Johnson To Serve As Sabres' Backup Next Season

News: The Sabres are looking for a No. 1 goaltender and expect Chad Johnson to serve as the primary backup next season, reports The Buffalo News.
Analysis: Chad Johnson was acquired from the Islanders late in the season but never suited up for the Sabres, injuring his ankle before he was able to make his scheduled start. The 29-year-old has been a backup his entire career and brings some experience into the crease, even though he appeared in just 19 games this past season. The Sabres aren't expected to be a playoff contender next season as they continue to develop their prospects, which means Johnson has little fantasy value and only worth owning for spot starts against weak teams.

Sabres' Johnson Ruled Out For Season

News: Chad Johnson (ankle) will not play in either of the Sabres' final two games of the regular season, Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports.
Analysis: Chad Johnson made a spirited effort to try and come back from a lower-body injury suffered in a March 6 practice, but his season will end without him having played a single game for the Sabres, who acquired him prior to the trade deadline. The 28-year-old will be under contract through the end of the 2015-16 campaign, so he could be in contention to see regular duty for Buffalo next season, though it will obviously hinge on what acquisitions the team makes during the offseason.

Sabres' Johnson Resumes Practice

News: Chad Johnson (ankle) returned to practice Thursday after missing the previous day's skate.
Analysis: The Sabres play Columbus on Friday and Pittsburgh on Saturday, and head coach Ted Nolan has yet to confirm who will tend the nets. Anders Lindback, who has started the majority of the games, will get at least one more start, which means Nolan will have to decide between Chad Johnson on Matt Hackett for the other game.

Sabres' Johnson Absent From Practice

News: Chad Johnson (ankle) didn't take part in Wednesday's morning skate, reports John Vogl of The Buffalo News.
Analysis: Chad Johnson has been sidelined with an ankle injury since March 6, which he suffered during a morning skate. The injury was believed to be relatively serious, and now with Matt Hackett returning from a sore knee, there's a chance the Sabres may opt to play it safe and shut Johnson down for the rest of the season. Johnson has one year remaining on his contract and barring any setbacks or changes should return to Buffalo next season and fight for the No. 1 job.

Sabres' Johnson Continues On-Ice Workouts

News: Chad Johnson, who hasn't played since March 6 with an ankle injury, continues to work out on the ice prior to practice.
Analysis: The Sabres will continue to roll with Anders Lindback and Andrey Makarov, and will start Lindback against Carolina on Monday. There's no hurry for Chad Johnson to return, who was acquired from the Islanders for Michal Neuvirth.

Sabres' Johnson Gets Back On Ice

News: Chad Johnson (lower body) was on the ice for a brief workout Friday.
Analysis: The Sabres initially feared Chad Johnson would be lost for the season after he suffered the lower-body injury during practice March 6, just four days after he was acquired from the Islanders. While the on-ice workout represented a positive step for the goalie, with only two weeks remaining in the season it's still up in the air if he'll be able to see competitive action in 2014-15. In a best-case scenario, Johnson probably shouldn't be expected to receive much more than one or two starts for the Sabres the rest of the way.

Sabres' Johnson Suffers Lower-Body Injury

News: Chad Johnson, who was previously scheduled to start Friday's game against Ottawa, is now doubtful because of a lower-body injury suffered during morning skate, John Vogl of the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: The Sabres are playing the first game of a back-to-back, and the team called up Andrey Makarov from AHL Rochester. Either Makarov or Anders Lindback figures to start Friday's game, with the other likely getting the start Saturday against Washington.

Sabres' Johnson (Lower Body) Out For A While

News: Coach Ted Nolan indicated Friday that Chad Johnson (lower body) will miss an extended period of time.
Analysis: Chad Johnson suffered the injury at morning skate Friday, and it appears to be a relatively serious one. In fact, coach Ted Nolan suggested he may be done for the season. The Sabres will likely turn mostly to Anders Lindback while Johnson is out, with a mix of Andrey Makarov in net as well.

