Oilers' Talbot Expects Battle For Starting Job

News: Cam Talbot expects to battle for the starting job in training camp, according to the Edmonton Journal.
Analysis: One would think that Cam Talbot is just taking the high road here. Unless he performs miserably in camp he should be the starting goaltender once the season opens. He won't have anywhere near the defense playing in front of him that he had with the Rangers, so there will be off nights, but he's still better and offers much more upside than any other goaltender on the roster.

Oilers Trade For Talbot

News: Cam Talbot was acquired by the Oilers on Saturday from the Rangers in exchange for picks in the second, third, and seventh rounds. Along with Talbot, the Rangers shipped their seventh-round choice to Edmonton in the deal.
Analysis: Cam Talbot has quietly been one of the league's better backups in his two NHL seasons, compiling a 33-15-0 record, 2.00 GAA, and .931 save percentage across 57 games. As a result of those efforts, he'll earn his first crack at a No. 1 job with the Oilers in 2015-16, though the move from one of the league's better defensive units in New York to one of its worst in Edmonton will surely ding his overall numbers. Even with the Oilers adding a generational talent to their corps through the draft in top pick Connor McDavid, the defense remains a tremendous weakness, as has been the case for nearly a decade. Talbot should amount to an upgrade over Ben Scrivens in net, but he'll need the young blueliners Justin Schultz, Oscar Klefbom, and Griffin Reinhart to make major strides during the upcoming season in order to ascend to middle-tier status among fantasy goalies.

Talbot, Rangers Defeat Devils

News: Cam Talbot stopped 19 of 21 in Tuesday's 4-2 win over New Jersey.
Analysis: He didn't have to work hard in this one, but Cam Talbot did make several degree-of-difficulty stops to compensate for the Rangers' inability to build much of a lead against Cory Schneider. With the Rangers now having clinched the Presidents' Trophy, he could see another start before the regular season comes to an end.

Rangers' Talbot Gets Start Tuesday

News: Cam Talbot has been named the starter in net for Tuesday's game at New Jersey, The Record's Andrew Gross reports.
Analysis: He allowed four goals in his last start more than a week ago. With Henrik Lundqvist getting a rare night off, Cam Talbot can be considered in daily leagues Tuesday.

Rangers' Talbot Allows Four In Loss

News: Cam Talbot surrendered four goals on 30 shots in Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Capitals.
Analysis: Henrik Lundqvist made his return Saturday after nearly two months out with a neck injury, but Cam Talbot got the nod Sunday on the second game of a back-to-back set. It wasn't one of his better performances, but the 27-year-old remains a solid spot start option whenever he does spell King Henrik down the stretch.

Rangers' Talbot To Start Sunday

News: Cam Talbot will get the start Sunday against Washington, Andrew Gross of The Record reports.
Analysis: Henrik Lundqvist returned to the ice Saturday and allowed four goals on 30 shots. Cam Talbot will get the nod Sunday. In his last outing, Talbot allowed one goal on 24 shots as the Rangers defeated the Senators 5-1.

Talbot, Rangers Cool Down Ottawa

News: Cam Talbot stopped 23 of 24 shots Thursday in a 5-1 victory over the Senators.
Analysis: The Rangers dominated the vast majority of this contest, but Cam Talbot held strong and had to make quite a few quality saves. However, Henrik Lundqvist served as his backup Thursday and is ready to reclaim the role of No. 1 goaltender as soon as Saturday against Boston.

Rangers' Talbot Getting Start Thursday

News: Cam Talbot will be in the net for Thursday's game against the Senators, Andrew Gross of The Record reports.
Analysis: Cam Talbot has been a masterful replacement for Henrik Lundqvist (neck) over the last seven weeks, but his run as the team's primary starter seems to be nearing its end. With coach Alain Vigneault confirming that Lundqvist would serve as the backup goalie Thursday and likely return to the crease Saturday against the Bruins, Talbot's fantasy value stands to plummet as a byproduct. Coach Alain Vigneault reiterated Wednesday that Lundqvist is the Rangers' clear No. 1 goalie and would be used as such down the stretch, perhaps leaving Talbot will only two or three more starts through the remainder of the regular season. If nothing else, Talbot will at least make for an elite streaming option when he gets the nod, as his 19-8-4 record, 2.19 GAA, and .927 save percentage over 33 games perhaps make him the NHL's most overqualified backup goalie.

