Red Wings' Mrazek To Compete With Howard For Job

News: Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said Friday that Petr Mrazek and Jimmy Howard need to begin their competition for the 2015-16 starting job in May, NHL.com's Bill Roose reports.
Analysis: There's not much either goaltender can do to make an impression in May, but Holland's point is that it will be a close battle and both players need to show up to training camp in top shape. While the 23-year-old Petr Mrazek appears to be the franchise's top netminder of the future, it's possible Howard could regain the starting job to begin the 2015-16 season.

Red Wings' Mrazek Takes Loss In Game 7

News: Petr Mrazek stopped 15 of 16 shots Wednesday against the Lightning, but it wasn't enough as the Red Wings took a 2-0 loss in Game 7. The second goal was an empty-netter.
Analysis: The Red Wings nearly doubled up the Lightning in shot attempts, but were unable to muster many good opportunities against Ben Bishop, who pitched a shutout for the home team. Petr Mrazek held the opposition off the board for the first two periods, but an unlucky bounce on a shot by the Bolts' Braydon Coburn gave his squad a 1-0 lead that would be all it needed on the evening. Mrazek still came away as the game's third star and capped off an excellent series, finishing with a 2.11 GAA, .925 save percentage, and two shutouts in his seven postseason starts. It's not clear at this point if Mrazek has permanently displaced Jimmy Howard as the Red Wings' No. 1 goalie entering 2015-16, but his stellar play in the postseason certainly bolsters his cause.

Detroit Turns To Mrazek In Game 7

News: Petr Mrazek is slated to square off against the Lightning's Ben Bishop in Wednesday's Game 7 at Tampa Bay, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Petr Mrazek -- who allowed four goals on 27 shots in Monday's loss to the Lightning -- will look to bounce back Wednesday in his first elimination game at the NHL level. In the wake of Monday's defeat, Mrazek has compiled a 2.29 GAA and .924 save percentage through the first six games of Detroit's first-round playoff series.

Wings' Mrazek Allows Four In Loss

News: Petr Mrazek allowed four goals on 27 shots in Monday's Game 6 loss to the Lightning.
Analysis: Petr Mrazek has played great at times this series as he's notched a pair of shutouts, but he's also now allowed 11 goals in the three losses. He did make some highlight-reel caliber saves Monday though, and certainly wasn't solely to blame for the loss. The Wings will likely need another strong performance out of Mrzek in Wednesday's Game 7 if they hope to advance to the second round.

Wings Stick With Mrazek

News: Petr Mrazek is slated to start Monday's Game 6 against the Lightning.
Analysis: Petr Mrazek, who has manned the Detroit net for all but one period through the first five games of the series, heads into Monday's home tilt having limited the high-powered Lightning to nine goals on 143 shot attempts in that span.

Wings' Mrazek: Second Shutout In Last Three Games

News: Petr Mrazek blanked the Lightning on Saturday for the second time this postseason. He delivered a 28-save, 4-0 victory and staked the Red Wings to a 3-2 series lead.
Analysis: Geez, you think this guy's confidence is soaring right now? Wow. The shutout is his second in three games who came into this series with no previous NHL playoff experience. And by the way, the Bolts were only the NHL's highest-scoring team during the regular season. Jimmy Howard who?

Wings' Mrazek Will Start Saturday

News: Petr Mrazek will be in net for Saturday's Game 5 against Tampa Bay, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Petr Mrazek will look to rebound from his relatively poor performance in Game 4 of the series, in which he allowed three goals on 29 shots. It appears the Red Wings are committed to riding Mrazek for the duration of the series, with longtime No. 1 netminder Jimmy Howard taking a back seat.

Mrazek, Wings Drop Game 4

News: Petr Mrazek allowed three goals on 29 shots Thursday to take a Game 4 overtime loss at the hands of the Lightning.
Analysis: Petr Mrazek carried a 2-0 lead into the third period with the Wings gunning for a 3-1 series lead, but he gave up two goals in the final six minutes, then Tyler Johnson broke through against the Czech goalie just 2:25 into overtime. This playoff series has been a mixed bag for Mrazek, as he's given up seven goals in the two losses, but he's also the reason that the Wings have their two wins.