Sabres' Johnson Out Friday

News: Chad Johnson (lower body) will not play in Friday's game against the Senators, Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun reports.
Analysis: Chad Johnson will sit out Friday night after suffering an injury during the Sabres' morning skate, and Anders Lindback will get the start in his place. It remains to be seen if Johnson will miss any additional action beyond Friday's contest.

Sabres To Start Johnson On Friday

News: Chad Johnson will start Friday's game against the Senators.
Analysis: After giving way to Anders Lindback in Tuesday's 3-0 loss to Tampa Bay, Chad Johnson is in line to make his first start for last-place Buffalo since being acquired from the Islanders on Monday.

Sabres Trade Neuvirth For Islanders' Johnson

News: The Sabres acquired Chad Johnson and a 2016 third-round draft pick from the Islanders on Monday in exchange for Michal Neuvirth, WGR550.com reports.
Analysis: The tank job is on full blast in Buffalo, and poolies shouldn't touch either Chad Johnson or Anders Lindback with a 50-foot pole. Johnson has played in 19 games this season and sports a 8-8-1 record with a .889 save percentage and 3.08 GAA on a very good Islanders team. Those numbers will almost assuredly get worse with the Sabres, but at least Johnson will get his chance to play. Going forward, a timeshare with Lindback is expected, since both goalies are considered below average.

Isles Tap Johnson For Saturday Start

News: Chad Johnson will be in the net for Saturday's game against the Hurricanes.
Analysis: After Jaroslav Halak received the nod a night earlier against Calgary, Chad Johnson will draw the cushier matchup of the back-to-back against the Hurricanes, who sport the second-worst record in the Eastern Conference. After struggling for much of the earlier portion of the season during his spot starts, Johnson has righted the ship in February. In his four turns this month, he's gone 2-1-1 with a 1.48 GAA and .953 save percentage.

Isles' Johnson Pelted With Pucks In Loss

News: Chad Johnson made 36 saves in Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Hurricanes.
Analysis: Two of the goals came on the power play. The Canes were all over the Isles in the game and Chad Johnson made some great saves. But he wasn't a miracle worker.

Isles' Johnson Stymies Coyotes

News: Chad Johnson turned away 27 of 28 pucks to claim a 5-1 victory over the Coyotes on Tuesday.
Analysis: After looking like one of the league's weaker backup options heading into February, Chad Johnson has restored some faith by turning out impressive efforts his last four times out. In those four starts, he's gone 2-1-1 with a 1.48 GAA and .953 save percentage. Considering the collection of talent surrounding him, Johnson is starting to look like a strong streaming option on most occasions he receives an opportunity to start.

Isles Turn To Johnson On Tuesday

News: Chad Johnson will start Tuesday's game against the Coyotes.
Analysis: While the Isles plan to roll with the same group of skaters as they rolled out in Sunday's 4-0 loss to the Canucks, Chad Johnson will replace Jaroslav Halak in net for the team. He's allowed five goals over three starts in the month of February.

Isles' Johnson Falls in Shootout

News: Chad Johnson allowed two goals on 27 shots before falling 3-2 in a shootout to Washington on Friday.
Analysis: A fine road effort from the Isles' backup, who was making his 17th appearance of the season to allow starter Jaroslav Halak to prepare for Sunday's tilt against Vancouver. However, with an ugly .885 save percentage and 3.08 GAA in 17 appearances this year, the only crease time he'll likely see the rest of the way is in back-to-back scenarios where Halak requires rest.

Islanders' Johnson Starting Saturday

News: Chad Johnson will start Saturday's game in Washington, Newsday's Arthur Staple reports.
Analysis: With the Islanders playing the first game of a back-to-back, Chad Johnson gets a second start in the last three games. Jaroslav Halak will likely be back between the pipes for Sunday's game against Vancouver.

