Pens Reassign Zatkoff

News: Jeff Zatkoff was reassigned to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Wednesday.
Analysis: Jeff Zatkoff's reassignment perhaps hints that Thomas Greiss tested negative for the mumps, which had forced him to isolate himself from the team for the past two games. Zatkoff had taken over backup duties during that time, very nearly leading the Penguins' to a comeback victory over the Lightning on Tuesday. He'll rank as the organization's first call-up option if Marc-Andre Fleury or Thomas Greiss are forced to miss future action.

Pens' Zatkoff Shines In Relief Effort Tuesday

News: Jeff Zatkoff stopped 16 of 17 shots in a relief effort Tuesday but took the loss in a 4-3 decision against the Lightning.
Analysis: After he was sniped by Tyler Johnson on the first or second shot he faced, Jeff Zatkoff settled down and gave the Penguins a chance to come back. If Thomas Greiss is diagnosed with the mumps, then there's a chance Zatkoff could start a couple games in the coming two weeks as Pittsburgh plays five times in eight days following the Christmas break.

Pens To Recall Zatkoff

News: Coach Mike Johnston indicated Jeff Zatkoff will be recalled before Monday's game against the Panthers, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Jeff Zatkoff will be the backup for at least Monday's game with Thomas Greiss having been sent back to Pittsburgh to undergo testing for the mumps. Marc-Andre Fleury will almost certainly receive the start in net, but Zatkoff will be the goalie on the bench in the case of an emergency. The 27-year-old netminder has a 10-5-1 record witha 1.77 GAA and .926 save percentage with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season.

Penguins Reassign Zatkoff

News: Jeff Zatkoff was reassigned to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Friday.
Analysis: Jeff Zatkoff served as the backup to Marc-Andre Fleury on Thursday while Thomas Greiss (illness) remained under evaluation for a possible case of the mumps. Greiss' tests ended up coming back negative Friday morning, so he'll be cleared to rejoin the team for Saturday's game, thus making it unnecessary for the Penguins to keep Zatkoff around any longer.

Penguins Recall Zatkoff

News: Jeff Zatkoff was recalled from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Wednesday, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Jeff Zatkoff has played in 15 games this season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season, posting a 1.89 GAA and .918 save percentage. He will likely provide the Penguins with a backup in the event that Marc-Andre Fleury, who is being tested for the mumps, is unavailable.

Pens' Zatkoff To Return To AHL Action Friday

News: Jeff Zatkoff (lower body) will return to action Friday for AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Tony Androckitis of The Home News reports.
Analysis: Jeff Zatkoff made his last appearance on Oct. 21 for the AHL squad, departing late in the second period of that game with the injury. It sounds like he's back to full health, but Zatkoff still ranks a clear third behind Marc-Andre Fleury and Thomas Greiss on the Pens' organizational goalie depth chart.

Pens' Zatkoff Banged Up

News: Jeff Zatkoff has been dealing with a lower-body injury but is considered close to returning to action at AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Tom Venesky of The Times Leader reports.
Analysis: Jeff Zatkoff has been out since Oct. 21 with the injury, forcing 20-year-old Matt Murray into extended action. The Penguins seem content with Thomas Greiss as their backup goalie behind Marc-Andre Fleury, so it doesn't look like a soon-to-be-healthy Zatkoff will have an opportunity to earn his way back to Pittsburgh unless an injury surfaces.

Zatkoff Cut By Pens On Saturday

News: The Penguins placed Jeff Zatkoff on waivers Saturday.
Analysis: His fate was pretty much sealed after new GM Jim Rutherford signed fellow goalie, Thomas Greiss, to a contract over the summer. Jeff Zatkoff's $600K salary is reasonable enough for another organization to consider picking it up. Otherwise, he'll toil for AHL Wilkes-Barre and await an injury to starter Marc-Andre Fleury or Greiss.

Zatkoff's Time In Pittsburgh Over?

News: Jeff Zatkoff allowed two goals on eight shots in a 4-1 loss Monday in Minnesota.
Analysis: His time in a Pittsburgh sweater might be nearing an end. The team will almost surely go with Thomas Greiss over Jeff Zatkoff as a backup to Marc-Andre Fleury and given Zatkoff's $600K salary, it wouldn't be surprising to see another organization pick him up when he goes on waivers.

Pens' Zatkoff Fighting For His Job

News: Jeff Zatkoff made 18 saves in a 3-2 overtime victory against Minnesota on Thursday.
Analysis: He started twice against the Wild in 2013-14 and split the decisions with a win and a loss. Jeff Zatkoff is in the fight of his life right now to back up starter Marc-Andre Fleury as new head coach Mike Johnston has taken a liking to the newly-acquired Thomas Greiss (who was specifically brought in by new GM Jim Rutherford). As a result, it wouldn't be surprising to see Zatkoff open the season in the AHL.

Zatkoff Set To Serve As Pens' Postseason Backup

News: Jeff Zatkoff will serve as Pittsburgh's backup goalie in the playoffs, the Penguins' website reports.
Analysis: Pens coach Dan Bylsma said that, while Tomas Vokoun will work with the team, Marc-Andre Fleury and Jeff Zatkoff would get the bulk of practice time.

Pens' Zatkoff Suffers Shootout Loss Sunday

News: Jeff Zatkoff stopped 31 of 33 shots in a 3-2 shootout loss to Ottawa on Sunday.
Analysis: He gave up shootout goals on both Senators' attempts. Jeff Zatkoff enters the postseason with an unsettled backup role. He could relieve Marc-Andre Fleury if the starter gets hurt or suffers another meltdown, or the team could turn to Tomas Vokoun.

