Wings' Gustavsson Close To Being Cleared

News: Jonas Gustavsson (concussion) should get medical clearance in the near future, Ansar Khan of MLive reports.
Analysis: The Red Wings have a quandary to deal with if Jonas Gustavsson returns, as Petr Mrazek has played fairly well this season. If Gustavsson can get healthy with a few games to go on the season, he'll have a better shot at being on the playoff roster.

Wings' Gustavsson Expects To Practice Soon

News: Jonas Gustavsson (concussion) expects to return to practice in the near future, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson has been slow to come around from the concussion he suffered March 8 against the Bruins, but showed progress in the last couple days by getting back on the ice for some skating. The goalie says he is aiming to practice Wednesday to put himself on track to return before the end of the regular season. Petr Mrazek has served as the Red Wings' No. 2 netminder the last two-plus weeks while Gustavsson has been unavailable.

No Timeline For Wings' Gustavsson's Return

News: Jonas Gustavsson (concussion) is skating a little but is still feeling major symptoms, Ansar Khan of Mlive reports.
Analysis: It doesn't look like Jonas Gustavsson is returning anytime soon, as he still isn't feeling well from his March 8 concussion. Petr Mrazek has played fairly well in his absence, so the Wings are not going to rush Gustavsson along. He would need at least a week or two without symptoms and then to get back into playing shape, so this might be the end of Gustavsson's season.

Wings' Gustavsson Day-To-Day

News: Jonas Gustavsson has been experiencing concussion-like symptoms after being run into in Sunday's game, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson was pulled from the game after absorbing the hit, and is now considered day-to-day. The team recalled Petr Mrazek, so Gustavsson will be held out of Monday's contest against the Oilers at the very least.

Wings' Gustavsson Injured Sunday

News: Jonas Gustavsson, who gave way to Jimmy Howard to begin the third period of Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Bruins, suffered an unspecified injury during the contest, Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News reports.
Analysis: As a result, look for the Red Wings to recall to recall Petr Mrazek in advance of Monday's game against the Oilers. Jonas Gustavsson allowed four goals on 23 shots prior to his exit from Sunday's contest.

Red Wings Turn To Gustavsson On Sunday

News: Jonas Gustavsson will man the net Sunday against the Bruins, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson has been outstanding in his two starts since returning in late February from a long-term absence due to a shoulder injury. In matchups against two strong squads in the Kings and Predators, Gustavsson has put a stop to 64 of 67 shots (.955 save percentage), making coach Mike Babcock more willing to call his number. He's unlikely to turn the Detroit goaltending situation into a true timeshare given how well Jimmy Howard has played this season, but Gustavsson might make for an attractive spot starting option against a Bruins squad playing its second game in as many days.

Wings' Gustavsson Beats NHL's Top Team Saturday

News: Jonas Gustavsson was terrific Saturday, stopping 37 of 40 pucks in a 4-3 win over the first-place Predators.
Analysis: Particularly impressive for Detroit's backup netminder was the fact the W came on enemy ice, where the Predators were a league-best 26-4-1 heading into the contest. Jonas Gustavsson has only made six appearances this season, but with three wins in five starts to go with a 2.12 GAA and .924 save percentage during that span, he'll probably be afforded a few more opportunities by coach Mike Babcock to take the net, as starter Jimmy Howard has been rather inconsistent since returning from a groin injury on Feb. 11.

Red Wings' Gustavsson To Start Saturday

News: Jonas Gustavsson will start Saturday's game in Nashville, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: It's a bit surprising to see Jonas Gustavsson get the nod, as Detroit won't play again until Wednesday's game against the Rangers. The matchup is as tough as they come, with Nashville currently leading the race for the President's Trophy.