Johnson Stops 37 As Isles Roll Over Carolina

News: Chad Johnson turned aside 37 of 38 shots Tuesday in a 4-1 victory over Carolina.
Analysis: A strong effort for Chad Johnson, who was making his first start in 10 days. It's been a rough year for the Isles' backup, as this win just pulled him to an even 7-7, and his GAA and save mark are still lingering in ugly territory.

Isles' Johnson Confirmed For Tuesday

News: Coach Jack Capuano confirmed that Chad Johnson would start Tuesday's game against the Hurricanes.
Analysis: Regular netminder Jaroslav Halak surrendered six goals Monday against the Rangers to see his winning streak end at six games, opening the door for Chad Johnson to pick up a rare turn. The Hurricanes rank near the bottom of the league in most offensive categories, but have been much more competitive of late and did find the net six times in a win over the Senators on Monday. Despite his favorable team context, Johnson is only 6-7-0 with a 3.33 GAA on the season, making him somewhat of a risky streaming choice.

Isles Could Go With Johnson On Tuesday

News: Chad Johnson is a candidate to start Tuesday's game against the Hurricanes, the Islanders' official site reports.
Analysis: With Jaroslav Halak having allowed six goals on 42 shots in Monday's loss to the Rangers, there's a decent chance that the Isles will turn to Chad Johnson on Tuesday for the first time since Feb.7, when the team fell to Boston, 2-1.

Isles' Johnson Solid In Loss To Bruins

News: Chad Johnson fell to the Bruins on Saturday, stopping 34 of 36 shots in the 2-1 loss.
Analysis: The 34 saves marked a season high for Chad Johnson, who made a number of impressive saves to keep the game tight throughout. Johnson hadn't delivered many quality outings in place of regular netminder Jaroslav Halak this season, so Saturday's showing should at least give the Islanders a little more confidence going forward in his viability as a backup.

Isles Johnson To Face Former Mates Saturday

News: Chad Johnson will be in the crease for Saturday's game against the Bruins.
Analysis: It's Chad Johnson's second start of the season against his former team, whom he defeated with a 30-save effort in a 3-2 win back on Oct. 23. That has gone down as one of Johnson's best performances of the season thus far, as he's otherwise been unreliable while seeing limited action behind Jaroslav Halak. Johnson has posted sub-.900 save percentages in seven consecutive stats, making him a shaky fantasy option Saturday.

Isles' Johnson Gags Rare Start

News: Chad Johnson was terrible Saturday, giving up four goals on just 19 shots in a 4-1 loss to the Red Wings.
Analysis: Making just his 12th start of the season after coach Jack Capuano opted to give regular starter Jaroslav Halak extra rest, Chad Johnson didn't do much to give his team a chance to win in this one. As long as Halak is healthy, he'll continue to get the lion's share of the starts on Long Island, further limiting Johnson's value. After Saturday's disappointing showing, Johnson now owns a paltry .865 save percentage and 3.43 GAA, numbers that scream "avoid at all costs!"

Isles' Johnson Gets Rare Starting Nod Saturday

News: Chad Johnson will man the net for the Islanders in Saturday's game against the Red Wings.
Analysis: Coach Jack Capuano has opted to give a breather to Jaroslav Halak for Saturday's matinee, opening the door for Chad Johnson to make his 12th start of the season. He's seen his usage trend downward as the Islanders have ascended to the top of the Metro Division, as it will be only his third appearance in January. With a poor 3.38 GAA and .870 save percentage on the season, Johnson won't be campaigning for additional duties, even if he happens to turn in a competent outing Saturday.

Isles' Johnson Wins Sixth Of Season

News: Chad Johnson turned away 16 of 18 shots in Saturday's 5-2 win over the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: The win brought Chad Johnson's overall record for the season over the .500 case, but that can mostly be attributed to the Isles' strong offense rather than the goalie's own doing. He was rarely tested in this one, and then watched as his mates besieged Sergei Bobrovsky for three goals in a seven-minute span in the second period to put the game out of reach. Johnson's horrid ratios (3.40 GAA, .869 save percentage) make him worth using only if you're gunning for a cheap win against a weaker opponent.
