Sharks' Irwin Gets Goal In Lineup Return

News: Matt Irwin netted a goal on one of his two shot attempts in Saturday's shootout win over the Flyers.
Analysis: After serving as a healthy scratch in the Sharks' previous game, Matt Irwin certainly made his presence felt in his return. In addition to the goal, he finished with 22:11 TOI -- about five and a half more minutes than he's been averaging for the season. With Mirco Mueller quite likely out for the remainder of the season with a left hand injury, Irwin should be able to enjoy a regular role on the Sharks' blue line.

Sharks' Irwin To Play Saturday

News: Matt Irwin (upper body) will rejoin the lineup Saturday against the Blackhawks, David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: The upper-body injury cost Matt Irwin the last three games, but since he had been playing well prior to hitting the press box, coach Todd McLellan will make lineup room for the blueliner right away now that he's healthy. Scott Hannan will be scratched in place of Irwin.

Sharks Rule Irwin Out For Thursday

News: Matt Irwin (upper body) has been ruled out for Thursday's game against the Predators, Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Matt Irwin appears to be progressing from the injury and is considered day-to-day, but he'll be forced to sit for a third straight game. His next chance to play will come Saturday against the Blackhawks.

Sharks' Irwin Still Day-To-Day

News: Matt Irwin (upper body) has reported improvement with his condition and logged a full practice Wednesday, but is still in the day-to-day phase of his recovery, Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Wednesday marked Matt Irwin's first full session with the team since sustaining the injury last Friday, so he may require another skate or two with the team before returning to action. The Sharks will see how Irwin feels Thursday morning before rendering a decision on his status for that night's game versus the Predators, but Saturday's tilt with the Blackhawks may represent a more viable return date for the defenseman.

Sharks's Irwin (Upper Body) Skates Monday

News: Matt Irwin (upper body) skated Monday and hopes to be ready later in the week, Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Matt Irwin has already been ruled out for Monday's game, but it appears he is still aiming for a return later in the week. The fact that he skated Monday is a good sign, so it's plausible he will return Thursday against the Predators.

Sharks' Irwin (Upper Body) Out Monday

News: Matt Irwin (upper body) will not play in Monday's game against the Penguins, Curtis Pashelka of the Bay Area News Group reports.
Analysis: Matt Irwin will skate at practice but won't play in the game, and he's still considered day-to-day. His next shot to play will come Thursday against the Predators.

Sharks' Irwin Doubtful For Monday

News: Matt Irwin (upper body) is doubtful for Monday's game against the Penguins, Kevin Kurz of CSNBayArea.com reports.
Analysis: On the plus side, the report notes that Matt Irwin will try to skate Monday, so it doesn't appear at this point as though he is dealing with a long-term injury.

Sharks' Irwin Ruled Out For Saturday

News: Matt Irwin (upper body) will not play Saturday against the Canucks, David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Coach Todd McLellan said that while he is "hoping" that Matt Irwin is day-to-day after the injury forced him out of Friday's practice, the Sharks might not have a clearer picture of the defenseman's injury for another few days. Scott Hannan is expected to assume Irwin's spot in the lineup Saturday, while Taylor Fedun was recalled from AHL Worcester to add further depth to the blue line.

Sharks' Irwin Suffers Upper-Body Injury

News: Matt Irwin left Friday's practice due to an upper-body injury, CSN Bay Area's Kevin Kurz reports.
Analysis: The injury leaves Matt Irwin uncertain for Saturday's game against the Canucks. The blueliner has been surprisingly productive of late, with a point in each of his last four games, after managing just 11 points through the first 36 games of the season.

Sharks' Irwin On Three-Game Point Streak

News: Matt Irwin extended his current point streak with a goal, a plus-1 rating, and four shots in Monday's win over the Canadiens.
Analysis: That gives Matt Irwin, who is not typically a big scorer, points in three straight games. It also puts Irwin at seven goals on the season, which is a career-high for the young defender. He's not going to put a ton of points on board, but if you've got him in your lineup, you can't argue with his recent performances.

Sharks' Irwin Gets Assist In Loss

News: Matt Irwin assisted on one of two Sharks goals in Saturday's loss to the Senators.
Analysis: After often serving as a healthy scratch in the first three months of the season, Matt Irwin seems to have solidified a regular spot in the Sharks' lineup since the calendar flipped to 2015. He's chipped in four goals and three assists since the All-Star break to warrant some intrigue in deeper leagues, but his value is unlikely to extend beyond that.

Irwin Scores In Sharks' Win

News: Matt Irwin scored the game-winner in Thursday's game against Anaheim.
Analysis: That's Matt Irwin's third goal of the season and second point in as many games. He's only put in 24 games this season, but he's scoring points at a similar rate to last season, when he put up two goals and 17 assists through 62 games. If he can get in the lineup a little more regularly, he has some value in deep leagues.

Sharks' Irwin Grabs Assist Wednesday

News: Matt Irwin notched an assist Wednesday against the Kings.
Analysis: Matt Irwin has been in and out of the San Jose lineup all season, appearing in only 23 games this season. The assist gave Irwin his first point since Dec. 4, but he should have the opportunity to claim a more regular role with the team after the break. Justin Braun (upper body) was placed on injured reserve prior to Wednesday's game and is expected to miss multiple weeks, creating a lineup opening that could go to Irwin on most occasions.

