Backlund Called Up By Philly

News: Philadelphia called up Backlund and eight others on an emergency basis for the playoffs, the Philadelphia News reports.
Analysis: None of the players are likely to see the ice for Philadelphia. The others were Ben Holmstrom, Erik Gustafsson, Matt Walker, Kevin Marshall, Zac Rinaldo, Michael Ryan, Mike Testwuide and Eric Wellwood.

Backlund Sent From Flyers to Phantoms

News: Backlund was sent to the Phantoms on Monday, Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News reports.
Analysis: Depending on the health of Michael Leighton, there's a good chance that Backlund will see a few stints with the Flyers this season, but for now there's no reason to stash him away on your bench.

Backlund back in uniform Wednesday

News: Flyers G Johan Backlund was back in uniform for game one of their first-round Eastern Conference playoff series against the Devils on Wednesday. He had been bothered by a groin injury, and not appeared in a game since March 27. Brian Boucher was in net the entire way for Philadelphia's 2-1 win.
Analysis: Backlund made only one appearance during his inaugural NHL season with the injury-plagued Flyers. He certainly didn't get a chance to show much, but going into 2010/11 his Fantasy value lies in long-term keeper leagues because of his potential.

Backlund a scratch Friday

News: Flyers G Johan Backlund did not play in Friday's game against the Rangers due to a groin injury. He's missed Philadelphia's last six games.
Analysis: The Flyers might want to get another look at the Swedish import, but it's unlikely Backlund will play the rest of the way. He's only played in one game this season, so combined with his injury status he is a very risky play in daily Fantasy formats. Backlund is more of a long-term Fantasy keeper.

Backlund still not in uniform

News: Flyers G Johan Backlund (groin) did not return to the lineup on Tuesday against the Maple Leafs. He has missed the last four games and remains day to day.
Analysis: The Flyers signed Sebastien Caron on Friday, in case Backlund can't play again this season. Philadelphia would love nothing more than to get Backlund active, but since the Swede figures into the team's long-term plans, the Flyers aren't rushing him back. Backlund is more of a long-term Fantasy keeper.

Backlund continues to sit out

News: Flyers G Johan Backlund (groin) did not return to the lineup on Sunday against the Red Wings. He has missed the last three games and remains day to day.

Philadelphia would love nothing more than to get Backlund active, but since the Swede figures into the team's long-term plans, the Flyers aren't rushing him back. Backlund in street clothes Friday

News: Flyers G Johan Backlund did not suit up for Friday's game against the Canadiens due to a groin injury. He last appeared in net on March 27.
Analysis: Backlund might be done for the rest of the regular season, if his injury continues to linger. Even when he is healthy, Backlund might only see a start or two as a backup to Brian Boucher. Backlund is more of a long-term Fantasy keeper.

Backlund not on bench Thursday

News: Flyers G Johan Backlund (groin) did not return to action on Thursday against the Islanders. He has been scratched for the last two games.
Analysis: Backlund might be done for the rest of the regular season, if his injury continues to linger. Even when he is healthy, Backlund might only see a start or two as a backup to Brian Boucher. Backlund is more of a long-term Fantasy keeper.

Backlund doesn't dress Sunday

News: Flyers G Johan Backlund was not in uniform on Sunday against the Devils, a day after re-injuring his groin against the Penguins.
Analysis: Backlund was recalled from the AHL earlier in the week despite a minor groin injury. He made it through 40 minutes on Saturday before he couldn't take the pain any further. The Flyers might want to get a look at the Swedish import in the final weeks, but this groin injury definitely prevents them from that. Backlund is more of a long-term Fantasy keeper.

J. Backlund latest hurt Flyers goalie

News: Flyers G Johan Backlund played 40 minutes in Saturday's loss to the Penguins before leaving with a lower-body injury. Backlund allowed two goals on 24 shots.
Analysis: So this makes three Flyers goalies who have been hurt this season with Ray Emery (hip) and Michael Leighton (ankle) out for at least the rest of the regular season. He was called up to cover for No. 1 Brian Boucher, but could now miss some time. Backlund pretty much remains just a long-term Fantasy keeper.

Flyers put Backlund in minors

News: The Flyers sent G Johan Backlund to Adirondack of the AHL on Wednesday after Philadelphia claimed G Michael Leighton off waivers from Carolina on Tuesday.
Analysis: Backlund is an overseas import getting adjusted to North American hockey, so it might be a little bit longer until we see his full potential. Backlund is nothing more than a long-term Fantasy keeper.

Flyers lose G Emery for 6 weeks

News: Flyers goalie Ray Emery will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair a torn muscle in his lower abdomen, and is expected to miss about six weeks. Philadelphia general manager Paul Holmgren made the announcement Tuesday night before the Flyers played the New York Islanders. The Flyers, who lost five straight and eight of nine, recalled goalie Johan Backlund from the Adirondack Phantoms, but will rely heavily on Brian Boucher. Emery hadn't been playing well, and was pulled from Saturday's game against the Washington Capitals after allowing five goals. Holmgren said the injury played a part in Emery's slump. "You know how hard he practices," Holmgren said. "He's been trying to fight through this, but couldn't practice the way he normally does, and his game suffered. He's a down young man, and feels he let his team down."
Analysis: Emery had been awful lately and appeared to be losing his grip on the No. 1 spot in Philly even before the injury. That spot now belongs to Boucher, though his Fantasy value shouldn't improve that much. Backlund should barely be owned in Fantasy play and the Flyers TG probably isn't even worth using as a No. 2 unit anymore.

Backlund needed for start of season

News: The Times Herald reports Flyers goalie Brian Boucher is out 7-10 days with a lower-body injury suffered during Saturday's preseason game against the Devils. Boucher is expected to miss the first three games of the season. Johan Backlund will provide backup for Ray Emery in the meantime.
Analysis: Backlund was signed as a free agent this summer by the Flyers. The 28-year-old goalie has a wealth of experience playing over in the Swedish Elite League. "We were happy with his camp when we sent him down (to the AHL," GM Paul Holmgrem said of Backlund. "We wanted to get him playing and give Brian and Ray the time they needed to play for the regular season. With Brian getting injured, it kind of throws a wrench into that." Backlund will be back in the minors as soon as Boucher is healthy, so he has minimal Fantasy appeal. The Flyers TG remains a No. 2 Fantasy option to open the season. Emery will see the bulk of starts with Boucher sidelined.
