Caps Sign Stoa To One-Year Deal

News: The Caps have signed Ryan Stoa to a one-year deal, according to Capitals.com.
Analysis: Ryan Stoa was with the AHL last year, scoring 16 goals with 20 helpers in 75 games. He last played in the NHL with Colorado in 2010-11. He is just 25 years old and stands a sturdy 6-3, weighing 200 pounds.

Avs Send Stoa To Minors

News: Ryan Stoa has been sent to AHL Lake Erie, reports the Denver Post.
Analysis: Another disappointing preseason for Ryan Stoa, who was once thought to be one of the Avs' blue-chip prospects. This makes three consecutive years Stoa has failed to make the team out of training camp, which could very well put his future with the team in jeopardy. He will likely be one of the first guys called up if the Avs run into injury trouble down the road, but fantasy-wise, we wouldn't recommend putting any stock in him at this point in time.

Avs' Stoa Makes Quick Return Following Appendectomy

News: Stoa has just a single assist in four games since returning from a five-game absence following an appendectomy.
Analysis: He was originally expected to be out three weeks, so his quick return to the ice is encouraging. However, his lack of production (three points in 16 games) continues to be a huge disappointment. He's not someone who should be on your fantasy radar right now.

Avs' Stoa Out Due To Appendectomy

News: Stoa will be out for for three weeks due to undergoing an emergency appendectomy, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Given that he had two points in 12 games up to this point, this development puts a knife into whatever fantasy utility Stoa might have had this year.

Avs' Stoa Back With Big Club

News: Stoa, who was promoted from AHL Lake Erie on Friday, recorded three shots in 13:28 worth of ice time in Saturday's 4-0 loss to the Sharks.
Analysis: Stoa has managed to notch a couple of goals in his seven games with the big club thus far, but more consistent production is needed from him for his upside to translate into fantasy relevance.

Avs Send Stoa Back To Minors

News: Stoa has been reassigned to AHL Lake Erie, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Chances are the move was made to free up a roster spot for Ryan O'Reilly, who is set to return to the lineup following a shoulder injury suffered Jan. 14 at Minnesota. Stoa saw just 4:28 of ice time Saturday against Anaheim, and despite scoring two goals, was overall ineffective in the six games he played since being called up last month. Stoa still has a ton of upside, but is having a hard time putting it all together at the NHL level.

Avs' Stoa Starting To Heat Up

News: Stoa's game-opening tally against the Coyotes on Wednesday gave him a two-game goal streak heading into the All-Star break.
Analysis: Stoa was originally recalled from AHL Lake Erie last week to fill in for TJ Galiardi on the Avs' third line, but since Galiardi's recall, Stoa has been used more frequently on the second line alongside Paul Stastny and Brandon Yip. Stoa has always oozed plenty of power-forward potential, but for some reason has never been able to put it all together. That could all change if Stoa continues to make the most of the opportunity put before him. He's worth a pickup right now for those of you in deeper leagues.

Avs Promote Stoa From AHL

News: Stoa has been recalled from AHL Lake Erie and could be in the lineup Thursday against Nashville, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Stoa was brought up to replace TJ Galiardi, who was demoted to Lake Erie following Wednesday's practice. "All reports indicated that Ryan was playing very well, was worthy of a chance, so he was the guy [the Monsters staff] suggested come up," coach Joe Sacco said. "Ryan had some short stints with us before and it's another opportunity for a player to make his mark and establish himself." Stoa had 15 goals and 28 points in 44 games with Lake Erie prior to being called up. He will likely take Galiardi's spot on the Avs' third line for now, but keep an eye on him in case he gets moved into a scoring role.

Avs' Stoa Demoted to AHL

News: Stoa was assigned to AHL Lake Erie on Sunday, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: With Peter Mueller on the shelf with a concussion, Stoa was being considered for a second-line left wing spot but went scoreless in five preseason games. "I'm sure [Stoa]'s disappointed, and I would be too, because I think there was a real good opportunity presented to him," coach Joe Sacco said. "Most of the preseason games, he played on one of the top two lines and got power-play time. For our staff, we just didn't see enough from him. He just didn't jump out at me. He's a big body, he skates well, he's got some skill; (but) you've got to be more involved in the game physically. When you play physically, when you play hard, the skill will follow." This is the second season in a row where Stoa was expected to crack the Avs' roster and wound up back in Lake Erie. One has to wonder whether the team's patience with him is starting to wear thin.