Talbot, Rangers Can't Hold Down Kings

News: Cam Talbot allowed four goals on 35 shots Tuesday in a 4-2 loss to the Kings.
Analysis: So ends Cam Talbot's hot streak, in which he allowed two or fewer goals in nine consecutive outings. He still made a lot of outstanding saves in this one, but the Kings came hard and simply seemed like they wanted it more. In truth, they did -- the Rangers are pretty secure in their spot atop the Metropolitan Division (and tied with Montreal for the top spot in the Eastern Conference), while Los Angeles is fighting just to make the playoffs. The worse news for Talbot owners is that Henrik Lundqvist (neck) is expected to return this week.

Rangers Stick With Talbot

News: Cam Talbot is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Kings, the Rangers' official site reports.
Analysis: Meanwhile, fellow goalie Henrik Lundqvist joined his teammates during Tuesday's morning skate, so it looks like Cam Talbot's run as the Rangers' top netminder could be winding down soon, though a firm timetable for Lundqvist's return to game action has yet to be established. In the 23 games since Lundqvist has been injured, Talbot -- who has won six of his last seven turns -- has started 21 games, recording a 15-3-3 record in that span, while bringing his GAA down to 2.13 in the process.

Talbot Leads Rangers In Rout Of Ducks

News: Cam Talbot stopped 36 of 38 shots faced in a 7-2 rout of Anaheim on Sunday.
Analysis: Perhaps rout is a subjective word considering Cam Talbot's prowess on the evening, yielding his only two goals to the team's sniper Corey Perry. With Henrik Lundqvist reportedly nearing a return, the 27-year-old Talbot heads into what could be his last week as the team's number goaltender having won six of his seven starts, including four wins on back-to-back nights. The previously undrafted free agent is now 19-7-4 with a .929 save-percentage and 2.14 GAA through 32 games played.

Rangers Continue To Roll With Talbot

News: Cam Talbot is slated to start Sunday's game against the Ducks, Steve Zipay of Newsday reports.
Analysis: The Rangers will stick with Cam Talbot -- who made 28 saves in a 3-2 shootout win over the Hurricanes on Saturday -- in this weekend's back-to-back situation, with the goalie having been sharp of late. Talbot has won five of his last six starts, allowing just six goals in that span.

Talbot Powers Rangers To Another Win

News: Cam Talbot made 28 saves to lift the Rangers to a 3-2 shootout win over the Hurricanes on Saturday night. It was the Rangers' NHL-best 23rd road victory this season.
Analysis: His record improved to 18-7-4 on the season with the win and 5-1 in his last six. In fact, he's only allowed six goals in those six games. King Henrik who?

Rangers' Talbot To Start Saturday

News: Cam Talbot will start Saturday's game in Carolina.
Analysis: No surprise here, as Henrik Lundqvist (neck) remains sidelined and is also attending to the birth of his child. Coach Alain Vigneault did not say whether Cam Talbot or Mackenzie Skapski will start the second game of the back-to-back Sunday against Anaheim.

Talbot Allows One In Loss

News: Cam Talbot stopped 30 of the 31 shots he faced in Wednesday's 1-0 loss to the Blackhawks.
Analysis: Cam Talbot was excellent once again in Henrik Lundqvist's (neck) absence, but didn't get any support from the Rangers' offense Wednesday. He's now fourth in the NHL with a .928 save percentage, and has allowed one or zero goals in each of his last five games.

Rangers Roll With Talbot

News: Cam Talbot is slated to start Wednesday's game against Chicago, Steve Zipay of Newsday reports.
Analysis: While fellow goalie Henrik Lundqvist is due back in about 10 days, for now, the Rangers will continue to roll with Cam Talbot. The 27-year-old has won four straight starts, while allowing just three goals in that span.

Talbot, Rangers Win Again

News: Cam Talbot turned aside 38 of 39 shots in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Panthers.
Analysis: Cam Talbot has been sensational amidst his current four game winning streak, allowing just three total goals in that span. He's also allowed two or fewer goals in six consecutive starts as he continues to fill in for the injured Henrik Lundqvist. Talbot should continued to be rolled whenever he's in net until King Henrik returns.

