Rangers' Stepan On A Roll

News: Derek Stepan registered an assist in Tuesday's 4-2 triumph over the Capitals.
Analysis: Derek Stepan has pointed in four consecutive games, mostly serving in a facilitating capacity for the Rangers' top line. The center is only attempting just over two shots per game and only has three goals in 20 contests, but the talent surrounding him at both even strength and with the man advantage should continue to result in crooked assist totals.

Rangers' Stepan Has Two-Point Night

News: Derek Stepan scored a wraparound goal, added a shorthanded assist and went plus-2 in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Flames.
Analysis: Derek Stepan's point production had slowed recently, as he'd managed just a lone assist over the last four games, so it's good to see him pick things up again offensively and post his first positive rating since a plus-2 performance Nov. 28. He remains, however, a liability in the faceoff circle, as Step's 9-and-9 performance Tuesday is about as much as you can expect from him. He hasn't had more wins than losses at the dot in almost a month, dating back to Nov. 17.

Rangers' Stepan Notches Assist Saturday

News: Derek Stepan recorded his 14th assist of the season in Saturday's win over the Canucks.
Analysis: Derek Stepan didn't attempt any shots in the game, but didn't need to in a game the Rangers dominated from the opening puck drop. He's only potted two goals in his 15 games on the season, but that number should rise once his current 5.6 shooting percentage more closely approaches his 11.1 percent career rate.

Rangers' Stepan Notches Assist Trick

News: Derek Stepan assisted on all three of the Rangers' goals in Friday's triumph over the Flyers.
Analysis: Derek Stepan was credited with an assist at even strength, with the man advantage, and on the penalty kill, showcasing the versatility he offers as the Rangers' top-line center. He's shown no ill effects since returning from the fractured fibula that kept him out of action until Nov. 8, producing two goals and nine helpers over 10 games.

Rangers' Stepan Hasn't Skipped A Beat

News: Derek Stepan scored an early second period goal in Sunday's 5-0 win over Montreal.
Analysis: After missing the first five weeks of the season, the 24-year-old veteran has seemingly stepped back in without skipping a beat. While the coaching staff would likely prefer face-off numbers than the 50-percent ratio he put up on Sunday, two goals and five assists in his first eight contests is something both the organization and fantasy owners are enjoying.

Friday's Game Postponed For Rangers, Stepan

News: Derek Stepan and the Rangers had their scheduled game Friday against the Sabres postponed due to the extreme weather conditions in the Buffalo area, Andrew Gross of the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: With some parts of the region receiving up to six feet of snow this week, traveling to Buffalo would have proven quite treacherous for the Rangers had the game been played as scheduled. No make-up date has been announced yet for the game, but expect Derek Stepan to be in the lineup for the Rangers' next contest Sunday versus Montreal.

Rangers' Stepan Adds Assist In Win

News: Derek Stepan recorded an assist in Wednesday's 2-0 win over the Flyers.
Analysis: Since returning from a broken leg suffered in the preseason, Derek Stepan has returned to form as one of the most consistent centers in the NHL. He now has a goal and five assists in seven games, and his recent performances should quell any lingering worries fantasy owners may have had about his health moving forward.

Rangers' Stepan Registers First Goal

News: Derek Stepan scored his first goal of the year and tallied in the shootout Thursday, but it wasn't enough in a 4-3 loss to the Avalanche.
Analysis: The Rangers missed Derek Stepan while he was out due to a broken leg, and he's been productive since returning, with four points in as many games. There's no reason he shouldn't keep it rolling.

Round Stat Line For Rangers' Stepan

News: Derek Stepan picked up two assists -- one on the power play -- and went plus-2 with two PIM in Tuesday's 5-0 rout of the Penguins.
Analysis: Derek Stepan looked much stronger in this one than he did in his first two games back from a broken leg, as he finished positive in faceoffs for the first time this year and created Rick Nash's shorthanded goal by winning a race behind the Penguins' net and making a slick feed to Nash in the slot. Despite having missed a dozen games, Stepan could still very well clear 50 points this season.

Rangers' Stepan Gets Assist In Season Debut

News: Derek Stepan picked up an assist in 17:26 of ice time in his season debut Saturday.
Analysis: Expect the ice time numbers to start to increase once he gets his legs under him. Wait a couple games to get him back in there.

Rangers Activate Stepan

News: Derek Stepan (leg) was officially activated from injured reserve Saturday.
Analysis: The Rangers announced after Friday's practice that Derek Stepan had been cleared to make his season debut Saturday against the Maple Leafs. He shouldn't face any limitations in the game and will center a line of Chris Kreider and Mats Zuccarello.

Rangers' Stepan Set To Play Saturday

News: As expected, Derek Stepan (leg) will make his season debut Saturday against the Maple Leafs.
Analysis: Derek Stepan missed the Rangers' first 12 games with a fractured fibula, but after practicing throughout the week, he's finally ready to resume his duties in the team's top six. The Rangers will likely wait until Saturday morning before officially activating him, but fantasy owners should begin preparing a spot to slide the center into their lineups. Stepan is expected to skate next to Chris Kreider and Mats Zuccarello in Saturday's contest.

Rangers' Stepan Preparing To Debut Saturday

News: Derek Stepan (fractured fibula) appears set to make his season debut Saturday against the Maple Leafs, Andrew Gross of The Record reports.
Analysis: With center Chris Mueller returning to AHL Hartford on Thursday, the Rangers already have opened a spot for Derek Stepan's return to the active roster, suggesting he'll be activated from long-term injured reserve in advance of Saturday's game. The team will likely wait for Stepan to complete Friday's full-contact practice before doing so, but barring any unforeseen setbacks, the Rangers should have their No. 1 center back in commission. He required about six weeks to recover from the fracture suffered late in training camp, missing the team's first 12 games of the season as a result.

