Sabres Move Varone To Second Line

News: Varnoe was dropped to the second line from the first line at Monday's practice, reports Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News.
Analysis: Phil Varone collected two points Friday against Ottawa but was held off the score sheet Saturday against Washington. Johan Larsson had a stronger showing Saturday, which may have precipitated Varone's demotion, though it's tough to gauge which center will be the better performer each night. The Sabres are fostering some competition within the team as Varone and Larsson audition for regular roles next year. However, in the grand scheme of things it may not matter whether Varone or Larsson is the team's top center since the team has trouble scoring in general.

Sabres' Varone Collects Two Points In Loss

News: Phil Varone scored his third goal of the season and had an assist in Friday's loss to the Senators.
Analysis: The new Sabres' top-line center now has four points in 11 games on the season. He's posted strong assist totals in the AHL, so the 24-year-old should be able to put up decent point totals with Tyler Ennis and Matt Moulson on his wings in his second NHL season.

Sabres' Varone Making Most Of Opportunities

News: Phil Varone, the Sabres' new No. 1 center, wants to show the team what he can do, reports the Olean Times Herald.
Analysis: Phil Varone skated on the Sabres' top line in a 3-0 shutout loss against the Lightning and will remain as the team's No. 1 center for the foreseeable future. Varone was leading AHL Rochester in scoring when he was called up and centered a line with Matt Moulson and Tyler Ennis on the wings. The trio could provide some magic offensively with Varone and Ennis complimenting each other as skill players with Moulson serving as the shooter. The Sabres called up Mikhail Grigorenko on Thursday and will serve as the No. 2 center. Grigorenko and Varone will be tasked to carry the Sabres offense until the end of the season. Varone has two goals in 10 games this season.

Sabres Tab Varone For Top Line

News: Phil Varone skated on the Sabres' top line Tuesday against Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Phil Varone played 19:01, a season-high, although he didn't register a point in the 3-0 shutout loss. Varone was AHL Rochester's leading scorer when he was called up and after toiling in the minors for the past two years, his hard work has paid off. He registered two shots on net and will continue to serve as the team's No. 1 centerman with Zemgus Girgensons (fractured ankle) sidelined. The Sabres don't score much but if they do, Varone should be in line for some points. He has two goals in 10 NHL games this season.

Sabres Recall Varone

News: The Sabres recalled Phil Varone on Thursday, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Along with Phil Varone, fellow forward Zac Dalpe was recalled from AHL Rochester, in moves that were made with injuries to Zemgus Girgensons (foot) and Tyler Ennis (lower body) in mind. Varone, who has recorded two goals in seven NHL games this season, leads Rochester in scoring with 43 points in 52 games. For at least Thursday's game against the Canucks, Varone will form an all-Rochester line with Johan Larsson on the left wing and Dalpe on the right wing. The small and feisty Varone will be expected to pitch in with some scoring and physical play.

Sabres Send Varone To AHL

News: The Sabres have assigned Phil Varone to AHL Rochester.
Analysis: Phil Varone, who has recorded two goals in seven NHL games this season, returns to Rochester, where he is the team's co-scoring scoring leader (along with Mikhail Grigorenko) with 29 points in 36 games. The demotion shouldn't be all that surprising with Varone getting benched to start Saturday's game against Philadelphia. The diminutive center has a lot of skill but hasn't played up to head coach Ted Nolan's standards. It's entirely possible that Varone will get another audition later in the season if he continues to excel at the AHL level.

Sabres' Varone Benched Saturday Against Flyers

News: Phil Varone played just 50 seconds in the first period against Philadelphia on Saturday.
Analysis: Phil Varone and Cody Hodgson were in head coach Ted Nolan's doghouse Saturday, each playing just 50 seconds in the first frame. Varone had a two-goal game earlier this season but his play has fallen off the map a little and Nolan wanted to send a message to the team that only those playing to his level of standard will get the ice time. Varone has yet to find a permanent spot in the Sabres lineup and more subpar performances could mean a demotion back to the AHL. Nolan is notoriously tough on young players and if Varone doesn't get his ice time, he won't be able to produce offensively. His fantasy value is limited until he gets a regular role. His ice time has declined in his past four games.

