Sabres' Pysyk Continues Slump

News: The Rochester Americans are struggling with five straight losses, and Mark Pysyk has been noticeably struggling, reports The Buffalo News.
Analysis: Mark Pysyk had his training camp cut short and it's really showing with the smooth-skating defenseman struggling to start the season. In Rochester on a conditioning assignment, Pysyk's stay may end up being longer if he doesn't pick up his play. The Sabres are also rotating Andre Benoit, Tyson Strachan and Nikita Zadorov, so there's not much room for him anyway.

Sabres Assign Pysyk To Minors

News: Mark Pysyk (upper body) was assigned to AHL Rochester on Thursday, Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports.
Analysis: It's not clear whether Mark Pysyk's assignment to the minors is for a long-term stay or just as part of a conditioning assignment. Pysyk indicated Thursday that he's been sidelined since the preseason due to a shoulder injury, but it appears he's finally reached the end of his recovery timetable.

Sabres' Pysyk Closing In On Return

News: Coach Ted Nolan said Tuesday that Mark Pysyk (upper body) is "very close" to returning to game action.
Analysis: Mark Pysyk has been out of commission since Sept. 23 with the upper-body injury, but he was able to take part in Tuesday's morning skate, a sign he's almost ready to go. Nolan said that after Pysyk gets some full-contact practice reps in, he'll likely be activated from injured reserve.

Sabres Place Pysyk On IR

News: Mark Pysyk (upper body) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports.
Analysis: Mark Pysyk is said to be closing in on a return to practice soon, but it still looks like he'll have to miss a few regular-season games. Since his training camp was abbreviated due to the injury, it wouldn't be a surprise if Pysyk was sent to AHL Rochester for a fairly lengthy rehab assignment once he's cleared to take full contact.

Sabres To Clear Pysyk For Practice

News: Mark Pysyk (upper body) will return to practice "within a week," reports The Buffalo News.
Analysis: Three spots are still up for grabs on defense and Mark Pysyk is still in the mix despite missing the past week with an upper body injury. The smooth-skating defenseman split the season between the NHL and AHL last year. Though Pysyk lacks size, he is not a physical defenseman, instead using his speed and passing ability to move the puck up the ice. Even if Pysyk makes the team, he has very minimal fantasy value at the moment.

Sabres' Pysyk Out One More Week

News: Mark Pysyk will be sidelined for one more week with an upper body injury.
Analysis: Mark Pysyk will be out for one more week after sustaining an upper body injury last Tuesday against Carolina. The smooth-skating defenseman is fighting for a roster spot and the injury certainly hurts his chances, but the Sabres will give him an opportunity to prove himself once he returns.

Sabres' Pysyk (Upper Body) Out 1-2 Weeks

News: Mark Pysyk (upper body) will likely be sidelined for one-to-two weeks, John Vogl of the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: While Mark Pysyk was fortunate to avoid a significant injury in Tuesday's exhibition victory over the Hurricanes, the ailment hurts Pysyk's chances of making the team. Though Pysyk played 44 games for the Sabres last year, he was facing tough competition in camp. There is no timetable for Pysyk's return, though head coach Ted Nolan promised that they would be patient and give him a chance to earn a roster spot. Pysyk's absence means Jake McCabe and Chad Ruhwedel get the inside track.

Sabres Coach: Pysyk Out

News: Sabres coach Ted Nolan said after Tuesday's exhibition that Mark Pysyk (upper body) would be out "for a little while," Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: It's difficult to ascertain an approximate return date from Nolan's quote, but his words seem to suggest Mark Pysyk is dealing with something more than the run-of-the-mill day-to-day concern. His hopes of cracking the Sabres' 23-man roster might have quite possibly come to an end following the injury setback.

Sabres' Pysyk Sustains Upper-Body Injury

News: Mark Pysyk suffered an upper-body injury in Tuesday's exhibition against the Hurricanes and did not return.
Analysis: Mark Pysyk skated for just 54 seconds Tuesday before departing, with no word yet on the severity of his injury. He's competing for a regular spot on one of the Sabres' three defensive pairings, with his hopes likely dashed if the injury proves to be a mid- or long-term concern.

Pysyk Handed Misconduct, Amerks Trail Series

News: Mark Pysyk was handed a 10-minute misconduct after he flipped the puck out of play in frustration after giving up a shorthanded goal in 4-0 loss Thursday in the AHL Playoffs.
Analysis: Mark Pysyk finished the game with 12 PIM and finished with a minus-1 rating playing alongside blue-chip prospect Rasmus Ristolainen on the Amerks' top pairing. The loss pushes Rochester to the brink of elimination, who managed just 18 shots against the Chicago Wolves. If Pysyk and Ristolainen can show some more chemistry playing together, they could start on the Sabres next year on the same pairing. The Amerks have to win Friday's game first, though.

Sabres Recall Pysyk

News: Mark Pysyk was recalled by the Sabres on Sunday, John Vogl of The Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: Psysyk will join the team for the season finale and will likely get a chance to see some ice time. He has been between the two teams throughout the season, and will look for a chance at a more consistent role with the Sabres in the 2014-15 season.

Sabres' Pysyk Reassigned To Minors

News: Mark Pysyk was assigned to AHL Rochester on Thursday.
Analysis: Mark Pysyk was only with the Sabres for one game, but he made the most of it by logging an assist and two penalty minutes in Tuesday's loss to the Red Wings. He should be a bigger part of the team's plans next season.

Pysyk Recalled By Sabres

News: The Sabres have recalled Mark Pysyk from AHL Rochester.
Analysis: Mark Pysyk, who has notched six points and recorded a minus-11 rating in 42 games with the big club to date, will bolster the depleted Buffalo blueline, which took another hit Sunday when Chad Ruhwedel suffered a concussion.

