoff Stops 42 In Spot-Start Loss

News: Jeff Zatkoff was peppered with 46 shots by the Sharks on Thursday, and though he stopped 42 of them, it wasn't enough in a 5-3 loss.
Analysis: It was Jeff Zatkoff's first appearance since way back on Jan. 30. Despite the four goals, it's hard to blame the backup netminder for this one, considering the Pens only took 22 shots on goal against San Jose's 46.

Pens Confirm Zatkoff For Thursday

News: Jeff Zatkoff has been confirmed as the starter for Thursday's game against the Sharks.
Analysis: This more or less assures that coach Dan Bylsma will be saving Marc-Andre Fleury for Friday's highly-anticipated match vs. the Ducks.

Pens' Zatkoff Defeats Kings On Thursday

News: Jeff Zatkoff stopped 30 of 31 shots to defeat the Kings on Thursday.
Analysis: Though Jeff Zatkoff's road victory against one of the league's best teams was highly impressive, he's probably not going to see an increased workload anytime soon with Marc-Andre Fleury holding down the No. 1 job. Even so, Zatkoff has still been dependable as a spot starter, going 9-2-1 with a 2.64 GAA and .909 save percentage.

Pens' Zatkoff In Goal Thursday

News: Jeff Zatkoff will start between the pipes in Thursday's game against the Kings, Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: Jeff Zatkoff will look to continue his run of success as the backup goalie for the Penguins. Though he allowed four goals in his last start in net, he was able to knot up a win. He has won eight of his last nine decisions, but will face a more difficult matchup Thursday against the Kings.

Pens' Zatkoff Wins Again Thursday

News: Jeff Zatkoff stopped 30 of 34 shots in a 6-4 win over the Islanders on Thursday.
Analysis: The backup ran his unbeaten streak to nine games (8-0-1). He hasn't lost in regulation since his second start of the season, back on Oct. 25. His peripherals aren't great, but the Pens' offense seem to play well with him in goal -- averaging 4.55 goals during his nine-game unbeaten stretch.

Pens Go With Zatkoff On Thursday

News: Jeff Zatkoff will be in goal Thursday vs. the Islanders.
Analysis: Jeff Zatkoff will be spelling Marc-Andre Fleury a night after he turned away 23 of 24 shots in a win over the Canadiens. Thanks to a productive Penguins offense, Zatkoff has made for a good streaming option this season for those in search of wins. He sports an excellent 7-2-1 record despite mediocre ratios.

Pens' Zatkoff Allows Four Goals In Loss Friday

News: Jeff Zatkoff stopped 27 of 31 shots as the Penguins lost to the Oilers 4-3 in overtime Friday.
Analysis: Jeff Zatkoff looked as sharp as usual until the wheels fell off the wagon in the third period. He allowed three goals in the third to send the game into overtime and then gave up the game-winner just 1:01 into the overtime period. The loss was the backup netminder's second of the season and he is now 7-2-1 with a 2.67 GAA and .906 save percentage.

Pens To Start Zatkoff On Friday

News: Jeff Zatkoff will get the start in the net Friday vs. the Oilers, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: Jeff Zatkoff's starting assignment would suggest that No. 1 goalie Marc-Andre Fleury is being saved for Saturday's game against the Flames. With a 2.52 GAA and .910 save percentage in nine starts, Zatkoff has proven to be a competent backup for Fleury and should have a good chance at gathering the win over the Oilers, who carry a Western Conference-worst 14-27-5 record into Friday's contest.

Pens' Zatkoff Gets Sunday Win

News: Jeff Zatkoff won his seventh straight decision Sunday, stopping 25 of 28 shots in a 5-3 win over Columbus.
Analysis: The three goals he allowed represent his highest total since Nov. 22, when he also gave up three scores. His peripherals weren't great Sunday -- a 3.02 GAA and .893 save percentage -- but he got the job done by winning his fourth road game in five decisions. He'll continue to back up Marc-Fleury with a start every 10 days or so.
