Pickard Inks One-Year Deal With Avalanche

News: Calvin Pickard signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Avalanche on Thursday, Drew Spevak of ESPNDenver.com reports.
Analysis: The 23-year-old will return as Colorado's top AHL goaltender in 2015-16. Calvin Pickard spent some time with the big club last season while Semyon Varlamov battled a groin injury, going 6-7-3 with a 2.35 GAA and a .932 save percentage. He's still behind Varlamov and Reto Barra on the Avalanche's depth chart, so it will likely take another injury for Pickard to get another shot at the NHL level this season.

Avs' Pickard Reassigned To Minors

News: Calvin Pickard was reassigned to AHL Lake Erie on Friday.
Analysis: Calvin Pickard was only up with the Avalanche as an emergency recall with Semyon Varlamov nursing a groin injury. Since Varlamov was able to return to the crease in Thursday's win over the Devils, Pickard will now have to head back to the minors, where he'll continue to serve as Lake Erie's No. 1 goalie. That being said, Varlamov's groin issues have been a persistent problem all season, and with the Avs' playoff hopes fading, there could be room for Pickard to get some run with the big club if the team decides to to shut down their No. 1 goalie.

Avs Yank Pickard In Loss

News: Calvin Pickard was pulled in the first period Tuesday after giving up three goals to the Kings on just eight shots.
Analysis: Making his first start since Jan. 13, Calvin Pickard was unable to replicate the wild success he experienced in November and December when Semyon Varlamov was out. Varly's day-to-day with a groin issue, so Pickard's latest stay in the NHL may not be long-lived.

Avs Turn To Pickard On Tuesday

News: Calvin Pickard will start Tuesday's game against the Kings.
Analysis: Calvin Pickard is thus in line to make his first start for the team since Jan. 13. He's drawing Tuesday's assignment, with top goalie Semyon Varlamov considered day-to-day with a groin injury.

Avs Recall Pickard

News: Calvin Pickard was recalled from AHL Lake Erie on Monday, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Per the report, Calvin Pickard was recalled for precautionary reasons after Semyon Varlamov was removed Sunday's contest with a lower-body injury. Reto Berra will likely get the starting nod if Varlamov is forced to miss any time, but Pickard will be available as the backup.

Avs Reassign Pickard

News: Calvin Pickard was reassigned to AHL Lake Erie on Thursday.
Analysis: Calvin Pickard had served has the backup to Semyon Varlamov for each of the last four games, so he'll head to the Avs' minor-league affiliate to see more action while the NHL breaks for the All-Star Game. The team had recently recalled Reto Berra from his conditioning assignment at Lake Erie, so it would seem likely that Pickard will remain in the minors even after the Avalanche resume play. However, should Varlamov or Berra sustain some sort of injury in the near future, Pickard would rank as the organization's first call-up.

Avs' Pickard Saves 44, But Takes Shootout Loss

News: Calvin Pickard put a stop to 44 of 46 shots Tuesday against Carolina, but allowed two shootout goals on two tries to end up with the loss.
Analysis: A sparkling 65 minutes from Calvin Pickard had some of the shine taken off by the unattractive shootout performance, but let's not be unimpressed by a 44-save evening. Despite a 6-6-3 record, Pickard has been as good as any goalie in the league in his limited action.

Avs' Pickard To Start Tuesday

News: Calvin Pickard will receive the start in goal for Tuesday's game against the Hurricanes, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The Avs called up Calvin Pickard from AHL Lake Erie after Saturday's game, sending Reto Berra to the minors to clear a spot for him. Though Berra has spent more time with the Avs this season, Pickard is effectively the No. 2 goalie in the organization, as he's almost always shined when called upon this season during Semyon Varlamov's absences. Pickard will make for a high-quality streaming option for Tuesday's slate against a weak Carolina attack, and could earn an additional start or two during what's expected to be a two-week stay with the parent club. His .934 save percentage over 14 appearances with the Avs thus far ranks second best among NHL goalies with at least that many outings.

Avs Recall Pickard

News: Calvin Pickard was recalled from AHL Lake Erie after Saturday's win over the Stars, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The Avalanche will begin a back-to-back set Monday in Washington, and with incumbent backup Reto Berra not an ideal option to spell for Semyon Varlamov for one of those games, it looks like Calvin Pickard will be the man to do so. Pickard has been superb over 14 games with the Avs this season, posting a 6-6-2 record, 2.21 GAA and .934 save percentage. He'll be an excellent streaming option if he ends up getting the second half of that back-to-back in Carolina on Tuesday.

