Devils' Gelinas Registers Assist

News: Eric Gelinas registered an assist in Tuesday's 2-0 win over the Penguins.
Analysis: With Peter DeBoer out of town, Eric Gelinas has been able to enjoy a regular role on the Devils' blue line, but it hasn't proven overly fruitful thus far. The 23-year-old has two goals, five points, and a minus-3 rating over 17 games since the All-Star break, numbers that don't justify a pickup in most formats.

Devils' Gelinas Riding The Pine

News: Eric Gelinas has been a healthy scratch for the Devils' last six games.
Analysis: Pete DeBoer may be out of town, but Eric Gelinas is still having trouble ingratiating himself to the Devils' new coaching staff. So long as he remains with the Devils, Gelinas's spotty defensive play may regularly prevent him from putting his bountiful offensive skills on display.

Devils' Gelinas Giving Way To Harrold On Friday

News: Eric Gelinas will give way to Peter Harrold for Friday's game against the Penguins, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: Harrold will replace Eric Gelinas on the third defensive pairing, skating alongside Jon Merrill. Gelinas has been a healthy scratch on a number of different occasions this season, but he does have a respectable 11 points in 34 appearances.

New Jersey's Gelinas Back In Action

News: Eric Gelinas (illness) is slated to play Monday against the Sharks, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: Per the report, both Eric Gelinas -- who has 11 points in 32 games -- and Jacob Josefson are in line to play Monday, with Peter Harrold and and Joe Whitney slated to sit.

Devils' Gelinas Activated, Won't Play Wednesday

News: Eric Gelinas (illness) was activated from injured reserve but will not play in Wednesday's game against the Kings, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: GM Lou Lamoriello said Eric Gelinas is close to being 100 percent recovered from a severe case of the flu, but the Devils will hold him out for one more game as a precaution. Gelinas, who is still trying to gain back the six or seven pounds he lost while ill, is expected to return to action Friday versus the Ducks.

Devils' Gelinas (Illness) Moved To IR

News: Eric Gelinas (illness) was placed on injured reserve Friday, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: Eric Gelinas resumed skating with the team Friday morning, so the placement on IR shouldn't be viewed as a setback, but instead, a procedural move. The blueliner has already been out for the minimum seven days due to the flu, but after a few more days of conditioning work, he should be ready to return to action next week.

Devils' Gelinas (Illness) Skates Friday

News: Eric Gelinas (illness) was on the ice for Friday's morning skate.
Analysis: It's the first time Eric Gelinas has been able to join the team since acquiring the illness exactly a week earlier. The Devils may be reluctant to let him return to action Friday against the Islanders due to the lost conditioning time, but an official decision on his status hasn't been made.

Devils' Gelinas To Remain Out Thursday

News: Eric Gelinas (illness) will not travel with the team to Boston for Thursday's game, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: Instead, Eric Gelinas will stay in New Jersey and skate on his own for the first time since attaining the illness last Friday. He might need a few days to get his conditioning up to par before the Devils feel comfortable using him in their lineup.

Devils' Gelinas Out Tuesday

News: Eric Gelinas (illness) is still under the weather and will not play Tuesday against the Sabres, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: Eric Gelinas will miss his third consecutive game Tuesday. He'll now take aim at a return Thursday against Boston.

Devils' Gelinas (Illness) Not Improving

News: GM Lou Lamoriello indicated Eric Gelinas (illness) has "a strong case of the flu" and isn't improving, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: Eric Gelinas caught a bug that has gone around the locker room, and it seems to have hit him hardest. With the news that he isn't showing much improvement, it seems doubtful he will be able to play Tuesday against the Sabres. Assuming he is indeed out, Gelinas' next chance to return will come Thursday against the Bruins.

Illness Sidelines Devils' Gelinas On Saturday

News: Eric Gelinas (illness) will remain out of the lineup Saturday against the Flyers, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: GM Lou Lamoriello said that while it doesn't appear Eric Gelinas is dealing with the mumps at this time, he remained under the weather for the second straight day and will be forced to sit out another game. With Peter Harrold (head) also due to miss Saturday's game, Mark Fraser was recalled from AHL Albany to give the Devils six bodies on defense.

Devils' Gelinas Out With Illness Friday

News: Eric Gelinas was absent from the Devils' morning skate due to an illness and will not play Friday versus the Canadiens, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: GM Lou Lamoriello said that it doesn't appear Eric Gelinas is suffering from any symptoms of the mumps thus far, but given how many Devils players have already succumbed to the virus, it probably can't be ruled out at this point. Seth Helgeson will replace Gelinas in Friday's lineup while the team waits to see if the blueliner makes progress from the illness over the next couple of days.

Devils' Gelinas Press-Box Bound Again

News: Eric Gelinas will head to the press box for the second straight game Thursday versus the Flyers, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: Though he possesses as much offensive potential as any of the Devils' blueliners, Eric Gelinas has often found himself in coach Pete DeBoer's doghouse for his inconsistency in his own zone. He'd surely benefit from a trade to a team with a less demanding coach, but for now, the Devils will attempt to stay patient with him in the hope that he eventually irons out his defensive flaws.

Devils Make Gelinas A Healthy Scratch

News: Eric Gelinas will be a healthy scratch for Tuesday's game against the Blackhawks, NHL.com's Dan Rosen reports.
Analysis: Eric Gelinas saw just 7:27 of action in Monday's game against the Hurricanes, with coach Pete DeBoer benching him for the final 29:39 of the outing. He's only two games removed from a two-point performance, but his frequent defensive lapses have prevented him from becoming a more permanent fixture in the lineup.

