Caps' Latta Gets Assist, 10 PIM In Season Finale

News: Michael Latta recorded an assist and spent 10 minutes in the penalty box in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Rangers.
Analysis: After spending a large portion of the first half as a healthy scratch for the Capitals, Michael Latta ended up seeing regular duty on the club's fourth line down the stretch. While the consistent role didn't result in much offensive output, and therefore, little fantasy utility, coach Barry Trotz appears comfortable with rolling Latta in his bottom-six ranks during the postseason.

Caps' Latta In Line To Play Thursday

News: Michael Latta (upper body) will return to the lineup Thursday against the Wild, Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington reports.
Analysis: The Capitals are only bringing 12 forwards with them on the trip to Minnesota and seemingly aren't planning to recall another from AHL Hershey, which confirms that Michael Latta will be fit to suit up Thursday. The fourth-liner has missed a little over two weeks with the injury, but checked out fine after practicing the last couple of days.

Caps' Latta (Upper Body) Practices Wednesday

News: Michael Latta (upper body) centered the Capitals' fourth line during Wednesday's practice, Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Michael Latta has been out of the lineup since leaving a Mar. 3 game against the Blue Jackets with an upper-body injury. Given that he's back at practice and the Capitals sent Chris Conner down to the minors recently, it looks like the 23-year-old is nearing a return to the lineup, and could play as early as Thursday in Minnesota. Still only getting fourth-line minutes, Latta is a reach even in deep fantasy leagues.

Caps' Latta (Upper Body) Out Monday

News: Michael Latta (upper body) was unable to take the ice for Monday's game against the Sabres.
Analysis: Michael Latta should still be considered day-to-day moving forward as he continues to deal with an upper-body injury. The 23-year-old's next opportunity to get on the ice will be against the Wild on Thursday.

Caps' Latta (Upper Body) Out Sunday

News: Michael Latta (upper body) is out for Sunday's game against the Bruins, CSN's Chuck Gormley reports.
Analysis: Michael Latta hasn't played since March 3, and his next shot to return will come Monday in Buffalo. Brooks Laich (upper body), on the other hand, is active for Sunday's game.

Caps' Latta Out Friday

News: Michael Latta (upper body) has been ruled out of Friday's game against the Stars, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: As expected, Michael Latta won't suit up for Friday's contest against Dallas. He'll hope to make a return to game action Sunday against the Bruins.

Caps' Latta Likely To Sit Out Another Friday

News: Michael Latta (upper body) said he doesn't expect to play Friday against the Stars, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Michael Latta was originally listed as questionable to suit up Friday, but with the Capitals bringing Andre Burakovsky aboard on an emergency recall, it's clear the 23-year-old isn't quite healthy yet. It now appears Latta will take aim at returning to action Sunday against the Bruins.

Caps' Latta Questionable For Friday

News: Coach Barry Trotz indicated Michael Latta (upper body) is questionable for Friday's game against Dallas, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Michael Latta hasn't played since taking a vicious hit from the Blue Jackets' Jared Boll along the boards back on Mar. 3. The 23-year-old went through a full practice on Tuesday, and with Jay Beagle (upper-body) nicked up, Latta should draw back into the lineup if he's fully healthy following Friday's morning skate.

Caps' Latta Takes Full Contact Tuesday

News: Michael Latta (upper body) took part in Tuesday's practice, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Michael Latta donned a full-contact jersey during the session, but coach Barry Trotz said the team made sure he only took limited contact. He's aiming to return to the lineup for either of the Capitals' two weekend contests, scheduled for Friday versus the Stars and Sunday versus the Bruins.

Caps' Latta (Upper-Body) Resumes Skating

News: Michael Latta (upper-body) skated on his own after the Caps' optional practice Saturday morning, Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington reports.
Analysis: Michael Latta left Tuesday's game against Columbus after absorbing a heavy hit from Blue Jackets winger Jared Boll and did not play in Thursday's loss to Minnesota as a result. Although he avoided any major structural damage, Latta is expected to be out of the lineup for Saturday's game, and the team is hopeful of his return some time next week, possibly as soon as Wednesday's tilt with the Rangers.

Caps' Latta Avoids Structural Damage

News: Michael Latta (upper body) is expected to return to action next week, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: The Capitals' medical staff has cleared Michael Latta of any structural damage, but it sounds like the injury will cost him at least a second straight game Saturday against the Sabres. The team will likely revisit his progress after the weekend to determine if he'll be fit to play next Wednesday against the Rangers.

Caps' Latta Out Thursday

News: Michael Latta (upper body) will not play Thursday against the Wild.
Analysis: The Capitals are still listing Michael Latta as day-to-day with the injury, but since he failed to participate in the team's morning skate, he'll be held out of the lineup Thursday. Brooks Laich will rejoin the lineup to replace Latta.

