Preds, Ellis Still At Odds Over New Contract

News: Preds GM David Poile addressed Ryan Ellis' contract situation Saturday, saying the main stumbling block continues to be money, according to the Tennessean. "Unfortunately at this time we have not agreed what they think and what we think is fair compensation," Poile said. "We want [Ellis]. We are not trading him, we really like him. We really like the way he played last year. It's just a disagreement on dollars."
Analysis: Ryan Ellis, who has missed the first two days of training camp so far, played in 80 games last season for and finished with 27 points - his highest full season total to date. And while there is still plenty of time left to get a deal done before the start of the season, the clock is ticking. Not only is he missing out on conditioning drills and scrimmages, the more Ellis misses of training camp, the greater the chances of some other defenseman impressing the coaching staff and grabbing a roster spot that might otherwise go to Ellis. Bottom line, we think Ellis will get signed by the start of the regular season, but what his role on the team will be is anybody's guess. He's a risky fantasy pick right now, until all of the above gets sorted out.

Preds' Ellis Still Unsigned

News: Ryan Ellis and the Predators are reportedly not close to signing a new contract, according to Josh Cooper of the Tennessean.
Analysis: Ryan Ellis, currently a restricted free agent, finally put together a decent season last year, posting 27 points (6G, 21A) in 80 games. However, his development has still been far too slow for the Preds' liking, considering his stellar offensive contributions in junior (300+ points in four seasons from 2007-2011). Assuming the two sides can agree on a deal for the upcoming season, Ellis will likely return to his usual role as a second-pairing, second power play defenseman. However, the Preds are well-stocked with blue line talent, so they are likely not in a huge rush to get a deal done with Ellis if it means overpaying him. For fantasy purposes, be sure to keep him off your draft lists as long as he remains unsigned.

Two Points For Preds' Ellis In Finale

News: Ryan Ellis supplied a goal and an assist in Sunday's season finale against the Wild.
Analysis: Ryan Ellis produced reliably for fantasy players down the stretch, accumulating two goals, two assists and a plus-7 rating over his final five games. He's one of several Nashville defensemen to produce well on the offensive end this season, accumulating six goals and 21 assists over 80 contests.

Assists Trickling In For Preds' Ellis

News: Ryan Ellis has recorded three assists over his last two games.
Analysis: The blueliner has benefited from a significant uptick in ice time from his 15:33 average TOI for the season, but it's hard to envision him continuing such production. Ryan Ellis still only has 22 points in 71 games, and will probably be counted on to help out more defensively with the Preds surrendering four or more goals in four of their last six games.

Preds' Ellis Scores Game-Winner Friday

News: Ryan Ellis scored his fourth goal of the season as the Predators defeated the Blackhawks 3-2 on Friday.
Analysis: The defenseman scored just 45 seconds into the third period to put Nashville up 3-1 and that ultimately proved to be the game-winner. With just four goals and 15 assists through 65 games, he's obviously not known for his scoring touch, but he does now have two points in his last three games.

Preds' Ellis Not Scoring Much

News: Ryan Ellis has three goals and 13 assists in 57 games so far this season.
Analysis: The blueliner is more of a stay-at-home type, and was scoreless in the nine games leading up to the Olympic break. He's a lot more valuable to the Predators at this point as a steady defender than he is in fantasy leagues.

Ellis's Two Points Lead Preds To Win

News: Ryan Ellis scored his second goal of the year and added an assist in Tuesday's win over Calgary.
Analysis: Ryan Ellis opened Nashville's three-goal flurry with the marker less than a minute into the third period, and assisted on Viktor Stalberg's goal about 10 minutes later. It's been a disappointing season for the undersized, but supremely talented blueliner, though he's got three points to show for his last three games. Unfortunately, inconsistency has been the name of the game for Ellis this year. He's failed to take a shot on goal in six of his last nine games, but has 11 shots in the other three contests combined.

Ellis Contributing Only Modestly For Preds

News: Ryan Ellis failed to hit the score sheet during Monday's 6-4 win over the Red Wings, but skated 14:08, including 3:07 on the power play.
Analysis: With 11 points in 38 games thus far, Ryan Ellis has tied his career best from two seasons ago.  The problem is, the smallish defender (5-11, 175) doesn't play an overly physical game, and thus does not produce much in the secondary stat categories such as PIM or hits. He doesn't even block very many shots –- just 36 for the season to date. On the positive side, Ellis does have a plus-1 rating, which isn't bad; the Preds have only five players currently in positive territory. Bottom line, Ellis still has a long way to go to fulfill the promise he held as a high-scoring junior defenseman in the OHL, with more than 300 points over four seasons with the Windsor Spitfires. He's a very speculative fantasy play at the present time.

