Coyotes Sign Vitale

News: The Coyotes signed Joe Vitale to a three-year, $3.35 million contract Tuesday, the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Joe Vitale spent the last four seasons in Pittsburgh, where he mostly played a depth forward role. He picked up a goal and 13 assists in 53 games with the Penguins, and shouldn't be expected to contribute much more than that with the Coyotes.

Pens' Vitale Practices

News: Joe Vitale (lower body) took part in Wednesday's practice, Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Joe Vitale left Monday's game against the Blue Jackets after a nasty knee-to-knee collision, but was able to practice with the team Wednesday. The center should be good to go when the team's Round 2 series starts against either the Flyers or the Rangers.

Pens' Vitale Leaves With Possible Knee Injury

News: Joe Vitale exited Monday's Game 6 after colliding knees with the Blue Jackets' Blake Comeau, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: It looked like Joe Vitale was attempting to put a lick on Comeau to make up for the Blue Jackets' earlier hit on Beau Bennett, but it was Vitale who ended up taking the brunt of the hit. Vitale's injury was a big hit to the Penguins' center depth after Brandon Sutter also departed early due to an ailment, but the team was ultimately able to stave off a furious Columbus rally. He'll now have a couple of days to heal up with the Penguins advancing to the second round of the postseason.

Pens' Vitale Expected To Play Wednesday

News: Joe Vitale (upper body) is expected to play Wednesday against the Blue Jackets, Shawn Mitchell of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: After missing the final 13 games of the regular season, Joe Vitale was back on the ice at morning skate and looks like he's check back in for duty as a bottom-six forward. Vitale finished the regular season with a goal and 13 assists over his 53 games.

Pens' Vitale Skates Wednesday

News: Joe Vitale (upper body) took part in line rushes during Wednesday's morning skate, Pens Inside Scoop reports.
Analysis: Joe Vitale hasn't played since March 20, but his presence in line rushes is a pretty good indicator that he's ready to return. The center recorded just one goal and 13 assists in 53 regular season games this year, so his absence wouldn't have a huge effect if he can't go.

Pens' Vitale (Upper Body) Skates Sunday

News: Joe Vitale (upper body) took the ice for the optional morning skate on Sunday.
Analysis: Joe Vitale hasn't played in a game for the Pens since March 20, but his participation in the optional skate on Sunday is a positive sign towards his availability for the playoffs. Vitale could find a place on the roster for the playoff run if he is healthy enough to return.

Pens' Vitale Out Saturday

News: Joe Vitale returned to Pittsburgh to have his mid-body injury evaluated.
Analysis: Joe Vitale has been out since March 20, but he reportedly took part in the Pens' morning skate last Sunday. The injury likely isn't healing as expected, and Vitale may miss the rest of the regular season.

Pens' Vitale Skates Sunday

News: Joe Vitale (upper-body) took part in the team's morning skate Sunday.
Analysis: While Joe Vitale skating is a positive sign, he is still considered week-to-week and is considered questionable for the rest of the regular season.

Penguins' Vitale Out With Upper-Body Injury

News: Joe Vitale will be sidelined this weekend with an upper-body injury, the Penguins' official Twitter feed reports.
Analysis: He will miss Saturday's game against the Lightning and Sunday's contest against the Blues, but he could return Tuesday against the Coyotes.

Pens' Vitale Returns Thursday

News: Joe Vitale (wrist) played just over 10 minutes (10:46 TOI) Thursday in his first action since Jan. 10, going pointless with a minus-1 rating.
Analysis: He's the type of player who likely offers more value to his team than fantasy owners. Joe Vitale won eight of 12 faceoffs against Montreal. He leads the Pens with a 63.4 percent win rate in the dot, but has just 13 points in 45 games.

Pens Activate Vitale From IR

News: Joe Vitale (wrist) was activated from injured reserve Thursday.
Analysis: The Penguins plan to use him as the fourth-line center in his return to action Thursday against the Canadiens, likely alongside Taylor Pyatt and Craig Adams. Joe Vitale hasn't played since Jan. 10 but proved productive in limited ice time before that, notching a goal and 12 assists over 44 games.

Pens' Vitale Practices Sunday

News: Joe Vitale (right wrist) returned to practice Sunday, Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Joe Vitale missed the previous 12 games before the break with the injury, but there seems to be some hope that he could make his return to the lineup within the next few contests. He's increased his stick-handling and shooting work in each of the last few days, but will need to incorporate more full-contact activities into his regimen before being activated from IR.

Pens' Vitale Hits IR With Wrist Injury

News: Joe Vitale (wrist) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: This move is largely procedural, as Joe Vitale is expected to miss the next three weeks with the wrist injury. Nick Drazenovic got the call to replace him on the roster and figures to head back down when Vitale is ready.