Wings' Gustavsson Takes Tough-Luck Loss

News: Jonas Gustavsson stopped 26 of 27 shots, but was on the wrong end of Jonathan Quick's shutout Tuesday in a 1-0 loss to the Kings.
Analysis: Despite the unfavorable decision, it's a terrific return to the pipes for Jonas Gustavsson, who was making his first start since Nov. 5 (though he did appear in relief Saturday). Nonetheless, he'll generally take a back seat to Jimmy Howard in net.

Detroit's Gustavsson Set To Start Tuesday

News: Jonas Gustavsson will get the start Tuesday against the Kings, his first start since Nov. 5, Ansar Khan of MLive reports.
Analysis: A series of injuries and a strong season from Jjmmy Howard has not allowed Jonas Gustavsson many starts this year. He did get a win in relief Saturday, so he hopes to continue that momentum on Tuesday.

WIngs' Gustavsson Enters Game, Gets Win

News: Jonas Gustavsson stopped all two shots he faced in relief of Jimmy Howard Saturday against Dallas. Gustavsson entered the game late in regulation and helped the Wings comeback to defeat the Stars 7-6 in overtime.
Analysis: Not much of a test for Jonas Gustavsson, who pulled away with a victory. The 30-year-old backup is now 2-1-1 on the season with a .910 save percentage and 2.18 GAA. Now that he's back with the Red Wings, Gustavsson makes for a decent spot start whenever Howard gets the night off.

Red Wings Recall Gustavsson From Conditioning Work

News: Jonas Gustavsson (shoulder) was recalled from his conditioning assignment at AHL Grand Rapids on Wednesday.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson looked healthy during his two games with Grand Rapids after missing nearly three months with the shoulder injury, posting a 2.02 GAA and .937 save percentage for the AHL squad. Since his final start with Grand Rapids came Wednesday, Gustavsson will serve as the backup to Petr Mrazek in his return to action Thursday. Gustavsson could be called upon to start Saturday's game against the Coyotes, which would mark his first outing with the Red Wings since Nov. 5.

Red Wings' Gustavsson Won't Return Thursday

News: Jonas Gustavsson (shoulder) will rejoin the Red Wings but will not start Thursday's game in Colorado, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson is currently on a conditioning assignment, and while he should complete the two-game stint on Wednesday, the Red Wings plan to stick with Petr Mrazek the following day. Gustavsson could be called upon for either Saturday's game in Arizona or next Wednesday's game in Pittsburgh.

Wings Loan Gustavsson To Grand Rapids

News: Jonas Gustavsson (shoulder) was activated from injured reserve and loaned to AHL Grand Rapids on Saturday for a conditioning stint.
Analysis: The Red Wings cleared up a 23-man roster spot for Jonas Gustavsson by waiving Brian Lashoff, but the goalie likely won't be available for action with the big club until next week. He'll man the net Saturday for Grand Rapids in what will mark his first game in three months. The conditioning stint is only expected to last one game, with Tom McCollum set to be reassigned to the AHL club once Gustavsson rejoins the Red Wings. Gustavsson's first start could come as soon as Thursday's game against the Avalanche.

Red Wings' Gustavsson To Play In Conditioning Game

News: Jonas Gustavsson (shoulder) will play a conditioning stint game with AHL Grand Rapids on Saturday, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: With this development, it appears as though Jonas Gustavsson is on the brink of making a return to the Red Wings' active roster. However, it's quite possible that he'll play in more than one game with AHL Grand Rapids before being activated, as he hasn't played in an NHL game since Nov. 5. At this point in time it remains unclear how playing time will be split between Peter Mrazek and Gustavsson when the 30-year-old netminder is finally able to return to the Wings' active roster.

Red WIngs' Gustavsson Getting Closer

News: Jonas Gustavsson (shoulder) practice Monday, and he may be activated from injured reserve within the next few days, The Detroit News reports.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson won't be back for Tuesday's game against the Panthers, but he may stand a chance to return for Thursday's contest in Tampa Bay. He seems to be a couple of weeks ahead of Jimmy Howard (groin), which means the Red Wings don't need to make an immediate decision on whether Gustavsson or Peter Mrazek will serve as Howard's top backup down the stretch. It's also unclear how the playing time will be split between Mrazek and Gustavsson until Howard returns.