Preds' Ellis Helps Out In Win Over Blue Jackets

News: Ryan Ellis was moved up to the second defensive pairing with Kevin Klein during Wednesday's 4-0 win over Columbus, the Tennessean reports. He skated a season-high 18:12 and recorded a pair of assists.
Analysis: It was a great showing from Ryan Ellis, who had just five points in 22 games entering Wednesday's game. Ellis has always had the offensive skills to be a successful, point-producing defenseman in the NHL, however his smallish size (5-10, 180) has been the main knock against him - he regularly gets knocked off the puck too easily by bigger opponents. Bottom line, don't go rushing out to pick him up just yet - you need to see him string a few games like this together before taking a flyer on him.

Diminishing Ice Time For Preds' Ellis

News: Ryan Ellis skated just 10:37 in Sunday's 3-1 win over Winnipeg, and failed to hit the scoresheet for the third straight game.
Analysis: Earlier this month, Ryan Ellis was paired briefly with Shea Weber on the Preds' top defensive pairing, but that assignment has since gone to rookie Seth Jones who has three points in his last five games. Needless to say, Ellis is looking more and more like the odd man out on the Preds' blue line this season. He currently has little to no value in all but the deepest fantasy formats.

Preds' Ellis Notches Goal, Assist In Win

News: Ryan Ellis scored a goal and added an assist in Saturday's win over the Islanders.
Analysis: Scoring by the Preds' defensemen crew had practically been non-existent in the previous four games, but the flood gates opened Saturday, with Ryan Ellis leading the way. He assisted on Patric Hornqvist's goal with a minute left in the second period to tie the game at two apiece before scoring the game-winning in the final frame.

Preds' Ellis Promoted To Top Defensive Pairing

News: With teammate Roman Josi out with a concussion, Ryan Ellis is expected to skate with Shea Weber on the Preds' top defensive pairing Tuesday against the Wild, the Tennessean's Josh Cooper reports.
Analysis: This represents a major opportunity for Ryan Ellis, who was a healthy scratch for the Preds' first two games of the season. A first-round pick in 2009, Ellis has failed to have much of an impact at the pro level after a record-breaking career as a junior. If Ellis shows some chemistry with Weber, he could revive his once-promising career, not to mention his fantasy value. Keep a close eye on this situation as it develops.

Preds' Ellis Facing High Expectations This Season

News: Coach Barry Trotz is hoping Ryan Ellis can contribute more offensively this season, according to the Tennessean. "Last year [Ellis] concentrated so much on defending and there wasn't much offense out of him," Trotz said. "Just a healthy balance is what I need."
Analysis: After scoring more than 300 points in his OHL junior career, Ryan Ellis has had a tougher time since. One of the smaller players in the league (5-10, 175), Ellis has had trouble adjusting to the bigger, stronger players in both the AHL and NHL, and his point totals have taken a hit because of it (just 17 points in 64 games for the Preds over the last two seasons). This season, with the arrival of Seth Jones (6-3, 201) Ellis could have an even tougher time carving out a place for himself on the Preds' blue line. Steer clear for now until his role on the team becomes more well-defined.

Preds' Ellis At Risk For Reduced Role Next Season

News: Ryan Ellis could be the odd man out on the Predators' blue line next season, according to the Josh Cooper of The Tennessean.
Analysis: With the Preds' first-round draft pick Seth Jones expected to open the season with the big club, Ryan Ellis could find himself as little more than a depth player come October. From 2007 to 2011, Ellis proved to be an outstanding offensive d-man in junior (314 points in 226 games over four seasons with OHL Windsor), but that success has not translated to the NHL, where he has just 17 points in 64 games over the last two seasons. In the right situation he could be a solid fantasy contributor, but he needs to find his 'A' game first.

Preds' Ellis Sent To AHL MIlwaukee

News: The Predators assigned Ryan Ellis to AHL Milwaukee on Saturday, the Tennessean's Joshua Cooper reports.
Analysis: Ryan Ellis was recalled for one game and saw 20:11 of ice time Thursday night, but now he is headed back to Milwaukee. He has two goals and six points in 32 games with the Predators this season.

Predators Recall Ellis From AHL

News: Ryan Ellis has been recalled to join the Predators, John Glennon of The Tennesean reports.
Analysis: Ryan Ellis will give the Predators depth on the blue line as they try to make up ground to get into the playoffs. Ellis has played in 31 games this season with the Predators and has two goals to go along with four assists.

