Blues' Gunnarsson Back In Saturday

News: Coach Ken Hitchcock confirmed that Carl Gunnarsson (upper body) will play Saturday against the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: While the return of Kevin Shattenkirk (abdominal surgery) from a two-month absence Saturday will capture most of the headlines, Carl Gunnarsson's return is still of high importance to the Blues. With goalie Brian Elliott struggling in recent outings, having an accomplished shot blocker like Gunnarsson back in the trenches should aid the team's play in the net. However, from a fantasy perspective, Gunnarsson doesn't offer much to get excited about, as his stay-at-home tendencies prevent him from accumulating points with much regularity.

Blues' Gunnarsson Trending Toward Return

News: Carl Gunnarsson (upper body) skated on the top defensive pairing with Alex Pietrangelo during Friday's practice, NHL.com's Lou Korac reports.
Analysis: This would seem to add further validation to the reports earlier in the week that Carl Gunnarsson is on track to return to the lineup Saturday against the Blue Jackets following a two-game absence. Expect coach Ken Hitchcock to confirm the blueliner's return to the lineup after Saturday's morning skate.

Blues' Gunnarsson Expected To Be Ready For Weekend

News: Carl Gunnarsson (upper body) is expected to return to the Blues' lineup Saturday versus the Blue Jackets, Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: The Blues' decision to send Petteri Lindbohm back to AHL Chicago on Wednesday seems to indicate that Carl Gunnarsson will be available after missing the last two games with the injury. With Gunnarsson likely back over the weekend and Kevin Shattenkirk also expected to return after a lengthy absence, the Blues should be at full strength on the blue line entering the final couple weeks of the season.

Blues' Gunnarsson Out Tuesday

News: Carl Gunnarsson (upper body) won't play against the Penguins on Tuesday, the Blues' official site reports.
Analysis: On the plus side, Carl Gunnarsson skated Tuesday, with coach Ken Hitchcock indicating that he hopes to have the blueliner back in action this weekend.

Blues' Gunnarsson Iffy For Tuesday

News: Carl Gunnarsson (upper body) is a game-time decision for Tuesday's game against the Penguins, NHL.com's Lou Korac reports.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson, who was forced out of Saturday's game against the Wild, missed Sunday's game against Detroit, but given that he is viewed as a game-time decision for Tuesday's tilt, his upper-body injury is evidently not a major issue.

Blues' Gunnarsson (Upper Body) Out Sunday

News: Carl Gunnarsson (upper body) was not on the ice for pregame warmups Sunday, indicating he will miss the tilt with the Red Wings, Lou Korac of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson exited Saturday's game due to the injury, and it will reportedly cost him Sunday's contest as well. Both Chris Butler and Petteri Lindbohm were on the ice, indicating one of the two will take his spot in the lineup. His next chance to return will come Tuesday against the Penguins.

Blues' Gunnarsson Exits With Injury

News: Carl Gunnarsson was removed from Saturday's game against the Wild after suffering an upper-body injury, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson skated just 12 shifts before sustaining the injury and retreating to the locker room. Coach Ken Hitchcock declined to provide an update on Gunnarsson after the match, so the blueliner should be viewed as questionable to play Sunday afternoon against the Red Wings.

Blues' Gunnarsson Picks Up Assist In Win

News: Carl Gunnarsson picked up an assist Friday in a 5-1 win over the Bruins. He was plus-1 and blocked two shots in the contest.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson has just 11 points on the season, but he is plus-13 and logging more than 17 minutes per game. He lack of offense makes him a less useful asset in shallow leagues, but in deep leagues his plus/minus rating is helpful.

Blues' Gunnarsson Nets Goal

News: Carl Gunnarsson netted a rare goal in Monday's victory over the Avalanche.
Analysis: It's just the second tally in 29 games on the season for the rearguard, who does his best work in front of the Blues' netminders. On a team with as much offensive firepower as the Blues, Carl Gunnarsson simply isn't relied upon to be much of a puck mover, limiting his fantasy upside to an extent.

Blues Activate Gunnarsson (Concussion)

News: Carl Gunnarsson (concussion) was activated from injured reserve and will play Friday against the Ducks, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson has been out since Dec. 6 with the concussion, resulting in his second lengthy absence of the season after offseason hip surgery delayed his debut. The Blues plan to plug him in on the second pairing with Kevin Shattenkirk, where he'll function primary as a stay-at-home type.

Gunnarsson (Concussion) Practices

News: Carl Gunnarsson (concussion) practiced in full Thursday, Lou Korac of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson's presence in practice lends more credence to the belief that he'll return to the ice Friday in Anaheim. Barring a setback, the defenseman should be expected to take the ice.

Blues' Gunnarsson Expected Back Friday

News: Carl Gunnarsson (concussion) is expected to return for Friday's game in Anaheim, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: While he hasn't played since early December, Carl Gunnarsson is now viewed as day-to-day. He's apparently unlikely to suit up for Tuesday's game against the Predators, leaving Friday as the expected return date.

