Wings Re-Sign Gustavsson

News: Jonas Gustavsson has signed a one-year, $1.85 million deal with the Red Wings, Chuck Pleiness of the Macomb Daily reports.
Analysis: As a result, Jonas Gustavsson, who recorded a 16-5-4 record in 27 games this past season, while recording a 2.63 GAA and .907 save percentage, will reprise his role as Jimmy Howard's top backup in 2014-15.

Gustavsson, Wings Bow Out

News: Jonas Gustavsson allowed three goals on 32 shots in Saturday's Game 5 season-edning loss to Boston in their Atlantic Division semifinal series.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson was dealt a rough situation when he filled in for Jimmy Howard (illness) beginning in Game 4. The Monster did valiantly to keep the Wings in the series' final two games against Boston, but the six goals he allowed in his two starts weren't enough to allow Detroit to extend the series.

Red Wings To Start Gustavsson Saturday

News: Jonas Gustavsson will start in Saturday's Game 5 against the Bruins, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson surprisingly got the start in Thursday's Game 4 after teammate Jimmy Howard (illness) was a late scratch. In Howard's stead, Gustavsson notched 37 saves, but allowed three goals. Nonetheless, Gustavsson will get another start Saturday, this time with Detroit's season on the line.

Gustavsson, Wings Downed In Game 4

News: Jonas Gustavsson made 37 stops in Jimmy Howard's stead Thursday, but ended up falling, 3-2, against the Bruins in overtime.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson and the Wings coughed up a 2-0 lead, then ended up losing in the extra frame, so while he posted good stats, he clearly wasn't quite good enough. Howard missed this game with the flu and will likely return for Game 5 with the Wings fighting for their playoff lives.

Red Wings' Gustavsson Starts Game 4

News: Jonas Gustavsson will start in place of teammate Jimmy Howard at goalie in Thursday's Game 4 against the Bruins, NHL.com's Dan Rosen reports.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson will make his first career playoff start as a result of Howard missing Thursday's game with the flu. In nine career games versus Boston, Gustavsson is 4-4-1 with a 3.12 GAA and .893 save percentage.

Wings' Gustavsson Good To Go

News: Jonas Gustavsson (shoulder) will be available for Thursday's Game 1 against the Bruins, the Detroit News reports.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard is expected to get the start Thursday, but it's good news that Jonas Gustavsson will be there to back him up. Gustavsson finished the regular season with a 16-5-4 record, a .907 save percentage, and a 2.63 GAA in 27 appearances.

Red Wings' Gustavsson Unlikely To Play Friday

News: Jonas Gustavsson is unlikely to play Friday due to an unspecified injury suffered in Wednesday's game, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: It's not clear what type of setback Jonas Gustavsson is dealing with, but he did not take part in Friday's morning skate, and thus will likely sit out Friday night. Jared Coreau is expected to serve as Jimmy Howard's backup in Gustavsson's place.

Undisclosed Injury For Wings' Gustavsson

News: Jonas Gustavsson may have sustained an injury during Wednesday's start against the Penguins, Chuck Pleiness of the Macomb Daily reports.
Analysis: The Red Wings haven't released any news regarding Jonas Gustavsson's condition, but the team's recall of Petr Mrazek from AHL Grand Rapids suggests Gustavsson might have played hurt Wednesday against the Penguins. More about Gustavsson's status should be known following Friday's morning skate.

Wings' Gustavsson Drops Shootout Decision

News: Jonas Gustavsson gave up three goals on 24 shot attempts before ultimately falling in a shootout Wednesday vs. the Penguins.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson very narrowly turned away Jussi Jokinen's shootout game-winner by aggressively knocking the puck away from the forward's stick, but the rubber bounced high over the goalie for the decisive score. Gustavsson could still be called upon to start one of the team's final two regular season games with their playoff spot secure.

Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson is 16-5-3 on the season, with a .909 save percentage and a 2.62 GAA. He'll give starter Jimmy Howard a break Wednesday as the Wings play their second game in as many nights.

Wings' Gustavsson Takes Loss Saturday

News: Jonas Gustavsson stopped 21 of 26 shots in Saturday's loss to the Canadiens.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson fell into a 3-0 hole after two periods and nearly picked up the backdoor win after his mates rallied for three unanswered goals to tie the score in the third. However, Gustavsson quickly coughed up the tie minutes later, dropping his record to 16-5-3 on the season.

Red Wings' Gustavsson To Start Saturday

News: Jonas Gustavsson will start Saturday's game against the Canadiens, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Regular goaltender Jimmy Howard will start Friday night, but Jonas Gustavsson will get the nod Saturday to prevent Howard from playing back-to-back nights. Gustavsson will face a tough test in the Canadiens, but he is a good bet for a win, having gone 16-4-3 in 25 games this season.

Red Wings' Gustavsson Stops 26 In Win

News: Jonas Gustavsson made 26 saves on 28 shots in a win over the Lightning on Sunday.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson has won his last three starts, but those three starts took place in over a month's time. Jimmy Howard is carrying the load as the Wings try and cling to a playoff spot.

