Lightning Re-Sign Barberio

News: Mark Barberio re-signed with the Lightning on a one-year, one-way contract Friday, Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune reports.
Analysis: Mark Barberio functioned primarily as a third-pairing defenseman or healthy scratch for the Bolts last season, logging five goals, five assists and a plus-10 rating over 49 games. He didn't supplement the lack of scoring with much production on the defensive end (28 hits, 38 blocks), making him largely a non-entity for fantasy purposes.

Bolts' Barberio: Scratched Nine Of Last 11 Games

News: Mark Barberio has played in just two of the Lightning's last 11 games. He is minus-2 with four SOG in those two games.
Analysis: He averaged a little over 15 minutes of ice in those two games, but clearly hasn't shown enough to stay in the Bolts' bottom pairing as they push toward the postseason. Mark Barberio has offensive talent, but he can't help you if he's not on the ice.

Bolts' Barberio: Fourth Goal In Last Four Games

News: Mark Barberio scored a goal Tuesday night and now has four in his last four games. He also has five points in that same span.
Analysis: He only has nine points this season (35 games), but five have come in the last five. His game appears to be turning the corner -- he can help you in the short term and may have longer term value, too.

Bolts' Barberio Earning His Keep

News: Mark Barberio's play this season has improved so much that Lightning head coach Jon Cooper is having a hard time taking him out of the lineup. "I think the game is slowing down for him a little bit, which you hope it does for a lot of the rookies and clearly he is taken advantage of it. So it's really hard to pull him out of the lineup right now ... He is completely engaged in the game. He's not letting the game come to him, he's going after the game."
Analysis: He was a healthy scratch for 10 of the first 12 games this season and in and out of the lineup for the next two months, a pattern that he also followed in his first year in the AHL. And like his first year in the AHL, Mark Barberio has picked up his game by being more active with the puck in the offensive zone. His confidence in the AHL grew so much he won defenseman of the year there in the second year. We're not suggesting that's remotely possible here, but there's a strong chance his game is going to take a jump offensively in 2014-15.

Bolts' Barberio: Four Points In Last Four Games

News: Mark Barberio scored a goal in Saturday's win over Colorado. He now has four points, including three goals, in his last four games.
Analysis: Mark Barberio comes with a high-end offensive pedigree, at least in the AHL, but has struggled to find his groove in Tampa Bay. But he's looking a whole lot more comfortable right now and has delivered half of his season total in points in those four games (eight in 34). He may be able to help you as a waiver pickup and should be monitored by owners in dynasty leagues.

Bolts' Barberio: First Two NHL Goals

News: Mark Barberio scored his first two career NHL goals in Sunday's win over Carolina. One of the goals came on the power play.
Analysis: Now he can get a haircut -- he promised himself two years ago that he wouldn't cut his hair until he first made the NHL and then scored a goal there. "I was just going to let it grow, and I think it's gotten a little too long," joked Mark Barberio. He has three points in his last two games.

Barberio Struggles To Find Consistency In Tampa

News: Mark Barberio, who has been a frequent healthy scratch of late, has struggled with consistency. "I know there are some games I'm feeling good and plays are working, and other times I'm a bit jittery or nervous with the puck," he told the Tampa Bay Times.
Analysis: Mark Barberio comes with a strong pedigree, at least when it comes to AHL performance, but he has struggled to find his game in the NHL. He has just two assists in 21 NHL games this season. It remains to be seen how his game will grow, but he is still young -- he turns 24 in late March. Continue to monitor his game.

Bolts' Barberio Returns To Ice

News: Mark Barberio (upper body) logged 18:11 worth of ice time in Thursday's loss to the Sharks.
Analysis: The defenseman didn't report any setbacks after the game and will presumably be a lineup mainstay moving forward. He's a scarce contributor on the offensive end, earning most of his fantasy value in the form of TOI, hits and blocks.

Bolts' Barberio: Left Arm Injury?

News: Mark Barberio's (upper body) injury is thought to be to his left arm, as he was on the ice on Saturday morning holding his stick using just his right hand, reports the Tampa Tribune.
Analysis: The offensive-minded defender has two helpers in eight games. Keep him benched for now -- this could be a hand or wrist injury. He may return soon, but both of those types of injuries would impair his ability to put up points.

Lightning's Barberio To Sit Out Saturday

News: Mark Barberio (upper body) will not play Saturday vs. the Coyotes, Damian Cristodero of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis: Mark Barberio wasn't expected to suit up Saturday after he failed to take part in Friday's practice. Fortunately, the Bolts will get Sami Salo back from injury Saturday night, so the team should still be well-equipped to match up against the Coyotes' quality offensive attack.

Bolts' Barberio Misses Practice Friday

News: Mark Barberio missed Friday's practice with an undisclosed injury, Damian Cristodero of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis: The team called Mark Barberio's day off a "maintenance day," so it sounds likely that he'll still be able to play Saturday. Barberio was sidelined for the final 12 minutes of Thursday's win over the Ducks due to the injury, but it may have just been as a precaution since the Lightning were enjoying a big lead at the time.

Tampa's Barberio Gets First NHL Point

News: Mark Barberio picked up his first NHL point -- an assist -- in Saturday's win over the Blues.
Analysis: It's just his third game of the season, but he'll be able to tell his grandkids that he set up Steven Stamkos. Mark Barberio has tremendous potential, but he's currently struggle to get ice time in Tampa. No need to add him just yet.

Lightning' Barberio Makes Team

News: Mark Barberio is expected to open the season on the Lightning's season-opening roster, the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis: Mark Barberio saw limited action in two games with the Lightning last season after spending 73 games with AHL Syracuse. In his minor league games, he provided a solid scoring touch from a defensive position with eight goals and 34 assists. He will give the Lightning a young option to help shore up a suspect defense from a season ago.

Lightning's Barberio Re-Signs

News: Mark Barberio has re-signed with the Lightning on a one-year, two-way deal.
Analysis: Mark Barberio saw his first NHL action last season, skating in two games for Tampa. He tallied eight goals and 42 points in 74 AHL games, and will likely be on the roster bubble at best heading in to training camp. However, he's got a load of offensive skills and could find his way onto the Lightning power play at some point.

Lightning Send Down Barberio

News: Mark Barberio has been sent down to AHL Syracuse, Damian Cristodero of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis: Mark Barberio's services were no longer needed by the Lightning after Victor Hedman returned from his lower-body injury.

Bolts Recall Barberio

News: The Lightning recalled Mark Barberio from AHL Syracuse on Monday.
Analysis: The defenseman will replace Matt Taormina – who was reassigned Monday -- on the Bolts roster. Mark Barberio has racked up a line of 8/32/40 in 70 games with the Crunch this season.

Bolts' Prospect Barberio: Impressive Season

News: Mark Barberio could press for a roster spot with Tampa Bay come September after his second straight strong AHL season.
Analysis: He finished 2010-11 with nine goals and 31 points, the most goals and points by a rookie defender in Norfolk (AHL) history. And his 61 points (13 goals, 48 assists) this season led the entire corps of AHL defensemen and earned him the Eddie Shore award for the league's most outstanding defenseman. He's been able to keep his great mobility as he has thickened his body and improved his defensive game, and the Bolts sorely need support on the back end. Keep his name in mind for draft day as a late-round steal.