Sharks' Irwin Picks Up Two Helpers In Win

News: Matt Irwin collected two assists in Thursday's victory over the Bruins.
Analysis: Both of Matt Irwin's assists came on shot attempts of his that were redirected into the goal, the first of which hit the crossbar. Irwin still has yet to find the net on his own since a two-goal performance in his season debut Oct. 14.

SJ's Irwin Will Be Scratched

News: Matt Irwin will be a healthy scratch on Thursday against Tampa Bay, according to the Mercury News' Curtis Pashelka.
Analysis: Matt Irwin stated the season great, getting two goals and an assist in his first two games. He's been quiet since then he's a minus-7 and has just seven shots over seven games.

Sharks' Irwin Blows Up In Season Debut

News: Matt Irwin celebrated joining the lineup for the first time this year by potting a pair of first-period goals -- one on the power play -- in Tuesday's shootout win over the Capitals.
Analysis: Well, that's a bit out of nowhere. Just 4:36 into the first period of his first game of the year, Matt Irwin equaled his shot total from 62 games last year. At 26 years old, this is something of a make-or-break season for Irwin, but he has decent offensive instincts and could develop some under-the-radar fantasy utility if he gets some run.

Sharks' Irwin To Make Season Debut

News: Matt Irwin will make his season debut Tuesday against the Capitals, Kevin Kurz of CSNBayArea.com reports.
Analysis: The emergence of Mirco Mueller resulted in Matt Irwin spending the first two games in the press box, but he'll spell the rookie Tuesday and make his season debut. Mueller has done little to jeopardize his standing with the Sharks thus far, which could make it difficult for Irwin to reclaim a regular role on defense. Irwin offered decent production in 62 games last season, scoring two goals and chipping in 17 assists and 35 penalty minutes.

Irwin's Goal Not Enough For Sharks

News: Matt Irwin scored the Sharks' lone goal in Wednesday's bitter Game 7 loss to the Kings.
Analysis: Game 7 looked to be off to an auspicious start for the Sharks when Matt Irwin scored in the opening minute of the second period, but the Kings would respond with five unanswered goals. Though Irwin only played in the final two games of the series, he proved to be one of the more active Sharks out there, accumulating four shots on goal, seven hits and five blocks.

Sharks' Irwin Will Start Monday

News: Matt Irwin will replace Marc-Edouard Vlasic (upper body) in the lineup for Monday's Game 6 against the Kings, CSN Bay Area's Brodie Brazil reports.
Analysis: Matt Irwin will try to fill in for one of the better defensive skaters in the NHL as the Sharks try to clinch the series Monday. Vlasic's status for a potential Game 7 is still in question, so it's possible that if the series goes that far, Irwin will see the ice in that game as well.

Sharks' Irwin Likely To Suit Up

News: Matt Irwin is likely to replace Marc-Edouard Vlasic (upper body) if he's unable to dress for Game 6 on Monday, according to CSN Bay Area.
Analysis: Vlasic didn't have a stall in the locker room and missed morning skate, so it appears likely that Matt Irwin will lace up for the first time this postseason.

SJ's Irwin Takes Misconduct In Chippy Game

News: Matt Irwin had an assist, a plus-2 rating, and ten penalty minutes from a misconduct in 4-0 blowout over Montreal on Saturday.
Analysis: Matt Irwin has played well lately, but you can't depend on him for big numbers in any category. With the ten penalty minutes from Saturday he has 33 on the season. He's not playing big minutes and not adding much offense. Shop around a bit before adding Irwin for the stretch run.

Irwin Adds Assist In Sharks' Blowout Win

News: Matt Irwin registered an assist and a shot during 17:30 of ice time in a blowout win over Philly on Thursday.
Analysis: Matt Irwin played strong, but so did nearly everyone on the Sharks on Thursday. He's been good in recent games, but his ceiling remains low.

Multi-Point Night For Sharks' Irwin

News: Matt Irwin finished Saturday's overtime win against the Wild with two assists, a plus-1 rating, two penalty minutes and a pair of shots in 21:39 of ice time.
Analysis: Matt Irwin produces in fits and starts, but he continues to show a lot of promise. He finished his rookie campaign last season with six goals and six assists in 38 games. Through 37 this season, he has two goals and 13 assists. His shots are up to 87 from 79 as well. He's showing improvement, even if it's in a small amount. The second half of the season will be the challenge, as this is Irwin's first full season in the NHL.

Sharks' Irwin Out Again Saturday

News: Matt Irwin (upper body) will not play Saturday vs. the Bruins, Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area reports.
Analysis: The Sharks remain mum on the extent of Matt Irwin's injury, but the defenseman will miss his second game in a row in any case. A move to injured reserve could be possible if Irwin's injury lingers into next week.

Irwin Out Thursday For Sharks

News: Matt Irwin will be out of the line up Thursday with an upper body injury, according to CSN Bay Area's Kevin Kurz.
Analysis: No official word on the severity of the injury. He should be considered day-to-day.