Rangers' Talbot To Make Start Sunday

News: Cam Talbot will be between the pipes Sunday against the Panthers, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
Analysis: With backup Mackenzie Skapski getting the easier matchup of the Rangers' back-to-back set Saturday in Buffalo, Cam Talbot will have to wait until Sunday to get back in the net. The rest should prove beneficial to Talbot, who has stood on his head over his five starts in March, going 4-0-1 with a 0.99 GAA and .966 save percentage. That kind of production should make it worthwhile to keep him active against any opponent.

Talbot, Rangers Win On Back-To-Back Nights

News: Cam Talbot stopped 28 of 29 shots en route to a 3-1 win over the Capitals on Wednesday.
Analysis: Winning his second game in as many nights, Cam Talbot (11-1-2 in his last 14 starts) is really making it easy on the organization to ease back number one Henrik Lundqvist from his upper-body injury. Believe it or not, it's the second time the sophomore goaltender has won on back-to-back nights, repeating the feat he accomplished in late December of the 2013-14 campaign. The 27-year-old improves to 16-6-4 with a 2.23 GAA and a .923 save-percentage through 28 games.

Rangers' Talbot To Start On Second Night In A Row

News: Cam Talbot will be in the crease for Wednesday's game against the Capitals, Andrew Gross of The Record reports.
Analysis: After guiding the Rangers to a 2-1 victory Tuesday over their fellow rivals in the Big Apple, Cam Talbot will be called upon to start in his second game in as many days. The Capitals have been one of the league's more productive offenses this season, but with the health of some of their major contributors (forward Nicklas Backstrom, defensemen Brooks Orpik and Mike Green) in question for Wednesday's game, Talbot may be catching the team at a vulnerable time. He's faced the Capitals just once in his NHL career, stopping 31 of 34 shots in a loss on Dec. 27, 2013.

Rangers' Talbot Saves 29, Wins Final NY-NY Battle

News: Cam Talbot stopped 29 of 30 shots Tuesday in a 2-1 win over the Islanders.
Analysis: Cam Talbot has found his confidence in net lately, looking calm and collected between the pipes, and he was dominant again in the final regular-season meeting between the two New York teams. He's given up just four goals -- total -- in his last four starts, with a 3-0-1 record in that span. Unfortunately, he's getting hot at the wrong time, as Henrik Lundqvist (neck) is starting to close in on a return.

Rangers' Talbot To Start Tuesday

News: Cam Talbot will start in net Tuesday against the Islanders, Steve Zipay of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Cam Talbot will once again sit between pipes Tuesday coming off a shutout against the Blackhawks and three straight contests allowing two or less goals. He will look to make that four, but will face a tough matchup against the high-powered Islanders.

Rangers' Talbot Blanks Blackhawks

News: Cam Talbot stopped all 29 shots he faced in Sunday's win over Chicago.
Analysis: Another great effort for Cam Talbot, who has won two of his last three games, allowing just three goals in that span. The 27-year-old is now 14-6-4 on the season with a .921 save percentage, 2.33 GAA and five shutouts. He remains a great fantasy option while starter Henrik Lundqvist (throat) is sidelined.

Rangers' Talbot Will Start Sunday

News: Cam Talbot will start between the pipes Sunday against the Blackhawks, Steve Zipay of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Cam Talbot's presence in net shouldn't come as a surprise at this point, and backup Mackenzie Skapski isn't expected to see a start until one of the back-to-back sets later in the month. He has cooled down a bit after going on a hot streak, but still remains a solid replacement in net while Henrik Lundqvist is on the shelf.

Rangers' Talbot Stops 29 In Loss

News: Cam Talbot allowed two goals on 31 shots in Wednesday's 2-1 overtime loss to the Red Wings.
Analysis: Cam Talbot played well all night, and probably deserved to pick up a win, but his teammates had trouble solving Jimmy Howard at the other end of the ice. Talbot is now 13-6-4 on the year, and will continue to fill in for Henrik Lundqvist while he's out with an injury.