Possible Benching For Preds' Ellis?

News: Ryan Ellis is currently at risk of being scratched from the lineup in favor of Jonathon Blum, reports the Tennessean.
Analysis: Ryan Ellis and blue line partner Scott Hannan are a combined minus-8 in their last two games, something that has not gone unnoticed by coach Barry Trotz. "Together they're not working," Trotz said. "We're going to pull them apart." At first glance, it appears that Hannan, who is a minus-11 on the season, might be the one to get the hook in favor of Blum, but monitor closely in case Ellis winds up drawing the short straw.

Preds' Ellis Not Producing As Expected This Season

News: Ryan Ellis has just six points (2G, 4A) in 25 games so far this season and has not hit the scoresheet in his last 11 games.
Analysis: Ryan Ellis' results thus far have to be considered a huge disappointment for a guy who was listed as one of the favorites to step into Ryan Suter's shoes this season. Ellis now routinely plays on the Preds' third defensive pairing and has not seen any real power play time for the past four games. If you were counting on Ellis to finally break through this season, it looks like you're going to have to put those expectations on hold for a while longer.

Preds' Ellis Notches Two Points

News: Ryan Ellis scored a power-play goal and added an assist Tuesday in a win over St. Louis.
Analysis: The big-time defense prospect got off to a fine start with points in the first two games this year, but was held scoreless over six games between then and Tuesday's bust-out. Although he lacks ideal NHL size, Ryan Ellis has major offensive upside as a first-round pick and former 100-point scorer from the blue line in juniors.

Preds' Ellis Still Battling Wrist Injury

News: Ryan Ellis is still battling a wrist injury suffered during the lockout, according to the Tennessean. "It's a gradual thing that gets better over time," Ellis said Friday. "It's not like it's going to be perfect one day, but it has been feeling good, and everything has been coming together [at AHL Milwaukee]."
Analysis: The Preds appear to be set with Shea Weber, Hal Gill, Kevin Klein and Roman Josi as their top four defenders this season, so Ryan Ellis will likely find himself battling the likes of Jonathon Blum, Teemu Laakso and Scott Hannan for a spot on the third d-man pairing. Ellis saw limited duty for the Preds last season, recording 11 points in 32 games.

Preds' Ellis Struggling Since Return From Wrist Injury

News: Ryan Ellis has zero goals and just six assists in six games since returning from a wrist injury in late November, reports the Tennessean.
Analysis: "He's doing a lot of good things," Admirals coach Dean Evason said of Ryan Ellis this week. "Our power play has struggled of late, which his numbers reflected, but he's had some chances. I think his wrist injury has hurt his shooting ability right now. But he's still making plays. We have to finish a little bit more on the PP, then his numbers would be better." Although he's struggling right now, this doesn't sound like something that will affect Ellis in the long term. He should still be considered one of the Preds' top four defenders once NHL play resumes.

Preds' Ellis Practicing In Minors Despite Broken Wrist

News: Ryan Ellis (wrist) has resumed practicing, reports the Tennessean.
Analysis: It will likely be at least a few more weeks of recovery for Ryan Ellis, but the progress he's showing is encouraging. Barring any setbacks, he should be back to full health when (if) the lockout ends and NHL play resumes.

Preds' Ellis Recovering From Broken Wrist

News: Ryan Ellis (broken wrist) is still in a cast but has resumed skating, according to the Tennessean.
Analysis: This is a great example of how official announcements regarding player injuries fall by the wayside during a work stoppage. Playing for AHL Milwaukee, Ryan Ellis reportedly suffered the injury back in September during a preseason scrimmage. However, because he's technically not playing for the Preds right now, there was no formal announcement by the team. In any event, according to Admirals coach Dean Evason, "[Ellis] is skating, but he's still in a cast. Not sure exactly what his time-frame is, but it should be a few weeks more."

Preds' Ellis Headed To Minors During Lockout

News: Ryan Ellis will play for AHL Milwaukee during the NHL lockout, according to the Tennessean.
Analysis: "Guys that have been in the league for a long time, they're going to have to sit and wait or go to a league in Europe," said Ryan Ellis, who scored 11 points in 32 games in his rookie season last year. "We're going to have a chance to polish up. The AHL is going to be a great league this year." With some of the NHL's top young players headed to the minors, the competition level with be stepped up a notch or two, which should leave Ellis in great shape once the NHL season resumes.
