Leafs Trade Gunnarsson To Blues

News: Carl Gunnarsson (hip) has been traded to the Blues for Roman Polak, according to Lance Hornsby of the Toronto Sun. The 94th overall draft pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft was sent to the Blues in the same package.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson will slot into the Blues' bottom pairing and will probably excel there -- he was over-played this past season in the top pairing with Dion Phaneuf in Toronto.

Leafs' Gunnarsson: Hip Surgery Successful

News: Carl Gunnarsson had successful hip surgery and will be ready for training camp, reports NBC Sports.
Analysis: Gunnar labored through the lock-out shortened season with a hip flexor injury and then tried to used electroacupuncture as an alternate to surgery. It didn't work and surgery became necessary.

Leafs' Gunnarsson Out Saturday

News: Carl Gunnarsson (undisclosed) will not play in Saturday's game against Ottawa, Jonas Siegel of TSN 1050 reports.
Analysis: The Leafs recalled defenseman Petter Granberg on an emergency basis, indicating that one of the team's blueliners is dealing with an injury, and it's apparently Carl Gunnarsson, who finishes the year with 17 points (three goals) in 80 games. The nature of his ailment is unclear.

Leafs' Gunnarsson: Four Points In Last Seven Games

News: Carl Gunnarsson scored his third goal of the season in Tuesday's loss to the Blues. He has four points in his last seven games.
Analysis: Two of those points were goals. The four in seven is quite remarkable given he has just 17 in 73 games this season. He is overmatched as a top-pairing defender, but might see some increased production if he was rolled as a number four guy.

Leafs' Gunnarsson Notches Game-Tying Goal

News: Carl Gunnarsson tallied the game-tying goal in an eventual 3-2 win over the Kings on Thursday.
Analysis: It was just Carl Gunnarsson's second goal in 67 games on the season. He provides fantasy owners with most of his value on the defensive end, where he's compiled 142 hits and 156 blocks.

Leafs' Gunnarsson Heating Up

News: Carl Gunnarsson has one goal and 10 assists in 59 games to date.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson is pretty valuable as far as stay-at-home defensemen go since he also has 30 PIM and a plus-14 rating on the season. He's actually been rather hot lately too, recording five points in the 10 games leading up to the Olympic break.

Toronto's Gunnarsson: Two Helpers In Last Three

News: Carl Gunnarsson picked up an assist Tuesday against the Bruins. It's his second assist in the last three games.
Analysis: Is he officially hot? Not a chance -- not with his track record. But it's a nice start to recovering his game. We'll watch this with interest.

Leafs' Gunnarsson Present At Warmups

News: Carl Gunnarsson (elbow) participated in warmups prior to Thursday's matchup with the Hurricanes, Jonas Siegel of TSN 1050 reports.
Analysis: It looks like Carl Gunnarsson will be able to play Thursday, although nothing is confirmed. The preliminary indications are that Jake Gardiner will sit while Gunnarsson will be paired with Cody Franson.

Leafs' Gunnarsson: Game-Time Decision Thursday

News: Carl Gunnarsson (elbow) will be a game-time decision for Thursday's contest against the Hurricanes, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: Coach Randy Carlyle has probably already made a decision regarding Carl Gunnarsson's status for the game, but he's not tipping his hand yet. The Maple Leafs used Tim Gleason on the top pairing with Dion Phaneuf on Tuesday and would likely do the same Thursday if Gunnarsson is unable to go.

Leafs' Gunnarsson Practices

News: Carl Gunnarsson (elbow) practiced with the team Wednesday, David Alter of Sportsnet 590 reports.
Analysis: Alter also mentioned that Carl Gunnarsson is not quite 100 percent yet, so his presence at practice is not a guarantee that he'll play in Thursday's game against the Hurricanes. That said, he seems like a pretty safe bet at this point, although the blueliner only has four points in 43 games so far, so he's only relevant in the deepest of fantasy leagues.

Leafs' Gunnarsson Out Tuesday

News: Carl Gunnarsson (elbow) will not play Tuesday vs. the Islanders, TSN reports.
Analysis: After hyper-extending his left elbow during Saturday's game, it looks like Carl Gunnarsson could miss multiple contests for the Leafs. Should the injury linger past the weekend, look for the team to move Gunnarsson to injured reserve and call up an extra skater.

Leafs' Gunnarsson Stil Day-To-Day

News: After undergoing an MRI on Monday, Carl Gunnarsson (elbow) remains day-to-day, Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun reports.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson's continued day-to-day status indicates that he avoided a serious injury. He was reportedly able to do some off-ice work Sunday morning, after injuring his elbow during Saturday's game.

