Avs Sign Holden To Three-Year Extension

News: Nick Holden signed a three-year, $4.95 million contract extension with the Avalanche on Tuesday, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The Avs' decision to commit to Nick Holden until the end of the 2017-18 season flew under the radar on a day in which they added Jarome Iginla and Daniel Briere to the roster, but it illustrates just how pleased the team was with the 27-year-old's performance in his first full NHL season. After serving as a healthy scratch for most of the first half, Holden finished the regular season with 10 goals and potted three more in the playoffs, while also showing improvement defensively down the stretch. He'll be counted on as a mainstay on defense over the next few seasons.

Holden Shines Despite Avs' Elimination

News: Nick Holden registered a goal in Wednesday's Game 7 loss to the Wild.
Analysis: The defenseman came away with tallies in each of the final three games of the series, chipping in four penalty minutes for good measure. He'll head into the offseason with something to feel good about, even if it offers little solace in comparison to his team bowing out early.

Avs' Holden Continuing To Supply Scoring

News: Nick Holden notched his ninth goal of the season in Tuesday's win over the Avalanche.
Analysis: Nick Holden has found himself in and out of the lineup this season, but he's remained worthy of a roster spot in deeper leagues due to his excellent 0.45 point-per-game production. He's also helped out in the defensive categories with 93 hits and 42 blocks over his 44 games.

Avs' Holden Heating Up

News: Nick Holden potted his seventh goal of the season in Sunday's win over the Senators.
Analysis: That gives the defenseman three points in four games. He's been a fairly useful fantasy asset on a per-game basis with 18 points in 40 games, but he's an occasional risk to be scratched by coach Patrick Roy.

Avalanche's Holden Scores Twice

News: Nick Holden scored two goals, including a power-play score, against the Lightning on Sunday.
Analysis: This is a nice game for Nick Holden, but he's a 26-year-old defenseman who hadn't registered an NHL point before this season. Unless he's a real late bloomer, he's not likely to contribute much fantasy value.

Points Vanishing For Avs' Holden

News: Nick Holden's assist in the Avs' final game before the break marked his first point since Jan. 21, a span of nine games.
Analysis: Nick Holden generated some buzz with a three-point showing Jan. 18 against Nashville, but he's mostly fallen back to earth since that time. The defenseman's 12 points in 31 games on the season is rather average production for his position, and his limited hit and block totals don't really separate him from any of the other waiver-wire options out there.

Avs' Holden Has Career Night

News: Nick Holden had the biggest offensive game of his NHL career Saturday night when he scored two goals and added an assist in a win over Nashville.
Analysis: He also laid a remarkable nine hits and finished plus-2. He now has 10 points in 21 games and should be monitored for possible pickup from the wire.

Avs' Holden Rejoins Team

News: Nick Holden (personal) rejoined the team for Monday's practice, Adrian Dater of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Nick Holden figures to be available for Tuesday's game against the Blackhawks if needed. He left the team over the weekend to tend to his wife, who gave birth to the couple's child.

Avs' Holden Out Saturday

News: Nick Holden (personal) will not play Saturday vs. the Wild.
Analysis: The Avalanche will be a little shorthanded defensively Saturday, as both Nick Holden and Tyson Barrie (shoulder) have been ruled out of the contest. Look for the team to dip into the AHL ranks to get some available bodies onto the blue line.

Avs Recall Holden From AHL

News: Nick Holden has been recalled from AHL Lake Erie, Adrian Dater of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Nick Holden will make his season debut in place of left wing Jamie McGinn, who will not travel with the Avs for their game in Dallas on Friday. Though not a wing by trade, coach Patrick Roy will count on his to skate on the team's fourth line with Marc-Andre Cliche and Patrick Bordeleau. Don't expect much production.

Blue Jackets' Holden Reassigned To AHL

News: The Blue Jackets have reassigned Nick Holden to AHL Springfield, The Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Nick Holden played in two games for the Blue Jackets, only averaging 8:35 minutes on ice per game with zero points. For Springfield this season, the defenseman has gathered 22 points in 44 games.

