Sabres Place Hackett On IR

News: Matt Hackett (knee) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports.
Analysis: With Matt Hackett not expected to be fully recovered from his torn ACL until around Christmastime, it was an easy decision for the Sabres to place him on IR. Once healthy, Hackett figures to be bound for AHL Rochester.

Sabres' Hackett Could Skate Soon

News: Matt Hackett suffered an ACL injury on April 12 and could start skating soon, reports The Buffalo News.
Analysis: There is still no return date for Matt Hackett though he is expected to return midway through the season, perhaps in late December or early January. Hackett is coming off a tough season, losing the starting job in the AHL to Nathan Lieuwen. He is in a contract year and faces an uphill climb on a team deep with goaltending prospects. The 24-year-old goalie may not figure into the team's long-term plans. Jhonas Enroth and Michal Neuvirth are battling for the NHL job while Andrey Makarov and Lieuwen will handle the duties in the AHL.

Sabres' Hackett Sidelined Until Christmas

News: Matt Hackett suffered a season-ending ACL in the second-last game of the regular season and will not be returning until Christmas, reports The Buffalo News.
Analysis: It's been less than two months since Matt Hackett's surgery to repair a torn ACL, so the Christmas return date is only a rough estimate for now. When Hackett is healthy enough to return, he will have to go undergo rehab before he can return to game action. With Nathan Lieuwen and Andrey Makarov already vying for the starting job, there's no hurry for Hackett to return, but if he can't play, he can't convince the Sabres to keep him around long-term. The Sabres qualified Hackett in June, which means the organization is willing to be patient and give him a fair shake. The 24-year-old has 162 AHL appearances under his belt but has managed only to appear in 21 NHL games.

Sabres' Hackett Out Long Term

News: Matt Hackett (knee) will be sidelined until December or January, Bill Hoppe of the Times Herald reports.
Analysis: Matt Hackett was expected to compete for the backup goalie job last season, but now sits behind both Jhonas Enroth and Michal Neuvirth on the Sabres depth chart. Considering that he'll miss the first half of the season, look for Hackett to spend most of his time with AHL Rochester in 2014-15.

Hackett Accepts Sabres' Offer

News: Matt Hackett (knee) re-signed with the Sabres on a one-year deal Saturday, reports 1290 CJBK.
Analysis: Matt Hackett accepted the Sabres' qualifying offer on a one-year, two-way deal worth $750,750 in the NHL. He's coming off a disappointing season during which he relinquished the starting job for AHL Rochester to rookie Nathan Lieuwen. Acquired in a trade from Minnesota for Jason Pominville last year, Hackett was expected to push Jhonas Enroth for the backup job to Ryan Miller, but struggled all season. This is a "show me" contract from general manager Tim Murray, who recently signed top Swedish goalie prospect Linus Ullmark and drafted another Swedish goalie, Jonas Johansson, in the 2014 NHL Draft.

Sabres Qualify Goaltender Hackett

News: Matt Hackett was given a qualifying offer by the Sabres on Monday, reports John Vogl of The Buffalo News.
Analysis: Despite a poor season in the AHL where he made a career-low 33 appearances and relinquished the starting job to Nathan Lieuwen, Matt Hackett will remain a Sabre after receiving a qualifying offer. The hot-headed goalie was unable to keep his cool at certain points during the season, but general manager Tim Murray saw enough to retain him. Though Michal Neuvirth and Jhonas Enroth appear to be the team's NHL starters, with a good summer and training camp Hackett could vault himself back into the conversation. If not, the 25-year-old will most likely enter the season as Rochester's starter for the 2014-15 season.

Sabres' Hackett Undergoes Knee Surgery

News: Matt Hackett underwent right knee surgery Wednesday, John Vogl of the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: Injuries to Jhonas Enroth and Michael Neuvirth pressed Matt Hackett into action with the Sabres at the tail end of the season, but it wasn't long before he became the latest addition to the injury list. He suffered the severe knee injury in Game 81 and may not be ready to play by the time the 2014-15 season starts. Once healthy, expect Hackett to report to AHL Rochester.

Sabres' Hackett Iffy For Start Of 2014-15

News: Matt Hackett suffered a knee injury in Saturday's loss to the Bruins and may not be ready for the start of next season, according to The Buffalo News.
Analysis: It was a pretty serious injury and Matt Hackett had to leave the ice on stretcher. Even if Hackett is fit to play when October rolls around, there's a decent chance Jhonas Enroth and Michal Neuvirth are ahead of him in the pecking order anyway.

Sabres' Hackett Leaves On Stretcher

News: Matt Hackett left Saturday's game against the Rangers on a stretcher with a leg injury, John Vogl of The Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: Matt Hackett was one of the few healthy goalies for the Sabres coming into the game. Now, Connor Knapp will be forced into his NHL debut mid-game. As serious as Hackett's injury appears, his season is likely over.

Sabres' Hackett: Leg Not Broken

News: Matt Hackett's leg is "not broken," according to John Vogl of the Buffalo News.
Analysis: We're not sure if that's good or bad because a ligament injury will likely take much longer to heal and rehabilitate. Matt Hackett was injured in Saturday's game when Boston's Torey Krug fell onto his extended leg; he lay in a heap on the ice and eventually had to be stretchered off the ice.

Sabres' Hackett May Have Serious Injury

News: Sabres coach Ted Nolan said after Saturday's game that Matt Hackett's leg injury does not look good. "It doesn't look good right now," Nolan said. We'll wrap him up as best we can, get him back home, have our doctors look at him."
Analysis: Matt Hackett can be ruled out for Sunday's season finale, as the bigger question is whether this is something that could affect his availability for the start of next season. Either way, he'll likely open next season in the AHL. Look for Connor Knapp to start Sunday's finale against the Islanders.

