Sabres Demote Hackett

News: Matt Hackett was assigned to AHL Rochester on Monday.
Analysis: It's been a tough year for Matt Hackett, who spent most of the year trying to recover from a serious knee injury suffered the previous season. He was rather pedestrian in 14 games with the Amerks with a 2.72 GAA and .907 save percentage, but got the call-up after a slew of injuries to the Sabres' goalies. In five appearances, Hackett posted a 4.32 GAA and .884 save percentage. Because he failed to reach the number of appearances needed for the Sabres to retain his rights, Hackett will become an unrestricted free agent this season. With a strong finish the Sabres may elect to keep Hackett, but that scenario isn't likely to happen with high-end prospects Andrey Makarov and Linus Ullmark already signed for next season.

Sabres' Hackett Returns To Practice

News: Matt Hackett was spotted at the Sabres' practice Wednesday, John Vogl of The Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: After suffering from soreness and swelling in his surgically-repaired knee, Matt Hackett was back on the ice Wednesday morning, working in the net opposite Anders Lindback. Andrey Makarov, who was called up and started one game, was returned to Rochester on Tuesday, while Chad Johnson (lower body) is still on the mend. Lindback is expected to be the No. 1 goalie for the remainder of the season, but don't be surprised if the Sabres play Hackett for one more game. He's set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, but a return to Buffalo hasn't been ruled out.

Sabres' Hackett Still Not Skating

News: Matt Hackett still hasn't hit the ice since suffering some swelling in his knee and has missed the past four games.
Analysis: Matt Hackett will become an unrestricted free agent this summer because he hasn't reached the number of appearances needed for the Sabres to retain his rights. Hackett suffered an ACL injury in the previous season and has struggled since his return.

Sabres' Hackett To Reach Free Agency

News: Matt Hackett, who will not play in Friday's game due to a knee injury, will now become an unrestricted free agent this offseason because he can't reach the number of appearances needed for the Sabres to retain his rights, The Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: Matt Hackett needed five more appearances of at least 30 minutes in order to stay the property of the Sabres. The team had some high hopes for the injury-struck goaltender after acquiring him as part of the Jason Pominville-to-Minnesota deal in 2013, but he never did much at the big-league level and a torn ACL late last season really derailed any plans. He probably won't be too expensive so perhaps the Sabres will bring him back, but now all 30 teams will have a crack at him if they're looking for organizational depth.

Sabres' Hackett Likely Out For Weekend

News: Matt Hackett (knee) didn't skate Friday morning and appears doubtful to be available for either of the Sabres' weekend contests, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports.
Analysis: Coach Ted Nolan said after the skate that Anders Lindback would start Friday's game against the Blackhawks, while AHL call-up Andrey Makarov could get a look Saturday on Long Island. That seemingly rules Matt Hackett out for both games, which is probably for the best while he continues to operate at less than 100 percent due to his knee soreness. Unless he's able to get back on the ice in the next few days to demonstrate he's healthier, it's possible we've seen the last of Hackett this season.

Status Of Sabres' Hackett Up In The Air

News: Coach Ted Nolan indicated Thursday that the Sabres are uncertain when Matt Hackett (knee) might return to action.
Analysis: Nolan suggested that Matt Hackett, who has been rested the last couple of days, could be ready to play as soon as Friday's game against the Blackhawks, but also acknowledged the possibility that the goalie's absence might last a bit longer. The Sabres will play a back-to-back set on Friday and Saturday, so it would certainly be ideal for the team to have Hackett available for one of those games in order to give No. 1 goalie Anders Lindback a breather.

Sabres' Hackett Unavailable Wednesday

News: Matt Hackett (knee) will not be available for Wednesday's game against the Maple Leafs, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports.
Analysis: Matt Hackett was absent from Wednesday's skate while he continues to experience swelling in his knee. The Sabres hope to have him back in goal before the season draws to a close, but he'll need to show improved condition over the next few days in order for that to materialize. Andrey Makarov will stick around with the Sabres as the understudy to starting goalie Anders Lindback until Hackett is able to return.

Sabres' Hackett Could Return Wednesday

News: Matt Hackett is dealing with some recurring soreness and swelling in his knee.
Analysis: Coach Ted Nolan hopes that Matt Hackett will be ready to play by Wednesday, when the Sabres play against the Maple Leafs. Meanwhile, Andrey Makarov was recalled by the team to back up Anders Lindback on Monday.