Wings Go With Mrazek For Game 4

News: Petr Mrazek will be in the net for Thursday's Game 4 against the Lightning, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: After keeping the opposition off the board Tuesday night, Petr Mrazek enters Game 4 with back-to-back shutouts of the Bolts at Joe Louis Arena, which includes a 4-0 blanking back on March 28. While Mrazek could still lose his hold on the Red Wings' No. 1 job with a rough performance Thursday, the Czech netminder has probably built up enough goodwill at this point to get the nod over Jimmy Howard for the remainder of the series.

Wings' Mrazek Bounces Back With Game 3 Shutout

News: Petr Mrazek turned aside all 22 shot attempts Tuesday to take home a 3-0 victory in Game 3 against the Lightning.
Analysis: After making 44 saves to win Game 1, Petr Mrazek got himself yanked by giving up four goals in Game 2 on Saturday, but he was perfect for the home fans in Detroit, giving the Wings a 2-1 series lead. Tampa's high-powered offense makes Mrazek a risky start, but it's hard to ignore how good he's been in these two wins.

Wings' Mrazek Yanked, But Will Be Back For Game 3

News: Petr Mrazek was chased from the net Saturday after allowing four goals on 18 shots. The Red Wings eventually lost the game 5-1 to the Lightning, but coach Mike Babcock is going back to Mrazek to start Game 3.
Analysis: He has a lot of confidence in the scrappy little guy, but how much? Or is it just dissatisfaction with Jimmy Howard? We don't know, but he'll get a chance at redemption back on home ice.

Red Wings' Mrazek To Start Game Three

News: Petr Mrazek will start game three against the Lightning on Tuesday, Joe McDonald of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Petr Mrazek was pulled for the third period of Saturday's 5-1 loss. He allowed four goals on 18 shots through two periods before being replaced by Jimmy Howard in the third. Despite Saturday's rough outing, coach Mike Babcock will stick with Mrazek in net for game three.

Red Wings' Mrazek Pulled For Third Period

News: Petr Mrazek will be replaced in net by Jimmy Howard for the third period of Saturday's game against Tampa Bay, Tim Kulfan of the Detroit News reports.
Analysis: Petr Mrazek got the start Saturday, but was burned for four goals on 18 shots through the first two periods. His next chance to return will be Tuesday for game three.

Wings' Mrazek To Start Saturday

News: Petr Mrazek will be between the pipes on Saturday for Game 2 of the Wings' playoff series against Tampa Bay, NHL.com's Bryan Burns reports.
Analysis: As expected, Petr Mrazek will get an opportunity to build on his excellent Game 1 performance, in which he turned away 44 of 46 shots, on Saturday. He'll likely remain Detroit's go to goaltender throughout their playoff run.

Wings' Mrazek Will Likely Start On Saturday

News: Petr Mrazek will likely get the nod again on Saturday for Game 2 of the Wings' playoff series against Tampa Bay, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: It's not surprising, as Petr Mrazek was phenomenal in Game 1, turning away 44 of 46 shots. He has secured himself as the Wings' top playoff netminder going forward.

Mrazek's 44 Saves Lead Wings To Game 1 Win

News: Petr Mrazek turned away 44 shots while letting just two past in Thursday's Game 1 victory over Tampa Bay.
Analysis: This was a bizarre game, with the Wings managing only 14 shots against Ben Bishop down the other end, but they scored more goals despite being outshot by a more than 3:1 ratio. But Petr Mrazek was a stud, securing his place as Detroit's top playoff netminder by turning away the Tampa attack again and again. Look for him between the pipes again in Game 2.