Red Wings' Gustavsson (Shoulder) Back Practicing

News: Jonas Gustavsson (shoulder) has been able to practice for the last few weeks, but isn't projected to return until shortly after the NHL All-Star break, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson has been out of commission since Nov. 5, when he dislocated his left shoulder during a game. His absence, along with Jimmy Howard's, has resulted in the Red Wings pinning their hopes on youngster Petr Mrazek, who will serve as the team's primary netminder for the next several games. If Gustavsson ends up beating Howard back from injured reserve, he could have a shot at usurping Mrazek for No. 1 duties on a short-term basis.

Red Wings' Gustavsson Practices Tuesday

News: Jonas Gustavsson (shoulder) practiced with the team Tuesday, Dana Wakiji of FOX Sports Detroit reports.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson still doesn't have a timetable for his return from the dislocated shoulder, but that could come within the next couple days now that he's back practicing with the team. He's been out since early November with the injury, so once the netminder closes in on 100 percent health, he could require an AHL conditioning assignment.

Red Wings' Gustavsson Still Weeks Away

News: Jonas Gustavsson (shoulder) was on the ice earlier this week for conditioning work, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson is still considered multiple weeks away from a return from injured reserve. The netminder said he hasn't been able to test out his shoulder yet, making a firmer timetable for his return difficult to pin down at the moment.

Wings' Gustavsson Out Approximately Two Months

News: Jonas Gustavsson is expected to miss about two months with a dislocated shoulder, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson doesn't plan to have surgery at this point, but will miss an extended period of time because of the injury. Petr Mrazek should continue in the backup duties to Jimmy Howard until he returns.

Wings' Gustavsson Has Separated Shoulder

News: Jonas Gustavsson separated his shoulder in Wednesday's matchup with the Rangers and will be out several weeks, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports. The Red Wings placed him on injured reserve.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson wasn't getting many starts anyway because of how well Jimmy Howard is playing, but it's still a major setback for him. Petr Mrazek will take his place as the backup.

Red Wings' Gustavsson Suffers Shoulder Injury

News: Jonas Gustavsson suffered a shoulder injury during Wednesday's game and will be out "a while," Helene St. James of The Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: It's too early to determine exactly how long Jonas Gustavsson will be out, but it appears he is facing an extended absence. Petr Mrazek will be called up to take over the backup goalie duties behind Jimmy Howard.

Wings' Gustavsson Set To Start Wednesday

News: Jonas Gustavsson will be between the pipes Wednesday against the Rangers, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson is expected to match up against 2014 Swedish Olympic teammate Henrik Lundqvist, who won all three of his starts against the Red Wings last season, shutting them out twice. Coming away with the victory Wednesday could be too much to ask from Gustavsson, but he's fared well in his previous two starts this season against respectable opponents in the Flyers and Maple Leafs, going 1-1 with a 1.45 GAA and .935 save percentage.

Wings' Monster Yields Three Goals On 16 Shots

News: Jonas Gustavsson allowed three goals on 16 shots in Detroit's 4-2 loss to the Flyers on Saturday night.
Analysis: Peee-yew. The Flyers could barely muster a decent rush all night long, but they still managed to put three pucks behind the Monster. For all his potential, he's not going to usurp Jimmy Howard with play like this.

Detroit To Start Gustavsson On Saturday

News: Jonas Gustavsson will receive the start in goal Saturday against the Flyers, Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News reports.
Analysis: The Red Wings will turn to Jonas Gustavsson as the team looks to snap its long losing streak in Philadelphia, a drought that dates back all the way to when the two squads met in the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals. With a 2-3-2 record and several key defensemen missing, this season's edition of the Flyers wouldn't seem to represent a formidable adversary for Gustavsson, who shut out the Maple Leafs in his first start of the season a week earlier.