Blues' Gunnarsson (Concussion) Skates Saturday

News: Carl Gunnarsson (concussion) skated with the team at Saturday's morning session.
Analysis: While Carl Gunnarsson won't suit up for Saturday's game with the Stars, coach Ken Hitchcock noted that the blueliner is now being viewed as day-to-day. Since he's been sidelined since Dec. 6, he may need another full practice or two to get his conditioning up to par, but a return to the lineup at some point next week would seem realistic.

Blues' Gunnarsson (Concussion) Not Yet Ready

News: Carl Gunnarsson (concussion) is not ready to rejoin the team for Thursday's game against the Kings, Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson is recovering from a concussion, and although he has started skating with the team, he'll need a little more practice time before getting activated.

Blues' Gunnarsson Skates With Team Tuesday

News: Carl Gunnarsson (concussion) skated with the team Tuesday morning, Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson is set to miss his fourth straight game with the concussion, but his participation with the team signals he might not be far off a return. Coach Ken Hitchcock indicated that Gunnarsson has been cleared for full contact, but still needs to get in some conditioning work before he'll be activated from IR.

Blues' Gunnarsson Gets In Some Work

News: Carl Gunnarsson (concussion) was on the ice for a workout Friday, NHL.com's Lou Korac reports.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson was able to skate, handle the puck and take part in endurance drills in what was believed to be his first on-ice work since being diagnosed with a concussion. He's still awaiting clearance for contact, but his activity Friday would seem to represent an encouraging development.

Blues Transfer Gunnarsson To IR

News: Carl Gunnarsson (concussion) was placed on injured reserve Thursday.
Analysis: Coach Ken Hitchcock had noted over the last couple of days that Carl Gunnarsson was making no notable progress with his recovery from the concussion, which made it likely that the Blues would be without the defenseman's services for multiple games. With that in mind, Gunnarsson was transferred to IR to open up a 23-man roster spot, which will be filled by the now-healthy Jay Bouwmeester (groin). There's no timetable yet for Gunnarsson's return.

Blues' Gunnarsson To Sit Out Thursday

News: Carl Gunnarsson (concussion) will sit out Thursday's game against the Islanders, Lou Korac of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson hasn't shown an improvement with his condition since taking an elbow to the head from the Islanders' Anders Lee over the weekend. He'll miss his second straight contest.

Leafs' Gunnarsson Out For Monday

News: Carl Gunnarsson (face) will not play Monday against the Panthers, Lou Korac of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson is still feeling the effects of being elbowed by the Islanders' Anders Lee over the weekend, and looks like he's in danger of missing even more time. The blueliner recorded a goal and four assists in 20 games before the injury.

Blues' Gunnarsson Doubtful For Monday

News: Carl Gunnarsson (upper body) is listed as doubtful for Monday's game against the Panthers, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson took an elbow to the face Saturday from the Islanders' Anders Lee and was forced to exit the contest. It's not clear if Lee will receive a suspension on what appeared to be a dirty hit, nor if Gunnarsson is dealing with a concussion as a result of the hit. The Blues should have a better idea of his health as the week progresses.

Blues' Gunnarsson Exits With Upper Body Injury

News: Carl Gunnarsson (upper body) will not return to Saturday's contest, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson failed to record a point in just under nine minutes of action prior to exiting. Look for Chris Butler to be one candidate to replace Gunnarsson's position on the second defensive pairing, with Petteri Lindbohm or Ian Cole also poised to see additional work.

Gunnarsson Scores First Goal With Blues

News: Carl Gunnarsson scored his first goal as a member of the Blues, adding an assist and a plus-3 rating, in Thursday's win over the Predators.
Analysis: A heck of a game for Carl Gunnarsson, who had gone six straight games without a point. He's not known for his offense, never having kicked in more than 20 points in a season, so this is unlikely to be the start of a big bust-out.

Blues Gunnarsson Picks Up First Point

News: Carl Gunnarsson had an assist Thursday in a win over the Ducks. He was plus-1 and took one shot in just 10:43 of ice time.
Analysis: This was Carl Gunnarsson's second game of the season and first point since joining the Blues in an offseason trade from Toronto. His ice time should ramp up going forward as his legs get stronger.

Blues' Gunnarsson Will Play Tuesday

News: Carl Gunnarsson (hip) will play Tuesday against the Stars, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson has been sidelined for the entire season so far after undergoing offseason hip surgey, but will finally make his debut in a Blues sweater Tuesday. The blueliner recorded three goals and 14 assists in 80 games with the Maple Leafs last season.

Blues' Gunnarsson: (Hip) Still Not Ready To Go

News: Carl Gunnarsson (hip) still doesn't sound like he's ready to make his season debut, NHL.com's Lou Korac reports.
Analysis: The Blues' medical staff has granted Carl Gunnarsson clearance to play and is simply waiting for the defenseman to alert them when he's good to go, but he's evidently not comfortable with his hip just yet. Jordan Leopold will continue to occupy a regular spot on defense for the Blues until Gunnarsson feels the pain in his hip has fully dissipated.