Wings' Mrazek To Start Game 1

News: Petr Mrazek will start Thursday's playoff opener against the Lightning, the Detroit News reports.
Analysis: Petr Mrazek, who went 16-9-2 with a 2.38 GAA and .918 save percentage with three shutouts during the regular season, will draw the nod over Jimmy Howard on Thursday, though the team's netminding plans beyond that have yet to be clarified.

Wings' Mrazek Wins Goalie Duel

News: Petr Mrazek made 35 saves Saturday in a goalie's duel with Carolina's Cam Ward. Detroit won 2-0 and had a late empty-net goal.
Analysis: It looks like he's ready for the postseason. The Wings will likely start with Jimmy Howard between the pipes, but we have to wonder how short the leash is on the starter. Petr Mrazek has, at times, been outstanding this season.

Wings' Mrazek To Start Saturday

News: Petr Mrazek will be in net Saturday against the Hurricanes.
Analysis: Neither Petr Mrazek nor Jimmy Howard has played particularly well down the stretch, so coach Mike Babcock may still be sorting out which goalie he wants to lean on during the playoffs. If Mrazek fares well Saturday, it's possible he may have the upper hand over Howard for the No. 1 job.

Mrazek, Wings Fall To Caps

News: Petr Mrazek allowed two goals on 28 shots in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Capitals.
Analysis: It wasn't a particularly bad outing for Petr Mrazek, but it's now his third straight loss and fifth in his last six starts nonetheless. The 23-year-old appears to have taken away the starting role from Jimmy Howard, even if he doesn't quite have a firm grasp on it yet, but coach Mike Babcock could elect to switch things up and turn to the veteran Howard more in the final three games as the Red Wings look to stay in the playoff picture.

Red Wings' Mrazek To Start Sunday

News: Petr Mrazek will start Sunday's game against the Capitals, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard will start Saturday's game against Minnesota, but coach Mike Babcock said that's mainly because the Red Wings have back-to-back games, according to Chuck Pleiness of the Macomb Daily. It seems Petr Mrazek is still ahead of Howard, though one bad outing could perhaps swing things back.

Third Period Sinks Mrazek, Wings

News: Petr Mrazek gave up three goals on 25 shots Thursday in a 3-2 loss to the Bruins.
Analysis: The third period was his undoing, as Petr Mrazek had a 2-0 lead early on in the frame, but then let the Bruins score three consecutive goals, including Zach Trotman's first NHL goal with 2:09 remaining. His up-and-down play may mean that Jimmy Howard gets to return to the net Saturday in Minnesota.

Red Wings' Mrazek Gets Call Again Thursday

News: Petr Mrazek will receive the start in goal Thursday against the Bruins, Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News reports.
Analysis: Petr Mrazek hasn't permanently unseated Jimmy Howard as the Red Wings' No. 1 goalie, but he certainly seems to be building momentum in that regard after another stellar outing Tuesday against the Senators. He was ultimately handed a 2-1 loss in overtime despite his 33-save effort, but it won't prevent him from earning his fourth start in a row. Expect Mike Babcock to stick with Mrazek so long as he continues to play well, but Howard is still expected to solidify himself as the Wings' top netminder before the playoffs begin.

Tough-Luck Loss For Wings' Mrazek

News: Petr Mrazek made 33 saves on 34 shots, but was stuck with a 2-1 shootout loss Tuesday against visiting Ottawa.
Analysis: The Wings did not play particularly well in this game, but their backup goalie held them in it all the way to the shootout, when he finally caved. Petr Mrazek's results have been a bit inconsistent, but he's now started three consecutive games, playing quite well in two of them. Meanwhile, the recently inconsistent Jimmy Howard's been doing a lot of watching.

Wings Go With Mrazek On Tuesday

News: Mrazak is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Senators, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Petr Mrazek, who was pulled from Sunday's game against the Islanders after giving up four goals on 11 shots, will look to bounce back Tuesday against a Sens squad that has cooled off of late, dropping three straight decisions.