Pens Go With Zatkoff Sunday

News: Jeff Zatkoff will start in net for the Penguins on Sunday, Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: Jeff Zatkoff will get the start on Sunday after Fleury's Saturday start. While Zatkoff's start in the Saturday-Sunday set isn't surprising, the day he started is a bit of a surprise considering Sunday is the team's regular season finale.

Pens' Zatkoff: Four Goals On 20 Shots

News: Jeff Zatkoff allowed four goals on 20 shots in Saturday's 4-0 loss to Minnesota.
Analysis: His teammates didn't give him any help, but he didn't help himself either -- all four goals were at even strength and a couple came from checking line snipers. This was likely his last appearance this season ... barring injury, of course.

Pens' Zatkoff Starting Saturday

News: Jeff Zatkoff will start in goal Saturday against the Wild, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: The Pens will save Marc-Andre Fleury for Sunday's matchup against Colorado, and go with Jeff Zatkoff against Minnesota. Zatkoff posted a 2.45 GAA and a .926 save percentage in March, but ended up with just a 3-3-0 record.

Pens' Zatkof Takes Loss Thursday

News: Jeff Zatkoff allowed three goals on 32 shots in a 3-2 loss to Los Angeles on Thursday.
Analysis: He played well enough to win, but the Kings effectively shut down Pittsburgh and its power play -- the Pens went 0-for-7 on the man advantage. Jeff Zatkoff received Dan Bylsma's endorsement earlier in the day, when the coach said he was confident in the 23-year-old's ability to serve as the backup to Marc-Andre Fleury in the playoffs.

Pens Will Start Zatkoff On Thursday

News: Jeff Zatkoff will be in the net Thursday against the Kings, Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis: The Penguins will evidently save No. 1 goalie Marc-Andre Fleury for Friday's game against the Blue Jackets, leaving Jeff Zatkoff to handle the tougher of the two assignments. Zatkoff has proven his worth as a backup with a respectable 2.55 GAA and .915 save percentage to accompany his sparkling 12-4-1 record.

Pens' Zatkoff Victorious Saturday

News: Jeff Zatkoff turned aside 21-of-24 shots Saturday, as the Pens grounded the Lightning 4-3 in OT.
Analysis: The 26-year-old rookie netminder proved again to be a serviceable backup to Marc-Andre Fleury, recording his 12th win in 17 starts this season. The future is somewhat unclear for Jeff Zatkoff with veteran Tomas Vokoun reportedly nearing a return after missing the entire season with blood clots and a pelvis injury. However, as long as Zatkoff is in net -- similar to to Bruins backup Chad Johnson -- he makes for a great start on one of the league's premiere clubs.

Pens Start Zatkoff On Saturday

News: Jeff Zatkoff will be in net for the Penguins when they face the Lightning on Saturday.
Analysis: Jeff Zatkoff has allowed just four goals over his last three games so he'll get the nod here to give Marc-Andre Fleury a rest. He is 11-4-1 with a 2.52 GAA and .918 save percentage this season.

Zatkoff Grabs Win For Pens

News: Jeff Zatkoff stopped 32 of 33 in a win over Dallas on Tuesday.
Analysis: Jeff Zatkoff played back to back games — after entering Sunday's game with Marc-Andre Fleury letting in three on 15 shots — and he has a .962 save percentage over those two matches. It's hard to imagine he'll take a lot of starts away from Fleury down the stretch, but he's certainly strung together a nice run, especially considering Fleury has let in seven in the last three and a half periods of play.

Zatkoff Will Start For Pens Tuesday

News: Jeff Zatkoff will get the nod in net Tuesday night against the Stars.
Analysis: Jeff Zatkoff, who stopped 19 of 20 shots in a relief effort Sunday against the Flyers, has played well since October. The Penguins are facing numerous injuries, but could be getting a couple starters back Tuesday.

Zatkoff Plays Well For Pens on Sunday

News: Jeff Zatkoff relieved Fleury on Sunday and stopped 19 of 20 Philadelphia shots.
Analysis: There was a school of thought saying Jeff Zatkoff should have started the game, as Fleury was making back-to-back starts for just the second time in 2013-14. Goaltending really wasn't Pittsburgh's problem so much as lackluster special teams play. Zatkoff was officially saddled with the loss, giving him a 10-4-1 mark.

Penguins' Zatkoff Stops 31 In Win

News: Jeff Zatkoff made 31 saves on 33 shots in a win over the Capitals on Monday.
Analysis: Jeff Zatkoff has not played terribly well in his backup role, as he has a .912 save percentage and 2.70 GAA. However, he's got 10 wins in 14 appearances, and playing for Pittsburgh always makes him a good bet to pick up the stray W.

Pens' Zatkoff Confirmed For Monday

News: Coach Dan Bylsma confirmed after optional skate that Jeff Zatkoff would start Monday vs. the Capitals, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: The Penguins will save No. 1 starter Marc-Andre Fleury for the second half of the team's back-to-back with the Capitals in Pittsburgh, while Jeff Zatkoff draws the road nod.

Zatkoff The Expected Starter For Pens On Monday

News: Jeff Zatkoff was the first goalie off the ice at Monday's optional skate and is expected to receive the start against the Capitals, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: The Penguins again appear poised to split up a back-to-back between Jeff Zatkoff and No. 1 goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, as they did Thursday and Friday. Zatkoff made 42 saves in Thursday's start against the Sharks, but was beaten for four goals in the 5-3 defeat.