Avs' Stoa Impresses During Preseason Game

News: Stoa played on the top line during Friday's 2-1 preseason loss to Dallas, reports the Denver Post.
Analysis: Stoa auditioned at left wing alongside Matt Duchene and Chris Stewart and delivered an excellent performance, dishing out six hits and firing five shots on goal. "He's one of the guys that I've been looking for to step it up," coach Joe Sacco said of Stoa, "and I thought tonight was probably one of the better games he's had so far." The Avs have been waiting for Stoa's arrival for a couple of seasons now, so they will give him every opportunity to contribute. If he continues delivering performances like this, you can probably pencil him in as a top-six forward to start the season. Monitor closely.

Avs' Stoa May Get Shot at Scoring Role

News: Stoa has an opportunity to play on either the second or third line this season, reports the Denver Post.
Analysis: Stoa was an early favorite to win a roster spot last season but turned out to be a huge disappointment for the Avs (three points in 12 games), and eventually wound up back in the AHL. This season, with Peter Mueller now out indefinitely with another concussion, Stoa may get the chance to fill in at Mueller's spot on the second line with Matt Duchene and Milan Hejduk, or on the third line with Brandon Yip and Ryan O'Reilly if David Jones winds up on the second unit. Either way, a move up would increase his fantasy value significantly. Monitor closely - the possibilities here are intriguing.

Stoa a scratch for Game 5

News: Avalanche C Ryan Stoa did not play in Game 5 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series against the Sharks on Thursday due to a lower-body injury. Stoa has missed the last two contests.
Analysis: Stoa only played in 12 games during his rookie run in 2009-10. He scored in his final two games of the season, but he hardly was a factor. The book is not closed on the former University of Minnesota athlete, but he will have little Fantasy appeal on Draft Day 2010. He is more of a low-end, long-term Fantasy keeper.

Stoa can't go on Tuesday

News: Colorado C Ryan Stoa did not suit up for Game 4 of the Western Conference quarterfinals against the Sharks on Tuesday due to a lower-body injury. Stoa was injured during Sunday's Game 3.

The book is not closed on the former University of Minnesota athlete, but he will have little Fantasy appeal on Draft Day 2010. He is more of a low-end, long-term Fantasy keeper.

Stoa injured filling in for Porter

News: Colorado forward Ryan Stoa was in the lineup for Game 3 of the Western Conference quarterfinals against the Sharks as he filled in for Kevin Porter, who suffered an upper-body injury in Game 2. Unfortunately, Stoa left in the second period with a lower-body injury. He had no points in 8:45 of ice time.

Stoa could be out for the season

News: The Denver Post reports that Avalanche rookie C Ryan Stoa could be out for the season with a left shoulder injury sustained in Friday's loss to Dallas.
Analysis: Stoa has been on the lower lines for just six Avs games in his rookie season. He has a solid 18 goals in 41 AHL games though, and the former second-round pick from 2005 remains a nice low-end keeper option in deeper leagues.

Stoa summoned from Lake Erie (AHL)

News: The Denver Post reports the Avalanche placed center Matt Hendricks on injured reserve Friday with an ankle injury. Ryan Stoa and Brett Skinner were recalled from Lake Erie of the AHL.
Analysis: Stoa is in his first year of pro hockey after completing a stint at the University of Minnesota. He has really developed his game over the last two years and already has 18 goaks and 27 points in 41 games with Lake Erie. He had no points in two games with Colorado. Stoa is more of a long-term Fantasy keeper at this stage in his career.

Avs call up Peltier, Stoa

News: The Avalanche has called up D Derek Peltier and C Ryan Stoa from the AHL.
Analysis: Peltier has nine points in 22 AHL games this season and played 11 times with Colorado in 2008-09. Stoa, 22, in his first pro season after finishing up a four-year career at the University of Minnesota. A second-round pick in 2005, Stoa has nine points in 25 AHL games this season. Stoa is a minimal prospect, but neither of these guys should be owned in seasonal formats while up with the Avs.