Leafs' Gunnarsson To Undergo MRI

News: Carl Gunnarsson (elbow) will undergo an MRI on Monday, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson was able to get some off-ice work in Sunday morning, less than 24 hours after suffering the upper-body injury, but the team will send him for an MRI to get a better idea of the true severity of the issue. He's currently listed as day-to-day by the Leafs.

Leafs' Gunnarsson Day-to-Day With Injury

News: Carl Gunnarsson (upper body) is listed as day-to-day, David Alter of Sportsnet 590 The FAN reports.
Analysis: An upper-body injury forced Carl Gunnarsson from Saturday's game, but he was able to get some off-ice work in Sunday morning. He's already said to be improving, but Gunnarsson's status for Tuesday's game against the Islanders is up in the air.

Maple Leafs' Gunnarsson Exits With Injury

News: Carl Gunnarsson will not return to Saturday's game, after suffering an upper-body injury in the first period, Sportsnet.com reports.
Analysis: With Carl Gunnarsson ruled out for the rest of the game, Jake Gardiner will skate alongside Dion Phaneuf on Toronto's top defensive pairing. Gunnarsson was forced out of the contest, after taking a hard hit from the Rangers' Carl Hagelin.

Leafs' Gunnarsson Disappointing So Far

News: Carl Gunnarsson has just four points in 41 games this season, but has brought frustrated fantasy owners solid totals in hits (90) and blocked shots (94).
Analysis: He's on pace for the worst output of his short career. We wish he threw his weight around a bit more so he could also accumulate PIM, too. But he doesn't. He's just doesn't bring much value to most formats.

Leafs' Gunnarsson Playing Stay-At-Home Role

News: Carl Gunnarsson is playing alongside Dion Phaneuf again this season and brings stability to the Leafs' top pairing. He has four shots, hits and penalty minutes in the first four games of the season.
Analysis: His fantasy value is sorely limited in his current role, but a great value on the ice. He's there to cover for Phaneuf and that means he'll be focused on skating backwards instead of eyes up for chances.

Leafs' Gunnarsson Signs Three-Year Extension

News: Carl Gunnarsson signed a three-year extension with the Maple Leafs on Monday.
Analysis: The Leafs clearly liked what they saw this past season from Carl Gunnarsson, as they went ahead and re-upped the 26-year-old for three years Monday. Gunarsson put up 15 points (1G, 14A) last season, just four fewer than he totaled in 39 more games in 2012. He's not a big, intimidating enforcer along the blue line, but he has the puck-handling skills to be effective at the NHL level.

Leafs Get Gunnarsson Back

News: Carl Gunnarsson (lower body) suited up for Saturday's game against the Senators.
Analysis: In his first game since April 13, Carl Gunnarsson recorded three hits and three blocked shots in 18:01 worth of ice time for the Leafs.

Leafs' Gunnarsson Targets Saturday Return

News: Carl Gunnarsson (lower body) practiced Friday and is targeting a return to the ice for Saturday's game against the Senators, according to TSN Radio 1050.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson still will need to have a healthy skate around on Saturday morning in order to be active Saturday night against the Senators. Check in before game time before activating him.

Leafs' Gunnarsson Out Thursday

News: Carl Gunnarsson (lower body) won't play Thursday against the Islanders, Jonas Siegel of TSN 1050 reports.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson will miss his third consecutive game with his lower-body injury Thursday. Gunnarsson is targeting Saturday for his return to the lineup, but that will depend on his ability to practice in the team's morning skate Friday and Saturday.

Leafs' Gunnarsson Out Tuesday

News: Carl Gunnarsson (lower body) won't play Tuesday against the Caps, Mark Masters of TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson -- who has 14 points in 33 games to date -- will miss his second straight game Tuesday as a result of his thus-far-unspecified lower-body injury.

Leafs' Gunnarsson (Lower Body) Out Monday

News: Gunarsson is not playing Monday and is considered day-to-day with a lower-body injury, James Mirtle of the Globe & Mail reports.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson missed a stretch of time in February with groin/hip ailment, but it's uncertain whether his current injury is related. Consider him day-to-day until the Maple Leafs elaborate.

Leafs' Gunnarsson: Two Helpers

News: Carl Gunnarsson had two assists in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Lightning.
Analysis: He has contributed 11 points this season despite a nagging hip injury that probably needs offseason surgery. He can help you in deep formats, but his value is limited because of his lack of shots, minimal PIMs and zero power-play production.

Leafs' Gunnarsson (Groin) Returning Monday

News: Carl Gunnarsson (groin) will play Monday against the Panthers, Mark Masters of TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: Carl Gunnarsson was not expected to be ready to go Monday, but he will return to take on Florida. John-Michael Liles will watch from the press box as a healthy scratch.