Detroit's Gustavsson To Start Sunday

News: Jonas Gustavsson will get the start in net Sunday, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard has started quite a few games in a row, so on the second day of a back to back, Jonas Gustavsson will get the call. That's not a bad move, either, as Gustavsson has put together a terrific season, with a 15-4-3 record.

Red Wings' Gustavsson Looks Ready To Back Up

News: Jonas Gustavsson (groin) appears set to back up Jimmy Howard for Thursday's game vs. the Penguins, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Howard manned the starter's net at morning skate while Jonas Gustavsson was at the opposite end, with No. 3 goalie Petr Mrazek standing off to the side. This would seem to signal Gustavsson's availability in the lineup, though he likely won't see the ice Thursday unless Howard gets pulled early. Gustavsson has been scratched from the Detroit lineup in every game since starting a March 8 win over the Devils.

Wings' Gustavsson Unlikely For Friday

News: Jonas Gustavsson (groin) left the ice early during Thursday's practice, suggesting he won't be available Friday vs. the Oilers, Chuck Pleiness of the Macomb Daily reports.
Analysis: The Red Wings were down to just one healthy goalie (Petr Mrazek) during Tuesday's loss to the Blue Jackets with Jimmy Howard feeling under the weather and Jonas Gustavsson nursing the groin injury. While Gustavsson probably won't be back Friday, Howard will likely be healthy at that point, lessening the need for the Wings to rush Gustavsson into action when he's less than 100 percent healthy.

Red Wings' Gustavsson Practices Tuesday

News: Jonas Gustavsson (groin) was back at practice Tuesday, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Groin issues are nothing new for Jonas Gustavsson, but he's convinced this latest ailment is only a minor setback and shouldn't keep him out of commission for now. He won't be available for Tuesday's game vs. the Blue Jackets, but could return at some point over the weekend.

Wings' Gustavsson Makes 21 Saves In Friday's Win

News: Jonas Gustavsson stopped just 21 of 25 shots but the Wings turned it around and beat the Devils 7-4 on Friday.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson wasn't exactly sharp in this one but with the Wings scoring seven times of their own, he was able to walk away victorious. Expect to see Jimmy Howard back in net for Detroit's next game.

Red Wings' Gustavsson Tending To Sore Groin

News: Jonas Gustavsson is nursing a sore groin, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Though Jonas Gustavsson is considered day-to-day with the ailment, it's apparently concerning enough for the team to justify recalling Petr Mrazek from AHL Grand Rapids. The injury will likely keep Gustavsson in the press box for Sunday's game vs. the Rangers, but the team will likely wait and see how far he's progressed by early next week before deciding whether or not to place him on injured reserve.

News: Jonas Gustavsson will be between the pipes for Friday's game against the Devils, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard will get the night off in the second game of a back-to-back. Jonas Gustavsson has both played well and received plenty of support this season, with a 14-4-3 record to show for his own effort and that of his teammates.

Wings' Gustavsson Stands Tall In Win

News: Jonas Gustavsson made 37 saves on 38 shots in Thursday's 6-1 rout of the Senators.
Analysis: Thanks to the return of Jimmy Howard and the Olympics, this was Jonas Gustavsson's first win in more than a month. He hadn't come away with a win since Jan. 24, but had only appeared in three games (two starts) in that span.

Red Wings Turn To Gustavsson On Thursday

News: Jonas Gustavsson will be in the crease Thursday against the Senators.
Analysis: With Jimmy Howard receiving the starting nod in Wednesday's win over the Canadiens, Jonas Gustavsson will come on to relieve him for the second game of the back-to-back. Gustavsson left his most recent start Feb. 3 after just one period due to a spell of dizziness, but he returned to practice a day later and hasn't experienced any subsequent concussion symptoms.

Wings' Gustavsson To Practice Wednesday

News: Jonas Gustavsson (illness) will practice Wednesday, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: After leaving Monday's game following a spell of lightheadedness, Jonas Gustavsson reiterated Tuesday that he was fine and indicated he'll be able to back up Jimmy Howard when the team faces the Panthers on Thursday. GM Ken Holland has already stated the team won't call up another goalie as insurance for Gustavsson, seemingly supporting the goalie's claims that he's good to go.

Wings' Gustavsson To Be Evaluated Tuesday

News: Coach Mike Babcock said Jonas Gustavsson was "fine" after Monday's game in which the goalie left with dizziness, but he will be evaluated Tuesday, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson is likely just dealing with illness symptoms, but the Wings want to make sure it's nothing more. He should be available for Thursday's game barring any surprises.

Red Wings' Gustavsson Exits With Dizziness

News: Jonas Gustavsson felt dizzy during intermession and did not return to the net for the second period of Monday's game against the Canucks, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: After stopping all eight shots that he faced in the first period, Jonas Gustavsson was replaced by Jimmy Howard coming out of the intermission. While the Red Wings didn't officially rule Gustavsson out from returning, it seems likely that the goaltender is dealing with some kind of illness.