Avs Assign Pickard To AHL

News: Calvin Pickard was reassigned to AHL Lake Erie on Sunday.
Analysis: The move is a bit of a surprise given Calvin Pickard's success in net compared to Reto Berra, but the 22-year-old is the younger of the two, and will head back to the AHL for more consistent playing time. The youngster still appears poised to be a candidate for a no. 1 goaltending job in the future.

Avs' Pickard Gives Up Four Goals In Loss

News: Calvin Pickard gave up four goals on 32 shots in Saturday's loss to Chicago.
Analysis: Not the best night for the 22-year-old youngster, who had only given up one goal in his previous three games. With Semyon Varlamov (groin) having returned from IR, expect the two goalies to continue sharing starts in the near-future. With a 6-6-2 record, to go with an NHL-leading .934 save percentage and 2.21 GAA, Calvin Pickard will need to continue his stellar play if he hopes to continue seeing starts at the NHL level this season.

Colorado's Pickard To Start Saturday

News: Calvin Pickard will get the start Saturday against the Blackhawks.
Analysis: The Avalanche will go with Semyon Varlamov (groin) on Tuesday against St. Louis in his return from IR, while Calvin Pickard will get the call over the weekend. Pickard, who is coming off of a stellar performance Sunday against Detroit - one goal allowed in 65:00 minutes - has allowed one goal in each of his last three starts and owns a 2.06 GAA for the season. The team currently has three healthy goalies on the roster, but given that Pickard became the team's most-trusted option in the net when Varlamov was out with the injury, he could have the upper hand on Reto Berra for top backup duties.

Avs' Pickard Stays Hot In Win

News: Calvin Pickard stopped 34 of the 35 shots he faced in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Red Wings.
Analysis: Calvin Pickard's now allowed just one goal in each of his last three games, winning the last two to go to 6-5-2. He's played very well during Semyon Varlamov's absence, and should continue to see the majority of the action until he returns.

Avs' Pickard Allows Two Goals In Last Two Games

News: Calvin Pickard made 28 saves in Saturday's 5-1 win over Buffalo.
Analysis: He has now allowed just two goals total in his last two games. He's playing sharp hockey right now and is a worthy activation while Semyon Varlamov is down.

Avs' Pickard Gets Saturday Nod

News: Calvin Pickard will be in the crease Saturday against the Sabres, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Coach Patrick Roy said earlier in the week that he would use Calvin Pickard for every game of the team's three-city road trip, so it's not a surprise that he'll be called upon Saturday. The Avs defense hasn't done him many favors over his last two outings, as he's faced a total of 86 shots during that span.

Avs' Pickard Heroic In OT Loss

News: Calvin Pickard withstood the first 47 shots put on him by the Penguins on Thursday, but was beaten by Blake Comeau on the 48th to take a 1-0 overtime loss.
Analysis: A brutal loss for Calvin Pickard, who denied Sidney Crosby on a breakaway and turned away snipers Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hornqvist six times each. Despite that he's lost four of his last five, Pickard has been a revelation in goal for the Avs. He's faced a ridiculous 187 shots over the last five games (that's more than 37 shots per game!), but has turned away 175 of them (good for a .936 save percentage).

Avs Plan To Start Pickard For Next Three Games

News: Coach Patrick Roy said after Tuesday's practice that he plans to use Calvin Pickard for each of the three games on their road trip that kicks off Thursday in Pittsburgh, Nick Groke of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: It's a huge show of faith in Calvin Pickard by coach Patrick Roy, who doesn't seem to find Reto Berra to be a reliable option in goal for the team while Semyon Varlamov (groin) remains sidelined. In addition to the Pittsburgh game, Pickard will get the call for both ends of the Avs' weekend back-to-back in Buffalo and Detroit. Varlamov, who practiced in full pads Wednesday, could be ready to go next week, which would force the team to make a decision on whether to keep Pickard around as the backup or send him back to the minors for regular playing time.

Avs' Pickard Stops 39 Shots In OT Loss

News: Calvin Pickard helped the Avalanche earn a point Saturday, making 39 saves on 42 shots in an overtime loss to the Blues.
Analysis: Calvin Pickard was outstanding in the loss, fending off a Blues team that sits second in the Western Conference. Pickard is now 4-5-1 this season with an impressive .927 save percentage and 2.42 GAA. With starter Semyon Varlamov (groin) sidelined, Pikcard has taken over goaltending duties in Colorado. While he has played great individually, wins are hard to come by on an Avalanche team that sits 12th in the Western Conference, having scored just seven goals in their last four games. If the Avs can start scoring more, the wins will follow for the 22-year-old Pickard.