Caps' Latta Day-To-Day

News: Michael Latta (upper body) is considered day-to-day as Thursday's game against the Wild approaches, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: With Michael Latta day-to-day, the Caps recalled Andre Burakovsky on Thursday, following his brief demotion, in order to bolster the team's depth up front.

Caps' Latta Suffers Upper-Body Injury

News: Michael Latta suffered an upper-body injury in the second period of Tuesday's game against the Blue Jackets and will not return, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Michael Latta saw only six shifts on the night before exiting with the injury. The fourth-line center has no goals and five assists over his 42 games this season, so the injury should only impact those in the very deepest of leagues.

Caps' Latta Picks Up Rare Assist

News: Michael Latta picked up an assist and four hits in Wednesday's 5-4 overtime win over the Sharks.
Analysis: Michael Latta racks up a healthy amount of hits and PIMs, but he doesn't have much else to offer as a skater averaging less than 10 minutes on the ice each game.

Caps' Latta Fights, Assists Thursday

News: Michael Latta notched a pair of assists and picked up five for fighting during Thursday's overtime win in Columbus.
Analysis: Michael Latta's fantasy value can be summed up by the fact that Thursday's game doubled his point total for the year, but he does have a useful 24 PIM in 23 games.

Caps' Latta Impressing Coaching Staff

News: Michael Latta has impressed head coach Barry Trotz since his return to the lineup, The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Michael Latta's improvement in the faceoff circle has been significant for a Capitals team looking to roll four lines in pursuit of an attack style based on puck possession. While Latta's contributions as a hard-nosed, defensively reliable pivot anchoring the fourth line are important, he has yet to carve out any significant fantasy value outside of deep leagues that count hits and penalty minutes, as he has only two assists in 21 games this season.

Caps' Latta Gets In Full Practice

News: Michael Latta (upper body) ditched his non-contact jersey during Thursday's morning skate, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Michael Latta won't suit up for Thursday's exhibition against the Flyers, but does expect to play in Sunday's preseason finale against the Hurricanes. While Latta isn't necessarily guaranteed an Opening Night roster spot, his odds would seem strong, especially after coach Barry Trotz expressed some concern about the availability of fellow bottom-six forwards Jay Beagle and Tom Wilson for the start of the regular season.

Caps' Latta Nursing Upper-Body Injury

News: Michael Latta missed Saturday's practice with an upper-body injury, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Coach Barry Trotz described the injury as minor, so it shouldn't impact Michael Latta's chances of making the roster. Regardless, he looks to be in pole position to land a role among the Caps' bottom-six forwards.

Caps' Latta Making Case To Stay In DC

News: Michael Latta has impressed head coach Barry Trotz through the first two preseason contests and is making a strong case to remain with the team to start the regular season, Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Michael Latta is the last remaining fragment of the failed Martin Erat trade in 2013. He spent most of last season with AHL Hershey, tallying 14 goals and 34 points in 52 games. Given Tom Wilson's recovery from an offseason leg injury, Latta's imposing physical play and checking abilities make him a strong candidate for fourth-line minutes if Wilson is unable to start the season. With only four points in 17 NHL games, the hard-nosed Latta may be a solid role player for the Capitals this season, but does not possess significant fantasy value unless he can work his way up the lineup.

Caps Re-Sign Latta To Two-Year Deal

News: The Capitals have re-signed Michael Latta to a two-year, $1.15 million contract.
Analysis: Michael Latta was tendered a qualifying offer, allowing the Caps to match any offer sheets he may have received from other teams during free agency. Acquired as part of the largely failed Martin Erat trade, Latta will be reunited with the Predators coaching staff that drafted him originally, and will be given every chance to make the Caps during training camp.

Caps Tender Qualifying Offer To Latta

News: Michael Latta was tendered a qualifying offer by the Capitals on Sunday, Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Michael Latta, a pending Restricted Free Agent, had four points in limited action at the NHL level last season, spending most of the campaign with the AHL's Hershey Bears. Having been drafted by the Predators, it is possible that the arrival of former Predators bench-boss Barry Trotz as the Caps' new head coach may mean a larger role for Latta this coming season. Stay tuned as training camp unfolds.

Caps Recall Latta

News: Michael Latta was recalled from AHL Hershey on Thursday.
Analysis: With NHL teams now able to resume practicing, Michael Latta will rejoin the Capitals to fill out their forward lines while some of their players remain in Sochi. Latta has notched a goal and three assists over 17 games with the parent club this season.

Caps Re-Assign Latta to AHL Hershey

News: Michael Latta (lower body) was re-assigned to AHL Hershey on Saturday.
Analysis: The Capitals are just doing some cleanup on their roster as Michael Latta is already on long-term injured reserve and isn't expected back for some time. The move will simply free up a roster space to allow the team some depth.

Caps Place Latta On LTIR

News: Michael Latta (lower body) was placed on long-term injured reserve Wednesday.
Analysis: With Michael Latta not expected back anytime soon, the Capitals went ahead and moved him to long-term injured reserve. He has yet to resume on-ice activity and it's unclear when he might return.