Blue Jackets Recall Holden

News: The Blue Jackets have recalled Nick Holden from AHL Springfield, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Nick Holden -- who has four goals and 22 points in 44 games with Springfield to date, gives the team some added blue line depth with fellow defender Nikita Nikitin having been placed on IR by the Blue Jackets retroactive to January 29.

Jackets' Holden To Be Recalled From AHL

News: Nick Holden will be recalled from AHL Springfield, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: The 25-year-old defenseman has posted impressive numbers with Springfield this season (four goals, 18 assists, plus-13 rating), and with his impending promotion, Nick Holden should get to expand on his limited NHL experience soon. Perhaps he'll join the team in time for Tuesday's game against the Kings.

Holden Back With Jackets

News: Nick Holden re-signed with Columbus on Monday, inking a one-year, two way contract worth $555,000 at the NHL level, according to the Jackets' Official Site.
Analysis: Nick Holden had nine points in 25 games at the AHL level last season. He did not play at the NHL level last season, mostly due to injury.

Blue Jackets Demote Holden

News: Nick Holden cleared waivers Tuesday and was assigned to AHL Springfield.
Analysis: He could be among the first defensemen recalled if and when injuries hit the Jackets' blue line.

Jackets Assign Holden to AHL

News: The Blue Jackets assigned Holden to AHL Springfield on Friday, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Holden held his own during his NHL stint, but he didn't produce any fantasy-worthy numbers, so his presence won't be missed.

Holden Makes NHL Debut For Blue Jackets

News: Holden played in his first NHL game Wednesday and didn't look out of place, blocking three shots and registering a plus-1 rating.
Analysis: He saw some time on the second power-play unit too, but at this point it doesn't look like he'll get enough shifts to be worth fantasy consideration.

Blue Jackets Recall Holden

News: The Blue Jackets will recall Holden from AHL Springfield on Tuesday, the Columbus Post-Dispatch's Aaron Portzline reports.
Analysis: He'll primarily be an insurance policy in the event that Kris Russell or Anton Stralman can't play Wednesday against Anaheim.

Columbus makes some cuts Monday

News: The Blue Jackets assigned defensemen Grant Clitsome, Nick Holden and David Liffiton and forwards Maksim Mayorov, Stefan Legein and Tommy Sestito to the Syracuse of the AHL on Monday. Forward Derek MacKenzie and defenseman Jonathan Sigalet were placed on waivers for the purpose of assignment to Syracuse.
Analysis: Mayorov, Legein and Sestito are all among the Blue Jackets top 20 prospects and could be up at some point in 2009-10. However, they are nothing more than long-term Fantasy keepers. The remaining players are pretty much organizational depth and can be ignored in Fantasy.

Holden sidelined by mono

News: The Sports Xchange reports Blue Jackets D Nick Holden, given a fighter's chance to make the club out of training camp, will miss at least the first week of camp, but probably much longer because of mononucleosis.
Analysis: This illness could definitely hinder Holden's chances of making the Blue Jackets' roster. His biggest competition for one of the final blue-line spots is Mathieu Roy. The undrafted free agent Holden played his first full professional season in 2008-09 with Syracuse of the AHL. He had 22 points (four goals) in 61 games. The 6-3, 195-pound blueliner is not high up on the prospect chart and could be in line for a career as organizational depth. Even if Holden makes the team, he isn't going to have much Fantasy appeal.

Holden has chance to make team

News: The Sports Xchange reports D Nick Holden and D Mathieu Roy could make the Blue Jackets roster with a solid training camp performance. As it stands, the Blue Jackets' top six is settled on defense, but the extra spot is up for grabs.
Analysis: The undrafted free agent played his first full professional season in 2008-09 with Syracuse of the AHL. He had 22 points (four goals) in 61 games. News: The Columbus Dispatch reports that the Blue Jackets have sent C Steve Kelly, D Nick Holden, D Jonathan Sigalet and D Kyle Wharton to Syracuse and have released F Devin DiDiomete, F Trevor Frischmon, F Jon Mirasty and F Blair Yaworski, but invited them to Syracuse training camp.
Analysis: None of these players have any Fantasy value, so continue to ignore them in all formats.