Sabres' Hackett Not At Monday Morning Skate

News: Matt Hackett (unspecified issue) was not spotted at Monday morning's skate.
Analysis: Andrey Makarov was recalled by the team, so it looks like he'll back up Anders Lindback on Monday against the Coyotes, with the reason for Matt Hackett's absence not yet clarified.

Sabres' Hackett Sees Relief Duty, Takes Loss

News: Matt Hackett stopped seven of 10 shots in relief of Anders Lindback in Saturday's loss to Colorado.
Analysis: A horrible showing from Matt Hackett, who has given up three or more goals in each of his five appearances this season. The 25-year-old was credited with the loss Saturday, bringing his record down to 0-4-1 on the season. Considering he has a .884 save percentage and 4.32 GAA and is the backup on a team at the bottom of the standings, Hackett holds little to no fantasy value right now.

Hackett's 38 Saves Not Enough Thursday

News: Matt Hackett stopped 38 shots, but took a 4-3 loss to the Coyotes on Thursday.
Analysis: Apparently he wasn't limited by his knee issue, as Matt Hackett turned in a strong outing, but was ultimately sunk by Sam Gagner's early-overtime power-play goal. It's anyone's guess how the remaining starts will be broken out between Hackett and Anders Lindback, but the Buffalo goalie situation remains one to avoid for fantasy purposes.

Sabres' Hackett Good To Go

News: Matt Hackett (knee) has been confirmed as Thursday's starter in goal against the Coyotes.
Analysis: With Anders Lindback losing against Dallas in the Sabres' previous game, Matt Hackett gets the nod in the biggest tank battle since the Battle of the Bulge. While it's true that Hackett is the slightly weaker of the two goalies, he's coming off a 40-save effort against Nashville and pride is on the line between the league's two worst teams. Losing may be in the Sabres' best interests long term, but neither team will be throwing the game. Hackett could be a good play for a win for poolies, but it probably won't be pretty.

Sabres' Hackett Set To Start Thursday

News: Matt Hackett (knee) is on track to start Thursday's game against the Coyotes.
Analysis: Though Matt Hackett reported some knee soreness after Wednesday's practice, he looks like a go Thursday for the Sabres, who are 1-8-2 over their past 11 games. He'll take aim Thursday at an Arizona squad that snapped an eight-game slide with Tuesday's 5-4 overtime win over Detroit.

Sabres' Hackett Nursing Some Knee Soreness

News: Matt Hackett reported some knee soreness after Wednesday's practice, but is still expected to start Thursday's game against the Coyotes, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports.
Analysis: Matt Hackett nor the Sabres' training staff seems especially concerned about the minor knee issue, but coach Ted Nolan said he'd wait until Thursday morning before making a call on the goalie's availability for the game. Though he was handed a loss over the weekend to the Predators, Hackett turned in his best outing of the season, stopping an impressive 40 of 43 shots in the shutout defeat.

Sabres To Start Hackett On Thursday

News: Coach Ted Nolan said the Sabres are planning to start Matt Hackett for Thursday's game against the Coyotes.
Analysis: Thursday might represent one of the few legitimate opportunities for a Buffalo goalie to pick up a win the rest of the way, as the rudderless Coyotes seemingly don't have designs of playing competitively any longer. While Matt Hackett might make for a decent spot start for fantasy owners scrambling for any wins they can get, the ratios aren't likely to be very pretty. Over his three outings this season, Hackett has posted a 4.34 GAA and .893 save percentage.

Sabres' Hackett Makes 40 Saves In Loss

News: Matt Hackett made 40 save on 43 shots in Saturday's loss to the Predators.
Analysis: While Matt Hackett played well Saturday, the Sabres couldn't solve Pekka Rinne, resulting in a third straight defeat for the 25-year-old. With Anders Lindback appearing to be the go-to-guy in Buffalo, Hackett doesn't hold much fantasy value right now, especially when you consider his lackluster .893 save percentage and 4.34 GAA.

Sabres' Hackett Will Start Saturday

News: Matt Hackett will start in net against the Predators.
Analysis: Matt Hackett is still in search of his first win on the season. He'll take the ice for just his third time in 2015 with a lackluster save percentage of .867 and an equally poor 5.22 GAA.