Avs' Pickard Expected To Get Saturday Start

News: Calvin Pickard is expected to man the net Saturday against the Blues, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Calvin Pickard has been superb in both of his previous two starts since returning from the minors in the wake of Semyon Varlamov's groin injury, clipping the Jets in a shootout victory Thursday and taking a narrow defeat to the Predators on Tuesday. After Saturday's contest, the Avalanche will be off the schedule until next Thursday, so coach Patrick Roy shouldn't hesitate to go with Pickard for the third time in five days.

Pickard, Avs Come Away With Shootout Win

News: Calvin Pickard stopped 30 of 33 shots and both shootout attempts to come away with a win Thursday against the Jets.
Analysis: Calvin Pickard continues to deliver strong play in the absence of Semyon Varlamov (groin). In fact, Thursday's decent .909 save mark is the third-worst he's posted in nine games (six starts) so far this year. Now he just needs the Avs to get their game together more consistently to earn him some more wins.

Avs Rolling With Pickard On Thursday

News: Calvin Pickard will receive the start in goal Thursday versus the Jets. "Pickard's playing very well for us," coach Patrick Roy said after making the starting announcement.
Analysis: It's quite apparent that Roy doesn't trust Reto Berra in goal, and if not for Berra's one-way contract, Calvin Pickard would likely have stuck around as Semyon Varlamov's backup a few weeks ago. Nonetheless, with Varlamov down with a groin setback yet again, Pickard will step in to assume No. 1 duties for the Avalanche after turning in a credible outing in defeat Tuesday against the Avalanche. Pickard owns a 3-5 record, 2.30 GAA and .929 save percentage over his eight NHL appearances thus far.

Early Goal Dooms Pickard, Avs

News: Calvin Pickard allowed just a single goal on 34 shots Tuesday against Nashville, but Pekka Rinne spun a shutout on the other end and the Preds ended up with a 3-0 loss thanks to two empty-net goals.
Analysis: Calvin Pickard was stung by a beautiful Filip Forsberg breakaway goal just 2:23 into the game, then shut Nashville down completely, only to be victimized by his own team's stunningly brutal offense. Nonetheless, he's played quite capably thus far in his young NHL career and is seemingly set to be the Avs' primary netminder while Semyon Varlamov remains out with his latest groin setback.

Avs To Start Pickard On Tuesday

News: Calvin Pickard will be between the pipes Tuesday against the Predators, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The Avalanche appear set to proceed with Calvin Pickard as their No. 1 goalie for at least the next two weeks, after Semyon Varlamov endured yet another setback with his groin injury at Monday's practice. Pickard very nearly earned a permanent stay with the Avalanche during his most recent stint with the team, wherein he performed well while assuming the bulk of the starts in place of Varlamov. However, a four-goal dud against the Canadiens on Dec. 1 ultimately was the kiss of death, as the Avs decided to proceed with Reto Berra as their backup to Varlamov. Still, it seems coach Patrick Roy views Pickard as a more reliable option in net than Berra at this juncture, and if the young goalie can play consistently well this time around, the Avs may have no other choice but to waive Berra once Varlamov returns.

Avs Recall Pickard

News: Calvin Pickard was recalled from AHL Lake Erie on Monday.
Analysis: It was announced Monday that Semyon Varlamov re-injured his groin during the Avs' practice, prompting the team to bring back Calvin Pickard for what could be another multi-game run. During his last stay with the Avalanche, Pickard emerged as the coach Patrick Roy's preferred starting option over Reto Berra, so it seems likely that could be the case again. Pickard should be the favorite to make the start for the team Tuesday against the Predators, but his usage beyond that will hinge on how quickly Varlamov recovers from his latest setback.

Avs Reassign Pickard

News: Calvin Pickard was reassigned to AHL Lake Erie after Monday's game against the Canadiens.
Analysis: Calvin Pickard seemed to be on the cusp of unseating Reto Berra for backup duties behind Semyon Varlamov after drawing his third straight start Monday, but the poor performance against Montreal seems to have cost him that opportunity. Instead, coach Patrick Roy said that it was in Pickard's best interest to play regularly in the minors rather than regularly sitting behind Varlamov, who was activated from IR in a corresponding move and will be used heavily the rest of the way. The organization could revisit the decision to keep Berra as their No. 2 over Pickard, but there's no need to address it right now with Varlamov back at full health.