Sabres' Hackett Likely In Net Saturday

News: Matt Hackett will likely start between the pipes on Saturday.
Analysis: Matt Hackett was expected to start the remaining games on the Sabres schedule and it still looks that way. Buffalo may go after another goaltender for next season but as of now, Hackett is the top netminder on the team.

Hackett Solid In Sabres' Loss

News: Matt Hackett stopped 28 of 30 pucks he faced in a 2-1 loss to the Rangers on Thursday.
Analysis: Unfortunately for Matt Hackett and the Sabres, the second goal he allowed was with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. Regardless, Hackett will reportedly start both of Buffalo's games and will try to put his best foot forward in what seems to be an audition for a role on next year's roster.

Sabres' Hackett Starting Next Three

News: Matt Hackett will start the remaining three games for the Sabres, Bill Hoppe of the Times Herald reports.
Analysis: Matt Hackett won his first start of the season with the Sabres, but has since dropped five straight. He'll get the start Thursday against the Rangers, and is expected to return to the AHL at the end of the Sabres season.

Sabres' Hackett Saves 33 In Loss

News: Matt Hackett stopped a solid 33 of 36 Tuesday against the Red Wings, but took the loss.
Analysis: That's five consecutive losses for Matt Hackett, but he'll likely keep getting the goaltending assignments as the Sabres play out the string in the season's final week. After all, there's no one left standing to take them from him. He had a little scare when a shot went off his head, but Hackett is not expected to miss any time.

Sabres' Hackett To Start Tuesday

News: Matt Hackett will get the start for the Sabres on Tuesday against the Red Wings, the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: With Nathan Lieuwen concussed, look for the Sabres to call up another goalie to back Matt Hackett up Tuesday. Hackett figures to handle the remaining four starts of the season for the Sabres.

Hackett, Sabres Fall Friday

News: Matt Hackett allowed three goals on 31 shots in Friday's loss to Detroit, his third-consecutive loss.
Analysis: Matt Hackett played admirably to keep the Sabres in the game, but Buffalo has been overmatched of late and its goaltenders are hardly the safest bets on the board. Hackett is seeing time due to injuries in the Buffalo system and could get a few more starts as the season concludes.

Sabres Turn To Hackett On Friday

News: Coach Ted Nolan has tabbed Matt Hackett to start Friday's game in Detroit, according to The Buffalo News.
Analysis: Good luck to the youngster, as he has a team in front of him that can't score goals and is playing against a playoff team getting its best player back Friday in Pavel Datsyuk. This is essentially another audition for Matt Hackett as the Sabres try to figure out who they'll be using in goal next season.

Sabres Hackett: 29 Saves In OT Loss

News: Matt Hackett made 29 saves in Saturday's 4-3 OT loss to the Lightning.
Analysis: He's now 1-2-1 in four starts this month. He'll fight for the gig of backup next season, but may spend the whole season in the AHL again. His game is growing, but it still needs work.

Sabres' Hackett To Start Saturday

News: Coach Ted Nolan indicated Matt Hackett will be between the pipes for Saturday's contest.
Analysis: Matt Hackett had a rough outing on Thursday, giving up three goals on just 14 shots before being yanked in the first period. He will look to turn things around on Saturday against the Lightning.

Sabres' Hackett Yanked After One Period

News: Matt Hackett stopped just 11 of 14 shots in Thursday's loss to Nashville. He was pulled after one period.
Analysis: Matt Hackett had looked good in his first two NHL starts of the season, but this was certainly a step back against the unintimidating Nashville offense. Nathan Lieuwen wasn't particularly effective in relief, stopping 17 of 19 shots.

Sabres' Hackett To Receive Second Straight Nod

News: Matt Hackett will make a start in goal Thursday against the Predators, John Vogl of the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: Coach Ted Nolan said Matt Hackett earned a second straight start after hanging tight with the Canadiens on Tuesday, stopping 33 of 35 shots. With Michal Neuvirth and Jhonas Enroth still banged up and facing uncertain return dates, it wouldn't be surprising if Hackett drew the bulk of the starts in goal for the Sabres the rest of the way.

Sabres Lose Despite Hackett's 33 Saves

News: Matt Hackett stopped 33 of 35 shots Tuesday in Montreal, but the Sabres couldn't score a goal on Habs netminder Carey Price in a 2-0 loss.
Analysis: Despite the losing decision, Matt Hackett's looked great in his first two NHL games this year, posting a .967 save mark. Hackett hasn't been effective for AHL Rochester this year, but he's got a track record of far better play with Minnesota's AHL affiliate in past seasons, and he's certainly risen to the occasion so far. He could see more action yet, as Michal Neuvirth and Jhonas Enroth are both slated to miss further time.

Sabres' Hackett Earns Tuesday Nod

News: Matt Hackett will be in the net Tuesday vs. Montreal.
Analysis: Matt Hackett dominated the Oilers in his first NHL appearance of the season Thursday, stopping 35 of 36 shots to record the victory. The Canadiens represent a major step up in the competition, however, and Hackett's lack of a track record at the game's highest level certainly warrants concern about how he might perform in future contests.

Hackett Victorious In Buffalo Debut

News: Matt Hackett put a stop to 35 of 36 shots in Thursday's 3-1 win over Edmonton.
Analysis: Sharp stats for the 23-year-old goalie in this one, but with just an .898 save mark in AHL Rochester, Matt Hackett's lost most of the allure he once had as a prospect. Nonetheless, he could potentially see a couple more starts in the short term for Buffalo while Jhonas Enroth and Michal Neuvirth are banged up.