Sabres' Pysyk Sent To AHL

News: Mark Pysyk (undisclosed) was assigned to AHL Rochester on Friday, John Vogl of the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: Players who are eligible to play in the AHL during the Olympic break must be assigned by Friday, and the Sabres would like Mark Pysyk to play as many game as possible. Though Pysyk was dealing with a nagging injury, it likely had little to do with the decision. Pysyk hasn't scored since December 23, but he's a young, talented defenseman. The Sabres are hoping he can elevate his play once he returns to Buffalo.

Sabres' Pysyk Not Expected To Play Thursday

News: Head coach Ted Nolan said Mark Pysyk (undisclosed) is "hour-to-hour," but is unlikely to play Thursday, reports WGR 550 SportsRadio.
Analysis: It sounds like Mark Pysyk will be a game-time decision, but don't hold your breath with Alexander Sulzer ready to go. Sulzer was activated off the IR recently but was a healthy scratch for Buffalo's game on Tuesday. Sulzer brings a little more defense to the table than Pysyk as the Sabres attempt to stop a four-game losing skid during which they've allowed 16 goals.

Sabres' Pysyk Misses Practice

News: Mark Pysyk sat out Wednesday's practice with a nagging injury.
Analysis: There's no word on the severity of the injury, but it sounds like the blueliner should be considered day-to-day until we know more. Mark Pysyk has one goal and five assists in 42 games on the season.

Sabres' Pysyk Scores Winner

News: Mark Pysyk scored the game-winner in overtime against the Coyotes on Monday.
Analysis: Mark Pysyk was called up from the AHL for this game, his first with the Sabres since December 12. It was his first goal and his fifth point on the season.

Sabres Recall Pysyk

News: Mark Pysyk was recalled from AHL Rochester on Monday, Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports.
Analysis: After earning an Opening Night roster spot with a strong training camp, Mark Pysyk mostly languished in his 31 games with the Sabres, scoring just four points and posting a minus-11 rating before he was shipped out to Rochester. He could just be in line for a short-term appointment with the Sabres this time around.

Sabres' Pysyk Won't Partake In Spengler Cup

News: Demoted to Rochester on Tuesday, interim head coach Ted Nolan clarified the move and said Mark Pysyk will not play in the Spengler Cup, reports Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald.
Analysis: The demotion is an odd move if the Sabres don't plan on letting Mark Pysyk play in the Spengler Cup. Nolan has been using all sorts of lineups this year and has often talked about his desire to see everyone play. Despite being involved in junior hockey, Nolan has a reputation for eschewing young prospects and leaning on more veteran players. Despite being one of Buffalo's better defensemen this year, Nolan will give Chad Ruhwedel, who is two years older than Pysyk, a good look.

Sabres Send Pysyk To Rochester

News: The Sabres have sent Mark Pysyk down to AHL Rochester.
Analysis: With four points (all assists) and a minus-11 rating through 31 games, Mark Pysyk wasn't providing much for fantasy owners in Buffalo anyway. Chad Ruhwedel has been called up to replace Pysyk on the roster. This demotion isn't necessarily a knock against Pysyk's play -- the Sabres simply want him to play more regularly with the Amerks headed to Switzerland for the six-team Spengler Cup tournament, the second time an AHL team has accepted an invitation.

Sabres' Pysyk To Sit Against Flyers

News: Mark Pysyk will be a healthy scratch when the Sabres play the Flyers on Thursday night, reports Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald.
Analysis: Mark Pysyk has been one of the Sabres' better defenseman this year, but played poorly Tuesday night in a 4-1 loss to the Blues. He'd been playing on the first pairing with Christian Ehrhoff and averaging almost 21 minutes a night. Don't expect Pysyk to be a healthy scratch for too long -- he's one of Buffalo's best skaters and this benching is head coach Ted Nolan's way of sending a message as well as giving Brayden McNabb a good look. Adjust your rosters accordingly.

Pysyk Active In Sabres' Win

News: Mark Pysyk assisted on two of Buffalo's three goals in Friday's 3-1 win over Toronto.
Analysis: Mark Pysyk isn't known as a regular scorer from the blue line, but he has almost as many points as more offensively skilled players like Tyler Myers and Christian Ehrhoff. Don't rely on Pysyk for regular production.

Sabres' Pysyk In Line To Open Season With Sabres

News: Mark Pysyk appears to have locked down an Opening Night roster spot with the Sabres, the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: The 21-year-old hasn't been flashy in the preseason, but has been steady defensively and generally aware of his positioning on the blueline, a welcome sight for a Sabres squad that often failed to provide adequate protection for goaltender Ryan Miller last season. Mark Pysyk isn't expected to be much of a contributor offensively or by traditional fantasy numbers, but should at least see healthy minutes due to his strength and smarts.

Buffalo's Pysyk Ticketed For AHL

News: Mark Pysyk, who played 17:49 in Buffalo's 2-1 shootout win over the Islanders on Friday, is expected to join Rochester (AHL) for the AHL's playoffs where they will face Toronto (AHL), according to the Associated Press.
Analysis: Mark Pysyk, along with Mikhail Grigorenko and Brian Flynn, will help to bolster the Rochester roster as they compete for the Calder Cup.

Sabres' Pysyk Grabs Two Assists

News: Mark Pysyk collected a pair of assists in Tuesday's win over the Penguins.
Analysis: Two games ago, he scored his first NHL goal, so this is a nice little run for Mark Pysyk. As a bonus, he also went plus-2 -- his first game with a positive rating since April 2. The Sabres' 2010 first-rounder, 23rd overall, is flashing some nice offensive potential, but still has a ways to go after posting just 18 points in 57 games for AHL Rochester this year.