Goal, Assist For Devils' Gelinas

News: Eric Gelinas scored a power-play goal and added a power-play assist Thursday in a 5-3 win over Toronto.
Analysis: Eric Gelinas has the reputation of a power-play specialist, but these were actually his first man-advantage points since Oct. 25. His production's been spotty this year, but those nine points in 21 games are enough for him to play in deep formats.

Devils' Gelinas A Healthy Scratch Tuesday

News: Eric Gelinas will be a healthy scratch Tuesday against the Canucks, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: Eric Gelinas has been a lineup fixture for the Devils since Bryce Salvador and Jon Merrill landed on injured reserve, but he'll bow out Tuesday, as coach Pete DeBoer looks to give Peter Harrold his first appearance of the season. The 23-year-old Gelinas has generally lived up to his reputation with seven points in 18 games, but he could still be at risk of becoming scratched with more regularity once Merrill or Salvador returns.

Gelinas Assists On Both Devils Goals Friday

News: Eric Gelinas assisted on both of New Jersey's goals in Friday's 2-0 win over the Oilers.
Analysis: Both goals came at even strength, allowing Eric Gelinas to finish with a plus-2 rating as well. He now has 37 shots, 10 PIM, and a plus-2 rating in 17 games this year, while his modest seven points lump him in with Mared Zidlicky (nine points) and Damon Severson (eight points) for most among Devils defenders.

Devils' Gelinas Nets Goal

News: Eric Gelinas netted his second goal of the season in Saturday's loss to the Avalanche.
Analysis: Jon Merrill's absence due to an upper-body injury has allowed Eric Gelinas to enjoy regular run in the lineup of late, but he hadn't displayed much offense prior to Saturday's outing. The goal marked the second-year blueliner's first point since Oct. 25, snapping a streak of seven scoreless games. That's hardly impressive for a defenseman who hangs his hat on his ability as a puck mover.

Devils' Gelinas Won't Play Saturday

News: Eric Gelinas will be a healthy scratch Saturday against the Blue Jackets, Mike Morreale of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Saturday's game will be the second time in as many games that Eric Gelinas watches from the press box. The blueliner picked up a goal and three assists in eight games to start the season but has a minus-2 rating overall and will look to work his way back into the lineup Tuesday against the Blues.

Devils' Gelinas Bags First Goal

News: Eric Gelinas netted his first goal of the season in Friday's shootout loss to the Stars.
Analysis: After serving as a healthy scratch the game prior, Eric Gelinas made coach Pete DeBoer's decision to return him to the lineup a wise one, tallying the goal just 5:21 into Friday's contest. Gelinas' work on the defensive end could use some refinement, but for fantasy purposes, the burst of offensive production he's provided during his brief NHL career makes him worth a look if he's available.

Devils' Gelinas Back In Friday

News: Eric Gelinas will likely get back on the ice Friday, the the Record's Tom Gulitti reports.
Analysis: It looks like Adam Larsson will be a healthy scratch Friday, which was the case for Eric Gelinas earlier in the week. Gelinas has shown plenty of offensive ability during his brief NHL career and has two points in five games on the season, but fellow young blueliner Damon Severson has outshone him thus far in the early going.

Devils' Gelinas A Healthy Scratch Tuesday

News: Eric Gelinas will be a healthy scratch Tuesday against the Rangers.
Analysis: Eric Gelinas often drew the ire of coach Pete DeBoer as a rookie, but he seems to have solidified a regular spot in the lineup for the most part. His absence Tuesday probably has more to do with DeBoer just wanting to find some work for seventh defenseman Adam Larsson, who had been a healthy scratch for the Devils' first five games of the season.

Devils' Gelinas: Two Helper Night

News: Eric Gelinas picked up two assists in just under 15 minutes of ice time Saturday against the Flyers.
Analysis: He's still on a leash after working hard to prove his mettle during camp. But he can best his 29-point career high-water mark as long as he can stay out of the proverbial dog house.

Gelinas Needs To Impress Devils' Coaches

News: Eric Gelinas will need to earn the trust of the New Jersey coaching staff in order to secure a spot in the team's lineup.
Analysis: Eric Gelinas had a rather up-and-down rookie season, with the bulk of his 29 points coming early in his 60 games. He spent several stints in the minors and will need to play well in preseason games to earn a regular spot on the roster. He offers a ton of offensive upside, especially on the power play where he snagged 17 points, but him receiving regular ice time will come down to how he plays in his own zone. The Devils' coaching staff love their veterans and Gelinas had a rather short leash last season. He's worth a risk, just don't make it a sizable one in most leagues.

Gelinas Signs Before Devils Camp

News: Eric Gelinas signed a one-year, one-way contract worth $900,000 on Monday and will report to training camp.
Analysis: Getting Eric Gelinas, a restricted free agent, back under contract avoids a holdout by the 23-year old blue liner who snagged 29 points in a scattered 60-game campaign as a rookie one year earlier. The majority of Gelinas's points came before the All-Star break but he also saw himself shuttled between the NHL bench and Albany (AHL) in addition to having his ice time cut severely in some games. He played several games as a 13th forward and some as a seventh defensemen, seeing only power-play time. While Gelinas is under contract, he is, by no means, guaranteed a regular role on the team despite his considerable offensive upside. The team's coaching staff regularly made it known they want Gelinas to improve defensively before giving him a larger role on the team. Monitor his ice time in preseaon games but it's too early to go all-in on Gelinas considering the Devils, despite having an opening, had a tendency to play with his ice time, appearing noncommittal as to whether he would have a regular role on the team last season. Tread carefully.