Pens' Vitale (Wrist) Out Three Weeks

News: Joe Vitale will miss the next three weeks with a wrist injury, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Add another forward to the Penguins' ever-increasing injury list. After getting a brief opportunity on Sidney Crosby's line following Pascal Dupuis' ACL injury, Joe Vitale quickly fell out of top-six duty, relinquishing most of his fantasy value. He was still a productive depth scorer with a goal and 12 assists in 44 games, but the Penguins will now have to dip back into their minor league system to replace him.

Pens' Vitale Out With Wrist Injury

News: The Penguins will re-evaluate Joe Vitale, who missed Saturday with a wrist injury, in the coming days, according to Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Analysis: Joe Vitale was seen wearing a brace on his right wrist after Saturday's win in Calgary. The Pittsburgh forward has scored 13 points in 44 games and leads the team with a 63.3 percent win rate in the faceoff circle.

Vitale's Visions With Crosby Don't Materialize

News: Joe Vitale played mostly on the third line Friday, filling in on Sidney Crosby's line occasionally when the team took draws in its own end.
Analysis: Pens coach Dan Bylsma moved James Neal up to the Crosby line whenever he felt the team needed offense. Joe Vitale played a strong game, but it doesn't appear an extended run with Crosby will materialize. The forward was held pointless against Carolina.

Pens' Vitale Practices With Crosby And Kunitz

News: Joe Vitale skated with Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz during Friday's game-day skate.
Analysis: With Pascal Dupuis sidelined, it looks like the Pens will give Joe Vitale first crack on the Crosby line. He has the speed to keep up with Crosby and a grinder's edge to match Kunitz's. Vitale has only eight goals and 32 points in 147 career NHL games, but could prove to be a worthy short-term pickup. The fourth-year forward has six points in his last 12 games.

Penguins' Vitale Not Out Because Of Injury

News: Joe Vitale was benched for his performance on faceoffs, and did not miss the past two games because of an injury, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: Joe Vitale's absence from Games 3 and 4 against the Senators was assumed to be injury-related, but it turns out that his play on faceoffs -- 9-of-21 in the series -- was the determining factor. It is unclear whether Vitale will be back in the lineup for Friday's Game 5.

Pens' Vitale (Undisclosed) Will Not Play Wednesday

News: Joe Vitale (undisclosed) will not play in Wednesday's Game 4 against the Senators, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Joe Vitale won't be ready to go in Game 4, but there was some hope he could practice earlier in the week so perhaps he'll be ready to go by the time Friday's tilt rolls around.

Vitale Will Likely Practice Tuesday

News: Joe Vitale (undisclosed) is expected to practice with the team Tuesday, Pens Inside Scoop reports.
Analysis: Joe Vitale only recorded one assist and four PIMs in four playoff games before being injured, so even when he's able to return his fantasy impact will likely be minimal.

Penguins' Vitale (Undisclosed) Out Sunday

News: Joe Vitale (undisclosed) will not take the ice for Sunday's Game 3 in Ottawa, Arpob Basu of LNH.com reports.
Analysis: Joe Vitale has appeared in just four of eight playoff tilts for the Penguins this postseason, tallying one assist with an even plus/minus on his line. When he does play, he's unlikely to log more than 10 minutes of ice time. Pittsburgh will miss his faceoff ability. Vitale has won 23 of 41 draws. No word on whether his absence is injury related or due to a personal issue. Tanner Glass will take his spot in the lineup.

Penguins Turn To Vitale

News: Joe Vitale expects to be in the lineup for Thursday's Game 5 against the Islanders, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Tyler Kennedy is expected to suit up Thursday as well, and if that's the case, the Penguins' healthy scratches up front would likely be Jussi Jokinen Beau Bennett, Tanner Glass and Dustin Jeffrey. Joe Vitale brings speed and energy to the table, with coach Dan Bylsma noting that the forward tends to play well upon being reinserted into the team's lineup.

Pens' Vitale Rejoins Team

News: Joe Vitale (lower body) rejoined the team Monday.
Analysis: Joe Vitale's status for Wednesday's Game 1 against the Islanders is still up in the air, but with five points in 33 games on the season, he shouldn't be counted on for too much production, even if he's healthy.

Penguins' Vitale Sits Thursday

News: Joe Vitale (lower body) will not play in Thursday's game against the Devils.
Analysis: Consider Joe Vitale, who checks in with seven points in 33 games and 17 PIMs, day-to-day, as Saturday's game against the Hurricanes approaches.

Pens' Vitale (Undisclosed) Back In Action

News: Joe Vitale (undisclosed) returned to practice Thursday and won't miss further game action, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Joe Vitale left Wednesday's game against the Canadiens after feeling some pain upon blocking a shot, but his return to full practice bodes well for his status going forward. With only five points and a minus-7 rating on his ledger this season, he's far from an ideal option in most fantasy formats.