Varone Returns To Sabres

News: The Sabres have recalled Phil Varone from AHL Rochester.
Analysis: Phil Varone, who leads Rochester with 29 points in 36 games, returns to the big club after a brief demotion following a three-game stint with Buffalo, in which he notched two goals (both scored last Thursday against Carolina) in three games. Varone was sent down to Rochester for one game during the Sabres' brief break and after a two-goal showing, earned another callup. With no timeline on Cody McCormick's (blood clot) return, Varone will likely the team's third-line center with some power play opportunities. He's an undersized but talented and feisty player that provides a low-risk, medium-upside return.

Sabres Return Varone To Minors

News: Phil Varone was reassigned to AHL Rochester on Saturday.
Analysis: Phil Varone turned in an impressive three-game stint with the Sabres, highlighted by a two-goal showing against the Hurricanes in a loss Thursday. His demotion signals that Torrey Mitchell (foot) could be ready to play in time for the Sabres' next game Tuesday, lessening the need for the team to keep Varone around. However, given how well he played during his first exposure to the NHL this season, expect him to get another call-up in the near future.

Sabres' Varone Pots First Two NHL Goals

News: Phil Varone represented the whole of the Buffalo offense Thursday, scoring the first two goals of his NHL career and going plus-1 in a 5-2 loss to Carolina.
Analysis: A nice improvement for Phil Varone over his season debut Tuesday, when he went minus-2 against the Devils. He showed promise in that game, though, putting five shots on goal to foreshadow Thursday's breakout. Varone, who owns 29 points in 35 games for AHL Rochester and was a 61-point man there last year, skated a solid 15:19 for the Sabres on Thursday.

Varone Recalled By Sabres

News: Phil Varone was recalled by the Sabres on Sunday.
Analysis: Phil Varone doesn't have any appearances for Buffalo this season and won't likely enjoy an extended stay at the NHL level during this current stint. He played in nine games for the Sabres last season and managed to register one goal and one assist during that time span.

Sabres Cut Varone

News: Phil Varone was one of 11 cuts made by the Sabres on Friday.
Analysis: Phil Varone was a long-shot to make the roster and will return to Rochester for the season, where he will be one of the team's go-to forwards. Varone is an aggressive player who can score on a consistent basis but is often held back by his size.

Sabres Assign Varone To AHL

News: The Sabres are assigning Phil Varone to the AHL during the Olympic break.
Analysis: Phil Varone had two assists in nine games for the Sabres. On some nights the diminutive Varone was the Sabres' best forward, a spark-plug playmaker who was leading the AHL Amerks in scoring at the time of his call-up. With the NHL taking a break for nearly a month, Varone will return to the AHL to resume playing. If he continues to perform well, he could re-join the Sabres after the break. With Zemgus Girgensons moving to center, the Sabres have been able to hide Varone's lack of size a little better on the wing.

Sabres' Varone Scores First NHL Goal

News: Phil Varone scored the first goal of his NHL career Tuesday in a 5-4 overtime loss to Washington.
Analysis: In his fourth NHL game, Phil Varone skated a career-high 15:03, launched a career-high four shots on goal, and won six of his seven faceoffs. Varone was in the midst of a fine season for AHL Rochester before getting the call, having notched 33 points in 38 games, and has some fantasy appeal in deep formats if this spike in ice time persists.

Sabres Recall Varone

News: Philip Varone was recalled from AHL Rochester on Wednesday, John Vogl of the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: It appears Philip Varone will only be on hand to provide forward depth while he's with the Sabres. The undersized yet very skilled center is having a nice bounce-back year after a disappointing sophomore season. Varone is an aggressive player, something head coach Ted Nolan will like, and capable of generating offense with his deft hands. It remains to be seen how Nolan will use him, but Rochester's top center should be placed in scoring situations so he can contribute.

Sabres Ink Varone

News: Philip Varone has signed an entry-level deal with the Sabres, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: He's picked up 43 points in 63 games during his first AHL campaign. Just 21, Philip Varone may not see time in Buffalo until the middle of next season, but he seems to be finding his scoring touch with Rochester after picking up 230 points (78 G, 152 A) in 228 games during his junior career.