Sabres' Hackett Likely To Play Saturday

News: Coach Ted Nolan said after Friday's loss to the Devils that Matt Hackett would "probably" start Saturday against the Predators.
Analysis: The Sabres stuck with Anders Lindback for both ends of a back-to-back set earlier in the week, but coach Ted Nolan was reluctant to do the same again for the weekend after Lindback only stopped 24 of 27 shots in Friday's defeat. Matt Hackett has made only two previous appearances with the Sabres this season, surrendering eight goals on 60 shots (.867 save percentage) while taking the loss on both occasions. He'll be a heavy underdog on the road Saturday against one of the best teams in the Western Conference, especially if they counter in net with No. 1 netminder Pekka Rinne.

Sabres Turn To Lindback Over Hackett On Tuesday

News: Matt Hackett is slated to back up Anders Lindback on Tuesday against the Bruins.
Analysis: Matt Hackett had been under consideration to start the game, but the team will stick with Lindback, who backstopped the Sabres in Monday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Caps.

Sabres Expected To Turn To Hackett On Tuesday

News: Matt Hackett is expected to start Tuesday's game against the Bruins, Paul Hamilton of WGR 550 Sportsradio reports.
Analysis: With Anders Lindback drawing Monday's start against the Caps, look for Matt Hackett to get the nod Tuesday, though with the Sabres on a six-game skid, Hackett isn't a high-percentage play against the Bruins on the road.

Sabres May Start Hackett Wednesday

News: Matt Hackett was pulled Saturday against the Capitals but coach Ted Nolan may give him another chance Wednesday against Toronto, reports the Olean Times Herald.
Analysis: "You get bucked off the horse, the first thing you want to do is get back on," said Nolan. Matt Hackett allowed four goals in 34 minutes Saturday against Washington before giving way to Anders Lindback. Hackett must make six more appearances with the Sabres this season in order for the team to retain his rights, and general manager Tim Murray dislikes letting assets walk. If Hackett plays well, the Sabres will keep him around to bolster their depth in goal. He's in line to see more action down the stretch, though Lindback is sporting a .915 save percentage with the Sabres and Nolan indicated he would ride the hot hand for as long as needed. Neither Lindback nor Hackett are good fantasy options, however, as both goalies are struggling to stick in the NHL.

Sabres' Hackett Pulled In Second Period

News: Matt Hackett was pulled in the second period of Saturday's game against the Capitals after allowing four goals on 23 shots.
Analysis: It's almost impossible for a Sabres goalie to be successful -- the team is awful. Don't bet the farm on this guy. He might be able to carve out a solid NHL future, but not this season or next.

Sabres' Hackett To Start Saturday

News: Matt Hackett will be between the pipes for Saturday's game against the Capitals, John Vogl of the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: Matt Hackett, who was recalled earlier in the day, will make his second start of the season. He previously surrendered four goals on 37 shots in a Jan. 30 loss to the Canucks, an outing that should provide little confidence about his future prospects. The expected long-term absence of Chad Johnson (lower body) should allow Hackett and nominal No. 1 goalie Anders Lindback to jockey for starting duties over the next several weeks, but the victor in that job battle isn't expected to provide much value in the fantasy realm, considering the Sabres' position in the Eastern Conference standings.

Sabres' Hackett Recalled From Rochester

News: Matt Hackett was recalled from AHL Rochester on Saturday, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports reports.
Analysis: Matt Hackett got the call up after Andrey Makarov was assigned to Rochester. With Chad Johnson (lower body) set to miss extensive time, Hackett was deemed to preferable option to keep around as a No. 2 goalie due to his greater professional experience than the 21-year-old Andrey Makarov. Considering that incumbent starter Anders Lindback has already gone unclaimed off waivers when he was with the Stars earlier in the season, he's hardly solidified his spot atop the depth chart. Both Lindback and Hackett could share a relatively even workload for as long as Johnson is out, but neither will make for an enticing fantasy option on a Sabres squad that's on track to finish with the league's worst record.

Sabres' Hackett Sent To AHL Rochester

News: Matt Hackett was assigned to AHL Rochester on Wednesday.
Analysis: Matt Hackett received just one start since being recalled Jan. 26, and allowed four goals on 37 shots in the outing. His return to the AHL likely indicates the anticipated return of Michael Neuvirth, who's been sidelined recently with a lower-body injury.