Rangers' Stepan Practices Fully Wednesday

News: Derek Stepan (leg) practiced fully Wednesday but is not expected to play later in the evening against the Red Wings, Andrew Gross of the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Derek Stepan has been on the ice with the Rangers for each of the last three days, but because he's working his way back from a long-term injury, he'll still need a little more time to prepare for a return to game action. With the top-line center seemingly enduring no setbacks while practicing thus far, he could be in line to make his season debut either game of the Rangers' weekend back-to-back set.

Rangers' Stepan Unlikely To Return Wednesday

News: According to head coach Alain Vigneault, the chances of Derek Stepan (leg) playing Wednesday are "very, very slim."
Analysis: Derek Stepan has been cleared for contact, but Vigneault wants him to get in a full practice session before returning, so it's almost certain he will not be activated from injured reserve Wednesday. The Rangers have a full practice scheduled for Friday, so Stepan could return the following day against the Maple Leafs if he is able to avoid a setback.

Rangers' Stepan Won't Play Monday

News: Derek Stepan (leg) will not play Monday against the Blues, Steve Zipay of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Derek Stepan has been officially cleared for contact, so his return to the lineup should be coming soon, but it won't be Monday night. Wednesday's game against the Red Wings seems like a good bet for when Stepan will suit up for the first time this season.

Rangers' Stepan Takes Part In Morning Skate

News: Derek Stepan (leg) was a full participant in Monday's morning skate, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
Analysis: Head coach Alain Vigneault said last week that Derek Stepan could return to action Monday against the Blues, so it looks like there's a good chance he'll be in the lineup. The center racked up 17 goals and 40 assists in 82 games last season, but hasn't played yet this year after breaking his leg in the preseason.

Rangers' Stepan Could Return As Soon As Monday

News: Coach Alain Vigneault suggested that Derek Stepan (leg) could return to the lineup as soon as Monday's game against the Blues, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
Analysis: Given that Derek Stepan was limited to non-contact work at Friday's practice and isn't expected to engage in full duty for at least a few more days, it seems highly unlikely that he'll return Monday when eligible to come off long-term injured reserve. More realistically, Stepan will probably need most of the upcoming week to get back up to full speed and to the point that he's comfortable taking contact, making the Rangers' Nov. 8 game against the Maple Leafs a likelier target for his return.

Rangers' Stepan To Practice With Team In 4-7 Days

News: Coach Alain Vigneault said Derek Stepan is expected to begin practicing with the team in four-to-seven days.
Analysis: Derek Stepan hasn't played in a regular season game this season after fracturing his fibula in the preseason. His return will add some extra offensive firepower to the Rangers. He's coming off a 57-point season (17 goals and 40 assists) in 2013-14, and could have another big year in an injury-shortened 2014-15 season.

Rangers' Stepan Skating

News: Derek Stepan (leg) has begun skating on his own, Andrew Gross of the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: It's a great sign that Derek Stepan has returned to the ice, but he's still expected to be sidelined for at least another week while his leg fully recovers. The center racked up 17 goals and 40 assists while playing all 82 games for the Rangers last season and should be a huge part of the team's game plan upon his return.

Rangers' Stepan Still Not Skating

News: Derek Stepan (leg) has yet to resume skating, and it remains to be seen when he will be able to do so, Andrew Gross of The Record reports.
Analysis: Derek Stepan is making good progress in his recovery from a broken leg, but he still has a few steps to go in the process, and will likely be sidelined at least a couple more weeks.

Rangers' Stepan On Track With Recovery

News: Derek Stepan (fractured fibula) appears to be progressing as expected with his recovery, Steve Zipay of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Derek Stepan has started swimming in an attempt to rehab the leg, but it'll still likely be at least another week before he steps back onto the ice to skate. He's not eligible to return to the game action until at least Nov. 3.

Rangers Place Stepan On LTIR

News: The Rangers placed Derek Stepan (leg) on LTIR on Monday, Andrew Gross of the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: The move will put Derek Stepan out for at least the first ten games, and will free up cap room for the team in his absence. He'll reclaim his spot as the top center on the team when he returns.

Rangers May Put Stepan (Leg) On LTIR

News: Coach Alain Vigneault said Saturday that the Rangers are leaning toward place Derek Stepan (leg) on long-term injured reserve, the Rangers' official site reports. He will announce his decision on Monday.
Analysis: Derek Stepan's non-displaced fractured fibula was initially expected to keep him out until late October, but placing him on LTIR would force him to miss at least 10 games, meaning the earliest he could return would be Nov. 3 against the Blues. Also factoring into the decision is that the move would allow the Rangers to keep 14 forwards to start the season, which Vigneault would prefer.

Rangers' Officially Rule Out Stepan 4-6 Weeks

News: Rangers GM Glen Sather announced Wednesday that Derek Stepan suffered a non-displaced fractured fibula and will be out for four-to-six weeks.
Analysis: Once Derek Stepan recovers from the injury, he'll still have to get his body back into hockey shape, so it might be wise to add an additional week to either end of that timetable before approximating his return to game action. Regardless, the loss of Stepan is crushing for the both the Rangers and fantasy owners, the latter of whom likely drafted the center in large part because of his pristine health record. While Stepan is out, the Rangers figure to elevate Derick Brassard to the No. 1 center spot, with a number of players left over to compete for a second-line role. The candidates could include veteran options such as Matthew Lombardi and Dominic Moore, as well as promising youngsters like Oscar Lindberg, Kevin Hayes and J.T. Miller.
